The 21st of March is recognized as 

Emirati Mother’s Day in the United Arab 

Emirates. This day is a celebration to 

express appreciation and celebrate 

mothers. Mother’s Day is commemorated in 

several ways, including with gifts, visits, and 

special events. Mothers are frequently the 

recipients of expressions of adoration from 

their children in the way of flowers, cards, and 

presents. Treating a mother to a day at the 

spa or giving her a massage are also popular 

ways to show appreciation on Mother’s Day. 

Local communities and groups also host public 

celebrations in addition to private gatherings. 

Concerts, festivals, and parades are just a few 

of the ways in which communities may unite to 

celebrate mothers and appreciate the value 

they add to our lives. 

As a celebration of the contributions mothers 

make to society and the future of the United 

Arab Emirates, Mother’s Day is a particularly 

momentous occasion. The government of the 

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made great 

strides in supporting women and families, 

including offering free health care and education 

and flexible work arrangements for working 

mothers. In addition to their role as mothers, 

many women are also balancing careers and 

other responsibilities, making their contributions 

all the more impressive. The UAE government 

recognizes this, and its support for working 

mothers helps to ensure that mothers are able 

to make a positive impact in both their personal 

and professional lives. This underscores mothers’ 

prominence in society and the impact of the 

contributions toward the collective future. The 

United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the world 

celebrate Mother’s Day as a special occasion to 

honour and appreciate mothers. It’s a moment 

to celebrate mothers for everything they do for 

their children and families and to appreciate 

the positive impact they have on society. There 

are many ways to appreciate the remarkable 

mothers in our lives on Mother’s Day, from little

Heart Brush: A celebration 

of love and color 

On 15th February, a group of local 

artists and community members 

came together at the Wild Paint 

House to celebrate love and color 

in a unique way. The event, called Heart Brush, 

was a celebration of painting and love where 

blank canvases where turned into beautiful 

pieces of art. 

The Wild Paint House was the perfect 

venue for the event, providing ample space 

for participants to express their creativity. Wild 

Paint House is an art studio that offers unique 

and exciting activities for people of all ages. 

Experience pendulum art, trapezes, acrylic 

pour on canvases, Fluid Bears, manual spin art 

machines, and UV light splatting or spinning. 

For the adventurous, try legal wall tagging and 

spraying on outdoor walls, available in cooler 

months. Activities are suitable for adults and 

kids over 1m tall, and provide a dynamic and 

unconventional way to create art. 

Participants were provided with paint, brushes, 

and canvases to express their love in the most 

colorful way possible as each couple received 

two regular canvas and one heart-shaped canvas 

to paint together. From simple heart designs to 

intricate love letters, the walls and canvases 

were filled with a burst of vibrant colors that 

expressed the spirit of the season. 

Heart Brush was not just a celebration of art, 

but a celebration of community. People of all 

ages and backgrounds came together to create 

something beautiful. Whether it was couples 

painting together or strangers collaborating 

on a wall, Heart Brush was a reminder of the 

power of love to bring people together. 

Throughout the day, there was music from 

a live DJ, adding to the already energetic 

atmosphere. Food and drinks were also available, 

as well as artists on hand to provide inspiration 

and guidance. Children were encouraged to 

participate, and there was a special section 



of the Wild Paint House reserved just for them. 

Parents watched proudly as their little ones 

painted their hearts out, creating memories 

that will last a lifetime. 

At the end of the day, the walls were filled 

with an explosion of color and love. It was a 

beautiful sight to see, a true testament to the 

power of art and community. Florescent neon 

paints flashed brightly after the lights went off 

giving off an extra bit of punch to the entire 

experience. 

Heart Brush was not just an event, but a 

movement that brought people together to 

celebrate love and creativity. 

As one participant put it, “Today was more 

than just splashing colors on walls, it was about 

spreading love and positivity. Heart Brush was 

a celebration of our community and the power 

of love to bring people together.” 

Heart Brush was truly a celebration of love 

and color, a testament to the beauty of art 

and community. We can’t wait to see what this 

group of passionate artists and community 

members will create next.

Sikka Art and Design Festival 

celebrated Dubai’s growing 

creative landscape 

The 11th edition of Sikka Art and Design 

Festival was held in the heart 

of Old Dubai’s Al Fahidi Historical 

Neighbourhood from February 24 

to March 5. The festival was held under the 

patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa 

bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, 

Chairperson of Dubai Culture and a member 

of the Dubai Council. The festival celebrated 

Dubai’s growing creative landscape 

by showcasing various exhibitions, installations, 

talks, poetry nights, musical performances, 

workshops, and thought-provoking 

films. 

Dubai Culture’s flagship initiative, Sikka 

Art & Design Festival, aligned with Dubai’s 

cultural vision of cementing the emirate’s 

position as a global center for culture, an incubator 

for creativity, and a thriving hub for 

talent. This year, Sikka presented a variety of 

art projects and performances, which were 

displayed across 13 houses, each showcasing 

different types of art, installations, 

digital pieces, and various interactive spaces. 

These included Sikka House, Khaleeji 

House, Bait Al Film, Digital Arts House, Photography 

House, Bait Al Khazaf, and Talli 

House, the latest addition to Sikka. 

The festival also featured six murals and 

nine outdoor installations, in addition to holding 

over 100 panels, talks, and workshops 

highlighting the developments of the arts 

sector and its global trends, as well as various 

cinema, music, and entertainment activities 

and performances. The festival provided 

a unique platform for over 188 Emirati 

and UAE & GCC-based creatives to showcase 

their creativity and artistic innovations. 

