LOCAL NEWS
Premier’s election pledge
$5 million boost for local Maronite community if Liberals win State Election
ELLIE BUSBY
As the NSW Liberal Party continues to
fight to keep Parramatta blue ahead
of the State Election, NSW Premier
Dominic Perrottet has made another visit to
the seat to pledge an investment in the local
Maronite community.
If re-elected, the NSW Government has
promised $5 million to assist the growing
Maronite community in Parramatta. The
funding would go towards supporting the
continued refurbishment and upgrade of the
Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral precinct
in Harris Park.
The Maronite College is also set to receive
an additional $100,000 for the installation
of solar panels, to help reduce the school’s
energy bills and make it more environmentally
sustainable.
Perrottet visited Our Lady of Lebanon
Co-Cathedral in Harris Park to make the
announcement, before he dropped by the
Maronite College of the Holy Family, where
students waving the Australian flag gave the
NSW Premier a very warm welcome.
Perrottet said the Maronite community have
always been a “passionate” group of people
and that the additional funding will help the
tens of thousands of Maronite community
members who visit the Harris Park area.
“These facilities are a critical community
Lebanon Co-Cathedral. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
hub, and our investment will help the Parish
accommodate the growing Maronite community,”
he said.
Also visiting the sites was Minister for
Multiculturalism Mark Coure, who said the
Maronite community has “always contributed”
to the state since the 1800s to make it a
great place to live.
“Whether it be through charities, community
organisations or volunteering, the Maronite
community is a remarkable representation of
our multicultural and multi-faith society, and
this is our investing back,” he said.
NSW Liberal Candidate for Parramatta Katie
Mullens called the funding a “big win” for the
local Maronite community.
“Only the Perrottet Liberal Government has
a plan and vision to help support our growing
communities,” Mullens said.
“Our strong economic management allows
us to invest in community facilities and
services for our community, with the experience
and leadership needed to make sure they
are delivered.
“The Maronites have played a huge part in
Parramatta’s history and development. This
investment will help realise our vision for this
important community precinct.”
Bishop of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy
of Saint Maron of Sydney Antoine-Charbel
Tarabay also welcomed the announcement
from the Premier.
“Funding will help us to continue serving
the Maronite community in Harris Park and
surrounds, and will enable us to meet the
needs of our growing community,” he said.
Labor’s candidate for Parramatta Donna
Davis was contacted for comment but no
response was received by the deadline.
Life bans not the answer to racism
Now that emotions have been tempered a
little in the wake of last week’s racism drama
surrounding South Sydney star Latrell Mitchell
at Penrith, can we accept that banning a
teenage boy from rugby league games for life
would be over the top in the extreme?
There is no place for racism in rugby league,
or in any area of life for that matter. It continues
to baffle me that we deal with such matters
in 2023, yet here we are.
Indeed, Mitchell should not come to Penrith
and be subjected to what is alleged to have
happened last Thursday night. That, surely, we
can all agree on.
And it is understandable that emotions were
Guest Columnist
Liberal Candidate for Parramatta
My name is Katie Mullens and I’m the local
Liberal Candidate for the state seat of Parramatta.
I have lived in Parramatta most of my adult
life.
Parramatta is my home and I am passionate
about this electorate.
I am the first person in my family to get a
university degree. I grew up in a small country
town and moved to Parramatta to study law
at our local university and build my future.
Since graduating, I have worked as a lawyer
at a North Parramatta firm, helping local residents,
families, and small businesses. Working
to help the local community has been
really inspiring, and helped motivate me to
put my hand up as the Liberal candidate for
Parramatta.
My desire is to be a true advocate and representative
for the community. Working as a
lawyer has given me a lived grass roots experience
in the community and I know this will
translate well to representing the community
on as broader scale.
Parramatta is a wonderful place to live and I
have seen the transformation of this city and
electorate since it became a Liberal held seat
in 2011. Our current local Member Geoff Lee
through the NSW Liberal Party has delivered
high in the 24 hours that followed the incident
at the foot of the Mountains.
On the night, Souths coach Jason Demetriou
erupted in support of his player, and called
for a life ban for the individual who allegedly
made the remark.
The next day, NRL CEO Andrew Abdo labelled
the incident unacceptable and said action
would be taken.
The rugby league fan base, and the wider
community, also piled on, with this ‘life ban’
term continually thrown about.
A ‘life ban’ is the easy way out of the scenario
and a robotic response to dealing with such
issues.
