MANAGER’S NOTES
Bramall Lane has witnessed some
extremely special occasions
under the lights down the years
and we hope tonight can be another,
although we are under no illusions about
the size of the task that faces us as we
offer a warm welcome to Tottenham
Hotspur.
Everyone knows Spurs are in excellent
form and their multiple strengths, amongst
them being fantastic on the break and
able to score from all sorts of areas. We
know we are in for a very tough night, but
cup ties are different and if we are at our
best then we have a chance.
Being at our best requires a concerted
effort from everyone and that doesn’t
just include the players. I mentioned on
Saturday that I thought the fans were
fantastic and undoubtedly played a role
in picking up three big points against
Watford.
We started well and the supporters
were right behind us. I love that and the
opposition often comment about how we
are driven on from the stands.
I’m aware that there will be a good
attendance tonight and I understand that
we have to perform in a way to get the
crowd going. It will be difficult, but we
need the fans to have players’ backs and
then get on front foot when we can.
It won’t impact Spurs and their players
much, we appreciate that, but encouraging
noises from the home areas of the ground
creates a positive response on the pitch
for our lads, it is human nature. We like to
be aggressive, create energy and passion
and it is so important that we get the
backing from the fans to support the effort.
Saturday’s victory was very welcome,
taking into account the circumstances
leading up to the game, there was a lot of
noise after a couple of defeats. Watford
have one of the best attacking units in the
Championship, we changed our approach
slightly and it worked well to limit a
talented team to very few opportunities.
We kept going after a tight first half and
as the second half wore on, we had the
chances and wondered if it would drop for
us, as always, we work hard on set plays.
When we looked back at how and why
we won the game there was plenty to be
pleased about, we created more chances
than them as well as nullifying some big
threats.
Ultimately, in preparation and on the
day, we got everything right in terms of
executing how we wanted to set up. I’m
a fan of trying to step on to everyone but
Watford deserved the respect we showed
them because they still create moments.
Our approach and application was very
pleasing and we were rewarded with three
deserved points.
That result, as everyone knows, opened
the gap up again between ourselves and
third place. There will be many twists
and turns to come as we weave our way
to the end of the season, which includes
a difficult trip to Blackburn less than 72
hours after tonight’s game.
We know what we’re chasing and teams
are chasing us, but, as I’ve said previously,
we look to win every game – and that
includes cup fixtures.
TOMMY LOOKING
TO BUILD ON
RECENT STRIKE
Tommy Doyle has
set the target for
more big
contributions before the
end of the campaign after
his recent strike against
Millwall.
The Manchester City
loanee netted with a
superb free kick at The
Den to bring United level
in a topsy-turvy encounter
which eventually went the
way of the Lions.
But having just returned
from a recent injury setback,
Tommy was pleased to be
back on the score sheet
and has targeted more
big moments as United
approach the crucial final
stretch of another exciting
Championship campaign.
PLAYER FOCUS
He said: “It was nice
to score. I like to score
and assist and try and
contribute. I have said
before I can contribute a
lot more and hopefully,
I can keep doing that now
but ultimately, we lost the
game at Millwall. The goal
was nice, but it didn’t really
mean anything because we
didn’t win the game. I want
to contribute more and try
and help the team as much
as possible. Hopefully I can
keep adding numbers.
“The majority of my
contributions have been
assists; I should score a
lot more. A lot of my goals
do come from set plays
- deadball situations. I’ve
only had one so far but in
open play I’m looking to
contribute more in terms of
goals, and it is something
I am working on with the
manager, Jack (Lester)
and Stu (Stuart McCall) to
improve in that area.”
Turning his attention to
the Championship run in,
Tommy knows just how
competitive the division
is and isn’t expecting any
favours as United look to
claw their way towards
promotion.
But he does feel the
experienced former
promotion winners within
United’s ranks will be a
huge help as the season
moves into March.
He explained: “It helps
a lot (having promotion
winners in the side). Lads
like me have not been in
this situation before, so it
does always help to have
a lot of senior lads who
can help you in certain
situations on the training
pitch or in the game.
We have a good mix of
experience and people
who perhaps haven’t
played as many games,
so we’ll stick together and
keep going.”
UTB 07
RETURN TO DEFENSIVE SOLIDITY PLEASES JACK
Jack Robinson
expressed his
delight at United’s
recent return to defensive
solidity in the recent 1-0
success at home to
Watford.
After conceding six
goals in the previous
two outings in defeats
to Middlesbrough and
Millwall, United’s well
renowned defensive
fortitude took an
unexpected hit.
But the incredible
standards hit for the vast
majority of this season
were found again against
the Hornets, when
United kept out a potent
Watford frontline as Paul
Heckingbottom’s side
returned to winning ways.
Jack said: “It was a
tough game, but we played
well and dominated in
periods. We looked solid
throughout and we knew
if we kept a clean sheet
then we would nick a goal
and that’s exactly how we
prepared for the game.
We’re very happy with the
three points.
“It’s always nice to get
a clean sheet. Looking at
our last few games, we
have struggled a little,
we had a dip but that’s
going to happen at times
PLAYER FOCUS
▲ Jack Robinson helped United to a clean sheet in the victory over Watford
in the season - that’s
what happens in the
Championship. It is tough,
it’s relentless but we’ve
bounced back today and
I’m very happy.”
Asked whether internally
it felt like a pivotal game,
Jack added: “It was more
of, it was just another
Championship game for us.
We knew they were a good
team and in good form and
had very good players. As
long as we did our jobs, we
knew we could put on a
performance and get them
points.”
United’s attacking
approach has often
brought huge success
in a season where
Heckingbottom’s side have
consistently appeared
within the Championship’s
top two positions.
But Jack admitted
keeping clean sheets has
been just as important,
as the Blades recorded
a crucial shut-out to
maintain a position inside
the automatic promotion
places.
He concluded: “We
had a game plan, maybe
we’ve been a bit gung-ho
lately and it has cost us
on the break. We were
much more solid against
Watford, and the main
thing was to keep a clean
sheet and let the forwards
do their job and get us
a goal, and that’s what
happened.”
STANDARDS MUST REMAIN HIGH, SAYS ANEL
There’s no room
for any lowering of
standards, says
Anel Ahmedhodžić, if
United are to give Premier
League Tottenham a run
for their money in
the FA Cup.
After two uncharacteristic
performances defensively
by the team against
Middlesbrough and Millwall,
United were back to their
stoic best at the weekend
as Paul Heckingbottom’s
side defeated Watford at
Bramall Lane.
With Premier League
high flyers Spurs in town,
attack which boasts the
likes of Harry Kane and Son
Heung-min amongst others.
He said: “I see this as just
another big game for us
and I need to go out there
and do my best.
“Of course, the mistakes
you make will be even
more punishable because
of the quality of players
they have.
“The biggest difference
is that you have to stay
concentrated all of the time
because if you switch off for
one second, they will run,
shoot and score.
“If we can win this game,
of course it’ll give us a lot
of confidence but as I see
it, it is another game and
another chance to win a
game, and I love winning
games. It’s a big game
and a good chance to see
where we are at.”
With United edging a
close game with Watford
at the weekend, a packed
Bramall Lane was crucial in
helping Heckingbottom’s
side over the line.
