40 UTB WHAT’S THE STORY? In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW features a Blades related photograph from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it… United began the 1965-66 season in the old First Division with a young squad and one that included winger Gil Reece, their first new signing since the 1960-61 season. This was also the first season that teams could use a substitute for injured players. In the course of the season midfielder Tony Wagstaff made United history by becoming the club’s first substitute to appear in a league game. As in the previous three seasons, the Blades started the season well and by early October were top of the table. There were a number of impressive results in the team’s strong start to the season including a 1-0 win at Liverpool, a 2-2 draw at Leeds United and 1-0 home win against local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. However, three consecutive defeats between 23rd October and 6th November halted the team’s progress. The last of those three defeats had seen United feature away at Arsenal on BBC TV’s Match of the Day programme. It wasn’t a memorable appearance as the Blades lost 6-2! The week after that humbling defeat to the Gunners, Saturday 13th November 1965, United faced Everton at home. Today’s action photograph was taken during that game. It shows United’s local born defender Reg Matthewson challenging Everton goalkeeper Andy Rankin for the ball. In close attendance trying to protect his ‘keeper is Everton’s Brian Harris. Reg had a solid career with the Blades making 149 league appearances before later playing for Fulham and Chester. In the background to the action stands the old John Street Stand and terrace. On the opposite side of the ground to the John Street Stand, Bramall Lane was still a three-sided structure as Yorkshire County Cricket club used the stadium in the summer. Considering the attractive opposition, and United’s still promising position in the league table, the game only attracted a crowd of 16,579. United struggled to attract the type of gates they hoped for with 14 out of their 20 home games attracting crowds of less than 20,000. SHEFFIELD UNITED vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
UTB 41 The Blades won this game 2-0 with striker Mick Jones notching one in each half to end United’s poor run of results. However, the win did not spark another unbeaten run as they only won one of their next eight games and ultimately ended the season in a disappointing ninth place after such a promising start. United did, however, have the satisfaction of completing the league double over Everton winning 3-1 at Goodison Park on 9th April with Jones again scoring a double. He finished as United’s leading scorer with 21 league goals. Everton did have the satisfaction of winning the FA Cup beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in the final.
