SailGP racing to
stop if dolphins
spotted
• By Tony Simons
SAILGP RACE organisers will
now rely on sighting hector’s
dolphins to keep them safe
during next month’s racing on
Lyttelton Harbour.
A decision not to use a
deterrent device means the
mammals will now be free
to swim where they like, and
racing will be called off if they
are seen or heard anywhere near
the racecourse and high speed
catamarans.
Organisers are employing
several detection strategies
focusing on four zones in
the harbour, stretching from
the harbour mouth to the
racecourse.
The SailGP Marine Mammal
Management Plan states if
dolphins are detected in zone
four,
the
nearest
zone to the
racecourse,
the boats will be ordered to
stop.
Water grading assessment rethink likely
• By Tony Simons
A NEW approach by
Environment Canterbury as to
how long-term water quality
grades are assigned at swim sites
around Lyttelton seems likely,
after it has agreed to change the
way it models sites for swimming
suitability.
ECan science
team leader Shirley
Hayward said it is
possible predictive
modelling might
also change the way
Shirley
Hayward
long-term swim
grades for the bays
are assessed, to take
into account predictable rainfall-driven
contamination.
It comes after considerable
public pressure over how ECan
grades swimming sites longterm,
particularly at popular
sites like Corsair Bay and Cass
Bay.
Corsair Bay was graded
“unsuitable for swimming”
for the entire summer because
of high bacteria readings over
the past five years – many of
those readings coinciding with
high rainfall. However, testing
through January this year
showed the water quality was
good to excellent.
In a report due to be presented
to ECan’s water and land
committee today, science team
leader Shirley Hayward said “in
response to concerns raised by
the community this summer, we
will investigate a new approach
whereby rainfall-affected results
can be predicted”.
“We will look at new ways to
communicate the public health
risks adequately to the community,”
Hayward said.
This will include consistent
messaging, including signage, of
those risks.
Staff will also continue with
faecal source tracking and other
investigations to try to find
out why sites have degraded,
Hayward said.
The suggested change in
approach will rely on other organisations,
such as Community
and Public Health Te Mana Ora
agreeing, she said.
The grading issue came into
focus again last Wednesday
when 21mm of rain fell around
the Port Hills, washing faecal
bacteria into the sea.
Te Mana Ora immediately
issued a health warning for most
of Banks Peninsula, which was
lifted on Monday.
Rakiura
The wild landscapes of Stewart Island by
Rob Brown
Stewart Island/Rakiura is an island that is increasingly cherished
by New Zealanders, whose appreciation for its wild character
has flourished in recent years. This revised edition of Rakiura, the
work of leading landscape photographer Rob Brown, was first
published in 2006. Critically acclaimed at the time, his original
large-format photographs remain as powerful as ever, while more
recent photographs have been added along with an updated, and
newly illustrated introduction, which covers the natural and human
history of the island, and the inspiring efforts to restore the island’s
wildlife. This book is a stunning momento for visitors and everyone
interested in Rakiura.
Tails of Tangleby Gardens
by Sue Heazlewood, illustrated by Jane Smith
What a delight for families with children! Tails of Tangleby Gardens combines a
whimsical story with 40 recipes suitable for children to make.
We follow the story of two newly married rabbits, Montgomery and Marmalade,
who have to escape their cosy warren in Christchurch when it is demolished by
a big yellow digger. They are forced to move from the city and start a new life
elsewhere. Along the way, they encounter friends and many adventures, and in
every part of the story, Marmalade shares her recipes..
Tails of Tangleby Gardens is a unique and enchanting book. The story has a gentle,
magical quality, and the recipes are graded from very easy, to easy, to some skill
required, so suitable for young cooks of different abilities. There is even a QR code
that can be downloaded, but I actually like the idea of the book being used in the
kitchen, even if it does end up with a bit of food on it!
Brumby Challenge, Nina has to pinch herself to believe it. She and Shyla swiftly form
a close bond, but all the time Nina knows that the little Brumby is destined for auction,
and the dream pony she has worked so hard to train will go to another child.