Anel believes the Blades
supporters will be crucial
again if United are to
spring an FA Cup shock
and reach the sixth round
of the competition, and
whilst it was a good win at
the weekend, he continues
to look at the campaign
game-by-game.
He added: “The
atmosphere is a big thing.
The atmosphere against
Watford was really good
and it puts a lot of pressure
on the teams who come
here, and it makes the
game much better for us.
“We’re going well, and
it could become a great
season but if we look too
far forward it can all be
taken away. The most
important thing we can do
is just focus on the game
that’s coming, if we focus
on anything else, it won’t
be good. We’ll take it
game-by-game and when
it comes to the end of the
season, then we can look
back.”
LOOKING BACK WITH
CHRIS Chris Basham
BASHAM
Ever dependable, reliable, versatile,
consistent and vastly experienced, the list
could go on and on when you think of
words to describe arguably one of the most
popular members of Paul Heckingbottom’s
current squad.
So, it is perhaps no surprise at all that Chris
Basham was happy to recall his six previous
encounters against tonight’s visitors to S2.
From Jay McEveley’s handball at White Hart
Lane back in 2015, to Che Adams bagging a
two-minute brace in front of the Kop, fast forward
to 2019 and VAR denying John Lundstram, then
in 2020, Sander Berge’s first goal as a Blade.
Defeats in the 2020-21 campaign are perhaps less
memorable, but Bash has a typically unique take
on all of the action that has unfolded against Spurs
over the last eight years or so.
And looking ahead to this evening’s FA Cup
fifth-round tie, the 34-year-old feels it could prove
to be a welcome distraction from the pressure of
a promotion race, but knows only too well from
experience the size of the task the Blades will have
to overcome to reach the last-eight of the world’s
most famous cup competition.
Chris recalls: “I remember Nigel
Clough always turning up pretty
late to games, we got stuck in
traffic and ended up only getting
to the stadium about 45 minutes
before kick-off. That actually
took the edge off the nerves
for the boys because we were
massive underdogs. We had
some chances in the first half and
only lost to a penalty which came
from Jay McEveley handballing
at the back post. Jamie Murphy
had a couple of chances on the
break I think and Stefan Scougall
too. We played a back four, I was
often the centre-half in a two,
I really enjoyed that role. They
had some serious attacking
talent, but we always fancied
our chances of keeping the tie
alive going back to the Lane and
we managed to keep the likes
of Kane, Adebayor and Eriksen
pretty quiet. I remember they
threw Soldado on too chasing
a goal. Our fans travelled in
excellent numbers to White Hart
crowd, and they got right behind
us in that far corner.”
Only for Eriksen to spoil it! It was
a wet and windy night under the
Bramall Lane lights, I remember
it just felt right for us and we
sensed a shock before the game
and during the warm-up. There
was just something about the
Blades in cup competitions under
Cloughie. Eriksen’s first half free
kick was out of this world, but we
managed to stay in the tie and
kicking towards the Kop second
half, we knew they’d be sucking
the ball in the net. Che came off
the bench and scored twice in as
many minutes having only been
on the pitch for a while. We were
level and I always remember little
Louie Reed’s chance to score,
it was a half chance really, but
when the ball dropped to him,
I thought he was going to make a
real name for himself but it wasn’t
meant to be. Tottenham perhaps
felt a little bit vulnerable, but
Eriksen showed his class again
late on to nick the tie in their
favour and he was the difference
between the two sides. We had a
good side on paper, at times we
struggled for that consistency,
but in a one-off game we always
had a chance and nothing to lose
against one of the big Premier
an incredible place to walk out
at and I think we relished the
challenge that day. We were in
good form, and they were too,
we were still the underdogs, but
we’d enjoyed a good start and
were causing teams problems
with the formation and style
Chris Wilder played. We scored
one of the best goals we’ve ever
scored in recent times through
John Lundstram, and it was
the first time VAR really denied
us from what I can remember,
Lunny was a toenail offside!
We’d gone behind to a goal
from Son, but we never gave
up, we fancied ourselves, the
manager had us fired up and we
managed to get a late equaliser
through a mishit from George
(Baldock)! People thought I’d
scored initially but it was his, me
and George always seemed to
play well against Spurs during
that period and we certainly
deserved a draw at the very
least, we could have perhaps
won it towards the end through
Didzy (McGoldrick). We were
riding the crest of a wave in the
Premier League at this time,
people had already written us
off, but we were proving people
Chris recalls: “Harry Kane missed
a chance early on I think, and
he had one disallowed by VAR,
Jose Mourinho wasn’t happy
I remember that! My assist for
Sander’s first United goal was
my first in the Premier League,
having combined with George
before cutting it back and seeing
Sander fire it home. It was a night
Harry Kane’s shirt too. We’d won
3-1, I was buzzing I thought there
was no harm in asking him in the
give it me. The only thing that has
always upset me when thinking
back to this game and the wins
over Chelsea and Wolves too
around this time is thinking what
we would have been like with
fans in the stadium because we
were on a real roll at the time,
as we were before lockdown. It
would have been great to have
won some of those games in
front of packed out houses, it was
a fantastic Spurs side when you
look at the players on show, but a
European spot was very much in
our sights at this time. We pushed
ourselves and it was a fantastic
challenge to be part of, for a long
time it looked as if it was going
to happen, but that season is
one I’ll never forget because it
is packed with some wonderful
moments and results, against all
the odds really. We worked so
hard to get to the Premier League
and I just felt sorry for the fans
weren’t behind us unfortunately
Premier League
BLADES 1
(McGoldrick 59)
TOTTENHAM 3
(Aurier 5, Kane 40, Ndombele 62)
Blades: Ramsdale, Stevens Fleck,
Basham (Sharp 74), Lundstram,
Egan, Burke (Brewster 71),
Norwood (Bryan 67), McGoldrick,
Bogle, Ampadu. Unused:
Foderingham, Baldock, Lowe,
Jagielka.
Chris recalls: “Before this game
and the corresponding fixture,
we’ve always been in the game
and pushed them all the way.
I honestly remember very little
about this one, although I seem
to think their third goal was a
fantastic individual effort, that
was one of the best goals I’ve
seen from a visiting player at
Bramall Lane. This type of game
was the story of our relegation
season really, when the likes of
Spurs ‘turn up’ it proves difficult,
we couldn’t buy a win really and
with no crowd to cheer us on
it was a real slog when you fell
behind. The struggle by this point
was real, we’d only just won our
first game of the season a few
days before and although we
won a few in quick succession,
including at Old Trafford, we were
rock bottom and chasing every
game. Having said that, we’ve
always fancied ourselves against
Tottenham in my time here for
some reason.”
Premier League
TOTTENHAM 4
(Bale 36, 61, 69, Son 77)
BLADES 0
(–)
Blades: Ramsdale, Baldock,
Stevens, Fleck, Basham, Egan,
Norwood, McGoldrick (Mousset
83), Bogle (Berge 45), Osborn,
Brewster (Burke 45). Unused:
Foderingham, Lundstram, Lowe,
Jagielka, J. Robinson, Gordon.
Chris recalls: “This was my
first game back after six or
seven weeks out I remember,
Having looked back, reflected and
reminisced, Chris is understandably
looking forward to facing the class of 2023
in tonight’s fascinating fifth-round clash at
Bramall Lane.