Sikka Art & Design Festival was a unique 

event on the regional art map that represented 

an opportunity for emerging artists to 

create new success stories in the framework 

of their interaction with the cultural industries 

as one of the main catalysts for Dubai’s 

growth and economic diversification. This 

year’s edition highlighted the developments 

and successes made by Sikka Art and Design 

Festival on the local and regional scene 

over the past decade. 

Overall, the festival was an exciting celebration 

of creativity and innovation that 

showcased the growing artistic talent in 

Dubai and promoted culture and creativity 

among children and visitors alike.

of art at World Art Dubai 2023 

World Art Dubai is an annual international 

art fair that brings 

together art collectors, galleries, 

and artists from around 

the world. The 9th edition of the event is set 

to take place from 9th to 12th March 2023 

at Dubai World Trade Centre, offering visitors 

a chance to explore a diverse range of 

artwork. The fair aims to cater to all tastes 

and budgets, featuring affordable as well as 

more expensive pieces of original art. 

One of the most unique features of World 

Art Dubai is the Urban Art DXB area, which 

is dedicated to live street art. This section of 

the exhibit is particularly popular with younger 

visitors who appreciate the dynamic and 

interactive nature of this art form. The Artwalk 

is another popular feature of the fair, 

which showcases a range of artwork along a 

designated walkway, allowing visitors to engage 

with the art in an outdoor setting. 

Art for Every Wall is another highlight of 

the event, featuring a range of affordable 

and unique art pieces that are suitable for 

any space. This section of the fair is particularly 

popular with visitors who are looking for 

unique and affordable art to decorate their 

homes. 

WAD NEXT is a new feature of World Art 

Dubai that showcases NFT art from local and 

international artists and galleries. This section 

of the fair reflects the growing interest 

in digital art and the increasing popularity of 

NFTs. 

The World Art Dubai Emerging Visual Artists 

Prize is a competition that provides upand-coming 

artists with the opportunity to 

showcase their artwork in a complimentary 

space at the next edition of the exhibit. This 

prize is designed to support emerging talent 

and provide a platform for them to showcase 

their work to a wider audience. 

Overall, World Art Dubai 2023 is an exciting 

event that offers visitors the opportunity 

to explore a diverse range of artwork, engage 

with artists and galleries from around 

the world, and expand their creative skills

Earth Hour 

On the last Saturday in March, from 

8:30 to 9:30 pm, people worldwide 

will switch off their lights in honour 

of Earth Hour. And it’s always local 

time for you. So, the planet won’t become 

completely dark at once. Instead, the time 

zones will determine when it gets dark. 

Additionally, nothing will become dark. The 

goal is to cut off unnecessary lighting. You 

won’t have to work by candlelight or sit in the 

dark for an hour. 

On the other hand, it might be enjoyable to 

spend an hour in the dark. But the decision 

is entirely yours. 

Earth Hour is an annual event that encourages 

people and organizations to turn off their nonessential 

lights for one hour as a symbolic 

gesture to raise awareness about the importance 

of taking action to combat climate change. 

The event has been taking place since 2007 

and is organized by the World Wide Fund for 

Nature (WWF). 

The goals and implications of Earth Hour 

2023 include: 

• Raising awareness: The primary goal of Earth 

Hour is to raise awareness about the need 

to take action to combat climate change.

Unique visions layered with colourful 

imagery 

“I’m constantly approaching a subject with a 

different method. I have my repertoire of building 

blocks for composition or icons I use as familiar 

touchstones,” says Daniel. 

- Exclusive to Magzoid 

Daniel Merriam is a contemporary 

surrealist best known for his dry 

brush technique and imaginative 

style. Merriam’s unique visions 

are layered with colourful imagery in a style 

that reclaims the territory of dreams and romance 

for both classical and contemporary 

art lovers alike. 

Born in 1963 in York, Maine and one of 

seven children, he taught himself to paint 

at a very young age and used his art as a 

method of reflective play throughout his 

childhood. He studied mechanical and architectural 

design and applied his dimensional 

skills and passion for architecture to 

the family’s design and construction business. 

He then turned his talents to the commercial 

art field, working as an architectural 

and commercial illustrator for a number of 

multinational corporations. 

By the age of 16 he had already garnered 

national media attention for his political cartooning. 

He studied architecture and journalism 

and applied his disciplines to illustration 

and design. At age 23 he turned his focus 

away from political and commercial applications 

of his work and began building a body 

of work intended solely for a fine art exhibition. 

Well knowing the power of the pen, Merriam 

incorporated his intuitive sense of design 

and human behaviour into an immersion of 

surrealism that borrowed from Dadaism but 

diverted to ideals of the romantic and aesthetic 

movements. In his early career, he 

worked primarily in watercolour. 

Now Merriam works with various paints 

and substrates, finding excitement in the exploration

Undying passion for 

capturing life’s simple 

beauty 

“Be somebody nobody thought you could be,” says Gunjan 


The quote that has stuck in Gunjan’s 

mind and pushed her to pursue the 

field of art despite being a commerce 

graduate. One might consider her lack 

of attending any formal art school as her deficiency; 

however, she feels that this is what has 

helped her to grow in an unconditional manner. 

“I am drawn to the beauty in the little things 

around me. They are the things that inspire 

me every day to portray their simple beauty 

in my art. I have always had an artistic flair 

since I was a child,” says Gunjan. 

Art was something that came naturally to her 

and it was an outlet that gave her the space to 

express herself. No matter what she has been 

doing, somehow, she always found time to draw. 