Nina’s wild pony adventure will take her to Australia’s Snowy Mountains and back —
but will she get the chance to have a wild Brumby of her own?
From the author of the bestselling Showtym Adventures, this novel is inspired by the
Wilson sisters’ exciting true experiences with wild horses.
Birnam Wood
by Eleanor Catton
Birnam Wood is on the move ... A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass in the
South Island of New Zealand, cutting off the town of Thorndike, leaving a sizable farm
abandoned. This land offers an opportunity to Birnam Wood, a guerrilla gardening
collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. But they hadn’t figured on the
enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine, who also has an interest in the place.
Can they trust him? And, as their ideals and ideologies are tested, can they trust each
other? A gripping thriller from the Booker Prize-winning author of The Luminaries,
Birnam Wood is Shakespearean in its wit, drama and immersion in character. A
brilliantly constructed tale of intentions, actions and consequences, it is an unflinching
examination of the human impulse to ensure our own survival.
China After Mao - The Rise of a
Superpower
By Frank Dikoetter
‘A leading historian of modern China. He is a rare scholar, adept in both Russian and
Chinese . . . Combined with this linguistic skill, Dikoetter has a writer’s gift’ EVENING
STANDARD From the Samuel Johnson Prize-winning author of Mao’s Great Famine, a
timely and compelling account of China in the wake of Chairman Mao In China After
Mao, award-winning historian Frank Dikoetter explores how the People’s Republic
of China was transformed from a backwater economy in the 1970s into the world
superpower of today. His account is the first to be based on hundreds of previously
unseen archival documents, from the secret minutes of top party meetings to confidential
bank reports. Unfolding with great narrative sweep, this riveting, richly detailed chronicle
recasts our understanding of an era that both the regime and foreign admirers celebrate
as an economic miracle. Ultimately, the book concludes, the communist party’s goal
was never to join the democratic sphere, but to resist it - and then defeat it.
While much of the events industry was shut
down through the peak of the Covid-19
pandemic the Sea2Sky Challenge managed
to navigate through the guidelines better
than most holding events in late 2020 along
with 2021 and 2022. The event returns on
March 12th for the eighth edition without
the restrictions of the last few years. With
individual and team triathlon, duathlon and
trail run options for juniors (5 years and up)
through to Masters of 80+ years there is
something for everyone. “In the last few years
we’ve had to split the event into groups of
100, tell spectators to stay away, mask up
along with other measures. It’s going to be
awesome to welcome everyone back this
year to finish the kiwi summer in style” says
event director John Newsom.
SUMNER SCHOOL pupils from
Kathryn Perks, who now lives
in Hawke’s Bay, used to attend
the school, and after visiting her
old stomping grounds last year
was inspired to organise a reunion
for her former classmates.
“I looked at old class photos
from 1962 to 1968, then tried
to contact as many as I could
through social media and Google.
I even tried the White Pages,”
she said.
Measures in place to locate dolphins
•From page 1
Once racing has stopped, a
SailGP spokesperson said the
yachts “will simply wait until (the
dolphins) leave”.
In zones one or two, dolphins
will be reported and tracked. If
they are in zone three, racing will
be delayed.
SailGP is experienced with the
issues and understands the risk,
the spokesperson said.
A key detection strategy will
include trained dolphin observers
and volunteers, stationed along
both sides of the harbour and in
boats, looking out for dolphins.
Experts say they may locate some
of the dolphins but not all of
them due to difficulty seeing the
mammals at any distance, particularly
if the water is choppy.
A second detection measure
will see a drone with artificial
intelligence
criss-cross the
harbour.
However,
the drone can’t
be used when
the boats are
racing because
of broadcast
Matt Pine
interference. It
will scan and
photograph
the surface before and after the
sailing sessions.
hydrophones attached to buoys
in the harbour, will operate just
east of the racing zone. They will
monitor continuously for the
echo-location of dolphins.
Underwater acoustic expert
Dr Matt Pine was consulted on
the MMMP and has now been
employed to do the listening.