He concluded: “We’re looking forward
to the tie, it is a one-off game, and it is
an opportunity for those selected to test
themselves against some of the elite
players of the Premier League. It’ll be a
packed house I would imagine, both sets
of supporters will want to see their team
progress to the next round. They will
want to win the competition and have a
good chance I would say, but there is an
excitement for us post Watford, which was
a massive win. There will be chances for
players to grasp, it is great game for us to
get stuck into and at home we believe we
can beat anyone on the night. It is brilliant
the tie will be settled on the night, arguably
it would hopefully give us an edge if we can
stay in the game with the fans right behind
us like they were at the weekend.”
I played left-sided centre-half
and unfortunately for us Gareth
Bale turned up in his prime,
he was absolutely unplayable
and scored a hat-trick. It was a
long afternoon for us all, but for
me personally I was struggling
towards the end and Son has
cut inside me and put one in
the top corner. It wasn’t a nice
experience, but Hecky had taken
over by this point and was doing
a wonderful job in lifting the lads
and trying to instill that belief
in such testing circumstances.
We won a few games after this
against Everton and Palace, so
we finished pretty strongly, but
relegation had been on the cards
for much of the season and it
hurt. We were still on the biggest
stage though, there was a lot of
speculation about Bale at the
time, he was on-loan from Real
Madrid and hadn’t played much,
but typically he was on fire in this
game and he still had that turn
of pace. I remember him going
through and I was just fading
away chasing him. It was so
hard playing against the likes of
Gareth, Harry Kane, Son, others
too when we’d been on the back
foot all season having worked so
hard for the opportunity to be in
the Premier League.”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
United took the derby day
honours with a single goal victory
over Sheffield Wednesday at
Bramall Lane thanks to Louie Marsh’s 15th
league goal of the season.
John Fleck and Ciaran Clark returned
to action while there were also starts for
Adam Davies and Ismaila Coulibaly as
United named a strong side.
After a relatively slow start, the visitors
went closest when Davies did well to push
away a powerful header at the expense
of a corner, before the game swung in
United’s favour as Adam Adetoro was
shown a second yellow for a foul on
Antwoine Hackford, giving the home side a
numerical advantage.
And having cranked up the pressure
in the second period, the breakthrough
came with just over 20 minutes remaining
as Fleck’s cross was met by the head of
Marsh, who headed home into the corner
to ensure a league double over the Owls.
TEAM (vs Sheffield Wednesday): Davies, Sachdev
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United fell to defeat at Shirecliffe
against Crewe Alexandra as a first
half strike from distance proved
to be the difference on an off day for the
young Blades.
After Mekhi Haughton-Parris went close
with a half volley which went over the bar,
Crewe hit United on the counter with a
strike from outside the box on 20 minutes.
The Blades pushed numbers forward
after the break chasing a goal, but despite
some late pressure they couldn’t restore
parity.
Lead coach Paul Quinn remarked: “We
were disappointed with the first 30
minutes of the game in terms of the
intensity we played at with and without
the ball. Second half we were dominant
but lacked the final detail, we gave Crewe
something to hang on to and credit to
them they defended their box well.”
New United Women boss
Jonathan Morgan slipped to a
narrow defeat in his first game at
the helm after a 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace.
The Blades made a bright start and had
numerous chances in the first half with
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk seeing a goal
disallowed for offside, before Bex Rayner
and Rhema Lord-Mears were denied by
ex-Blade Fran Kitching.
Sub Georgia Walters also tested
Kitching, whilst Sweetman-Kirk saw
another effort curl just past the post as
United had the better of the first 45.
Palace hit back after the break and took
the lead through Hollie Olding. United
restored parity soon after when Rayner
fired in an equaliser off the underside of
the bar. But with United seeking a winner,
Palace struck late on when Coral-Jade
Haines slotted home after United were
caught down the right.
A QUALITY PLAYER
REMEMBERS
A QUALITY
COMMENTATOR
“A quality goal, from a quality player...”
The late John Motson’s supremely
gifted line of commentary perfectly
encapsulated arguably the most iconic
goal in Sheffield United history.
“What about that?” stated Motson, as
Tony Currie glided across the Bramall
Lane turf before beating West Ham’s
Mervyn Day, followed by the broadcaster’s
now legendary description of Currie’s
majestic solo effort.
Following the sad news of Motson’s
passing last week, the goal has resurfaced
as a tribute to the great man, who enjoyed
an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC.
‘Motty’ covered 10 World Cups, 10
European Championships and 29 FA Cup
finals for BBC Sport before hanging up his
famous sheepskin coat in 2018.
But from a United perspective the
standout Motson memory will always be
his perfect description of Currie’s magic
against the Hammers back in 1975.
“It’s amazing that something seemingly
off the cuff can still resonate all these
years later,” said Currie as he recalled
many meetings with Motson when the
goal was discussed.
“It has been shown and the words used
thousands of times over the years. It
wasn’t just my goal, he had so many iconic
pieces of commentary for so many other
moments in the game. It was a goal I was
always proud of, but his words put it on
another level which was really nice.
“I was sad when I heard the news, he
was just a really nice bloke – a real gent of
the game.”
▲ John Motson sadly passed away last week aged 77
UTB 29
▲ TC and that goal with Motson positioned in the makeshift gantry as the new South Stand starts to take shape
Motson’s links to the Steel City go back
before he became the nation’s number
one football commentator. He enjoyed a
stint at the Sheffield Morning Telegraph
and also worked as a freelancer for BBC
Radio Sheffield.
Inevitably, with the shared Sheffield
links, Currie and Motson’s path often
crossed, and the goal was always a
conversation starter, as TC explained:
“I met him a few times over the years at
dinners and award nights. We spoke about
the goal when I met him in Hertfordshire
once and a few years ago he was given
a lifetime achievement award by the
▲ Glyn Hodges and his magic left peg against Manchester United
Sheffield Star, and we had a good chat
about it again. Whenever I met him,
inevitably that piece of commentary
always came up.
“He was always good company, a
proper gent to be honest. It’s a sad loss
and it’ll be strange knowing he’s not
around anymore.”
MOTSON, THE
FA CUP AND THE
BLADES
As it’s the FA Cup Fifth Round, it’s worth
recalling some more famous Motson
commentary on the Blades from February
14th 1993.
The Blades defeated Manchester United
at Bramall Lane 2-1 despite trailing to a
Ryan Giggs strike. Jamie Hoyland levelled
before Glyn Hodges netted what would
prove to be the winner.
“Back in again by Hoyland. Gayle gets
up again, Hodges is there!”
The words of Motson, before he
trotted out another wonderful line of
commentary.
“This man’s left foot is magic!”
He wasn’t wrong as United won the
tie on the way to an eventual semi-final
against Wednesday at Wembley.
John Garrett’s
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
The Greatest...
The passing of Pele over the
Christmas period of 2022 was a
sad blow for the beautiful game.
It’s amazing a player who hung his
boots up so long ago could still have such
a profound effect on the feelings and
emotions of fans in the modern era, a good
many of whom would never have had the
chance to have actually seen him play.
He stood for all that the game should be,
and that counts for everything. A humble
man with a huge reputation who used his
life across the globe to pass on the word
in every corner he reached, and that, my
friends, is some legacy. An icon and then
some.