Her interest and dedication have pushed 

her to work towards specializing in portraits 

and realistic sketches using charcoal as a 

medium. She has honed her skills by sketching 

her friends and family (including her dog!) She 

has a keen interest towards detailing and she 

makes sure that this is what catches the eyes 

of her onlooker. 

My mantra is

Luigi 

Profeta 

A Perfect union between the arts of 

sculpturing and painting 

“You become an artist because you are, not because you want to be,” says Luigi 

Lights, geometries and colours; Luigi 

Profeta’s canvases are prism whose 

faces correspond to beams of light, 

which lead to the dreamlike world he 

created. A world where bright colours cross 

and collide with ordered geometric shapes, a 

perfect union between metaphysics and dada, 

where the return to order and the poetics of 

the useless object is sincere. 

Luigi Profeta was born in Milan on 13 July 

1969. 

From an early age, he developed a natural 

propensity towards art, which, already at an 

early age, led him to try his hand at small 

wooden constructions. A reference more 

towards sculpture than towards painting and 

not surprisingly, his works are a perfect union 

between the two arts. 

Driven towards other studies, Luigi graduated 

as an electrical engineer and inherited his father’s 

passion for cycling. His nature, that of an artist, 

is therefore obscured in favour of sport, which 

led him to compete in the amateur category. 

After he stopped running around the age of 

eighteen, his passion, which then, according to 

the artist, is “more than passion is a mission”, 

comes out “strong and ferocious, like a scream 

of love.” 

He, therefore, opens a knitwear workshop 

with his wife, where he begins to create his 

first drawings and paintings. After all, Luigi 

claims, “you become an artist because you 

are, not because you want to be.” There is no 

escaping the call of art and so, encouraged by 

the master Alfonso Madaluni, who encouraged 

him to continue, he decided to close the knitwear 

workshop and devote himself exclusively to art. 

Influenced by artists such as Kandinsky, by 

his geometric and compositional rigour, his 

works are pictosculptures, carefully studied 

and meditated, which conceal the artist’s soul 

between shapes and colours. A cathartic soul 

seeks to externalize his emotions through 

collective psychology, that is, to speak not

only of himself but of each of us. In fact, Luigi 

claims art “is the fruit of the thought of whoever 

makes it” and therefore, like someone who eats 

a fruit picked from a tree, so art must be able

Cormano, where together with the loving help 

of his wife, he paints and manages the Click 

Art cultural centre.

The 16th edition of Art Dubai concludes with 

resounding success for global art and 

culture 

Art Dubai, the foremost international 

art fair in the Middle East, held its 

16th edition from 1-5 March 2023 

at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai. The 

event showcased over 100 galleries from 

43 countries across four gallery sections: 

Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Art 

Dubai Digital. The fair featured both affordable 

and more expensive artwork, with over 60% of 

the gallery programme drawn from the Global 

South, reaffirming Art Dubai’s position as a 

leading marketplace for art from this region. 

Art Dubai Contemporary exhibited works 

from 72 galleries from 33 countries, with a 

particular emphasis on art and artists from the 

Global South. The 2023 edition showcased 21 

Dubai-based galleries, a record number that 

reflected the continued growth of Dubai’s artistic 

ecosystem and its increasing importance as 

a global creative and cultural hub. 

The 2023 edition of Art Dubai Digital, which 

featured galleries with innovative new media 

programmes and digital platforms building virtual 

art spaces, was curated by Singapore-based 

educator and arts writer Clara Che Wei Peh. 

The Bawwaba section, which means ‘gateway’ 

in Arabic, featured solo presentations by 11 

artists hailing from across the Global South 

and explored contemporary artists’ concerns 

within their worlds. 

The 2023 edition of Art Dubai Modern, 

which was curated by Paris-based critic and 

curator Mouna Mekouar and Italian art historian 

Lorenzo Giusti, focused on the pioneers of 

contemporary art in the MENASA area. This 

section featured solo presentations by the 

region’s Modern masters, reflecting the cultural 

richness and diversity of the region. Art Dubai 

Modern was also accompanied by a special 

talks programme. 

At the heart of the fair’s not-for-profit programme 

was Art Dubai Commissions, which invited 

artists to produce site-specific works at the 

fair, supporting artistic production by local and 

international artists. The 2023 Commissions 

programme featured daily performances and 

food-based experiences exploring themes of 

community, celebration, hope, and connection. 

421, Abu Dhabi’s independent platform 

supporting emerging artists, presented a group 

exhibition curated by UAE-based artist and 

researcher Dania Al Tamimi, exploring time 

as the binding element of the biography of 

objects, the active archive of lives, and the 

solidifying catalyst of experiences. 

Art Dubai was held under the patronage of 

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid 

Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister 

of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and was held 

in partnership with A.R.M. Holding. The fair

A piece of art by Jafri to remain on the moon 

“For Eternity” 

The Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft 

were launched from Cape Canaveral, 

Florida, in 1977. They were sent 

on a mission to investigate the solar 

system and beyond. Each had a “golden 

record,” a copper phonograph disc that 

had pictures, sounds from the natural world, 

and music to give any intelligent species 

the craft might come into contact with a 

glimpse of life on Earth. These were the 

initial pictures that were sent into space. 

Artists are starting to investigate what 

they can do outside of Earth as the Voyagers 

move into interstellar space right now. 

A work by philanthropist and artist Sacha 

Jafri, who is based in Dubai, is scheduled 

to touch down on the moon in March. We 

Rise Together — By the Light of the Moon, 

a piece of art by Jafri, is slated to launch 

into space aboard a United Launch Alliance 

rocket using engines made by Jeff Bezos’ 

Blue Origin. 