He said the devices can pick up
dolphins pinging, or echo-locating,
up to a few hundred metres
away, depending on how noisy
they are.
“We expect in murky waters
like Lyttelton Harbour and in
busy environments, they will be
echo-locating most of the time,”
Pine said.
However, dolphin expert
Professor Liz Slooten, formerly
with the Zoology Department at
Otago University, disagreed.
“He (Pine) is wrong,” she said.
“When there is lots of noise it
makes more sense for a dolphin
to listen using its ears, because
sound carries much further than
echo-location. The dolphins may
simply turn their echo-location
off,” she said.
SailGP and ChristchurchNZ
will also be relying on spectators
PLAN: The zone boundaries
map for the SailGP race
shows where observers will
be looking and listening for
dolphins (pale green areas),
the land-based observation
stations (red dots) and the
approximate location of the
AI acoustic listening devices
(dark red line).
and race officials to report
dolphin sightings.
We are not relying on any
single dolphin detection measure,
said race organisers.
SailGP head of event and
commercial director Karl
Budge said:
“Based on the
advice of (the
Department of
Conservation)
and other
experts, we
Bay Harbour News Wednesday February 22 2023
NEWS
• By Tony Simons
A MEMBER of the team that
came up with a plan to protect
hector’s dolphins during next
month’s SailGP has revealed they
wrestled with their conscience
and considered resigning from
the group.
Many experts and stakeholders
were consulted over the Marine
Mammal Management Plan,
including Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke Rāpaki, the Department
of Conservation, Environment
Canterbury and university
marine specialists.
One expert has now told Bay
Harbour News they seriously
considered opting out, in part
because they were required to
sign a confidentiality agreement.
The expert said they had a real
problem with being gagged,
given the plan to hold the event
in a dolphin sanctuary was so
much in the public interest.
Once it was clear the SailGP
event was going ahead, members
of the group had to decide
whether they were in or out, the
expert said.
“Sometimes it is better to stay
in so you have some influence, so
I stayed in.”
Significant redactions were
made to the plan before it was
released by ChristchurchNZ in
December last year.
An un-redacted version was
leaked to Bay Harbour News
last week. It showed SailGP
organisers intended to use a
controversial acoustic deterrent
device to keep dolphins off the
racecourse. Organisers believed
the device would “help to protect
dolphins from the risk of vessel
strike, which is very likely to be
fatal”. However, the device was
later dropped when it became
clear no one knew how hector’s
dolphins might react to it.
When ChristchurchNZ
announced in early 2021 the
international sailing event was
coming to Lyttelton, it was
described as a massive coup.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Expert considered resigning over SailGP plan
New Zealand team member
Peter Burling said at the time
“we can’t wait to start racing
and sharing our Live Ocean
conservation message along the
way”.
Work started on the
MMMP soon after.
Said the expert: “I think
the final version of the
MMMP is probably not
far from the best you can
do, if you’ve already made
a very bad decision to hold
the race in a completely
inappropriate place.”
Dolphin researcher,
retired Otago Professor of
Liz Slooten
Zoology, Liz Slooten, said there
are likely to be up to 30 dolphins
in the harbour every day in
March. Many will have calves
with them, so they will be slower
and reluctant to dive deep.
The F50 catamarans will
also be practising at high
speeds in the day or days
preceding the event. The
expert said this is where
the real danger to dolphins
lies, because the MMMP
designates ‘free practice’
areas across most of the
harbour.
SailGP organisers did
not respond to a request by Bay
PLAN: One of the
two hydrophones (AI
programmed acoustic
listening devices)
that will be moored
in Lyttelton Harbour
to listen for dolphins
during SailGP racing.
Harbour News, asking what
specific measures would be taken
to protect dolphins during the
practice sessions.
Slooten said hector’s dolphins
have never interacted with these
types of high speed vessels
before.
“Two huge blades silently
slicing through the water at 100
km/h; the dolphins will never
have experienced anything like
this, the foils or the speeds with
which they will be moving. (It’s)
a similar experience to a remote
rainforest civilisation seeing a
warplane flying over their village
for the first time,” she said.