Katie Mullens
record billions of dollars in transformative
projects and infrastructure to Parramatta,
including things like the Stadium which is
bringing crowds and business to Parramatta.
The Liberal Party continues to deliver to the
community in an exciting and innovative way.
There are so many works in the pipeline that
I am excited to see completed, such as Parramatta
Light Rail Stages 1 and 2, the Metro,
Powerhouse, investment into Westmead Hospital,
upgrades to the Riverside Theatres and
more.
One of the greatest things about Parramatta
is our community. It’s warm and welcoming,
embracing so many who come here from all
over Australia and the world. Our diversity is
something to be celebrated and a re-elected
Liberal government will be doing just that. We
have announced $10 million dollars in additional
security for places of worship, schools
and other buildings that display religious
icons. We will invest $5 million to assist the
Maronite community by supporting the continued
refurbishment and upgrade of Our
Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral precinct! We
will invest into the Maronite College will also
receive an additional $100,000 for the installation
This is a sport that welcomes back into its
fold convicted criminals, and bans drug users
who impact the integrity of the sport for just a
few years, not life.
It would be hypocritical then, surely, to issue
a life ban to a spectator for a remark he allegedly
made; a remark that is disgraceful in the
extreme, but certainly not up there with some
rugby league ‘crimes’ of the past.
Rugby league is a sport that prides itself on
education and second chances.
Just because a ‘life ban’ sounds like the right
language to use to make it loud and clear
you’re against what happened, does not mean
it’s the right course of action.
Why you should give me a chance
work to recognise and revitalise Little India
Harris Park as a cultural precinct through a
$1 million investment. As part of this commitment
a NSW Government application will be
made to the Geographical Names Board to officially
recognise Marion Street, Wigram Street
and Station Street East as ‘Little India’ in the
first month of a new term. I am excited to be
part of a team that places value on our multicultural
society and invests in it.
The top issue that comes up most of the time
when I’m out in the community is people’s
worries about their economic security. Increasing
rates, inflation and global economic
uncertainty is having an impact on our businesses
and family budgets. This is why I think
one of the most important challenges facing
the Government is steering our economy and
keeping it strong. The Perrottet Government
has introduced a range of practical support
to ease pressure on family’s budgets, including
Toll Relief, Back to School vouchers and
an energy saver scheme that will reduce your
electricity bill by $250.
On March 25 2023 I seek your support to give
me the opportunity to continue the good work
of Geoff Lee, and also to be a new strong advocate
for the community. Give me a chance – I
will not let you down.
Westmead scores clinic
New urgent care clinic at Westmead to help ease pressure on “overworked” staff
ELLIE BUSBY
The Federal Government has
announced a new urgent care centre
will be located in Westmead to help
relieve the pressure on emergency departments.
As part of Prime Minister Anthony
Albanese’s Federal Election promise, 14 out
of 50 new urgent care centres are set to make
NSW its new home, including one at Westmead
Hospital.
Open for extended hours seven days a
week, the Medicare urgent care clinics will
provide bulk billed treatment for urgent but
non-life-threatening emergencies.
Designed to help patients get timely,
high-quality healthcare, the urgent care
clinics will look to ease the rising pressure on
NSW hospitals.
The announcement comes after the Bureau
of Health Information (BHI) released its latest
Healthcare Quarterly report, revealing that
emergency departments experienced “near
record demand” from October to December
2022.
At Westmead Hospital only 37 per cent
of patients received treatment on time, a
decrease of 12.5 per cent compared to the
same quarter in the previous year, with
semi-urgent or non-urgent presentations
making up 32 per cent of all presentations at
Westmead will get a new urgent care clinic to help ease some of the pressure on Westmead
Hospital’s emergency department. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
the emergency department.
The report also revealed 29 per cent of
patients who arrived at Westmead Hospital’s
emergency department waited over 30
minutes to be transferred into care of emergency
department staff.
Federal Member for Parramatta, Dr Andrew
Charlton said an urgent care clinic in Westmead
will help take some of the pressure off
overworked and overstretched emergency
department staff.
“This clinic will help relieve some of the
immense pressure in the emergency department
at one of Australia’s biggest hospitals,
Westmead Hospital,” he said.
“With an Urgent Care Clinic in Westmead,
we will see some of the pressure ease and wait
times decrease while helping make sure those
who need non-serious urgent treatment get it
better and sooner.”
Medicare urgent care clinics will also be
established in other key areas, including
Penrith, Blacktown and Campbelltown.
An Expression of Interest (EOI) will be run by
from March 2 to help inform the location of
these urgent care clinics, with submissions
set to close on April 12.
Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark
Butler said Medicare urgent care clinics
are just one way the Federal Government is
“ensuring Australians get the medical care
they need when they need it”.
He added that the Federal Government is
committed to having the urgent care clinics
across Australia operating this year.
LOCAL NEWS
Mums and babies stay together
thanks to new Westmead project
ELLIE BUSBY
Pregnant women and new mothers
suffering from mental illnesses will
soon have access to specialist care
without fear of being separated from their
babies, thanks to Westmead Hospital’s new
unit.
The state’s second purpose-built Mother
and Baby Unit (MBU) is expected to be fully
operatable at Westmead Hospital as of next
month.
The new facility is designed to keep families
together when a mother requires hospitalisation
for a severe perinatal mental illness.
Based at Redbank House, the eight bed unit
will be staffed by specialist perinatal health
professionals who can attend to the mental
health needs of the mother, as well as facilitate
appropriate care of the baby and promote
positive mother-baby interactions.
The new unit will enable up to 120 women
each year to receive specialist multi-disciplinary
mental health care providing access
to maternity, obstetric, paediatric and other
medical services.
Professor Bill Brakoulias, Mental Health
Executive Director at Western Sydney Local
Health District, said the Westmead MBU
is a welcome addition to the mental health
services delivered in western Sydney.
Dominic Perrottet, Bronnie Taylor and Katie Mullens at the opening
of the new unit. Photo: Toby Zerna.
“Greater western Sydney is a rapidly growing
region with the highest birth rate in NSW,”
Brakoulias said.
“The proportion of women receiving antenatal
care in the first trimester is high and
regular antenatal care is associated with
better maternal health in pregnancy, fewer
interventions in late pregnancy and positive
child health outcomes.”
The service will be available to western
Sydney residents, as well as those from other
metro, rural and regional areas in NSW.
Each bedroom is large enough to accommodate
a mother, their baby and a partner,
and has been specially designed to meet
different levels of care, as well as to create a
family-friendly environment.
The unit will also offer patients a landscaped
outdoor area for exercise, relaxation
and family visits and will also include space
and equipment for antenatal care, a 24-hour
respite nursery, a parent craft room, a retreat
room and consultation and group therapy
rooms.
The outdoor area in the new Mother and Baby Unit at Westmead
Hospital.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, Minister
for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor and Liberal
Candidate for Parramatta Katie Mullens
recently visited the new facility and the unit’s
specialist team.
“This is an important next step in mental
health services for the Parramatta area,”
Mullens said.
“It’s investments like this which make a
huge difference [to ensure] the current and
future healthcare needs of the Parramatta
and broader community are met.”
LOCAL NEWS
Darley makes a splash
Parramatta Councillor takes to the pool for Laps for Life fundraising initiative
ELLIE BUSBY
A
Parramatta Councillor is swimming
to save lives this month as part of the
Laps for Life fundraiser.
Throughout March, local Councillor Kellie
Darley will be diving into Epping Aquatic
Centre to help make sure young people in
Australia have the mental health support they
urgently need.
Kicking off her Laps for Life fundraiser,
Darley will be raising vital funds for Reach
Out.
Anonymous and confidential, ReachOut
is a safe place that provides a wide range of
support options that allow young people to
engage in the ways they want to, when they
want to.
With more than one in three young people
experiencing mental health difficulties, and
suicide remaining the leading cause of death
for young Australians aged 16 to 24, Darley
knew Laps for Life was something she had to
get involved with.
“I was shocked when I found out how many
young people die every year from suicide,”
Darley told Parra News.
“I’ve been swimming for my own mental
health and for exercise at Epping Pool and I
just thought [Laps for Life] was a great way to
raise awareness of the need for more mental
health services for young people.”
Kellie Darley is taking part in the Laps for Life fundraiser.
Darley has committed to swimming an
average of 10 laps a day, which will be about
15km in total for the month. And although
she said she’s feeling quite sore from all the
swimming, Darley has found it has already
significantly helped with her own mental
health.
“It’s just lovely, particularly the Epping Pool,
to spend half an hour, 40 minutes, in the water
for just some down time from everything else
going on,” she said.
“I’ve let my health go, which can happen
particularly as a mum and being a new Councillor,
and there’s not enough hours in the day
so I really wanted to prioritise my health this
year and at the same time raise money for a
really great cause.”
Having already surpassed her initial
fundraising target of $600, Darley has been
amazed at the support she has received from
the community so far.
She’s now encouraging more people to help
save lives by donating to her fundraiser to
improve mental health services for young
people.