Sheffield always feels like it has had a
certain connection with the great man.
Generations have been weaned on the
stories of him appearing for his beloved
Santos, not once but twice, in the Steel
City. Santos played here in ‘72 during the
dreaded power cuts and on a weekday
▲ Pele on the pitch at Bramall Lane in 2007
afternoon, and it’s famed that there were
a fair few absentees from school and
indeed work on that day, but if you believe
all who say they were present to watch
the maestro in action, then the population
of South Yorkshire had all crammed into
Hillsborough on that day. In fairness, if
you see any images of the Kop in its state
▲ The great man meets the media as part of his visit
without the roof, its packed. The crowd in
total was given as 37,000 and just a few
days later, a home game against Watford
saw roughly half that number through the
turnstiles, such was the pull of seeing the
legend in action.
Tommy Craig, a player I had an irrational
liking for as a kid (and Blade) famously
spent the last 10 minutes of the match
following Pele around to get his shirt, and
fair play to him, so would anyone! February
23rd that year in Sheffield is the stuff of
local legend, that’s for sure.
I must say that one of my fondest
memories out of many over my years here
was playing a part in his visit 35 years later
to celebrate the 125th Birthday of Sheffield
FC.
Even now, it seems a surreal event to say
the least. Our then owner’s relationship
with the chair of Sao Paulo and his business
connections brought forward the chance
to have football’s greatest ambassador
here as the star guest that would culminate
with a special friendly at Bramall Lane
against Inter Milan with Pele as the guest
of honour for the match. Even knowing it
was happening, and the lead up to the visit,
didn’t really prepare you for what was going
to happen, and when he landed at our
famous home the pace started and never
slowed for the time that he was here.
Senior staff were called together outside
to welcome him out on to the pitch in
the midst of the press frenzy that was in
progress, and all were introduced and their
hands warmly shook by the man himself.
I saw loads of pictures over the days after
his passing of TC with him out on the pitch
with the customary Blades scarf around his
neck and the ball balanced between their
heads. You know what? Must have been a
hell of a kick for Tony as Pele knew exactly
who he was without any prompting at all.
As great a player as TC was for us, still
knowing that the greatest knew your name
is something that you could never get tired
of telling, could you?
Other Blades greats such as Deano,
Tony Agana, Mick Jones, Colin Colindridge,
Badge and Ted were assembled in the
boardroom for a full on red and white
welcome and, once again, there were
plenty of photographs to mark the event.
Being Sheffield United FC, we had a
host of events to mark his visit and also,
I suspect, to try and claw back a little bit of
whatever it took to get him over here.
We had:
— An Evening with Pele
— An Afternoon with Pele
— An Audience with Pele
— Table Tennis with Pele
— Stamp Collecting with Pele
A couple of them may be a bit of a lie, but it
would be fair to say that he was at Bramall
Lane more than me that week. One of my
favourite photos of my kids is the one of
my eldest, Liam, who was in charge of the
mascots back then. He was helping out for
the game and was quite literally scooped
into Legends of the Lane by Kevin McCabe
to be right next to the man himself as he
unveiled the Sheffield FC cabinet in person.
I put together a little book on the week
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

UTB 37
later on, and the picture sits proudly within
his pages. As Liam once said: “That’s the
greatest footballer in the world with Pele!”
Mmmm…
On his first evening, and for a select few,
there was an intimate dinner with him, and a
champagne reception for the fortunate few.
We had been inundated with requests for
signed items and it seemed that people at
the club couldn’t say no. There were bags
of the stuff, I am telling you. Just chancing
an arm, I had laid out in the museum on a
table my Escape to Victory shirt and tracky
top with a pen (as you do). I had the job of
taking the floor and saying:
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome
to Bramall Lane the greatest footballer the
world has ever known…”
Funnily enough, Liam Garrett didn’t enter
Legends, it was, of course, Pele who duly
walked across the floor, picked up the
Sharpie and signed my stuff. Result!
By the end of the week though, he had
pretty much had enough. On the last but
one day, we had the fabled ‘An Afternoon
with Pele’ - a packed Platinum Suite with
a three course and licensed bar with an
interview with the great man hosted by
either our own Andy Pack or the late Harry
Gratian. I can’t recall who was supposed
to do it, but it nearly didn’t matter as with
minutes to go before the start of the fun, we
were told that our guest was ill and that he
wouldn’t be able to attend. A room full of
Sheffield’s finest getting steadily refreshed
and having paid for an afternoon of frivolity
and entertainment were certainly not going
to be fobbed off, and we had a problem.
Our then commercial manager Andy Daykin
was at the hotel trying to smooth things
over and persuade Pele to get in the car
and head for S2 whilst keeping in touch
with the poor souls who were on the verge
of being lynched at the Lane.
I reckon he had gone down with
something, probably down to the excessive
list of events he had agreed to during his
stay. He was just shattered. The bar was
doing a roaring trade. Great for turnover
but poor for those left to keep them sweet.
John Garrett singing the great American
Songbook with Tony Currie wasn’t going to
get anyone out in one piece! I told all that
he hadn’t been well in the night and that
the club doc was with him - nowt serious,
just an upset tummy, and that seemed to
keep the natives from rebelling, at least for
the time being!
Finally, and at pushing a fashionable
two hours late, we got the nod to say
that he was en route. Those that were in
the museum for the intimate champagne
reception had drunk all the champagne and
were either asleep in a corner or joining in
with the rousing renditions of unprintable
Blades terrace tunes that were being
bellowed out next door. The car pulled up
outside and Pele was taken straight into the
museum in readiness for his introductions
by yours truly. I shook his hand, and he
gave me a weary smile, then entered the
room to an incredible ovation, made his
way to the head table and took his seat.
UTB 39
A lad was weaving his way back to where
his mates were sitting, expertly cradling
an arm full of Guinness and not a drop
was being spilled. As he passed the three
times World Cup winner, he leaned over
and uttered the immortal words “Alreet
Pele mate?” A genuine enquiry as to his
health that would have been much more
appreciated had he not tipped most of
the Guinness over our guest. Pele was up
and off back to his hotel. I reckon it was
less than 10 minutes, and some say that
Guinness is good for you…
Joking aside, that week was
unforgettable. I was lucky to be in his
presence on many occasions and to have
the opportunity to chat to him. I mean,
what dos a lad from Hackenthorpe say
to someone like that for crying out loud?
Just to be in the same room as him was
enough, but he had the art of making you
feel like you were actually, well, interesting.
We talked about Sheffield ref George
McCabe and the game he officiated over
at Goodison between Brazil and Portugal.
He remembered everything about him,
including the fact that he had taken the ‘69
Cup Final, and that was incredible. Some
man and some human.
To end, I saw a lovely post on
Facebook from an old school friend
called Anya Marson. Anya’s family have,
for generations, been WJ Hoyland
Undertakers on Mansfield Road at Intake
and it was a story about her multi linguistic
grandfather, Ralph, who sadly passed
away back in the ‘90s. He was self-taught
and had loads of high-profile jobs. Sir
Matt Busby had begged him at the 11th
hour to stand in for Manchester United as
interpreter for that fatal Munich trip, and
it was a fear of flying that thankfully saw
him decline. Ralph was recruited to help
when Santos visited Hillsborough in ‘72
and had the pleasure of meeting Pele.