TRAPPING predators –
possums, rats, mice, stoats and
ferrets – and planting natives
are two steps we can all take to
encourage native birdsong back
to our communities.
“Now is the time to set your
traps,” said Predator Free Sumner
Bays member Paul Cragg.
“This is the prime breeding
time as the weather is warm and
there is plenty of food in your
garden and compost heap. This
means we have a lot of ‘naive’
youngsters out there who will be
curious about the traps, unlike
the more mature trap-shy rats.
“If we all become backyard
trappers we can make a difference
to the number of predators.
Besides protecting native birds,
rats and mice will be less likely
to live in your walls and ceilings
in winter, and eat your garden
produce in summer.”
Predator Free Sumner Bays
is one of several community
groups under the auspices of
Predator Free Port Hills. And,
Predator Free Port Hills is part
of the Summit Road Society;
as the name suggests, it takes a
leadership role in eliminating
predators on the Port Hills.
Founded by the late Jeremy
Agar, the focus is backyard
trapping in the urban fringe
surrounding the Port Hills and
Lyttelton harbour. It aims to
HAVE A CHAT: Predator Free Port Hills are at the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market on the second
Saturday of every month.
have a trap in one of every five
households.
Predator Free Port Hills co-ordinator
Marie Gray said it is a
simple concept, so it’s easy for
everyone to get involved.
“We are at the Mt Pleasant
markets on the second Saturday
of the month providing advice
and selling traps. We would love
to welcome you to our stall, and
to explain how you can help us
achieve more birdsong in our
community.
“We also have community days
where kids and their parents can
come and make traps for their
own gardens. Sign up online via
www.predatorfreeporthills.org.
nz”
Cragg has been a keen backyard
trapper for many years.
“Close to 10 years ago Redcliffs
resident John Cook held a meeting
in Sumner to discuss trapping
in the Upper Mahoe-nui
and Jollies Bush areas, and it
sparked my interest. Then Gabe
Ross started up Predator Free
Sumner Bays in 2017. And the
rest is history, as they say.”
Said Cragg: “Whilst we don’t
have accurate monitoring data,
we know we are making a
difference . . . So far, over 300
households have signed up, and
well over 1000 rats have been
trapped between Taylors Mistake
and Balmoral Hill.”
He said if we all become
backyard trappers, and plant
native trees and shrubs, we can
help bring about change in our
communities.
Tips for those new to
trapping:
· Set your trap along
the fenceline, in areas
with bush, or beside
the compost
· Set up the trap as a
rat café for a few days
i.e., bait but do not set
the trap. If it is being
cleared then the rats
and mice are happy to
feed there, so it’s time
to set the bait
· Trapped rodents
can be buried in the
garden, or placed in
the red bin
· If you have any
questions, come and
talk to Predator Free
Port Hills at the Mt
Pleasant market
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The leprosy colony on Quail Island
BETWEEN 1906 and 1927,
Ōtamahua Quail Island in the
middle of Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour was host to the South
Island’s only leprosy colony with
14 men incarcerated there.
Leprosy (or Hansen’s disease,
after the Norwegian doctor who
discovered its bacterial source
in 1873) is a disease known to
humankind for many thousands
of years.
Prior to advances in modern
medicine it was widely misunderstood
to be highly infectious,
and in many cultures sufferers
were ostracised. This was, in
part, because it can result in
disfiguring skin lesions and even
loss of extremities due to injuries
and infections. Infected people
suffer nerve damage, a consequent
lack of sensation, a decline
in muscle strength, and some go
blind. Public fear was exacerbated
by racial prejudice.
In early 20th century New
Zealand, health authorities
took a similar approach to
other Western countries in the
management of the disease by
embracing isolation practices.
In 1906, the first man diagnosed
with leprosy in Ōtautahi
Christchurch and held in isolation
on the island was Will
Vallane; although provided with
meals by a matron resident on
the island, he spent 18 months
primarily alone with his eyesight
and mobility failing. Initially
housed in the barn-like old quarantine
barracks, a purpose-built
cottage was constructed a year
after his arrival, more suitable
for a sole occupant. In 1908, he
was joined by a second sufferer
and a third in 1909.