“These are preventable deaths, 400 kids
every year and you think about all the families..
I would hate to be a parent who loses
their child to suicide, it would just be horrific,”
she said.
“So, even just starting that conversation
[and] people being aware of the services
available, particularly parents whose kids are
moving into their teenage years and just what
helps there, is all really important.”
Volcano’s set for major facelift Call to address work shortages
ELLIE BUSBY
An artist’s impression of the proposed new look for Volcano’s Steakhouse.
Image: Faculty Design.
ELLIE BUSBY
Popular Parramatta restaurant Volcano’s
Steakhouse is set for a major
facelift, with new additions on its
way.
Known for its fresh flavours and quality
dishes, Volcano’s Steakhouse has recently
lodged plans with the City of Parramatta for
a whole new look.
If the Development Application (DA) is
approved, the steakhouse would receive a
new fit out of the existing seating area and
minor cosmetic changes to the façade of the
restaurant. The changes would see a slight
decrease in seats from 90 to 84.
The new look has been designed by Faculty
Design, a team of designers who specialise
in retail and hospitality. The Statement of
Environmental Effects said the proposed
upgrades have been designed in a way that
complements the location and will not create
an eye sore to the surrounding area.
Located at 311 Church Street, Volcano’s
Steakhouse Parramatta is locally owned
and operated. Its menu is full of classic
steakhouse favourites, from T-bone to
porterhouse. Visitors to the restaurant are
also able to enjoy ordering from a range of
burgers, ribs, salads and chicken dishes.
The DA comes after businesses along
Parramatta’s Church Street were heavily
impacted by COVID, as well as by the
construction of the Light Rail, with many
reporting a decrease among their patronage.
Business NSW, the peak policy and
advocacy body that represents NSW
businesses, is calling on the State
and Federal Government to improve international
students’ work hours.
In January 2022, student work visa restrictions
were completely removed to allow
primary and secondary student visa holders
to work over their normal limit of 40 hours
per fortnight, in an effort to address workforce
shortages.
As of July 1 these restrictions will return
for student visa holders, but capped at the
increased rate of 48 hours per week.
A further change means selected new and
existing international graduate visa holders
will also now be eligible to work for four years
post-graduation, an increase from two years.
Although Business NSW welcomes these
changes, CEO Dan Hunter said more still
needs to be done to address workforce shortages.
“With a record number of job vacancies
in NSW, nine in 10 businesses are unable to
recruit staff they need to keep their doors
open,” Hunter said.
“We’ve all heard about businesses being
forced to close early, reduce their trading
days or shut their doors completely because
they don’t have enough staff.
“With businesses already juggling interest
rate rises, ballooning energy costs and supply
chain problems, labour shortage relief would
be more than welcome.”
As part of its ‘We Mean Business’ election
campaign, Business NSW is now urging
the State and Federal Government to work
Business NSW CEO Dan Hunter said more
needs to be done to fix the worker shortage.
together to expand the NSW Skilled Visa
Nomination program from 15,000 to at least
30,000 places.
“Businesses need to be able to operate
without being handcuffed by a people and
skills shortage,” Hunter said.
The ‘We Mean Business’ policy platform
represents the collective views of businesses,
representing industries, sectors and economies
right across the state of NSW.
TURNING BACK TIME
This throwback to James
Ruse Agricultural High
School was taken in the
1960s! The photo captures
the young boys as they
participate in a school council
session.
James Ruse Agricultural
High School is one of four
agricultural high schools in
NSW established in 1959 as a
boys’ high school offering the
opportunity for metropolitan
students to study agriculture
as part of their secondary
school studies.
The prestigious school
became co-educational in
1977 and is the one agricultural
high school that operates
for day students only.
James Ruse Agricultural
High School was recently
named the best ranked
school in western Sydney
for its NAPLAN results, as
well as the number one high
school in NSW for the HSC for
the 27th consecutive year.
Having never cruised before, I will
admit that I may have assumed
that cruise ships were full of older
people playing bingo but as I found myself at
a nightclub on Deck 18 at 1am that pre-conceived
notion was quickly overcome.
Taking it back a step to when I was invited
to board P&O’s Pacific Adventure for a fournight
getaway to Moreton Island, I never
could have imagined how much is on offer on
each level of what is essentially a floating hotel
and resort.
Following over 2,600 lanyard wearing
guests, I was quick to grab the first of many
strawberry daiquiris and head to the sail away
party where we witnessed the stunning sight
of barely scraping under the Sydney Harbour
Bridge.