Being a hospitable Sheffielder, he invited
him back to the family home for some tea,
an offer that Pele had to decline due to
previous commitments. The following day,
when meeting with him again, Ralph gave
him a small piece of stone from his home,
and told him: “You were unable to visit my
home, so I have brought a piece of my
home to you.”
Reading that brought a tear to my eye.
Such a simple and very Sheffield gesture,
but one that struck a chord as years
later, Pele mentioned the incident in his
autobiography and spoke fondly of having
it in his display cabinet at home. Such a life
and career, and yet he recalled Ralph and
his stone, George and his refereeing and
so much more, well, normal stuff.
I am really glad he had something
that meant something from Sheffield
in his trophy cabinet and that he didn’t
just think of being soaked in Guinness.
Seems he touched the lives of those he
met, and those that he didn’t. A rare and
irreplaceable talent, and a fine and decent
human being. God bless.
WHAT’S THE
STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW features a
Blades related photograph from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
United began the
1965-66 season in
the old First
Division with a young
squad and one that
included winger Gil Reece,
their first new signing
since the 1960-61 season.
This was also the first
season that teams could
use a substitute for injured
players. In the course of
the season midfielder Tony
Wagstaff made United
history by becoming the
club’s first substitute to
appear in a league game.
As in the previous three
seasons, the Blades
started the season well and
by early October were top
of the table.
There were a number
of impressive results in
the team’s strong start
to the season including
a 1-0 win at Liverpool, a
2-2 draw at Leeds United
and 1-0 home win against
local rivals Sheffield
Wednesday. However,
three consecutive defeats
between 23rd October
and 6th November halted
the team’s progress. The
last of those three defeats
had seen United feature
away at Arsenal on BBC
TV’s Match of the Day
programme. It wasn’t a
memorable appearance as
the Blades lost 6-2!
The week after that
humbling defeat to the
Gunners, Saturday 13th
November 1965, United
faced Everton at home.
Today’s action photograph
was taken during that
game. It shows United’s
local born defender Reg
Matthewson challenging
Everton goalkeeper Andy
Rankin for the ball.
In close attendance
trying to protect his ‘keeper
is Everton’s Brian Harris.
Reg had a solid career
with the Blades making
149 league appearances
before later playing for
Fulham and Chester.
In the background to the
action stands the old John
Street Stand and terrace.
On the opposite side of
the ground to the John
Street Stand, Bramall Lane
was still a three-sided
structure as Yorkshire
County Cricket club used
the stadium in the summer.
Considering the
attractive opposition, and
United’s still promising
position in the league
table, the game only
attracted a crowd of
16,579. United struggled
to attract the type of gates
they hoped for with 14 out
of their 20 home games
attracting crowds of less
than 20,000.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

UTB 41
The Blades won this
game 2-0 with striker Mick
Jones notching one in each
half to end United’s poor
run of results. However, the
win did not spark another
unbeaten run as they only
won one of their next eight
games and ultimately
ended the season in a
disappointing ninth place
after such a promising start.
United did, however,
have the satisfaction of
completing the league
double over Everton
winning 3-1 at Goodison
Park on 9th April with
Jones again scoring a
double. He finished as
United’s leading scorer
with 21 league goals.
Everton did have the
satisfaction of winning the
FA Cup beating Sheffield
Wednesday 3-2 in the
final.
Blades Tales
Former Sheffield Morning Telegraph
reporter JONATHAN LANG takes
a look back on previous encounters
between United and Spurs, whilst also
enlightens UTB with his personal past
experiences of covering both teams...
ABOUT JONATHAN
Now 76, I spent
four decades as a
sportswriter for
four papers and became a
lifelong pal of the late
‘Motty’, who was also
ex-Sheffield Morning
Telegraph.
I’ve spent 60 years a
Bee, as a fan of hometown
club Barnet FC and half that
as a Blade. My grandson
Arturo and granddaughter
Sandia (who plays for
SUFC’s Community
U12s) are now the next
generation of Blades.
For now, I share most of
my attendance at matches
between Barnet, Blades
and nearby Sheffield
FC (going back to Dave
McCarthy’s days).
Needless to say, though,
I was in the Kop for the
Premier League debut
match when Brian Deane
wrote his name into the
history books with the very
first in the competition for
United against Manchester
United.
BLADES vs SPURS
– AN FA CUP
BACKGROUND
This night match at
Bramall Lane will be the
fifth FA Cup tie between
the two clubs and the 95th
in all competitions with
29 wins, 27 draws and 38
defeats for United.
The first was the FA
Cup final of 1900-01, a 2-2
draw between the two
clubs in front of an officially
reported crowd of 110,820
(one source said 114,815)
at Crystal Palace on April
20th 1901. Fred Priest put
Blades ahead (11mins),
Sandy Brown 1-1 (23mins),
Brown 2-1 (50mins) and
Walter Bennett 2-2 (51mins).
The replay a week later at
Bolton Wanderers’ Burnden
Park saw a crowd of
20,470. Priest again scored
first for Blades (40min)
John Cameron 1-1 (52min),
Tom Smith 2-1 (76 min) and
Brown 3-1 (87 min).
This victory made Spurs,
then in the Southern
League, the only nonleague
club to win the
FA Cup.
It was the first of their
eight triumphs (Blades
have four) and launched
the London club’s rightfully
famous claim if there is a
one in the year Spurs win
the FA Cup (1921, 1961, 1981,
1991). And they are one of
three clubs to retain it.
A year after Tottenham’s
historic first United
lifted the trophy (for a
second time) on their
return to Crystal Palace
when they beat another
Southern League club –
Southampton – in 1902.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

UTB 45
Again, the final went to a
replay – it was 1-1 on April
19th (Alf Common scoring
first for United in front of
a crowd of 74,479) and
goals from George Hedley
and Billy Barnes won it
2-1 a week later in front of
33,068 fans.
The other two FA Cup
ties between Blades and
Tottenham Hotspur ended
as follows...
29th February 1936:
BLADES 3-1 SPURS
– en route to losing 1-0
to Arsenal in our last
appearance in the final (at
Wembley on April 25th,
attendance 93,384). Our
scorers were Jock Dodds
(2) and Bobby Barclay.
25th January 1958:
SPURS 0-3 BLADES –
our scorers were Derek
Pace, Billy Russell and
Derek Hawksworth.
was Sheffield United vs
Tottenham Hotspur, where
a crowd of 20,176 turned
out on May 2nd 1973 for the
last Football League match
before our famous ground
was changed forever.
Blades won that one 3-2
with an own goal and a
couple for Billy Dearden to
clinch a final place of 14th
in the First Division table.
United’s team that
day: McAlister, Badger,
Hemsley, Mackenzie,
Colquhoun, Woodward,
Scullion, Salmons,
Dearden, Currie, Bone.