More small cottages were built
as the population continued to
grow. Although the bay (now
called Skiers Bay) could be
delightful in summer, it lost the
sun behind a ridge as early as
2pm in winter.
The men had regular visits
from Lyttelton’s popular and
compassionate Dr Upham,
gardened and swam if health
permitted, listened to the radio
and kept pets (notably canaries,
a parrot and the wild island rabbits,
which they tamed). There
were occasional church services,
family visits and humanitarian
delegations, with visitors keeping
at least six feet away from the
men; white picket fences surrounding
the cottages marked
the dividing line between the
two groups. But their main
support was each other, although
the tensions arising from their
situation sometimes threatened
that vital camaraderie.
There is no doubt that the
enforced isolation weighed upon
the men, especially for those
whose health was declining.
A few men were released as
cured; George Philips, who was
declared free of the disease but
required to wait 18 months for
clearance before release, could
not tolerate that extra time. He
absconded via Moepuku Point,
arriving at Orton Bradley’s
house in Te Wharau Charteris
Bay so convincingly dressed
as a clergyman that he was
able to make a telephone call
and was last seen heading to
Christchurch in a taxi cab, where
he changed his name and disappeared
from public scrutiny.
There were two leprosy
deaths on the island. The most
well-known was a 25-year-old
Samoan-born man, Ivon Crispen
Skelton, who died on October
20, 1923, and was buried on the
headland facing Aua King Billy
Island with Reverend A.J. Petrie
of Holy Trinity presiding.
Apparently forgotten by history,
there was also 55-year-old
Te Iringa from Kirikau Pā on the
Whanganui River, whose death
and burial in 1922 were recorded
in The Press at the time; Father
Patrick Cooney of St Joseph’s
Catholic Church conducted his
service.
Skelton’s grave was originally
surrounded by a picket fence
and was the subject of an
archaeological dig in 2015.
Surprisingly, no remains were
found; it is postulated his grave
near the cliff edge was washed
away in a storm. His resting
place is now commemorated by
a simple wooden cross, though
Te Iringa’s gravesite is not
documented or marked.
In 1925 the eight remaining
men were moved to Makogai
Island in Samoa, joining 300
other sufferers and benefitting
from a greater sense of
community. Five of them were
never to leave, including the
original sole resident of Quail
Island, Will Vallane. He died on
Makogai in 1937 in his early 60s,
having spent over 30 years in
isolation.
The tragedy of the long human
history of leprosy is that it, in
fact, has low pathogenicity with
95 per cent of people exposed to
the bacterium not going on to
develop the condition.
Advances in Western medicine
in the 1940s mean that leprosy
is curable if diagnosed early and
treated with multidrug therapy.
Nevertheless, it is still a serious
disease in parts of the Americas,
Africa and the Western Pacific,
associated with poverty, lack of
access to medical intervention
and continuing misunderstanding.
With the wisdom of hindsight,
the Quail Island men could have
been saved from two difficult
decades of isolation.
Start dreaming of driving electric
BUILD YOUR Dreams –
abbreviated to BYD, that’s the
name for one of the newest
entrants into New Zealand’s
electric vehicle market.
More specifically, the BYD Atto
3 is the key model here for the
all-electric Chinese car building
company, and it’s a tidy, stylish
sport utility vehicle that already
I’m seeing in good numbers on
our roads. If you are wondering
where Atto comes from, it is
inspired by the Attosecond –
the smallest time scale unit in
physics – and according to BYD
it represents speed, energy and
dynamics.
The Atto 3 lands here in two
model variants distinguished by
their battery size. The extended
range vehicle incorporates the
larger of the lithium-ion battery
capacities – a 60kWh unit
– giving a 420km range and the
standard battery unit – 50kWh –
providing a range of 345km. Both
models are driven by a single
motor powering the front wheels,
there is 150kW of power on tap
with 310Nm of torque in both,
offering a standstill to 100km/h
time of 7.3sec.
