Chris recalls: “This was my
first game back after six or
seven weeks out I remember,
Having looked back, reflected and
reminisced, Chris is understandably
looking forward to facing the class of 2023
in tonight’s fascinating fifth-round clash at
Bramall Lane.
He concluded: “We’re looking forward
to the tie, it is a one-off game, and it is
an opportunity for those selected to test
themselves against some of the elite
players of the Premier League. It’ll be a
packed house I would imagine, both sets
of supporters will want to see their team
progress to the next round. They will
want to win the competition and have a
good chance I would say, but there is an
excitement for us post Watford, which was
a massive win. There will be chances for
players to grasp, it is great game for us to
get stuck into and at home we believe we
can beat anyone on the night. It is brilliant
the tie will be settled on the night, arguably
it would hopefully give us an edge if we can
stay in the game with the fans right behind
us like they were at the weekend.”
I played left-sided centre-half
and unfortunately for us Gareth
Bale turned up in his prime,
he was absolutely unplayable
and scored a hat-trick. It was a
long afternoon for us all, but for
me personally I was struggling
towards the end and Son has
cut inside me and put one in
the top corner. It wasn’t a nice
experience, but Hecky had taken
over by this point and was doing
a wonderful job in lifting the lads
and trying to instill that belief
in such testing circumstances.
We won a few games after this
against Everton and Palace, so
we finished pretty strongly, but
relegation had been on the cards
for much of the season and it
hurt. We were still on the biggest
stage though, there was a lot of
speculation about Bale at the
time, he was on-loan from Real
Madrid and hadn’t played much,
but typically he was on fire in this
game and he still had that turn
of pace. I remember him going
through and I was just fading
away chasing him. It was so
hard playing against the likes of
Gareth, Harry Kane, Son, others
too when we’d been on the back
foot all season having worked so
hard for the opportunity to be in
the Premier League.”