Featured in the
programme is a farewell
Howard, a picture of Ted
Hemsley (a neighbour
late full back partner Len
Badger and TC once lived)
Anyone else here tonight
who was at White Hart
Ipswich Town 5-0 on
Boxing Day when snow
fell to launch the big
freeze of 1963? The
season which ended
▲⊲ Front and inside of the programme from 1975 where
Jonathan was asked to write something
Weeks later – as the
paper’s cricket writer –
under the gaze of sports
editor Keith Farnsworth
– I covered Sheffield
United CC’s final Yorkshire
League match and then,
on August 7th, the curtain
came down on Yorkshire’s
time at Bramall Lane as
they drew with Lancashire
in the last of 339 County
Championship matches on
our hallowed turf.
And the bulldozers
moved in as the cricketers
moved to Abbeydale Park.
Confession time and one
for older fans, on my way to
Bramall Lane for our recent
3-0 victory over Swansea,
church pal Richard
Armstrong, one among
those in the stand where
once the pavilion stood,
reminded me of something
I had not taken into account
when I told him of my
recollections offered for
publication tonight.
He recalled instantly that
it was against Spurs that
the then teenage Tony
Currie made a scoring
debut for United (a header)
under the floodlights on
February 26th 1968 in a
thriller which his new club
won 3-2.
His opener, incidentally,
was cancelled out by
Jimmy Greaves, who
recently lost his Tottenham
record scorer title to
Harry Kane.
Again the now
established ‘TC’ was the
central figure weeks into
the 1973-74 season when
I was back on duty at
Bramall Lane on the night
– September 4th 1973
I was allowed to write a
piece in the programme –
subject (appropriately for
tonight) The FA Cup – just
one of many defeats (2-1
with a rare David Bradford
goal for the hosts) in our
relegation season.
Years later – I was
allowed to write four
pieces in the programme
for the FA Cup tie at
Bramall Lane which for
me was fantasy becoming
reality when my No1
football love Barnet
FC, came calling in the
FA Cup.
Unlike the following two
National League clubs
(AFC Fylde and Wrexham)
we came away with our
famous 1-0 third round win
on December 6th 2019
secured by a penalty that
earned us £135,000. It’s
another £90,000 for the
winners of this tie.
The scorer was onetime
Spurs academy
player Shaq Coulthirst,
whose time on the books
at White Hart Lane was
similar to that of lan
Hendon, a previous
player and manager of my
hometown club.
At the other end of the
career ladder, after his
United contract was not
renewed, Jamal Campbell-
Ryce joined Barnet in
2016, having played a key
part in Blades’ run to the
last four of the League
Cup eight years ago.
Needless to say, it was
Tottenham who dashed
our hopes of going to
Wembley with a late goal
that earned a 2-2 draw
here on January 28th
2015 to win the tie 3-2 on
aggregate in front of a
crowd of 30,256.
Some years earlier – as
certain Blades would
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
SHEFFIELD UNITED 3-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
SATURDAY 29th FEBRUARY 1936
Heavy snow
contributed to a
low attendance of
22,295 spectators as
Second Division United
took on Tottenham, also in
the second tier, in
the FA Cup.
This quarter-final
encounter saw United beat
their London counterparts
3-1, but the Blades would
eventually fall to Spurs’
North London rivals,
Arsenal, 1-0 in the final.
The weather conditions
may have been a driving
factor in a low turnout.
68,287 had packed
into Bramall Lane in the
previous round against
Leeds United. Snow,
which had turned to sleet
made the pitch difficult
and, perhaps, this would
not have been played in
today’s modern game.
United turned in a strong
performance from the off
which Spurs simply failed
to contend with. Spurs did
frustrate the Blades during
the opening quarter, but
United took the lead on
31 minutes following good
work down the left by Jack
Pickering which resulted
in Bobby Barclay giving
the hosts the advantage.
Tottenham were prevented
from equalising moments
later, as United defender
Tom Johnson did
enough to keep George
Hunt at bay.
Tottenham started
the second half well
with both Hunt and Hall
keeping Jack Smith
busy in the Blades’ goal.
After weathering the
storm, the hosts doubled
the advantage. After
collecting a pass from
Eddie Boot on the edge
of the area, Jock Dodds
steadied himself before
beating Allan Taylor.
Dodds then added his
second of the match and
put the game beyond
Spurs when good play
drew Arthur Rowe and Bill
Whitley to the right as he
shot past an unsighted
Taylor. The visitors did
not abandon all hope of
salvaging something from
this tie. With moments
remaining Johnny Morrison
scored from close-range
to earn a consolation
for Spurs.
United went on to beat
Fulham 1-0 at Molineux
before losing to Arsenal in
the final.
2009
United won this crucial
promotion showdown
against Birmingham City late on as Kevin
Blackwell’s side moved fifth, just six
points behind Blues in the table. Danny
Webber had given United the lead
before a Chris Morgan own goal levelled
matters. With seven minutes remaining
Radhi Jaidi was controversially adjudged
to have pushed Craig Beattie in the area,
with David Cotterill netting from the spot.
United continued an
2014 impressive run of wins as a
Stefan Scougall first half goal is enough
to win 1-0 at MK Dons. After being
in relegation trouble for much of the
season, this result was part of a string of
wins which shot Nigel Clough’s side into
mid-table. This was Scougall’s second
goal since moving to United from
Livingston earlier in the campaign.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
An impressive win for midtable
United who defeated
1975
Bobby Robson’s title challengers Ipswich
Town 1-0 at Portman Road. Ipswich
were just two points from the summit
prior to the game, but United triumphed
thanks to a Alan Woodward goal. United
ended this First Division season strongly,
finishing sixth, two points behind third
placed Ipswich.
2005
MARCH
United are denied an FA Cup
shock after losing this clash
against Arsenal on penalties. After a 1-1
draw at Highbury, the Blades came close
to winning the replay in normal time
when Jon Harley was denied by Manuel
Almunia. With the game level after extra
time, Almunia saved spot kicks from Alan
Quinn and Harley to take the Gunners
through to round six.
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Bill Dearden...
Oldham-born centre forward Bill
Dearden began his Football
League career with his hometown
club, Oldham Athletic, making his debut
in September 1964.
He was also tried out as a winger as he
tried to establish himself as a first team
regular. Moves to Crewe Alexandra and
Chester City followed before he was
signed by Blades boss John Harris in April
1970 for a bargain £10K fee.
His career blossomed at the Lane
playing at centre forward. His pace,
bravery and finishing skills soon won him
the support of United fans. He scored
some vital goals in his first season,
1970/71, to help the club win promotion to
the top flight. Bill flourished further in the
top flight scoring 20 league goals in the
1972/73 season to finish as United’s top
scorer. Amongst his other highlights was
a hat-trick at home to West Ham United in
February 1972.
▲ Managing Mansfield in 2007
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

UTB 53
▲ In the dugout for Notts County in a clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2003
When he left United in February 1976, he
re-joined former club, Chester, initially on
loan before later signing for Chesterfield in
August 1977. He retired from playing at the
end of the 1979/80 season and became
a coach at Chesterfield within their youth
set up.
Bill moved to local rivals Mansfield Town
in 1983 initially as first team coach but was
later appointed assistant manager and
then had a spell as caretaker manager.
Whilst he was involved with the Stags they
won the Football League Trophy in 1987
beating Bristol City in the final.
His next move was to join Port Vale in
July 1994 as assistant manager to Vale’s
long serving and successful boss, John
Rudge. When Rudge eventually left the
club, Bill had a very brief spell as caretaker
manager.
