Sotheby’s sales reached $8 billion 

by the end of 2022 

Sotheby’s announced that it had 

good results in 2022, thanks 

to continued innovation and 

successful auctions in both Fine Art 

and Luxury. Three single-owner collections 

totaling over $100 million were sold, and 

the company plans to expand its global 

audience even further. 

Asia’s market leader, Sotheby’s, is 

opening a new location in Hong Kong in 

2024. The new building will have a big 

exhibition space and will be a showcase for 

all of Sotheby’s services – from auctions to 

private sales to exhibitions of art and luxury 

collectibles. The new location will also have 

a sale calendar spread across the year, 

with live auctions hosted within the same 

compound. 

Sotheby’s is announcing that it will be 

moving to new premises in Shanghai in 

2023. This follows a strong year for the 

company, with auction sales of $1.1 billion. 

In 2022, Sotheby’s also opened a new 

office in Tokyo, staged its first auction in 

Singapore for 15 years, and held the first 

major international exhibition in Vietnam. 

The year also welcomed new appointments 

in Mainland China, South Korea, and 

Thailand, as well as the recent expansion 

of Sotheby’s Buy Now in Hong Kong to 

enable collectors to acquire art and luxury 

collectibles via an intuitive digital platform 

all-year round. 

The client base in Asia is expanding 

rapidly, with record numbers of bidders 

bidding at Sotheby’s auctions. This year, the 

number of under-40s bidding has tripled. 

Asian collectors are spending a lot more 

on average than collectors from other parts 

of the world. They’re also bidding more than 

people from other parts of the world. 

When Sotheby’s sold art in Asia, about 

one in three bidders was new to the 

company. And, in Sotheby’s global sales, 

68% of new bidders were from countries in 

Asia. 

This year, eight out of ten items sold at 

auction in Asia were bought by Sotheby’s. 

Next year, Sotheby’s will have a special 

celebration to mark its 50th anniversary in 

Asia. They’ll hold a series of events and 

auctions across the region to make sure 

everyone can celebrate. 

In celebration of its 5th anniversary, 

Sotheby’s Dubai gallery has been hosting 

more exhibitions than ever before. This 

expansion is especially evident by the 

number of buyers and bidders from the 

Middle East who have made their first 

purchase at a Sotheby’s auction.

Mixing imagination 

with reality through 

digital art 

“In my art, I blur the lines between imagination 

and reality while exploring womanhood in many 

different ways. I like to give my images a vintage, 

ethereal feel,” says Catrin Welz-Stein. 

- Exclusive to Magzoid 

Catrin was born in Weinheim, 

Germany. She worked for different 

advertising firms in Germany 

and the US after completing 

her graphic design studies at Darmstadt. 

Her trademark is her bizarre and sensual 

images that are both familiar and alien at 

the same time. 

Catrin started making digital art in 2009. 

She does this by fusing historical paintings, 

oddities, and illustrations from fairytales. 

Catrin’s artwork is offered for sale globally 

and has been shown in Asia and Europe. 

“In my art, I blur the lines between 

imagination and reality while exploring 

womanhood in many different ways. I like 

to give my images a vintage, ethereal feel. 

During the creative process, I scan old 

paintings, photographs, and illustrations, 

making sure they are in the public domain. 

I work digitally and transform the scans by 

first tearing them apart. They are like puzzle 

pieces that I work together until they reveal 

a whole new meaning and tell an unknown 

story,” says Catrin. 

Catrin Welz-Stein’s imaginative airy 

artwork offers the conventional portrait a 

new dimension. The artist incorporates 

vintage-inspired components into all of 

her works while also adding her unique 

combination of the bizarre and surreal. This 

gives her collection a vintage aesthetic. 

The art initially resembles an oil painting 

that has been created gradually, layer 

by layer. Catrin does meticulously layer 

each component in her art, but she does 

so in a very contemporary manner. She 

methodically manipulates pieces of vintage 

photographs, artwork, and illustrations in 

Photoshop to produce her distinctive image. 

Looking at it, one is hard-pressed to 

consider it a collage, but instead of looking 

like a mash-up of favourite pictures, her

Her ethereal, fairytale-like artwork allures 

and intrigues with startling naivety and 

femininity. 

Catrin said in an interview that “her art 

world” is “Otto Dix, Frida Kahlo, Picasso, 

Gustav Klimt, Magritte, and Boticelli.” It is 

easy to see those influences in her works.

The International Day of 

Women in Multilateralism 

The General Conference of 

UNESCO adopted Resolution 

41 C/57 on November 23, 

2021, designating January 

25 as the International Day of Women 

in Multilateralism. UNESCO launched 

the International Day of Women in 

Multilateralism on January 25, 2022. This 

International Day was established by the 

Gabonese Ambassador, HE Ms Rachel 

Annick Ogoula Akiko, and approved by the 

UNESCO General Conference at its 41st 

session in November 2021. 

The goal of this day is to acknowledge 

the crucial part that women play in the 

multilateral system’s efforts to advance 

human rights, world peace, and sustainable 

development. 

The International Day of Women in 

Multilateralism advocates for agreements 

and policies that are more genderresponsive 

that will benefit women and 

girls. It also advocates for more women to 

hold senior positions of decision-making 

that create and implement global agendas. 

Furthermore, it provides a global 

forum for dialogue between the current 

multilateral women leaders and the 

upcoming generation of women who will 

hold positions of leadership in global 

governance. Since the creation and 

adoption of the United Nations Charter in 

1945, women have played a significant role 

in world governance. Without a number of 

outstanding women, this ground-breaking 

Charter would not have been as inclusive 

as it is today, historians remind us. 

Today, more and more women 

have assumed senior positions in UN 

organisations, in the diplomatic missions 

of their countries, and in a number of 

global institutions. In addition, they have 

promoted human rights, peace, and gender 

equality by promoting access to healthcare, 

education, and voting rights, among other 

things. 

The elimination of violence, harassment, 

and discrimination against women and 

girls remains a top priority for the United 

Nations, especially in light of the rise in 

these incidents that took place in COVID-19 

detention facilities around the world. 

An International Day of Women in 

Multilateralism is essential to both 

highlighting the crucial contributions 

made by female leaders during the 

United Nations’ foundation and serving 

as inspiration for the next wave of female 

leaders. In the areas of international politics, 

economics, and human rights, women are 

gaining power. 

