Motson’s links to the Steel City go back
before he became the nation’s number
one football commentator. He enjoyed a
stint at the Sheffield Morning Telegraph
and also worked as a freelancer for BBC
Radio Sheffield.
Inevitably, with the shared Sheffield
links, Currie and Motson’s path often
crossed, and the goal was always a
conversation starter, as TC explained:
“I met him a few times over the years at
dinners and award nights. We spoke about
the goal when I met him in Hertfordshire
once and a few years ago he was given
a lifetime achievement award by the

about it again. Whenever I met him,
inevitably that piece of commentary
always came up.
“He was always good company, a
proper gent to be honest. It’s a sad loss
and it’ll be strange knowing he’s not
around anymore.”
MOTSON, THE
FA CUP AND THE
BLADES
As it’s the FA Cup Fifth Round, it’s worth
recalling some more famous Motson
commentary on the Blades from February
14th 1993.
The Blades defeated Manchester United
at Bramall Lane 2-1 despite trailing to a
Ryan Giggs strike. Jamie Hoyland levelled
before Glyn Hodges netted what would
prove to be the winner.
“Back in again by Hoyland. Gayle gets
up again, Hodges is there!”
The words of Motson, before he
trotted out another wonderful line of
commentary.
“This man’s left foot is magic!”
He wasn’t wrong as United won the
tie on the way to an eventual semi-final
against Wednesday at Wembley.
