NON-LEAGUE NUGGETS
Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles six notable Spurs players signed from non-League clubs...
HARRY CLARKE
England international
centre-half Harry Clarke
was ever-present as
Tottenham Hotspur
won the League
Championship in 1950-51.
Following RAF service,
he helped Lovells Athletic
win the Welsh Cup in
1948 and moved to White
Hart Lane in March 1949.
He went straight into the
first-team and was also
ever-present as Spurs
won the Second Division
title in 1949-50. Capped
against Scotland in April
1954, he missed just
one match that season
and netted four goals
in 295 League outings,
becoming Llanelli’s
player-boss in February
1959. He later managed
Romford for 13 years and
worked for a security
transit company. He died
in April 2000.
GEORGE ROBB
England international
winger George Robb was
Tottenham Hotspur’s top
scorer in 1953-54. The
schoolmaster gained
18 England amateur
caps while at Finchley
before joining Spurs
in December 1951 and
scored on his League
debut in that month’s 3-0
win at Charlton Athletic.
He missed just one match
as they reached the FA
Cup semi-finals in 1955-
56, then helped finish
League Championship
runners-up in 1956-57.
Scoring 53 goals in 182
League games, an injury
curtailed his career in
May 1960. He returned to
teaching as sports master
at Christ’s College in
Finchley, then at Ardingly
College near Haywards
Heath and died on
Christmas Day 2011.
RON HENRY
England international
left-back Ron Henry
was ever-present in
Tottenham Hotspur’s
1960-61 League and FA
Cup ‘Double’ success.
A former Luton Town
amateur, he played
for Harpenden and
Redbourn before turning
professional with Spurs in
January 1955. He made
his League debut in their
1-0 defeat at Huddersfield
three months later
and understudied Mel
Hopkins before forming a
notable partnership with
Peter Baker. Also helping
Spurs to win the FA Cup
in 1962 and ECWC in
1964, he scored once in
247 League games before
hanging up his boots in
May 1966. He later had
a 14 acre bedding plant
nursery in Redbourn and
died in December 2014.