Prices start at $55,490 for the
standard model, the extended
range variant adds $4500. Those
prices both easily qualify for the
full New Zealand Government
Clean Car Programme rebate of
$8625.
The Atto is a compact SUV,
it measures just 4.45m but the
designers have done a good job in
making the interior comfortable
and spacious considering. There’s
also good load space at 440-litres
which easily translates to a weekly
family supermarket shop.
Specification items are numerous,
I can report that for its price
there’s a good level of fitment. The
evaluation car was the range-topper,
but most of what is in that is
also included in the entry-level
model, it’s just the battery capacity
that is different and, the colour
choices vary from level to level.
For those of you who like to see
the stars when you’re travelling at
night, the Atto 3 gets a full length
panoramic roof, along with
heated and electric seats, keyless
entry and ignition, and electric
tailgate just to mention a few of
the major items. When you take
into account the value you get for
the money, it’s no wonder BYD
is showing much appeal in this
country.
The interior is very space age.
The design and trim elements are
styled with ideas that I’ve never
STYLE: The BYD Atto 3 is chock full of delightful surprises,
including novel guitar-type strings on the inside of each door.
BUILD YOUR DREAMS ATTO3: An electric vehicle that is becoming very popular downunder.
seen before in any car. I particularly
like the guitar strings that
are fitted to the front doors, you
can play music to the beat of the
radio while sitting at the ever-increasing
traffic light queues.
Another design I like are the
wheel-like door release mechanisms,
they are functional yet also
futuristic.
There is also much depth within
the display graphics and control
functions. The touch screen
dash panel sits centre console and
looks very much like an enlarged
iPad and works similarly, even
though it is comprehensive I
found it to be quite intuitive and
user-friendly.
Driving the Atto 3 requires little
familiarity, just select drive (or
reverse) on the selector and you
are moving just like you would in
any automatic car.
It is quiet, of course, and for
that reason it takes some time
to get used to the whirr and the
whine of the electronics instead
of hearing the sound that you
would normally get from an
internal combustion engine.
What’s more, it is quite quick, the
initial launch off the line provides
immediate acceleration and it
takes no time at all before the
legal speed limit is reached. The
high torque output is also handy
for the highway overtake, an 80
• Price – BYD Atto3, $59,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4455mm; width, 1875mm;
height, 1615mm
• Configuration – Electrosynchronous
motor,
front-wheel-drive, 150kW,
310Nm, one-speed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 7.3sec
to 120km/h overtaking time of
5.5sec means you are on the right
hand side of the road for minimal
time.
I only had the evaluation car
for three full days and that was
during a working week, so I
didn’t get to travel as far as I normally
would, but I did head west
towards Darfield and returned
home through the winding back
roads of Dunsandel, Burnham
and Lincoln.
It must be said the Atto 3 has
a sublime ride. It is soft in the
suspension offering huge levels
of comfort. Given that there is
little firming, it comes as some
surprise that it has neutral
handling characteristics. Sure,
there’s a lot of energy heading out
the front wheels, and on strong
accelerator request you do feel
a bit of tugging at the steering
wheel when exiting a tight corner,
but I’m pleased to say there is a
fully independent suspension
system and it is high class, having
the ability to provide that smooth
ride and predictable handling
manners.
I travelled 200km in the evaluation
vehicle, when I picked it
up there was 86 per cent charge
on the battery capacity display
offering a distance to empty of
400km. It panned out so that
plugging in for several hours
each night meant I could keep
the batteries well within a range
that minimised anxiety, although
at a short 4m the domestic cable
is only just long enough to reach
my garage plug.
Of course, fast charging at a
designated port will boost the
batteries from 20 to 80 per cent in
around 30min.
It’s quite clear the direction the
world is heading in terms of new
vehicle sales, electric vehicles
are in demand, but BYD in New
Zealand says supply is relatively
constant.
A good friend of mine who
lives in Australia has had a hefty
deposit on an Atto 3 for six
months and there’s still no sign of
his car arriving, but every market