The Kennedy Space Center near Cape 

Canaveral, Florida, will host the launch 

during the first week of March. A guy and a 

female figure are shown in the engraving, 

which is surrounded by 88 hearts. “This 

lovely heart motif was used in the original 

artwork. Two individuals are intertwined and 

reuniting, while the environment around 

them is in blossom,” said Jafri. In his design, 

he claims he aimed to express “the 

union of humanity through love and empathy.” 

For his canvas, a gold alloy was developed 

over two years to withstand the 

extreme environment on the lunar surface 

whilst keeping the artwork intact. But the

A lunar lander will place the work in a 

crater known as Lacus Mortis (the Lake of 

Death) where it will remain “for eternity.” 

According to Jafri, the mission will take 

between five days and two weeks to reach

Masterful portrayals of the human 

spirit: An artist’s journey 

“I always try to paint from the heart. Every day I thank God for the opportunity to do this,” says 

Dan Gerhartz 


Born in 1965, Gerhartz grew up in 

rural Wisconsin, an area he continues 

to call home. The unspoiled 

beauty of the nearby Kettle Moraine 

State Forest was his playground as a 

child and provides inspiration for many of 

his paintings today. 

“I’ve been really lucky. I can paint what I 

want to paint. The area around here is so 

beautiful, with its rolling hills, deciduous 

forests, and prairies. I love to place a figure 

against that landscape.” 

Gerhartz credits an inspirational high school 

art instructor, John Baitinger, for helping 

shape his artistic direction. “He guided me 

through my formative years when I didn’t 

know where I wanted to go with my art. But 

I already knew it was going to be a very 

important part of my life.” He continued 

his studies at the American Academy of 

Art in Chicago, where he was awarded 

the Faculty Recommendation Scholarship 

and the President’s Award in 1985. Later, 

artist Richard Schmidt was important in 

Gerhartz’s career through sharing his knowledge 

and skill. 

Despite his remarkable early success, Dan 

Gerhartz is determined to keep growing. 

“This is just the beginning,” he says. “All I 

have to do is open a book with the work of 

the masters. Their technical ability is just so 

humbling. Painting is a never-ending learning 

process. I look forward to learning my 

entire life.” To this end, he spends a great 

deal of time studying the work of artists who 

inspire him, including John Singer Sargent, 

Alphonse Mucha, and the French and 

American Impressionists. Particularly important 

have been Russian artists, especially 

Nicolai Fechin. “The Russians are so loose 

but so honest,” he explains. 

Dan is quick to credit his wife Jennifer, 

whom he married in 1988, for her emotional 

support and objective critique. “She was a 

physical therapist and knew anatomy and 

muscle structure better than I did. She can 

catch flaws I would never see.” Their son 

Nicolai was born in 1992. 

Dan Gerhartz’s brilliant use of light and colour 

has earned him numerous awards in his 

young career. His work has been featured in 

invitational exhibitions, including the Prix de 

West and the Artists of America exhibitions, 

as well as in public and private collections 

nationwide. He has taught workshops at the 

Scottsdale Artists’ School and the Fechin 

Institute in Taos.

Hopex, a Nigeria-born and raised 

artist, has been expressing his 

imagination through pencils and 

pieces of paper since childhood. 

However, it was not until 2017 that he began 

to develop his skills professionally. Hopex’s 

passion for art is driven by his desire to 

tell the stories of his wildest dreams and 

to amplify the voices of those around him, 

particularly within African narratives. 

Hopex is a self-taught artist who was 

encouraged by his peers to pursue portrait 

work. He fell in love with the craft’s ability 

to bring life, exuberance, and color to the 

people and places that colored his world. 

His artwork reflects the vibrant and diverse 

culture of Africa, as he draws inspiration 

from everything and everyone, finding 

beauty and potential in conversation and 

dialogue. 

One of the most striking aspects of 

Hopex’s art is its ability to tackle political 

and sociocultural issues. He uses thick paper 

and charcoal pencils to embolden even 

the most complex topics on the canvasses

How did you get interested in music? Can 

you share a little bit about your journey to 

becoming a successful musician? 

I have to say that I wasn’t initially interested 

in playing music. It was actually my eldest 

brother who played a lot of music at home that 

inspired me to pursue music. One album that 

particularly stood out to me was Nusrat Fateh 

Ali Khan and Michael Brooks’ collaboration, 

which inspired me to do what I’m doing today. 

For me, music provides a unique high that 

cannot be compared to anything else. 

What was the biggest challenge you faced 

when you first started out in the music 

industry, and how did you stay motivated 

to pursue your dreams? 

One of the biggest challenges I faced when I 

first started out in the music industry was the 

release of my album. Maintaining success and 

coming up with one hit after another was not 

an easy task, and it was even more difficult to 

maintain relationships with people in my life 

while pursuing my career. 

How did you handle rejection and criticism 

in the early days of your career, and what 

advice would you give to aspiring musicians 

who are struggling with these issues? 

When it comes to handling rejection and criticism, 

I strongly believe that whatever is meant for 

you will come your way eventually. I never 

paid attention to critics or engaged in negative 

behaviour towards them. Instead, I focused on 

improving myself, my music, and my talents 

to gain appreciation from my audience. For 

aspiring musicians who are struggling with 

these issues, my advice would be to stay true 

to yourself and not let the negativity of others 

affect you. 

Can you tell us about a turning point in your 

career when you knew that you had made 

it as a musician? 

