COMMUNITY NEWSClimate EmergencyUK reveal how they willscore UK councils ontheir climate actionClimate Emergency UK have publishedtheir methodology for scoring all UK councilson the action they are taking to reducegreenhouse gas emissions. The CouncilClimate Action Scorecards will be the firstcomprehensive measurement of councils’climate action.The methodology sets out the process ClimateEmergency UK will use to score each council in2023, based on publicly available informationfrom councils and national data sets. There will bea three stage marking process, including a Rightof Reply for all councils.These Scorecards are a useful tool for campaignersand councils alike to better understand whatclimate action is possible from UK local authorities,and hold councils to account on their progress.Climate Emergency UK is revealing the criteriaon which councils will be scored. These criteriahave been created through 9 months of researchand consultation with over 80 organisations andindividuals within the sector. They focus on theactions that councils have control or influenceover, which have the biggest impact on carbonemissions and biodiversity loss. The 7 sectionsthat the Scorecards cover are: Buildings &Heating, Transport, Governance & Finance,Planning, Biodiversity, Collaboration &Engagement and Waste Reduction & Food,covering a total of 90 questions.Those consulted includecouncillors, councilofficers, The Campaignto Protect Rural England,Anthesis, Campaign forBetter Transport, Possible,Keep Britain Tidyand many more. AnAdvisory Group, withrepresentatives from thesector including councillors, council officers,Ashden, mySociety and climate campaign groupsmet monthly to provide more in-depth commentson developing the Scorecards.Hannah Jewell, Campaigns and Policy Officer atClimate Emergency UK said “Earlier this year wepublished our Climate Action Plan Scorecards,evaluating every councils; plan for taking climateaction. It is much more of a challenge to scorewhat council are actually doing, which is whywe have put so much effort into developing thismethodology and we’re excited to share it today.”“We hope that publishing the methodologybefore we start marking will help to ensure that wescore councils as accurately as possible. This givescouncils some time to prepare, and make sure allthose important documents and evidence of theirclimate action is publicly available for us to find”.One of the members of the Advisory Board, CllrDonna Stimson (Conservative), Climate Leadat Royal Borough of Windsor and MaidenheadCouncil, said “It’s been a real pleasure workingwith Climate Emergency UK on creating theScorecards methodology. They have dived deepinto the complexities of local government andthe differences across the UK. This methodologyis a really useful barometer of what climate actioncouncils could be doing and this methodologywill be a useful tool for climate action officers allaround the country, even before the Scorecardresults come out next year”.Hannah Jewell added “As the internationalclimate change conference, COP27 ended a fewweeks back, it is clearer than ever that urgentclimate action at all levels is needed.