But in many other areas of authority 

and decision-making, women are still 

disproportionately underrepresented. In 

UN-led or co-led peacekeeping processes, 

women make up only 23% of delegates. 

Gender-related elements were only 

included in 28.6% of peace accords in 

2020 (down from 37.1% in 2015). 

Such evidence is startling, especially 

since it has been shown that peace 

agreements are more successful and more 

long-lasting when women participate in the 

negotiations and when they are gendersensitive 

from the start. 

Director General of UNESCO Audrey 

Azoulay places a high premium on 

women’s leadership in multilateralism. She 

challenged the world community to create 

a new style of multilateral leadership to 

achieve gender equality alongside Iceland’s 

Prime Minister, Katrin Jakobsdóttir. They 

stated that feminist leaders not only play a 

key role in achieving gender equality but 

also plan and create systemic change. They 

take the risk to invent, teach, and create. 

Leaders in the feminist movement expose 

injustices and unfair opportunities. They are 

aware that discrimination and exclusion are 

the root causes of gender inequality and 

that only by removing these obstacles will 

significantly change be possible. 

The Director-General of UNESCO 

is reissuing this call for a “collective 

reflection to address the specific 

challenges of women to guarantee them 

a fair representation at all levels” in her 

message for International Day of Women 

in Multilateralism 2022. This calls for taking 

multilaterally agreed measures and tackling 

the underlying causes of inequality. 

UNESCO is dedicated to offering a global 

forum that will broaden the perspectives of 

future generations of women and give them 

the opportunity to co-shape multilateral 

decisions that will affect gender equality 

in the fields of education, science, culture, 

communication, and information. 

At the end of the day, UNESCO stands 

together with its international partners to 

work towards the Sustainable Development 

Goals for gender equality and embodies 

this belief through the UN Secretary- 

General Antonio Guterres. 

“Today, women’s 

leadership is a 

cause. Tomorrow 

it must be a norm. 

This is how we 

will transform 

international peace 

and security,” says 

Antonio Guterres.

Bernard Arnault surpasses Elon Musk 

to become richest person in the world 

Elon Musk has been demoted to 

second place on Bloomberg’s 

list of the world’s richest people 

by Bernard Arnault, chairman of 

French luxury goods giant LVMH. Arnault is 

the first European to top the list. According 

to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, 

Arnault’s wealth has increased to $171 

billion from the Tesla CEO’s $164 billion 

fortune. Arnault had already displaced 

Musk as the top “Real Time Billionaire” on 

Forbes’ list. Musk’s net worth has tumbled 

by $107 billion this year, according to the 

Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Arnault’s 

wealth, which stems from his controlling 

stake in LVMH, has suffered a more modest 

$7 billion decline. 

The divergence is partly down to the 

stock performance of the companies in 

which the pair own shares. Musk’s purchase 

of Twitter hasn’t helped either. Still, he is in 

no imminent danger of falling further down 

the list: His fortune remains comfortably 

bigger than that of Indian industrialist 

Gautam Adani ($125 billion) and Amazon 

founder Jeff Bezos ($116 billion), who rank 

third and fourth on Bloomberg’s list. 

While Tesla’s share price has plummeted 

54% this year, LVMH stock has held steady, 

supported by robust sales in the United 

States and Europe. The luxury market has 

remained relatively steady, even as surging 

inflation has led less-affluent shoppers to 

change their spending habits. LVMH has a 

market value of $386 billion. 

Born in Roubaix in the north of France 

in 1949, Arnault graduated from the 

prestigious École Polytechnique, an 

engineering school in Paris. He began his 

career in the family-owned construction 

company, Ferret-Savinel, becoming 

chairman in 1978 after successive 

promotions. 

Six years later, he got wind that the 

French government was looking for a new 

investor to take over Boussac Saint-Freres. 

The bankrupt textile group owned a key 

asset: Christian Dior, a celebrated French 

fashion house. 

Arnault bought control of the group, 

returning it to profitability and embarking on 

a strategy to develop the world’s leading 

luxury goods company. “In the process, 

he reinvigorated Christian Dior as the 

cornerstone of the new organization,” 

according to a biography on the LVMH 

website. Arnault bought a controlling stake 

in LVMH in 1989, two years after the group 

was formed by the merger of Louis Vuitton 

and Moët Hennessy. He has been chairman 

and CEO of the company ever since. 

Although his own name may not be 

immediately recognizable to many, the 

brands that Arnault has been instrumental 

in growing — from Christian Dior to Dom 

Pérignon — have become household 

names. 

Over the past three decades, Arnault 

has turned LVMH into a luxury goods 

powerhouse with 75 labels selling wine, 

spirits, fashion, leather goods, perfumes, 

cosmetics, watches, jewelery, luxury travel 

and hotel stays. He opened China’s first 

Louis Vuitton store in Beijing in 1992. 

In January 2021, the group completed its 

$15.8 billion takeover of iconic US jeweler 

Tiffany & Co, the luxury industry’s biggest 

ever acquisition.

The artist who brings 

life to portraits 

“Through my creative self-expression, I aim to 

convey a story. Every portrait is unique and tells 

that story,” says Leanne. 


During the pandemic, Leanne 

Bishop’s talent for drawing was 

discovered in 2020, thanks to 

her innate talent for all things 

creative. Her unwavering resolve to 

produce images that capture an emotion 

or an event as genuine as the memory or 

snapshot they reflect was strengthened 

by each new obstacle. Graphite pencils 

were Leanne’s first choice of medium, and 

she later switched to mostly charcoal on 

paper. Leanne creates works of unmatched 

depth and mystery, from quick drawings 

to elaborate projects for clients. She 

believes in promoting fun, soulful, and 

healing art. Her social media expertise 

forges connections with her followers with 

each pencil stroke or personalized video 

fade-in to encourage joyful, spiritual, and 

therapeutic work. 

