The Rebirth of St George’s
Institute, Sissinghurst
Fernham Homes has
now secured planning
permission for a new
St George’s Institute
building and the
enabling housing development
to the rear of the current hall.
Full details are on the TWBC
planning portal, Ref Nos:
21/03914/FULL. There are also
posters in the hall and in the
village shop window.
The hall management
committee has up to six months
to enter into a building contract.
It is anticipated that the hall will
close around April/May for 12 to
14 months while the new hall is
built. We will be assisting current
hirers in finding temporary
Employment Law that
works for you.

farewell event in the hall prior to
its demolition.
I know that the old green hut
is much loved by many and an
historical/archive video will
be made to document what
is currently there. The new
building will also reflect, in some
way, the old hall.
There are meeting minutes
showing that a new hall has
been under consideration many
times over the past 40+ years.
The trustees’ objective from the
outset, over three years ago, has
been to deliver a new fit-forpurpose
community hall with no
debt, which is both affordable to
hire (approximately £10–£15/hr,
currently £8/hr) and economic to
operate.
The new hall will have a small
meeting room that could be
run as a pop-up café or a shop.

The St George’s Institute is
in the process of changing from
current Small Charity status
to a Community Incorporated
Organisation (CIO). This is the
recommended structure for
trusts operating village halls and
community facilities.