As for a turning point in my career, I’ve never 

really thought that I’ve “made it.” I believe that 

there is always room for improvement and that 

it’s important to challenge oneself constantly to 

grow and improve as a person and musician. 

Can you share a particularly memorable 

experience from one of your live performances 

or tours? 

There are many incidents that I remember, but 

one that comes to mind happened during a 

recent gig in New Jersey. While performing, 

there wasn’t enough light, causing me to fall 

off the stage and leaving me with a scar. It 

took me about 5 seconds to realize I needed 

to go back on stage despite the injury, and 

thankfully the audience didn’t seem to notice. 

Later, I found out that I needed stitches. It’s not 

always easy being a star, despite what some 

may believe. People often think it’s a glamorous 

life, but it can be quite taxing. 

What do you consider to be your biggest 

achievement so far in your music career, 

and what are you most proud of? 

My biggest achievement is the 99 names of 

Allah. My entire career pales in comparison to 

being able to share these names and reach 

such a diverse audience. The impact it has 

had is simply mind-boggling. 

You are known for your charitable work, 

including your support for the Shaukat 

Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital. What 

motivates you to give back to the community, 

and how do you balance your music career 

with your philanthropic efforts? 

It can be difficult to balance my music career 

with my philanthropic efforts, especially since 

some people in the industry may view charity 

as a form of showing off. However, I strongly 

believe in giving back and often choose to 

keep my charitable work hidden. Ultimately, I 

just love making people happy, whether that’s 

through giving money, and time, or simply having 

a conversation with someone. 

You have inspired many people with your 

music and your journey. What message do 

you have for your fans and followers who 

look up to you as a role model, and what 

advice would you give to aspiring musicians 

and artists who are just starting out? 

I would advise fans and followers not to look up 

to me as a role model because I believe personal 

life should be kept private. However, in terms 

of my work, I encourage aspiring musicians 

and artists to work hard, follow their dreams, 

and continue to learn and grow in their craft. 

As long as they’re not hurting anyone and 

are respectful to their parents and have faith, 

they’ll be just fine. 

What advice would you give to your younger 

self if you could go back in time to the 

beginning of your career? 

I wouldn’t change anything because I believe 

everything happens for a reason, and my journey 

has helped me learn and grow as an artist. 

So, my advice to my younger self would be 

to continue living the same life and trusting in 

the path that I was meant to take.

Capturing the soul of human emotions: 

A self-taught painter’s passion for 

storytelling through portraits 

“We all love stories, and it is the ability of the portrait to allow us to weave one. I 

thus invite the viewer to invent their own story in the face of this stolen moment. 

This fugitive moment was taken from the heart of life to capture the similarities 

that resonate within us,” says Agnes. 


Born in 1963 in the suburb of Paris, 

artist Marie-Agnes Robin has 

been living in Quebec for more 

than 30 years. She moved to Terrasse-Vaudreuil, 

where she has been working 

in her home studio for the last few years. 

Agnes has always been interested in 

painting, and her job has allowed her to 

rediscover this passion. Artistic painting is 

now an important part of her life. As a passionate 

and self-taught artist, she started 

by exploring various mediums like collages, 

markers, and pastels. 

“Since my first works, I have dedicated 

a preponderant place to the human being 

in the heart of my paintings. Self-taught, I 

paint portraits that are primarily acrylic and 

in which I insert mixed media (gold leaf or 

collages) in my studio at Terrasse Vaudreuil,” 

says Agnes. 

“It is through the gesture and the transposition 

of the material on the canvas that I 

give a distinctive signature to my new series 

focused on emotions. Using black and 

white for the face, I invite the viewer to enter 

my works to vibrate to the rhythm of the 

colors of their own emotions,” says Agnes. 

These faces, mainly feminine, stand out 

as engines of dialogue with the viewer. The 

presence of the soul is materialized through 

the subject and enhanced by the surrounding 

colors.

Agnes’ questioning of the news about the 

place and respect for women and all vulnerable 

living beings push her to create. Faced 

with a brutal and beautiful external world, 

she aims to present combative and strong 

women while revealing their great inner 

emotional conflict. Often trapped by their 

own feelings, it is a constant tug between 

strength and vulnerability, coldness and 

sensitivity, well-being, and guilt. 

Agnes’ involvement is also ecological: “I 

raise themes such as the disappearance 

of species, the importance of caring for our 

animal world, and the respect every living 

being deserves. I like to create a complicity 

between my portraits and selected animals, 

highlighting the importance of our inter-relationships,” 

says Agnes. 

“What I see on TV, what I read in magazines 

and newspapers, what I experienced 

during my many travels around the 

world and in my private life, and 

other artists, are all sources of 

inspiration to allow me to convey 

an emotion through 

the image that I create to 

arouse a reaction in the 

viewer. Each painting is 

thus a new beginning, 

a new way (voice) to 

express how I feel.”

Since 2010 Jorge Pavon has been the Coordinator 

in the design area of the Cultural Center of Spain in 

Nicaragua. 


Jorge Pavon is an accomplished 

Nicaraguan graphic designer, digital 

artist, and digital collage enthusiast. His 

exceptional skills and unique approach 

have earned him a reputation as one of the 

most talented designers in his country. Pavon’s 

work has been published in several cultural 

magazines, including MarcaAcme, Patadeperro, 

and HECHO magazine. 