A return to Mansfield Town in June 1999
followed his stint with Vale to take up his
first post as actual manager. One of his
strengths was promoting young players to
the first team which included future Blades
midfielder Lee Williamson.
With Town going well in the old Third
Division (now League Two) in January
2002, Bill accepted the challenge of
managing Second Division (now League
One) Notts County. Bill had to work under
very difficult circumstances at County due
to their financial problems and a spell in
administration. In March 2002 he was
named Second Division Manager of the
Month and succeeded against the odds in
helping County avoid relegation. However,
the ongoing financial issues at Meadow
Lane continued with Bill unable to make
any permanent signings which saw the
team continue to struggle and he left the
club by mutual consent in January 2004.
He then had spells involving scouting,
coaching and being assistant manager
at Blackpool and MK Dons between
September 2005 and June 2006. A return
to management did follow when former
club Mansfield Town appointed him in
December 2006. However, this stint
saw the club battling to save its Football
League status and in March 2008 he left
the club to be replaced by another former
Blade, Paul Holland. Sadly, for Bill and Paul
the Stags failed in their fight to remain in
the Football League.
In the event, this final spell at Field
Mill was Bill’s last as manager. He
subsequently accepted the role as chief
scout at Blackpool in July 2008 before
he re-joined the Blades in the summer of
2011 to head up manager Danny Wilson’s
scouting team.
A WHOLE NEW
BALL GAME
This year marks the 30th anniversary of
the inaugural Premier League season.
To mark this milestone, UTB delves
into our programme archive to reminisce
about United’s part in this historic
campaign, whilst also talking to those
who were there at the start of what
has since grown into the
most talked about domestic
competition on the planet.
As well as looking back on
United’s campaign, we tell the
full story of the 1992-93 season
and also test your knowledge
about how much you remember
three decades on. So, wind the
clock back 30 years to relive this
special season throughout each
edition of UTB.
This time though, we take a break from
the Premier League for a special FA Cup
feature.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
In this edition, it’s back to the FA Cup
as United take another break from the
Premier League to focus on a quarterfinal
replay against Blackburn Rovers.
With the game at Ewood Park
finishing goalless, United then slipped
to defeat at home to Norwich City
in the Premier League before
welcoming Kenny Dalglish’s
Rovers to Bramall Lane.
United were just one place
and point above the relegation
zone, but the FA Cup was proving
to be a welcome distraction as
the Blades twice levelled after
being behind in this 2-2 draw after
extra time.
The match went to penalties
as Alan Kelly’s save from Jason
Wilcox proved crucial with the Blades
advancing to the semis after a 5-3 win in
the shootout.

UNITED’S FA CUP FIRST…
A statistical article mentioned the prospect of both clubs seeing an FA Cup tie
decided by penalties for the first time. This, of course, came to pass. From 1990-91
onwards, ties had been restricted to a maximum of two games.
DAVE BASSETT…
Dave Bassett reiterated the Premier League remained the priority, but revealed
a desire to reach the semis for the first time after losing in the last eight on two
previous occasions. The Blades boss also spoke heavily on the winner of this tie
being able to play at Wembley following the decision to stage Arsenal v Tottenham
at the national stadium. In later years, this was a decision he admitted probably went
against United.
CORK HOPES FOR DERBY…
With United and Wednesday still in the competition, most were hoping
for an all-Sheffield semi – but not Alan Cork. This article reiterates Cork’s
birthplace being Derby, with the then 34-year-old preferring to face his
boyhood side who took on Wednesday in a sixth round replay. Cork also
spoke of his memories of being a FA Cup winner with Wimbledon.
FA CUP...
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
One of the great FA Cup nights in
Sheffield United’s history, a night which
will live long in the memory of those
who were there, and an occasion Mitch
Ward is not likely to forget.
Initially named on the bench for this
quarter-final replay, the boyhood Blade
would play the stellar role in United’s
dramatic penalty shootout victory
against a big-spending Blackburn side
who were heavy favourites for the tie.
United had already achieved a terrific
result at Ewood Park following a 0-0
draw to get Kenny Dalglish’s Premier
League high-flyers back to Bramall
Lane, as Ward explained:
“It was a great result for us at Ewood
Park because they were a really good
side. We got them back to the Lane
and it was just a fantastic atmosphere
from the first whistle. It would prove
to be a night to remember for me
and the team.”
Steve Livingstone headed in from
a corner to give Blackburn the lead
on 47 minutes before Ward equalised
after forcing the ball home following
Alan Cork’s knockdown with eight
minutes remaining.
Into extra time and Rovers re-took
the lead when Tim Sherwood crossed
for Mike Newell to convert but on 112
minutes Cork hooked a ball into the
near post where Ward netted again to
take the game to penalties.
Ward recalled: “It was a funny night
really because I was actually a sub after
a bit of a fall out with Harry at that time.
He left me out and put Gagey (Kevin
Gage) back in. Kev then got injured
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
▲ With the matcball afterwards in the dressing room
after about 25 minutes, so I managed
to get on and ended up scoring two
goals and successfully took a penalty in
the shootout.
“From what I remember Corky was
instrumental in both my goals. One of
them skimmed my nose at one point
and the other was a decent left footed
finish after getting across the front
of the goal.”
A hat-trick of some sorts was then
completed for Mitch who stepped
forward to net from the spot, followed
by a tame effort from Jason Wilcox
which was saved by Alan Kelly.
Successful penalties from Charlie
Hartfield and Alan Cork followed,

with an emphatic effort from Glyn
Hodges also beating Bobby Mimms.
Blackburn had converted their efforts,
so it all came down to John Pemberton
to rifle home his spot kick to take
United through.
Mitch said: “I took the first one. I
remember saying to Harry, being full
of confidence after scoring two in
the game, that I’d take the first one. It
went in and everything turned out well
after that!
“All five penalties went in, and they
were all brilliant penalties. When
Pembo stepped forward I must admit
I had a big doubt! We used to call him
‘stand-finder’ so there were one or two
little nerves! But he rifled it in, didn’t
he? Great penalty, and when it hit the
net, the noise was incredible, just a
fantastic night.”
And whilst Mitch says 30 years on
he still has wonderful memories of a
famous night, he also has some tangible
ones too, revealing the matchball is
still tucked safely away somewhere
in his home.
He smiled: “I’ve still got the ball. I
think Deano fetched it for me and got
it signed which was nice of him. It is
just sat at home, it’s not on display, it’s
packed away somewhere but I still have
it and I still have great memories from a
fantastic night.”
Blades Tales
Tonight, marks the 65th anniversary
of United fan Chris Wikeley’s first ever
game supporting his beloved Blades.
Here Chris recounts his experience, and
many others during his long-standing
support of the Red and White Wizards...
March 1st 1958,
aged 11, my first
visit to a Blades
game and the start of a
lifelong relationship. My
first friend at school in
Sheffield was a lad from
Rotherham who shared
my interest in football
despite our respective
families having no interest
in the beautiful game, so
neither of us had been to
any games.
On a visit to my friend’s
home in Rotherham, he
told me Sheffield United
were playing Rotherham
United at Millmoor that
afternoon and asked if
should we go? I thought
we should as he could
support Rotherham and
I would support the
Blades. So off we went not
knowing what to expect
but very excited.
