A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
One of the great FA Cup nights in
Sheffield United’s history, a night which
will live long in the memory of those
who were there, and an occasion Mitch
Ward is not likely to forget.
Initially named on the bench for this
quarter-final replay, the boyhood Blade
would play the stellar role in United’s
dramatic penalty shootout victory
against a big-spending Blackburn side
who were heavy favourites for the tie.
United had already achieved a terrific
result at Ewood Park following a 0-0
draw to get Kenny Dalglish’s Premier
League high-flyers back to Bramall
Lane, as Ward explained:
“It was a great result for us at Ewood
Park because they were a really good
side. We got them back to the Lane
and it was just a fantastic atmosphere
from the first whistle. It would prove
to be a night to remember for me
and the team.”
Steve Livingstone headed in from
a corner to give Blackburn the lead
on 47 minutes before Ward equalised
after forcing the ball home following
Alan Cork’s knockdown with eight
minutes remaining.
Into extra time and Rovers re-took
the lead when Tim Sherwood crossed
for Mike Newell to convert but on 112
minutes Cork hooked a ball into the
near post where Ward netted again to
take the game to penalties.
Ward recalled: “It was a funny night
really because I was actually a sub after
a bit of a fall out with Harry at that time.
He left me out and put Gagey (Kevin
Gage) back in. Kev then got injured

after about 25 minutes, so I managed
to get on and ended up scoring two
goals and successfully took a penalty in
the shootout.
“From what I remember Corky was
instrumental in both my goals. One of
them skimmed my nose at one point
and the other was a decent left footed
finish after getting across the front
of the goal.”
A hat-trick of some sorts was then
completed for Mitch who stepped
forward to net from the spot, followed
by a tame effort from Jason Wilcox
which was saved by Alan Kelly.
