FOUR PARKLANDS Christchurch
United players are set to travel to the
United States as part of a Junior White Sox
team.
Caitlin Henderson, Kaiyah Ratu and
Trinity Mackley-Flutey (non-travelling
reserve) have been named in the under-18
team, while Maddison Parsons (nontravelling
reserve) has made the under-16
side. Five other Canterbury players
have also been named in the two sides
which are set to travel to the Top Gun
invitational tournament in Kansas City,
Missouri, in June.
About 250 teams from across the world
are expected to play in the tournament.
The New Zealand teams were named last
week.
Former White Sox captain and
Olympian Kiri Shaw will resume her
role as head coach of the Junior White
Sox. She will be joined by new assistant
coach, Carley Ratu, who is the mother of
under-18 squad member Kaiyah.
It will be Kaiyah’s second trip overseas
in the last three months. She also travelled
to Australia in December with the White
Sox squad.
Shaw said the teams are lucky to get the
opportunity to see and compete against
some of the best young female softball
players in the world.
“This whole experience is going to be
massive, I can’t think of anything better
than throwing ourselves into the firing
line, so to speak,” she said.
The tournament is the start of the Junior
White Sox’ preparations for the first World
Cup regional qualifiers next year, ahead of
the 2025 U18 softball world cup.
