A night out in Wigan...
What could be more tempting a
few days before Christmas than a
night out in Wigan?
Not that there is anything particularly
wrong with Wigan, and let me make that
clear, but the Lancashire town and I have
met before - on many occasions.
In a previous life, I worked in finance
as a fully qualified advisor for a major
bank. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe
when I can barely switch a laptop on
without calling IT, but in those far off days
when you could still use a calculator
AND be allowed to count on your toes
as well, I was the merchant banker of
Handsworth.
They had this strange idea that, if they
sent you to Wigan on courses, you would
be so bored you would put extra effort to
pass your exams, so they didn’t have to
send you back again. Originally, they had
them in Manchester. I am told there are still
several missing from those days last seen

They even decided to put candidates
up in a hotel on the outskirts in an area
called Standish, and this ploy very nearly