She has always cherished artistic 

expression. Leanne obtained a Bachelor of 

Science in Nursing from Thompson Rivers 

University after growing up in Kamloops, 

British Columbia. Later, she relocated to the 

Fraser Valley to have a family and continue 

her nursing work. A delightful family 

painting session at our kitchen table in April 

2020 sparked her love of drawing. “My 

affinity for creating hyper-realistic artwork 

grew from being inspired by my kids. Every 

time a project was revealed, their faces lit 

up, and their voices rose in excitement,” 

says Leanne. She was inspired to keep 

exercising her new skill by her sense 

of accomplishment after finishing each 

drawing. She aspires to give each portrait 

life and produce accurate, meticulous 

work that provides the viewer with a better 

understanding of reality. 

Leanne’s illustrations add delicate layers 

of visual narrative to the reference image 

rather than being perfect replicas. Although 

dynamic, the process is organic. Her 

preferred medium evolved from graphite 

pencils to compressed charcoal, with the 

odd graphite and coloured pencil for finer 

detailing. She learned through trial and error 

that various tools, including paintbrushes, 

sponges, and cotton swabs, can create 

multiple textures. 

Her journey in arts has paralleled every 

other element of her life; thus, she naturally 

sets objectives to increase her knowledge 

and abilities. She has discovered that 

creating hyper-realistic portraits is the 

most challenging but satisfying artistic 

achievement. 

“Through my creative self-expression, 

I aim to convey a story. Every portrait is 

unique and tells that story,” says Leanne. 

She describes herself as an artist, still 

growing her wings before she begins to 

fly. Regardless, in December 2021, she 

finished her first commission portrait. The 

‘Community Art Show Exhibition’ at her local 

museum featured her artwork from 2020 to 

2022.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan leaves 

the crowd in awe! 

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan took the 

fans on a rollercoaster with his 

astonishing vocals during his 

concert at Coca-Cola Arena, 

Dubai, on 29th December 2022. Rahat 

Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani Singer. 

He is the nephew of Nusrat Fateh Ali 

Khan. Rahat performs pop, Qawwali and 

ghazals alongside other genres. He has 

an excellent reputation as a live performer, 

and his concerts are known for their high 

energy and passion. He is also popular 

as a playback singer in Hindi cinema and 

the Pakistan film industry. The lyrics of his 

songs are often devotional and spiritual in 

nature, and the music is designed to evoke 

a sense of transcendence in the listeners. 

At the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan concert, 

the stage was occupied with a full band 

backing up the singer. The band included 

instruments such as harmonium, tabla, 

dholak, and various percussion instruments. 

The performance was backed up by 

singers and dancers and was a feast for 

the senses. With the powerful vocals of 

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and the energetic 

instrumentation of the band, the Coca-Cola 

Arena was rocked. Overall, the concert 

was a truly unforgettable and uplifting 

experience, filled with powerful music, 

emotion, and spirituality.

Advay Sureka, eight 

years old, studying in year 

4 at Emirates International 

Jumeirah, says 

that he is extremely 

happy to get the 

black belt. He

instructors, his parents

& Manoj Sureka) and his school 

teacher Rachel Collins, for their support 

and motivation. He enjoys taekwondo 

because it gives him physical and mental 

strength and fitness. 

Alisha Fatima Memon, eight years old, 

studying in year 4 at Jumeirah English 

Speaking School (JESS), 

daughter of Arsalan Memon 

& Murk Memon, says that 

taekwondo has taught her 

a lot of things in her life. 

“I have learned to be 

strong and resilient in 

my black belt journey,” 

mentions Alisha. 

“Congratulations to 

all the kids. Achieving 

this level of mastery in any 

martial art is a significant 

accomplishment and 

requires a great deal of dedication, hard 

work, and discipline,” says one of the parents 

– Varsha Sureka. 

Taekwondo is a martial art that originated 

in Korea. The modern form of 

taekwondo began to take shape 

in the 1940s and 1950s. Today, 

taekwondo is practised by 

millions of people worldwide 

and is recognized 

as one of the most 

popular martial arts in 

the world. It is known 

for its fast and powerful 

techniques, which utilize kicks and punches 

delivered with precision and speed. In 

addition to its physical benefits, taekwondo 

also emphasizes mental and spiritual 

development, and practitioners often strive

the Emirate’s art, culture and heritage 

RAKFAF is back again with yet 

another enriching, immersive 

cultural heritage and art festival 

for local and international visitors 

alike. Held annually under the patronage 

of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al 

Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and the 

UAE Supreme Council Member, this fusion 

of ancient and modern art festival is one 

of the largest outdoor exhibitions in the 

Emirates not to be missed! 

Hosted at the Al Jazeera Al Hamra 

Heritage Village, the exciting 11th edition of 

RAKFAF will commence from February 3rd 

until February 28th, 2023. RAKFAF is a 

community festival designed to display 

the talent of local and emerging artists, 

photographers, and filmmakers, as artists 

around the world join hands to celebrate 

art, create opportunities for cultural 

exchange, and support the creative and 

artistic sectors of the emirate. 

For this year, the Festival has its theme 

inspired by the Arabian Almond, which has 

its white-pink bloom dominating the peak of 

Jebel Jais from January to April. Native to 

Turkey, Iran, and the Arabian Peninsula, the 

wood of the shrub was traditionally used to 

make small tribal axes and its small bitter 

almond edible once cooked. The Arabian 

Almond reflects both the heritage of Ras Al 

Khaimah and the region’s interaction and 

dependence on the natural environment, 

two of the many sub-themes explored in 

this year’s art submissions. In collaboration 

with the Festival’s valued cultural partners, 

it will feature six special exhibitions that will 

identify and understand ‘nature’ at its core.

PANTONE’S COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2023 

Viva Magenta 

“An unconventional shade for an unconventional time.” 

Introducing Pantone’s Colour for 2023, 

Viva Magenta, or Pantone 18-1750. Viva 

Magenta is “a shade rooted in nature, 

descending from the red family, and 

expressive of a new signal of strength.” 

Pantone, the colour and design company, 

has selected the colour of the year every 

year since 2000. In order to determine its 

decision, Pantone researches current trends 

in fashion, home design, film, technology, 

and other areas. It is also meant to reflect 

the culture and portray its mood. 

According to Pantone, Viva Magenta 

is a pulsating colour whose vibrancy 

encourages a joyful and optimistic 

celebration while creating a fresh story. 

In the company’s statement, words like 

“brave,” “fearless,” and “empowering” recur 

often. 