Currently, Pavon is a member of the Support 

Committee of the Ibero-American Design Biennial 

(BID) in Madrid, Spain. His project Poster Design 

at the Cultural Center of Spain in Nicaragua 

was selected to exhibit at the third edition of 

the Ibero-American Design Biennial BID held 

in Madrid, Spain. At the event, he received a 

special mention from the jury, highlighting the 

exceptional quality of his work. In 2014, he 

represented Nicaragua with his project Cultural 

Visual Communication in the fourth edition of 

the Ibero-American Design Biennial BID. 

Pavon’s unique approach to design combines 

traditional techniques with modern design tools 

to create original works of art. His passion 

for digital art and design has inspired many 

young designers in Nicaragua, who look up 

to him as a source of inspiration. His work 

is known for its strong cultural influence and 

its reflection of the rich cultural heritage of 

Nicaragua. Pavon’s commitment to promoting 

design and digital art in his home country has 

also played a significant role in inspiring young 

designers and fostering creativity in the region. 

In addition to his design work, Pavon has 

been the Coordinator in the design area of the 

Cultural Center of Spain in Nicaragua since 

2010. In this role, he has played a crucial part 

in promoting cultural visual communication in 

Nicaragua, and his coordination skills have 

helped him make a significant contribution to 

the design field in his home country. His work 

has helped to establish the Cultural Center of 

Spain as a hub for design and digital art in 

Nicaragua, and he has played an instrumental 

role in helping to connect young designers 

with other professionals in the field.

Cimmaron Singh’s ‘Untold 

Stories’ Exhibition shines 

light on cultural diversity 

and the beauty of the 

ordinary 


Indian-born artist of mixed heritage, Cimmaron 

Singh held her inaugural Photography 

exhibition ‘Untold Stories’ in Dubai from 24th 

to 26th February 2023. The exhibition, a 

celebration of cultural diversity and the beauty 

of landscapes, left a lasting impression on all 

who were fortunate enough to attend. Singh’s 

exceptional talent in capturing the essence of 

each moment, the play of light and shadow, 

and the vibrancy of the world around us, was 

a true masterpiece of artistic expression. Her 

captivating photographs left an indelible mark 

on the hearts and minds of the visitors, evoking 

emotions that will linger on for years to come. 

‘Untold Stories’ was a photographic journey 

that captured the artist’s fascination for the play 

of light & shadow, cultural diversity, vibrant 

landscapes and soulful stories behind the 

eyes in her portraits. Singh’s expertise lies 

in capturing the depth of these stories, whilst 

transforming an ordinary moment into the 

extraordinary, forcing the viewer to look deeper 

into each image she captures. 

The exhibition was graced with the presence 

of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak 

Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance 

and Coexistence. His visit to the exhibition 

was a testament to the growing recognition 

of the artist’s work and the significance of her 

contribution to the art community. 

Singh’s exhibition displayed a diverse range 

of photographs, each capturing a unique story 

and reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures that 

make up our world. From the vibrant streets of 

India to the sun-kissed beaches of the UAE, each 

photograph told a story of people, places, and 

experiences that were at once familiar and yet 

imbued with a sense of mystery and wonder. 

One of the most striking features of the 

exhibition was Singh’s masterful use of light 

and shadow to create depth and texture in her 

photographs. Whether it was the soft glow of 

a sunset or the harsh glare of a streetlamp, 

Singh captured the nuances of light in a way 

that made each image come alive. 

But it wasn’t just the technical mastery that 

made Singh’s work so magnificent. It was also the 

way she captured the essence of her subjects,

Creating art that is 

inspired by colour, form 

and emotion 

“Passion is what defines everyone, and painting is 

something which does that for me, watercolour to be 

exact,” says Puja Kumar. 


Puja Kumar is an accomplished Indian 

watercolourist, in addition to being 

a dedicated educator. Now based 

in Faridabad (NCR), India, she cofounded 

the female artists’ collective Opus 

Kala Sanyojan and works as the Country Head 

(India, East) for Fabriano InAquerello. 

The artist found solace in painting, particularly 

in watercolour. Flowers have always fascinated 

her, and she loves to capture their essence 

in her paintings, using bright and intense 

colours to express her moods and feelings. 

She uses analogous colours in her work as 

she believes, “Analogues colours give you the 

sense of balance and serenity. It communicates 

a message of tranquillity.” The artist’s passion 

for art blossomed from a young age but was 

overshadowed by her academic and career 

pursuits. However, she believed that it is never 

too late to pursue what really excites you 

and she decided to rekindle her artistic side. 

In addition, she spent six months studying 

watercolour lessons under the tutelage of 

Tarak Shankar and Praween Karmakar, two of 

India’s celebrated watercolour artists. 

Since then, Puja has been making waves 

in the art world. She has been featured in 

a wide variety of national and international 

group exhibits. Her work has been featured 

in several notable exhibitions, including the 

2016 Spandan International Art Festival, Silent 

Grandeur at AIFACS in New Delhi, the 2017 

Spectrum at Kohinoor Continental in Mumbai, 

and the 2017 International Artist Confest: 

Artist Way to World Peace at KIIT University 

in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She has also been 

a guest artist at a number of prestigious 

international art exhibitions and has attended 

a number of artist camps, seminars, and 

residential watercolour courses. In 2022, Puja 

co-founded Opus Kala Sanyojan, a platform 

for women artists to showcase their work and 

connect with each other. The organization has 

organized several art residential camps for 

women artists in various locations, including 

Kashmir and Khajuraho. Puja’s work has been 

recognized and appreciated by many, and 

she continues to be a source of inspiration for 

aspiring artists. Puja Kumar is a gifted artist 

who has found her calling in watercolour. Her 

passion for art and her dedication to her craft 

have earned her a place in the hearts of art 

lovers around the world. The artist’s inspiring

Can you share details about your background 

and experience within the culinary industry? 

