Fundraiser about to roar
DEDICATION: New Brighton Lions Club members will
deliver the compost bags to your door. Below – the money
raised may go towards a barbecue area at Rawhiti Domain.
• By Heidi Slade
RAWHITI Domain picknickers
may benefit from the New
Brighton Lions Club fundraiser.
The club is holding its twiceyearly
pea straw and compost
sale this month.
The members may put the
money raised towards a new
barbecue area at the domain,
complete with picnic tables.
Club spokesperson Rosmund
Smith said Rawhiti was
“fantastic” place to put the
barbecue area.
“We wanted to be a part of
that,’’ she said.
“It’s something we could put in
for the community to use as they
need it.”
The club has held the
regular fundraising sales
since 2019. The club donated the
New Brighton toy treasure chest
to the community last year.
The money is allocated
to where it is needed in the
community.
Past sales had been “very
successful” and demand for
the pea straw and compost is
growing, Rosmund said.
The club hopes to sell 600 bales
of pea straw and 450 bags of
compost this month.”Every time
we do it we get more and more
orders.”
The pea straw costs $12 a
bale and the compost $11 a bag,
including delivery.
To place an order, phone 027
223 1227 or email newbrighton@
lionsclubs.org.nz
Deliveries will be made by the
New Brighton Lions on Saturday,
April 1, with help from the
Ellesmere Lions Club and the
QEII Leos.
“[The Leos] are the ones
who do the heavy lifting,”
Rosmund said.
“It’s hard work, but it’s fun.”
Getting
to school
safely
THE ANNUAL Walk or Wheel
to School Week is back with 76
schools and a kindergarten taking
part next week.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said the event will focus
on getting to school safely.
“Walking or wheeling to
school helps reduce our carbon
emissions and keeps our kids safe
with a reduction of vehicle traffic
at the school gate,” he said.
It also shows children they
can enjoy the health benefits of
exercise, he said.
There will be prizes during the
week, including bikes, scooters
and helmets.
“We want to show children that
there’s a bunch of alternatives to
taking the car to and from school
and ones that can be a lot of fun,”
said Wright.