“In this age of technology, we look to 

draw inspiration from nature and what is 

real,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive 

director of the Pantone Color Institute. 

Though the brilliant colour represents 

technological progress, Pantone says 

its pick was inspired by nature. The hue 

resembles cochineal, a natural red dye 

derived from a tiny insect. 

In her description of the colour’s name, 

Leatrice says it is a happy, brilliant shade 

that inspires hope. She asserts that if you’re 

wearing this hue, there is no way you can 

enter a room without drawing attention 

to yourself. It’s a bold move. It embraces 

everyone with the same rebellious attitude 

and is funny and inclusive. 

The “Magentaverse” appears to 

have arrived already. With the help of 

partnerships with businesses like Motorola, 

Spoonflower, and Cariuma, Pantone has 

made various products in the chosen 

colour, including skate shoes, wallpaper, 

and telephones. In addition, the art gallery 

ARTECHOUSE offers a whole magenta 

experience beginning at Miami’s Art Basel 

and extending to the general public.

“Truly this is the start of a century of symbiosis between man 

and machine. It’s only the beginning. I’m excited to see where 

it all goes in my lifetime,” says Fillip. 


Fillip Isgro’s preferred art medium 

utilizes machine learning and 

finely tuned artificial intelligence 

models to create awe-inspiring 

artworks. Coupled with traditional digital 

art techniques, his instruments and 

conventional digital art methods enable him 

to influence and be influenced by his work. 

“It’s a fine dance between me and the 

machine. Constantly pushing and being 

pushed by what happens,” he says. “It’s 

exciting when I set the stage for magic to 

happen, and something different happens 

altogether. It makes my inner wonder run 

wild with ideas. I’m not really sure what I’m 

going to get, and I think that’s exactly why 

my process is what it is.” 

Fillip’s artistic philosophy is based on 

the idea that one must master the single 

constant in the cosmos, chaos, to properly 

produce engaging and thought-provoking 

art. 

Chaos is unavoidable, he expresses, 

yet allowing ideas and abstract thoughts 

to flow can produce unexpected gems that 

both the author and the observer will find 

enjoyable. Machine Delusions concentrates 

on these ideas when composing pieces.

ease with technology, we as onlookers must 

realize that, in the end, all that prevails is 

the artistic eye of human influence and the

Chinese New Year 

Chinese New Year commences on 

the new moon that rises between 

January 21 and February 20. 

Also known as the “Lunar New 

Year,” it is a yearly 15-day celebration 

in China and by the Chinese population 

worldwide. The colorful festivities continue 

until the next full moon. Also referred to as 

the “Spring Festival,” each new year has 

an animal to which it will be affiliated, which 

repeats every 12 years. 

In earlier days, gods and ancestors 

were historically honored on this occasion. 

Regional practices and traditions for 

welcoming the New Year differ significantly 

across China. The evening before Chinese 

New Year’s Day is generally seen as a 

chance for Chinese families to gather for 

the traditional reunion supper. Every family 

is also expected to perform a thorough 

cleaning in order to remove any bad luck 

and make room for new good luck. 

The year 2023 observes the Year 

of the Water Rabbit. The rabbit, in 

Chinese mythology, represents luck 

and perseverance. Hence, everyone is 

predicted to have a wonderful time in the 

Year of the Rabbit, and most are expected

Orlando Museum of Art celebrates“Don’t Ask Me 

Where I’m From” exhibition opening 

The Orlando Museum of Art hosted 

a reception to mark the debut of 

an exhibition featuring secondgeneration 

immigrant artists. The 

celebration was attended by more than 400 

guests, many of whom were international. 

The show, which explores the effects of 

migration on second-generation artists, 

was collaboratively developed by the Aga 

Khan Museum and Luciano Benetton’s 

Fondazione Imago Mundi. For more than 

three years, the museum collaborated 

closely with the Ismaili Council of Florida to 

bring this collection of colorful artworks to 

Orlando. There are 15 artists represented 

in the exhibition, representing 25 different 

nations. 

The District 42 representative for the 

Florida State House, Anna V. Eskamani, 

highlighted the exhibition’s significance: 

“Exhibitions like these show the world who 

Orlando is. It reveals our identity to the 

outside world that we are part of. All our 

experiences matter and that it is up to us 

to define who we are in light of the diversity 

that makes up our backgrounds. 

Orlando’s mayor, Buddy Dyer, 

acknowledges the value of variety and 

considers it to be one of the city’s greatest 

assets, saying, “We have cultures and 

traditions that pretty well represent every 

country in the world. Orlando should be as 

fair and inclusive as it possibly can be. Due 

to this, the show is extremely significant and 

a perfect fit for the Orlando Museum.” 

The Orlando Museum of Art and the 

Ismaili Council of Florida have just entered 

into this new cooperation. The main 

objective of this exhibition is to foster 

constructive interactions between various 

groups and contribute to the community’s 

values of civic engagement, intellectual 

curiosity, and services. 

At the Orlando Museum of Art, the 

exhibition Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From is 

presently on display. On March 20, 2023, 

the display will end. 


The show, which explores the effects

An artist whose style 

evolved around respecting 

his subjects’ proportions 

“The one thing that has remained constant throughout my 

work is the importance of my subject’s gaze. For me, the eyes 

truly are the window into the soul,” says Gerardo. 


Born in Venezuela in 1971, 

Gerardo Labarca began painting 

and drawing people close and 

important to him from his early 

childhood. 

“This was only a hobby, yet my family 

was constantly impressed and surprised 

by how closely I captured my subject’s 

resemblance. This need to express myself 

artistically stayed with me throughout my 

adult life,” says Gerardo. 

In 1993, at 21, Gerardo Labarca 

immigrated to Montreal alone to begin 

his first great adventure in life. To support 

himself financially, he began working in 

restaurants, at the bottom, washing dishes. 

As he learned his way in society, he slowly 

moved his way up from one position to 

another, working hard over the years 

until, eventually, he was running a 5-star 

restaurant. 

“25 years of my life were spent dedicated 

to mastering the restaurant industry in 

Montreal - a difficult, unforgiving industry. 

Understandably, I didn’t have much time to 

paint,” reminisces Gerardo. 

