Considering the attractive
opposition, and United’s
still promising position in
the league table, the game
only attracted a crowd of
16,579. United struggled
to attract the type of gates
they hoped for with 14 out
of their 20 home games
attracting crowds of less
than 20,000.
The Blades won this
game 2-0 with striker Mick
Jones notching one in
each half to end United’s
poor run of results.
However, the win did not
spark another unbeaten
run as they only won one
of their next eight games
and ultimately ended the
season in a disappointing
ninth place after such a
promising start.
United did, however,
have the satisfaction of
completing the league
double over Everton
winning 3-1 at Goodison
Park on 9th April with
Jones again scoring a
double. He finished as
United’s leading scorer
with 21 league goals.
Everton did have the
satisfaction of winning the
FA Cup beating Sheffield
Wednesday 3-2 in the
final.