I began my culinary career in Delhi, India, 

where I worked for six to eight years on various 

state foods, including south, west, north, 

east, Deccan, Rajasthani, Punjabi, and other 

Indian cuisines. Starting with the basics of 

Indian cuisine such as curry and Tandoors, I 

learned traditional and authentic Indian dishes 

from amazing chefs. In 2012, I moved to 

Dubai to work with Sanjeev Kapoor and had 

the opportunity to open his first fine dining 

Indian outlet, Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor, at 

the Melia hotel. During this time, I also had the 

privilege to work with Chef Marco Pierre White 

as he opened Titanic by Chef Marco Pierre 

White in the same hotel. Working with these 

celebrity master chefs was a milestone in my 

culinary journey, where I gained knowledge 

about the depth of culinary arts, the operation 

of the art, the importance of ingredients, how 

to make food creative and attractive, and the 

importance of detail in each ingredient. After 

opening my first fine dining Indian outlet, Signature 

by Sanjeev Kapoor with chef Sanjeev 

Kapoor where I got the chance to became the 

executive chef of the hotel as I ran the hotel 

for the next 8 years and I opened multiple cuisines 

here such as Azalea and Sushi Bar, and 

expanded my knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, 

and Wester cuisines. My latest property was in 

The Opus by OMNIYAT in Dubai, a luxurious 

hotel located in Business Bay. It has been over 

12 years since I started my culinary journey in 

Dubai, and I am still sharing my experience 

with different cuisines. 

Can you describe your journey before deciding 

to become a chef? And what career 

would you have chosen if not cooking? 

Before pursuing a career in cooking, I completed 

my education up to diploma level. Initially, 

I never considered becoming a chef. As 

a child, I had a passion for going into detail 

and understanding how things worked, which 

led me to consider becoming a mechanic or a 

doctor. However, my lack of skill and destiny 

prevented me from pursuing either of these 

careers. 

Later, I became drawn to cooking after being 

influenced by my grandmother, who was an 

amazing cook. I was always fascinated by the 

way she could create delicious food using only 

basic ingredients. This fascination led me to 

study culinary art, and I eventually obtained 

a certification from a school in Delhi. 

Now, I work as a chef in various outlets and 

restaurants, and I am currently based in Dubai 

after working with Sanjeev Kapoor. 

Can you explain the concept behind The 

Saffron Boutique? 

The Saffron Boutique is founded on the 

concept of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” which means 

treating guests as gods. We aim to provide a 

welcoming and unforgettable experience for 

our guests. We want to see happy faces and 

smiles, and for them to leave with memories 

of the delicious food we serve. 

Our menu features dishes made using the 

best ingredients, with more than 10-15 spices 

and herbs, creating a full and flavorful taste. 

Our main objective is to use the best talent, 

technique, and memories to give our guests a 

familiar and unforgettable experience. 

How do you blend traditional Indian flavors 

and techniques into your dishes? 

When I plan to add new dishes to my menu, 

especially for Indian cuisine, I always aim to create 

art on the plate. It’s important to incorporate 

traditional spices and never compromise their 

unique flavors. All the spices and ingredients 

should be fresh, and the best techniques, talent, 

and spices should be utilized to make the food 

flavorful and visually appealing. It’s not only 

about looking beautiful, but it should also be

delicious and memorable for the guests. After 

leaving my outlet, guests should talk about the 

food as it creates a lasting experience for them. 

Can you outline your strategy for accommodating 

vegan and plant-based diners? 

As more people are moving towards veganism 

and plant-based food, I’ve added several 

plant-based dishes to my menu. Some 

people think they cannot get the rich protein, 

minerals, or other health benefits from plantbased 

food that they get from meat. However, 

my menu offers plenty of plant-based options 

that are not only healthier but also provide 

more protein and fat than meat-based dishes. 

For example, the Tandoori avocado, roasted

nutrients. I believe that plant-based food can 

offer everything that meat-based food does, 

so it’s worth promoting to attract people who 

want to be vegan. 

Do you believe the popularity of veganism 

will continue to increase? 

The popularity of veganism has been increasing 

over the past few years, and I’ve 

noticed more guests requesting vegan, keto, 

and plant-based options. People care about their 

health and want to be more immune, especially 

after the COVID-19 pandemic. Veganism can 

help strengthen the gut and increase immunity, 

which is important in fighting bacteria and 

illness. The market has seen a lot of people 

transitioning to veganism, and I believe this 

trend will continue. 

How do you keep up with current food trends 

and incorporate them into your menu offerings? 

The food industry is constantly evolving, 

and it is essential to keep up with the latest 

food trends to ensure that your menu remains 

relevant. From modern cuisine to Indian, Western, 

Arabic, and beyond, people are now more 

interested in the appearance of the food as 

well as its taste. However, it is important not to 

sacrifice the traditional flavors of your dishes 

for the sake of presentation. Instead, focus on 

creating an artistic presentation that complements 

the dish’s traditional flavors. By doing so, 

you can create an eye-catching and attractive 

dish that guests will love. 

Can you share a particularly memorable 

dish or experience from your career? 

As a chef, I believe that guests should be 

treated like gods, as per the Indian tradition of 

“Atithi Devo Bhava.” This philosophy is always at 

the forefront of my mind when planning menus 

or creating dishes. One particularly memorable 

experience occurred when I was serving a 

family with dietary restrictions. I took the time 

to understand their needs and desires, and I 

was able to create a meal that met all of their 

requirements. After serving the meal, I was 

touched to see tears of joy in the lady’s eyes, 

and I received compliments and gestures of 

appreciation from her and other guests. It is 

moments like these that make me proud to be 

a chef and to serve others. 