Gerardo recollects that leaving his 

business was the hardest decision he has 

ever taken. As a restauranter, his need to 

artistically express himself was satiated. 

As the creative director and owner of the 

Mezcia, named one of the best restaurants 

in Canada, he knew that his artistic side 

still lives in him. He realized that he had 

chosen this path due to necessity rather 

than passion. 

“During the last year that I had Mezcia, I 

hung up a painting I made specifically for 

the dining room. This painting attracted a lot 

of attention, leading to many clients offering 

to acquire it, each client was surprised that 

the artist was the owner of the restaurant. It 

was at this point that I started to consider 

painting professionally. But knowing myself, 

knowing that I don’t take half-measures, 

I knew I couldn’t do both. I need to throw 

myself in 100%, so I took a huge risk and 

embarked on another great challenge, 

another adventure.” says Gerardo. 

Gerardo Labarca’s first painting as a fulltime 

artist was a portrait of Charlie Chaplin. 

As someone who considered Chaplin a true 

genius and his all-time inspiration, Gerardo 

knew that this painting would define the 

type of artist he wished to become. 

“I used this work as a testing ground 

for ideas that had been trapped inside me 

all these years. I applied layer after layer 

after layer, almost subconsciously, trying to 

capture what this mythical person meant 

to me. To this day, this work remains in my 

private collection, a reminder of my humble 

beginnings.” 

Today, he mainly works with acrylics but 

has a flexible approach to using different 

mediums to achieve the depth and texture 

he desires. As an artist, his style evolved 

around respecting his subjects’ proportions. 

From larger to smaller and more 

independent brushstrokes, he began to 

introduce more complex sources of details 

around his subject. 

“The one thing that has remained 

constant throughout my work is the

search for subjects that speak through their 

eyes and dedicate countless hours trying to 

capture what they communicate. The details 

I add are my projection and interpretation of 

what I imagine they are feeling. I immerse 

myself entirely in my subject when I paint

them, listen to their music, read about their 

life, looking at their art. It is only then that I 

can fully be satisfied with my work.” 

Using social media as an invaluable tool 

to share this work, Gerardo worked hard to 

define his place in the artistic community. 

“Art has been democratized and is 

accessible to everyone,” concludes 

Gerardo. “I think artists have a responsibility 

to share their unique vision and point of 

view in a time that desperately needs 

it. I hope my art and career continue to 

grow steadily so that I can maintain this 

lifestyle that I finally chose, settled in the 

countryside, surrounded by nature and 

tranquillity after the constant drone of the 

restaurant business – to continue painting, 

learning new techniques, new ways to 

transmit my feelings through my portraits.”

Shaima Al Awadhi 

An up-and-coming Emirati artist, Shaima 

Al Awadhi, was born in 1990. She is a 

versatile artist who is receptive to a wide 

range of methods and genres, but her 

strengths lie in the use of mixed media, 

realistic portraits, landscapes, and abstract 

works, as well as digital painting. 

She sees narrative as a type of art. 

It allows us the chance to picture what 

is on our minds and how we want to 

communicate with our audience through the 

canvas and other visual mediums. 

In addition to being shortlisted for 

the Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award, 

Shaima was chosen as one of the top 5 art 

students in the world for GCSE studies and 

participated in the 50 Artist for 50th UAE 

National Day celebration with Dubai Culture 

& Authority as well as the Alliance Française 

in Dubai and Paris. 

As an Emirati artist, she considers herself 

fortunate to be sponsored by numerous 

organisations and people who encourage 

her to reach her full potential. 

As His Highness Shaikh Mohammed 

bin Rashid once observed, “The 

word impossible does not exist in our 

vocabulary,” the development of this nation 

into a global centre for the arts and design,

ARTIST IN FOCUS 

Sumayyah Al Suwaidi 

Abu Dhabi-based Emirati artist 

Sumayyah Al Suwaidi is a multiple awardwinning 

talent. In 1996, she discovered 

her love for digital art, and in 2001, she 

debuted her first collection, which was 

influenced by the late Sheikh Zayed 

Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. She starts each 

piece with a sketch or a straightforward 

snapshot and then adds textures, colours, 

and contrasts to create works that are 

one-of-a-kind and priceless. Her debut 

exhibition, which featured several of the 

UAE’s pioneering artists, took place in Abu 

Dhabi in 2003. She soon started displaying 

her artwork in galleries across the UAE, 

London, the USA, China, France, Germany, 

Switzerland, Morocco, and Kuwait, among 

other places. 

Her work was included in an auction by 

Christie’s in 2012 as part of the Modern and 

Contemporary Arab, Iranian, and Turkish 

Art Part II, and it was displayed in 2013 as 

a part of the Three Generations exhibition at 

Sotheby’s Galleries in London.

Jais Sledder 

Sitting peacefully on a low-lying track is the Jais Sledder. 

Hurtling down the Hajar mountain range at up to 40 kph 

while swerving through gorgeous vistas and taking in 

sights of the breathtaking coastline. 

1,840 thrilling meters of hairpin curves and undulating 

waves are covered in the course of the ride, which lasts for 

around eight minutes. The sleds are made to comfortably 

accommodate two persons, one in the front and the other 

in the back. Each sledder has access to the braking 

system, and you are securely fastened within the sled.

Jais Flight 

The longest zipline in the world is called Jais Flight.

adventure 1680 meters over the Arabian Gulf. 

A 9-tonne glass-bottomed platform with a glass bottom

“Reality depends more on the artist’s ability to communicate ideas or emotions rather than the 

simple or complex representation of what is visually perceived,” say the Pardo Brothers. 


Javier and Miguel Ángel Pardo 

Ordóñez were born in Madrid, 1977. 

After graduating from the Faculty of 

Fine Arts in Madrid, they specialized 

in “Plastic Arts” six years later (2004), 

they obtained the degree of Doctor Cum 

Laude in Fine Arts from the Complutense 

University of Madrid in 2009. Currently, 

teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts of 

Madrid, UCM. 

At the Faculty of Fine Arts, their pictorial 

training took place under an artistic 

philosophy marked by the teaching of the 

painter and teacher Florencio Galindo, as 

well as created the opportunity to connect 

with the Spanish realism of the time, such 

as José Hernández and Antonio López 

García, among others. 

