The passing of Pele over the
Christmas period of 2022 was a
sad blow for the beautiful game.
It’s amazing a player who hung his
boots up so long ago could still have such
a profound effect on the feelings and
emotions of fans in the modern era, a good
many of whom would never have had the
chance to have actually seen him play.
He stood for all that the game should be,
and that counts for everything. A humble
man with a huge reputation who used his
life across the globe to pass on the word
in every corner he reached, and that, my
friends, is some legacy. An icon and then
some.
Sheffield always feels like it has had a
certain connection with the great man.
Generations have been weaned on the
stories of him appearing for his beloved
Santos, not once but twice, in the Steel
City. Santos played here in ‘72 during the
dreaded power cuts and on a weekday

a fair few absentees from school and
indeed work on that day, but if you believe
all who say they were present to watch
the maestro in action, then the population
of South Yorkshire had all crammed into