Given the restrictions
and regulations nowadays,
I still marvel at what
we did. Just the two of
us went to the ground
and I have a vague
recollection of getting in
as two for the price of one
and a bit! I can remember
▲ Chris pictured in his Blades shirt on an artic cruise
the terrace on which we
stood but not where it was
in the ground in relation
to the other supporters.
We did, however, seem to
have space around us and
it was not a crush.
My friend was jumping
up and down shouting
“Rotherham United,
Rotherham United” so
I countered by shouting
“Sheffield United, Sheffield
United”. I wanted to show
my ‘extensive’ knowledge
of the team by shouting
for a player or two but
I could only recall one
name: Alan Hodgkinson.
So, I spent a lot of time
S HEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

68 UTB
▲ Alan Hodgkinson didn’t play in the
game, despite Chris shouting his name
chanting “Hodgkinson,
Hodgkinson, Hodgkinson”,
especially when he was
in the goal nearest to us.
The folly of this particular
chanting only materialised
on the following Monday!
I also remember
cheering our goals as they
went in – and quite a few
did – we won 6-1! I peaked
early: this is the best result
I have ever witnessed,
although the 2008 5-2
victory over Charlton
Athletic came close.
The match report
in Monday’s Sheffield
Telegraph was headed
up ‘Only Sheffield were
United’. Imagine my
embarrassment on
reading that Thompson
was in goal for us as
Hodgkinson was injured.
So much for my helpful
chanting. Funny how you
can still feel embarrassed
years after the event!
Of course, there have
been ups (Jagielka’s
goal v Leeds, Jones and
Birchenall in harness, the
Wilder years, 100 points v
Chesterfield) and downs
(John Lundstram not
cutting his toenails for
VAR at Spurs, incessant
play-offs and semi-finals
not going to plan) but it’s
the downs that prove the
strength of support.
When we were
relegated to the Fourth
Division two moments
stand out. The first was
that I heard the result
driving along Dawlish
sea front (I was living
and working in the West
▲ Jones and Birchenall pictured centrally in this image with Tony Wagstaff and Len Badger
alongside boss John Harris. Their departures one of Chris’ United lows
S HEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

UTB 69
▲ Another FA Cup near miss for United in the semi-final against Arsenal
Country, where I have now
retired though still have
a season ticket) and my
then wife saying that “it
doesn’t matter!” All I could
reply was (with young
children in the back of
the car) was “of course it
matters!” (This, by the way,
was not the sole reason
why we got divorced
but it helped!). Secondly
another friend on hearing
about the relegation
said that I should change
allegiance to which
I replied “that is a crime
worse than treason”.
So, there we have it,
a lifetime of painful lows
and ecstatic highs; never
wavering in my support. I’d
love to celebrate my 65th
anniversary game with
a scoreline in our favour
similar to my first game. Is
that too much to ask?!
Ending the club’s 15-year wait for
do that in the final third of this season.
With a proud record of success
Tottenham will be aiming to lift that
trophy for the first time since 1991
and next Wednesday, they have an
they look to overturn a 1-0 first leg
THE EX-FILES
David McGoldrick
EACH WEEK UTB CATCHES UP WITH THE PROGRESS OF SOME OF THE NAMES WHO ONCE
GRACED BRAMALL LANE, BUT ARE NOW CONTINUING THEIR CAREER ELSEWHERE…
David McGoldrick is off the mark
for his new club Derby County
after scoring a dramatic stoppage
time winner recently against
Peterborough United.
Trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men,
things looked bleak for the Rams
until an equaliser from Jason
Knight on 88 minutes was followed
up by McGoldrick’s winner from
12 yards.
After missing the first four games
of the campaign through injury,
McGoldrick is now finding his
feet at Pride Park after his highly
successful stint at Bramall Lane
came to an end at the conclusion
of last season.
“As a striker you enjoy your
goals, and especially when
they come as a winner as well,”
McGoldrick said of his first strike.
“We hadn’t scored for a few
games, so to get two right at the
end was nice. It was a pleasing day
all around and it’s always special
to turn it around late on.
“We are all together as one in
the dressing room and it helps with
the team bonding too, celebrating
together at the end, especially
as quite a few of us have come
through the door this summer.
The changing room was very
happy after.”
Grateful to be back fit again after
recovering from the injury which
curtailed his final season in S2, the
ex-Forest front man is now focused
on a strong run in the side.
He added: “I feel I am getting
fitter. I came here after a four or
five-month spell out, following an
operation. I’ve been building my
fitness up and I had a setback by
doing too much too soon, but now
I am building things up slowly.”
MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
Have you tried our weekly
mental health sessions
for men?
Talk Club provides a safe
space for men aged 18+ to
share feelings, listen and
meet like-minded people
to help improve mental
health and reduce the risk
of suicide amongst men.
Talk Club’s co-founder
Mike McCarthy, who lost
his son Ross to suicide in
2021, is leading the charge
to help men struggling with
poor mental health.
Mike said: “I’ve spoken
to hundreds of bereaved
mums, dads, brothers,
sisters, etc – I’ve lost count.
They all tell me a similar
story, that when it comes to
the crisis end, when people
are suicidal, the help is just
not there.”
Since Mike started the
initiative, we’ve been able
to welcome hundreds
of men to Bramall Lane
to open up about their
struggles.
One of our regular
participants shared with
us about how much Talk
Club had helped him: “I’ve
been coming to Talk Club
for over eight months
now and it has played an
integral part in improving
my mental health. It’s given
me a support network
and inspired me to leave
the house more often as
I would previously only
go out around once a
month. It’s also helped
encourage me to start
taking better care of both
my personal hygiene and
diet. I have lost over two
stones in weight and Talk
Club has definitely helped
me achieve this. I would
recommend others to
attend.”
Sessions are free
and take place every
Wednesday, 6pm-8pm
at the Blades Family Hub
(John Street).
If you or someone you
know may benefit from
Talk Club, feel free to turn
up on the night, or for any
further questions please
contact health@sufccommunity.co.uk.
FA CUP
FACTS&STATS
2022-23
– This season’s
competition is the 142nd
in the long and illustrious
history of the FA Cup with
the first ever taking place
back in 1871.
– Currently Wrexham’s
Paul Mullin has scored
the most goals during this
season’s FA Cup campaign
with eight to his name from
five outings.
– In total, 732 teams have
competed in this year’s FA
Cup with initial ties taking
place during the first week
in August.
– The lowest ranked team
this season to reach round
five of the competition
is League Two Grimsby
Town. They haven’t
reached this stage of the
FA Cup since 1996.
– This season’s final
will again take place at
Wembley Stadium where
it has been staged since
2007 after the stadium
was rebuilt. Bramall Lane
is one of 13 stadiums
(including both new and
old Wembley) to have
staged an FA Cup final. The
Lane hosted the 1912 FA
Cup Final Replay between
Barnsley and West Brom.
– Emirates are again
sponsoring the FA Cup this
season, they have done so
since 2015. They are one
of just five official sponsors
of the competition with
Littlewoods becoming the
first in 1994.
– FA Cup replays returned
this season for rounds
three and four but tonight’s
tie will be decided on the
night with extra time and
penalties in operation
during round five. Replays
were first removed from
round five during the 2019-
20 competition.