“From the first day we were accepted 

into the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty 

showed us a vision of art that we were 

completely unaware of, “ say the Pardo 

Brothers. 

Since their beginnings, the Pardo 

brothers have been faithful to their 

principles of this spirit, identifying 

themselves with this form of expression. 

During these years, they needed to learn 

the properties of the Spanish pictorial

realism influenced by Weyth to Barceló. 

“Painting is the 

material that reveals 

all its mysteries and 

its encounters with 

palpable, physical, and 

sensitive reality,” said 

Pardo brothers. 

They describe that “this reality does not 

exist in the work of art, in the support, in 

the painting; what exists is our reality that 

of each one of us. It is its greatness and 

its mystery. Making the body visible, its 

incorporeal essence”. 

In art, reality is much more complex 

and subjective than what is conventionally 

understood by assimilating it only with 

figuration. In the painting of the Pardo 

brothers, reality is only the starting 

point, whereby they can express and 

materialize specific intangible 

values such as emotion, 

mystery, environment, or 

atmosphere, concepts that 

cannot be felt or touched 

but can be “painted”. They 

show us the difference between things 

that belong to a reason and things that 

really belong to senses; in other words, 

the difference between things that are and 

the things that are really seen. Therefore, 

abstraction becomes the ideal path toward 

researching, analyzing, and studying such 

intangible values. 

“Painting is the material that reveals 

all its mysteries and its encounters with 

palpable, physical, and sensitive reality. 

Deeping as deeply as possible into the 

matter of nature, or rather to “emerge” from 

this matter, is for us, a real plastic discovery.

iconographic subjects of the work try to 

answer fundamental questions about the

Their attitude towards the painting is 

always non-conformist and, with a certain 

rebelliousness, becomes a constant whose 

argument is to give evidence of the loss 

of values and “conflicts” in our society, 

making a mark forever on the epidermis of 

the painting (regrets, testimonies, padlocks 

that suggest certain prohibitions, graffiti 

that suggest that the artist is a “man of the 

cloth”). The work of the Pardo brothers is far 

from being a “friendly” painting where the 

surfaces speak for themselves. 

“These surfaces disclose to us that 

beauty can be discovered in the most 

personal realities closest to the artist,” they 

conclude.

UAE faces, increased demand for 

African art has people’s growing curiosity 

In a recent week-long exhibition titled 

“Breaking the Mold,” eleven emerging 

artists from the Democratic Republic 

of the Congo displayed their work in a 

warehouse close to Alserkal Avenue, Dubai’s 

arts quarter. The artists, who were all former 

students of the Academy of Fine Arts in 

Kinshasa, the DRC’s capital, attempted 

to break free from the restrictions of their 

academic background; this is implied by the 

title. 

A featured artist was the photographer 

Arlette Bashizi. Her “Re-construction” series 

of self-portraits challenges stereotypes 

and assumptions about black, African 

(particularly Congolese) women. 

Multidisciplinary artist Chris Shongo gave 

Congolese women the status of Egyptian 

queen Nefertiti, to whom he traced the 

ancestry of African women, in his work 

“Nefercongo.” The group supporting 

Congolese art, Yetu Management, which 

recently built a gallery in Kinshasa, organized 

the exhibition. 

At the most recent Abu Dhabi Art fair, 

some African artists were competing for the 

first time, demonstrating the UAE’s rising 

interest in African art. For instance, Kavita 

Chellaram’s Kó, an art space in Lagos, 

Nigeria, participated physically for the first 

time in 2021 after participating online in 2020. 

The Afriart Gallery, situated in Kampala, 

Uganda, participated for the second time 

and displayed works by the Ugandan artists 

Mona Taha and Sanaa Gateja, with prices 

ranging from $4,000 to $30,000. 

A more durable institution in the UAE art 

scene is the Efie Gallery, founded by the 

Ghanaian family Valentina, Kwame, and Kobi 

Mintah. It recently celebrated its one year 

anniversary at Al-Khayat Art Avenue in Dubai. 

In the year since it first opened, Efie 

Gallery has hosted seven exhibitions, 

including the first solo show in the city for 

renowned Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui and 

a collaboration exhibition with UK auction 

house Christie’s that featured El Anatsui’s 

work alongside quickly rising Ghanaian 

artists Isshaq Ismail and Yaw Owusu. 

The development of Efie Gallery has 

been influenced by the growing demand for 

African art in the international art market. 

According to a recent edition of ArtTactic’s 

Modern and Contemporary African Artist 

Market Report, which looks at auction sales 

between 2016 and 2021, African art has 

grown in popularity, with sales increasing 

by 44 percent in 2021, from $50 million in 

2020 to $72 million last year. Additionally, 

contemporary art galleries around the world 

are becoming more eager to exhibit pieces 

from the continent.

attracts us and takes us on a fresh new journey.” says Ramona Nordal. 


Canadian-born artist Ramona 

Nordal studied art at the Emily 

Carr Institute of Art and Design 

in Vancouver, British Columbia. 

There she studied lithography, colour 

theory, painting and drawing with a focus 

on anatomy drawing and painting. Colour 

theory has always been a huge part of 

Nordal’s process, and she is quickly 

becoming known for her richly evocative 

colour palette. The central theme that 

unites all of her work is the mixture of the 

traditional with the unconventional, not only 

in her subject matter and colour palette 

but also in her approach to materials and 

technique. 

Nordal pushes artistic boundaries by 

incorporating drawing within her work. 

This is evident in the intricately detailed 

penwork of her subjects’ faces. Nordal is 

hyper-aware of art’s relationship with human 

emotion, and her subjects reflect this as 

they captivate you and entice you into their 

world. At first glance, they look familiar and 

then upon a closer look you see references 

from the 1800’s all the way through to an 

almost futuristic take on society. Her work 

can be found in Canada, the United States, 

Mexico, Australia, Hong Kong and Europe. 

The central theme that unites all of her 

work is the mixture of the traditional with 

the unconventional, not only in her subject 

matter and colour palette but also in her 

approach to materials and technique. She 

focuses mainly on female subjects in her 

work in an attempt to capture their strength 

and uniqueness. At first glance her figures 

appear bold yet offer almost ethereal 

characteristics. Nordal pushes artistic 

boundaries by incorporating drawing within 

her work. This is evident in the intricately 

detailed penwork of her subjects’ faces. 

