DENZEL HAYES WASHINGTON, JR.was born on December 28, 1954,in Mount Vernon, New York. He isthe middle of three children of Lennis“Lynne”, a beauty parlour owner andoperator from Georgia, and a Pentecostalminister father, Denzel Washington,Sr., from Virginia.Denzel Washington attended Pennington-GrimesElementary School inMount Vernon. He first took the stagearound the age of seven, appearing ina talent show at a local Boys & GirlsClub. “A safe place keeping me outof trouble,” Washington, who was notallowed to watch movies by his parents,was later quoted. It was a rebelliousstage in his life, and several of hisfriends went to prison. At age 14, hisparents divorced and his mother, respondingto his behavioural problems,took him out of Elementary School andsent him and his older sister to the privatepreparatory school Oakland MilitaryAcademy in New Windsor, NewYork. Washington later said that it wasthis decision that had changed his life.“I wouldn’t have survived in the directionI was going. The guys I was hangingout with at the time, were nice guys,but the streets got them.”Washington then attended MainlandHigh School in Daytona Beach, Florida,from 1970 to 1971, before enrolling atFordham University, where he discoveredacting and earned a BA in Dramaand Journalism in 1977. He later won ascholarship to the American ConservatoryTheater in San Francisco, and afterwardsworked with the Shakespearein the Park ensemble.Shortly after graduating from FordhamUniversity, Denzel Washingtonmade his screen acting debut in the1977 made-for-television movie Wilmaand in 1981, he had his first Hollywoodappearance in the comedy A CarbonCopy. A number of off-Broadway productionsand television movies followed,but the actual breakthrough came whenhe starred as Dr. Phillip Chandler inNBC’s television hospital drama St.Elsewhere (1982-1988), where Washingtonwas one of only a few African-American actors to appear on the seriesfor its entire six-year run. Several television,motion picture and stage roles followed,such as A Soldier’s Story (1984),Hard Lessons (1986) and Power (1986).However, it was 1987 that should giveDenzel Washington attention when heplayed real-life South African apartheidmartyr Steve Biko, in Richard Attenborough’sCry Freedom, a role for whichhe received an Oscar nomination forBest Supporting Actor. Only two yearslater, in 1989, Washington won his firstAcademy Award for Best SupportingActor for his portrayal of a defiant, selfpossessedex-slave soldier in the filmGlory. He starred in two more moviesthat same year, The Mighty Quinn andFor Queen and Country.Having his name out and being recognizedfor his acting abilities, DenzelWashington had a busy schedule in the1990s, adding several notable films tohis portfolio, including Spike Lee collaborationslike the jazz outing Mo’ BetterBlues (1990) and biopic Malcolm X(1992), for which he received anothernomination for the Academy Awardfor Best Actor. That same year, he establishedhis own production company,Mundy Lane Entertainment. Otherprojects included the successful thrillerThe Pelican Brief (1993) alongside JuliaRoberts, and the role of the lawyer of agay man with AIDS, portrayed by TomHanks, in the 1993 film Philadelphia.In Crimson Tide (1995), directedby Tony Scott and produced by DonSimpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, DenzelWashington stars with Gene Hackman,while in 1996, in Courage UnderFire, he is seen opposite Meg Ryan. Thesame year, Washington appeared withWhitney Houston in the romantic comedyThe Preacher’s Wife. Another SpikeLee film, He Got Game, followed in1998, the same year that saw him starin the supernatural horror film, Fallen.Two more movies followed in 1999 - TheBone Collector alongside Angelina Jolie,and The Hurricane.At the 57th Golden Globe Awardsin 2000, Denzel Washington receivedhis second Oscar, this time for Best Actorin a Leading Role in The Hurricane.In 2001, an Academy Award for BestActor for the cop thriller Training Dayfollowed. The following year, he directedhis first film, the well-reviewedbiographical drama Antwone Fisher, inwhich he also co-starred.The next few years, Washington appearedin a series of thrillers that performedgenerally well at the box office,including Out of Time (2003), Manon Fire (2004), The Manchurian Candidate(2004), and Spike Lee’s InsideMan (2006), co-starring Jodie Fosterand Clive Owen. Deja Vu, a time travelmovie, was released the same year.Denzel Washington starred in twomovies in 2007. First, in Ridley Scott’sAmerican Gangster, followed by TheGreat Debaters (2007) with Forest“YOU PRAY FORRAIN, YOU GOTTADEAL WITH THEMUD, TOO. THAT’SA PART OF IT.”Whitaker, for which he once againstepped behind the camera. The decadeended with Tony Scott’s 2009 filmThe Taking of Pelham 123 (a remake ofthe 1974 thriller of the same name).Heading into 2010, Washingtonstarred in both his fifth and final collaborationwith director Tony Scott, TheBook of Eli, a post-apocalyptic actiondramaset in the near future, as well asin the action film Unstoppable, aboutan unmanned, half-mile-long runawayfreight train with dangerous cargo. His2012 performance in Flight, a movieabout an alcoholic airline pilot facinginvestigation for his part in a planecrash, then won him the nominationfor an Academy Award for Best Actor.Washington also co-starred in SafeHouse (2012), for which he got paid$20 million, preparing for his role bysubjecting himself to a torture sessionthat included waterboarding. Severalother movies followed, including 2 Guns(2013), alongside Mark Wahlberg, andThe Equalizer (2014), an action thrillerfilm directed by Antoine Fuqua. TheMagnificent Seven, a remake of the1960 western film of the same name, hittheaters in 2016, the same year he receivedthe Cecil B. DeMille Award fromthe Hollywood Foreign Press Associationat its annual Golden Globe telecast.Later that year, Washington directed thefilm Fences, co-starring Viola Davis andbased on August Wilson’s play.A praised performance for thelegal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq., ledto nominations for a Golden GlobeAward, a Screen Actors Guild Awardand an Academy Award, Washington’sninth Oscar nomination overall, andhis sixth for Best Actor.
