Alpha sessions
for Newport
A series of interactive ‘Alpha’
sessions that explore the basics
of the Christian faith will be
held in Newport. Organisers
say it’s about the big questions
most people ask themselves
at some stage in their life,
such as: ‘What am I here for?’
Alpha runs in 169 countries,
with more than 29 million
people having experienced it.
Alpha will run from Thursday
2 February at Pittwater
Presbyterian Church, Newport.
Sessions will run for 1½ hours
each Thursday over a 10-weeks
period. Each session has
three phases: food, video and
discussion. More info Phil or
Clubs in favour of
cashless payments
ClubsNSW says that despite
recent media reports to the
contrary, its member clubs
support cashless gaming
technology. ClubsNSW
Chairman Dr George
Peponis said while some had
attempted to misrepresent the
club industry’s position on
cashless gaming, it had a long
track record of support for
digital payment options and
responsible gambling. “It’s our
belief that people should have
the ability to pay for play on
a poker machine using cash
or digital technology – just
as they have options when it
comes to paying for everything
else,” Dr Peponis said. However,
he added ClubsNSW was
“not convinced” about an
untested mandatory cashless
card. “The international
experience demonstrates that
forcing players to use cards
drives recreational players
to other forms of gambling,
in particular to unregulated
online casinos, and can
exacerbate problem gambling.”