The softness of the drawing mixed with the 

boldness of the bodies and background 

create an incredible fusion that offers just 

the right amount of tension. 

Her subjects are a mixture of the female 

form with references as early as the late 

1800’s to the 1970s. By combining several 

decades she somehow creates figures that 

are uniquely Nordal. She is hyper-aware of 

art’s relationship with human emotion and 

her subjects reflect this as they captivate 

you and entice you into their world. 

“I find I get bored

on three or four 

paintings at a time it 

keeps things fresh for 

me,” says Ramona 

Nordal. 

Nordal works on several pieces at once 

in her studio in Toronto stating “I find I get

halfway through the day and start working 

on another one. This allows me the freedom 

to work on several different collections at 

once. I like the randomness of the process.”

I recently participated in Context Art 

Miami during Art Basel Miami week. 

It was an incredible experience being able 

to participate in this kind of show. Art Basel 

week in Miami attracts collectors from all 

over the world. It is very rare to be able to 

have the opportunity to have such a large 

audience viewing your work. I also enjoyed 

viewing artwork from the various shows. It 

was extremely inspiring and somehow put 

a perspective on my own work and where 

I am in my career. I found it very helpful in 

allowing me to turn a new chapter in my 

career and to push my artistic boundaries 

as I begin a new body of work for 2023. 

Nordal is represented by galleries in 

the United States, Canada, Germany and 

Australia. Her work has been collected 

in Canada, the United States, Mexico, 

Australia, Singapore and Europe. Ramona 

Nordal currently lives and works in Toronto,

220 artworks of Philip Guston to be 

donated by the artist’s daughter to the Metropolitan 

Museum of New York 

In a potentially game-changing donation 

that will make the Metropolitan Museum 

of New York the museum with the 

greatest collection of Philip Guston 

artwork in the world, Musa Mayer, the 

artist’s daughter, will donate 220 of her 

father’s works. 

Guston is one of the most important 20thcentury 

American artists, the subject of a 

traveling retrospective. Before transitioning 

to a popular type of abstraction in the years 

after World War II, he painted angular, 

impenetrable figurations at the start of his 

career. He then shocked critics by returning 

to figuration in the 1960s. 

The paintings he produced at the time—a 

sequence of pictures showing Ku Klux Klan 

members in absurdist situations—became 

a flashpoint in 2020, as the National Gallery 

of Art in Washington, D.C., was preparing to 

host the current retrospective. 

Out of worry that some people might 

not be able to understand Guston’s 

messages, the museum and the other three 

co-organizing organizations postponed 

the performance and said that it would be 

changed. This choice was the subject of 

fierce discussion both inside and outside 

the art world. 

The exhibit eventually debuted in 2022 

at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; at the 

moment, it is on display at the Museum of 

Fine Arts Houston in a completely revised 

version, complete with trigger warnings. 

Numerous Guston works, including 

several important ones from the artist’s first 

retrospective in 2003, are already part of 

The Met’s collection. Mayer’s promised gift, 

which includes several works that are a part 

of the present retrospective and are nearly 

unmatched by any other institution, will help 

create a more comprehensive picture of 

Guston’s body of work.

Ohio’s “Octagon Earthworks” is proposed 

as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 

The court ruled that the Ohio golf 

course surrounding an old Native 

American Earthwork Monument 

was significant enough to be 

considered for UNESCO World Heritage 

Site classification, and thereby the lease 

must be terminated. 

The Octagon Earthwork in Newark, Ohio, 

is one of eight complexes of clay mounds 

constructed by the now-extinct Hopewell 

culture. These 2,000-year-old buildings 

were probably used as observatories. 

The largest and best preserved of these 

complexes is the Octagon Earthwork. 

Previously, a militia camp was located on 

the property. However, in 1910, the Mound 

Builders Country Club leased the property 

and built a golf course. Since then, they

have kept up the mounds. Some individuals 

believe that the golf course included in the 

US National Register of Historic Places in 

1964 was not the ideal location for it.

region accessible to the general public for 

it to be listed on the UNESCO list of world 

heritage sites. In 2018, The Ohio History 

Connection made an $800,000 purchase 

bid, but they increased it to $1.7 million 

after the property received that appraisal.

Is the minimalist movement 

working against our roots? 

Questions such as these allow 

us to understand and redefine 

the avenues we have chosen 

in our lives. Such roads tend 

to shape our personal, professional, and 

social personalities in ways that we seldom 

understand but feel their omnipresent 

effects. 

One such effect is the minimalist 

movement. 

Minimalism requires its practitioners to 

reduce the clutter they face in their daily 

lives, space, and actions. When one applies 

the same principle towards creativity 

and consumption, minimalism asks us to 

understand the adage that less is more. 

Less is more, as a concept has been 

seen to be extensively used in the creative 

world, but today questions are being raised 

about the sphere of influence of this adage 

in one’s life and action. Is this influence 

of the minimalist movement a benefit or 

a deterrent to one’s social, personal, and 

professional lives, and is this movement 

asking us to sacrifice elements, both 

creative and material, that defines who we 

are? 

Roots. The roots of a plant are not in 

question, but rather the roots that you trace 

back to your upbringing and that define 

what sort of a person you are. Your roots 

define your past and give meaning to your 

present. 

Our roots are a product of a different time 

and do not conform to modern creative 

concepts. These learnings, habits and 

beliefs that make up our roots are a product 

of thousands of years of human evolution 

and often embody valuable lessons in life 

and ways to make choices for a better one. 

Minimalism asks us to let go of the 

excess and strive to live with the minimum. 

Comparing this philosophy with one’s 

culture and traditions, people do feel and 

understand the stark opposite nature of the 

teachings of these philosophies. 

The philosophy of minimalism is often 

seen as a product of the well-to-do 

rather than the common people, for it 

demands us to reduce distractions and 

other commitments to one’s circle. This 

simply cannot happen in the lives of the 

middle and lower classes due to their 

responsibilities. But that is where we can 

introduce another argument that just might 

be able to answer the question. 

