Orions take<br />

to sky for<br />

final flight<br />

TWO ROYAL New Zealand<br />

Air Force P-3K2 Orions have<br />

made their last flight over the<br />

city after nearly 60 years of<br />

service.<br />

<strong>The</strong> last pair of Orions fleet<br />

flew over the South Island in<br />

formation, setting out from<br />

RNZAF’s Woodbourne base in<br />

Blenheim on Tuesday.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were spotted over<br />

Christchurch about 11.50am.<br />

<strong>The</strong> surveillance planes first<br />

arrived in New Zealand in<br />

1966 and were operated by the<br />

No 5 squadron. <strong>The</strong> fleet of six<br />

Orions will be replaced by four<br />

Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Orions were used for<br />

surveillance and reconnaissance<br />

missions, mainly in the<br />

South Pacific and the Southern<br />

Ocean, including Antarctica.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were also used for search<br />

and rescue operations, helping<br />

to locate hundreds of people<br />

missing at sea and drifting<br />

vessels.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were often the first<br />

aircraft to arrive at the scene of<br />

natural disasters in the Pacific<br />

region.<br />

stop regular malicious sprinkler<br />

system activations to Te Puna<br />

Wai youth justice residence at<br />

Rolleston.<br />

Rolleston Volunteer Fire<br />

Brigade members are potentially<br />

being diverted from other emergency<br />

call-outs when they respond<br />

to the false alarm call-outs.<br />

Over the last five weeks there has<br />

been a high number, including 13<br />

so far this year to January 29.<br />

FENZ recently met with facility<br />

operator Oranga Tamariki on the<br />

issue.<br />

Canterbury Dean Harker said<br />

personnel were now working<br />

with police to educate the youth<br />

responsible.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were also working closely<br />

with fire alarm installation and<br />

monitoring specialists, staff at<br />

the facility and Rolleston brigade<br />

members.<br />