How do you maintain the consistent high 

quality of your dishes?” 

The food industry is rapidly growing, with 

many aspiring chefs eager to make a name for 

themselves. From Master Chefs to young blood, 

chefs are emerging from all over the world, with 

the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, 

Dubai, and India being popular destinations. 

With the rise of social media platforms such 

as TikTok and Instagram, aspiring chefs are 

more determined than ever to enter the field. 

However, many young chefs are too focused 

on achieving top positions, such as head chef 

or executive chef, in a short period of time. 

They lack the patience to learn the basics 

and end up getting stuck in the middle. In 

the past, it was much harder to learn about 

cuisine or food, but nowadays, many colleges 

and training programs offer various degrees, 

diplomas, and courses to help aspiring chefs 

gain the necessary knowledge and skills. 

What advice would you give to aspiring chefs? 

My advice to young chefs is to complete 

their studies before pursuing a career in the 

culinary field. Determine what type of cuisine 

or chef you want to be, and choose your education 

path accordingly. If you want to be an 

Indian or Western chef or a multi-cuisine chef, 

focus on building a strong culinary foundation 

first. Higher education can lead to better job 

prospects and higher salaries. 

Practical experience is essential to becoming 

a skilled chef. You need to spend time practicing 

and honing your skills to become proficient. 

But theory is also important. By completing 

your degree, diploma, or graduation, you will 

gain a deeper understanding of cuisine and 

make practical learning easier. 

In conclusion, if you want to reach your 

goals as a chef, take the time to complete 

your education, gain practical experience, 

and build a strong foundation. This approach 

will help you maintain consistent high-quality 

dishes and achieve your desired position in 

the culinary industry. 

How do you maintain the consistent high 

quality of your dishes? 

To ensure consistency and high quality in 

your dishes, it’s crucial to use the right ingredients, 

techniques, and skills. There’s a myth 

that using expensive items will increase costs, 

but I’ve proven this wrong by consistently using 

high-quality, high-priced food in my cuisine. 

Providing guests with a high-quality food menu 

results in fewer complaints and higher feedback, 

positive energy, and trust. Believing in 

the food you serve and trusting in your guests’ 

satisfaction will lead to well-cooked meals and 

a happy dining experience. 

What message would you like to convey to 

readers of Magzoid Magazine? 

As the executive chef at Gourmet Hospitality’s 

Saffron Boutique, I want readers to know that 

we serve the best quality Pan Indian cuisine. 

We aim to make our guests happy, create 

memories that they can cherish, and fulfill their 

needs. Trusting us means that they can dine 

with confidence and share their experiences 

with others. Cooking has been my passion for 

almost 18 years, and I know that good food 

creates happiness. 

The food industry has evolved, and now 

people want to see art on their plates before 

eating. To balance this concept, we leave art 

on the plate, not the food itself. While keeping 

traditional flavors in mind, I try to keep 

things engaging and surprising for our guests. 

Aesthetics are important, and I strive to make 

each dish visually appealing and delicious. 

As someone who has worked in the industry 

for 17 years, I’ve learned about the depth of 

different cuisines and have tried over 70% of 

the world’s cuisine. My eagerness to learn continues, 

and I prioritize growth by working with 

master and good chefs, maintaining hygiene 

in the kitchen, and continuously expanding my 

culinary knowledge. I aim to learn more about 

Asian and Latin American cuisines and travel 

the world to bring new and exciting concepts

anniversary of the establishment of UAE-Japan relations. 

The exhibition, supported by the Sankei Shimbun newspaper 

and Kimi Makishima Akai, included 25 photographs depicting 

lifestyle in Dubai in the 1960s, taken by Japanese photojournalist 

Yoshio Kashima of the Sankei Shimbun newspaper during a visit 

to Dubai and the Middle East region.

ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS 

The Heydar Aliyev Center is an important cultural centre 

in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, housed in an iconic 

building designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It is located 

in a 10-hectare public park close to the Baku Convention 

Center. 

The centre takes its name from Heydar Aliyev (1923 – 2003), 

the national leader of Azerbaijan who is considered to be 

the founder of modern Azerbaijan. 

The centre is famous for its fluid shape, which the architects 

intended as a reaction to the rigid architecture of the Soviet 

era as well as a reference to Islamic calligraphy and elements 

of traditional Azeri architecture. 

Spanning eight levels, the array of column-free functional 

spaces of the centre is enclosed by a free-form curvilinear 

envelope made in Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete and 

Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester.

ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS 

The building of the Fondation Louis Vuitton is sited within the Jardin 

d’Acclimatation, a children-and-family-oriented garden part of the 

Bois de Boulogne – an 846-hectare public park created in the mid- 

19th century in the sixteenth arrondissement of Paris. 

Gehry’s design was inspired by both the traditional 19th-century glassand-steel 

greenhouse architecture, and the image of a “sailing ship”. 

It is characterized by twelve large glass-and-steel “sails” enveloping 

a core, named “The Iceberg”, made in white Ultra-High-Performance 

Fiber-Reinforced Concrete. 

The Foundation’s building contains 11 galleries, storage areas, 

offices, education spaces, a museum store, a restaurant, and an 

auditorium – a concert hall which can accommodate from 350 to 1000 

people depending on its configuration. A basin was also created 

around the Foundation to emphasize its dynamic forms and vessellike 

appearance.