With the stark limitations of minimalism 

when compared to the vibrant and 

contagious energy of one’s culture, we 

realize that this comparison fails to make 

sense when we see it from a specific 

perspective. Such concerns are valid and 

well-founded, for the beauty of one’s culture 

and traditions are often realized in the belief 

that it is full of life, and this saying does not 

and will not explicitly invite the minimalism 

philosophy in it. 

Minimalism asks us to reduce the clutter 

in one’s life. Clutter could be the physical 

haphazardness of things in your room, or 

it could be the distractions in your daily life 

that have a detrimental effect on you. 

Focusing on the philosophy of 

minimalism rather than its creative output, 

people can hope to realize that minimalism 

is just another pitstop in our lives for finding 

a better formula that helps us deal with 

problems and rise above them. 

When we allow this perspective and 

choose to think from this viewpoint, we 

stand to realize that creative or design 

thinking movements do not impact our 

roots, for they can only do so if we allow it or 

misunderstand what it means. Minimalism 

simply means to reduce the unwanted parts 

of our lives, and that can be simply a vital 

chance attitude that can help numerous 

individuals find a better way to live. 

At the end of the day, the minimalist 

movement is a creative and design-thinking 

movement that is gaining traction. Yes, the 

people are split between getting behind it 

and against it for numerous reasons that are 

not the purview of this article. Rather, the 

belief that minimalism invites us to rethink 

the unnecessary or excessive aspects of 

life, both materialistic and abstract, can 

be learnt to let go to make space for more 

meaningful experiences.

offering IT solutions to various industries,

worldwide, created ftNFT – a unique NFT

“The human form and face are the most important elements in my paintings. The

form. Sometimes anonymous, other times with a recognizable mien.” says Sarah. 


Sarah creates her paintings across 

multiple genres and with a constant 

desire to try new techniques and 

approaches. She works with a wide 

palette of (materials /tools) such as acrylic 

paint, oil pastels, charcoal, and crayons on 

canvas and paper. Sarah has a weakness 

for Gold colour that she uses in different 

materials and structures, almost becoming 

a trademark in her paintings. 

Born, raised and awarded a university 

degree in Interior Design in the Caribbean. 

Sarah later moved to Paris to learn French 

and study Fashion Illustration. She has 

exhibited her paintings in numerous 

galleries, art shows and -associations in 

Denmark, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, and 

Sweden.

The painting process is more of an 

experimental conversation rather than 

something planned. Each successive layer 

of paint is a reaction to the layer that came 

before - a dialogue between myself, the 

colours and the painting. I have found that 

the best work comes from conversations 

in which I have done the most careful 

listening,” says Sarah Peguero. 

“I share a little piece of my heart in every 

painting I create. I rarely know beforehand 

how the new artwork will shape and 

develop. Nothing is given or decided; the 

blank canvas itself provokes inspiration.” 

“It is exciting to stand in front of a white 

canvas. A thousand thoughts and artworks 

start to dance in my head. I just get started,

Sculptor Veronica Ryan wins the 

Turner Prize, the U.K.’s most esteemed art 

award 

Veronica Ryan, who participated 

in the Whitney Biennial earlier 

this year, has added the largest 

art award in the U.K. to her list 

of achievements. Sculptor Veronica Ryan 

has been named the winner of the Turner 

Prize 2022, worth £25,000 ($30,500), for 

her work, which honors the Windrush 

generation and explores the COVID 

pandemic. 

Sin Wai Kin, Ingrid Pollard, and Heather 

Phillipson, the other artists who made 

the shortlist, will each receive £10,000 

($12,200). The works of these artists are all 

currently on display at Tate Liverpool in a 

show. 

The Turner Prize, an honor that frequently 

sparks debate in the U.K. and elsewhere, 

hasn’t had just one winner since 2018; that 

changed this year. All four nominees were 

successful in 2019, but grants were given 

instead of the award in 2020, and Array 

Collective became the first artist collective 

to win the award in 2021. 

Veronica frequently experiments with 

scale in her sculptures, enlarging everyday 

materials like seeds or fruit well beyond 

their natural size. Ryan’s illustrations of them 

are minutely detailed and strangely realistic 

despite their extraordinary size. 

Born in Montserrat and based in London 

and New York, Veronica has used her work 

to consider how trauma is passed down 

through families and how people and ideas 

travel. She described memory as “a kind 

of stained history” in the Whitney Biennial 

catalog, and she incorporated this idea into 

her work by using unusual materials like 

tea. Although the overall themes of her work 

can seem simple, the things she creates 

defy straightforward interpretation. 

Veronica received a commission to 

design a monument honoring the Windrush 

Generation for London in 2021. The final 

product included mammoth renditions 

of Caribbean fruits like custard apples, 

breadfruit, and soursop. 

Veronica’s “noticeable shift in her use 

of space, color, and scale both in the 

gallery and civic spaces” was praised by 

the Turner Prize jury. After Lubaina Himid 

was awarded the Turner Prize in 2017, 

Veronica is the second black woman to ever 

receive the honor in its 38-year history. As 

it happens, Himid included Ryan’s creation 

in the critical 1983 exhibition “Black Women 

Time Now.”

Takashi Murakami 

A collection of sculptures and paintings honouring 

Mr. DOB, the artist’s legendary creation from 1993, 

are featured in the exhibition’s opening. Several 

anime characters, including Doraemon, Sonic, and 

Mickey Mouse, served as inspiration for Mr. DOB’s 

design. 

His name is a shortened version of the Japanese 

slang word “dobojite,” which means “why.” The 

letters of Mr. DOB’s name are still visible on his face 

and ears despite the countless changes he has 

undergone throughout the years. 

The DOB character has a sophisticated psyche 

and has accompanied Takashi Murakami in his 

existential reflections to the point of becoming the 

artist’s avatar. 

The sculpture Together with the Flower 

Parent and Child, which is displayed here in a 

multicoloured version, features the reoccurring motif 

of flowers, another identifier of Takashi Murakami’s 

work.

Opened in 2002, the Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a 

stunning work of architecture and engineering. 

Located over the N302 road, the Aqueduct forms 

part of a lake of the same name. The road itself 

is interesting, connecting mainland Netherlands 

to Flevoland — the largest artificial island in the 

world. 

During the design of the unique bridge structure, 

engineers chose to construct the waterway over 

the N302 road, where around 28,000 vehicles 

pass each day.

symbolizes a deep intergenerational link.