With 21 dining options available there is a
lot to try, and 400 Gradi by award-winning
Melbourne chef Johnny Di Francesco was
a delicious choice to load up on authentic
Italian before setting out to discover all the
different and stylishly designed corners of the
ship, including one of the stage shows on each
night.
TRAVEL
P&O PACIFIC ADVENTURE
Words: Emily Feszczuk | Photos: Supplied | More Info: www.pocruises.com.au
“I NEVER COULD HAVE
IMAGINED HOW MUCH IS
ON OFFER ON EACH LEVEL
OF WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY
A FLOATING HOTEL AND
RESORT”
After a peaceful sleep with the newfound
sensation of being gently rocked by the
ocean, we took in the vast blue view from our
comfortable balcony room and then went up
to the main deck to see it in all its glory.
The seasoned travellers set up on their deck
chairs early and it is easy to see how people
can spend their whole holiday in the Oasis
adults only pool area or the Magrodome
family area, not to mention the dual racing
waterslides which were a hit for everyone,
regardless of age.
Wanting to immerse myself in the experience,
I bought my bingo tickets, my lucky
dabber and as I joined a full lively theatre, I
discovered how fun it is thinking you are just
one legs 11 away from winning a cash prize
(spoiler – I didn’t win).
The rest of the afternoon was spent by taking
a cocktail class in a charming hole-in-thewall
bar, getting some lunch from The Pantry
which has a range of cuisines in a buffet style
and spending more time screaming than
taking in the view as I (reluctantly) ziplined
across the top of the ship, which is a must do
for adrenaline seekers.
The Gatsby themed night saw as equally as
many feather boas as a Harry Styles concert
and it was the perfect attire to witness the
very cheeky and cabaret style show – Blanc de
Blanc, Uncorked!
After some more delicious drinks, and a late
comedy show we found ourselves at the Altitude
nightclub which parties all night long but
is a convenient easy walk back to your room.
Trying to fit in every session of trivia and
karaoke at the Adventure hotel meant that
a day of relaxation was needed which came
when we had a shore day where people
ventured out to Tangalooma Island Resort.
Taking advantage of a noticeably quieter
ship, we spent the day at the Byron Beach
Club which is a private access area for guests
booking into suites.
Swimming, sunning ourselves, and playing
games like connect four was perfect before we
headed out to explore the island on a tender
and took in the magnitude of the Pacific
Adventure from the shoreline.
Our shore excursion was one we will not
forget where a pod of wild dolphins came
up to us in the shallows at sunset to be fed
and marvelled at (and marvel I
certainly did).
The white themed Bianco party
was a blast, and the sea days
became a blur of more bingo,
listening to live music and watching
groups of friends and families
relaxing and enjoying the wonderful
atmosphere and phenomenal
service given by the 1100 members
of cheerful crew.
There is so much included within
a cruise package with shows and
complimentary restaurants but
adding on a hot stone massage at
the Elemis at Sea Spa and dinner
at celebrity chef Luke Mangan’s
bar and grill will leave you wanting
more.
Sitting down for a drink with
P&O Cruise Director Sam Austin,
he summed up
why cruise
ships prove to be a popular holiday
choice for all generations.
“I’ve worked in the cruise industry
for eight years and there has
been a huge stigma about cruising
being for old people but that is
changing with adults only cruise
lines, we do themed cruises and
P&O did the first ever pride cruise
in Australia which was insane,”
Austin said.
“We have a night club, loud music
venues, quiet places you can sit
to relax, a variety of shows with
talented performers, fun activities
and incredible kids centres that
cater for the young ones so make
sure to experience as much as you
can.”
With endless food, drinks and
activities, if you have never hit the
seas before or if you are a cruise
veteran, make sure to get down the
gangway of a P&O liner.
Blue Mountains Painting is an award winning painting and decorating company. We pride
the size of the job, and always strive to work with the local community and support our local
The Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Neptune
are all stimulating your cash
zone. Letting finances take their own
course seems tempting but you need
to keep up to speed with money matters.
If you increase your financial literacy
then it will pay off handsomely
further down the track, as you replace
short-term whims with wise longterm
strategies. Slow down on Thursday
and Friday, otherwise you could
do something rash or say something
stupid.
Perceptive Pisceans have an uncanny
sixth sense and you’ll be using
it in spades as the Sun, Mercury,
Saturn and Neptune all meander
through your sign. You’ll feel increasingly
inspired, compassionate and/or
spiritually inclined. So it’s the perfect
time to break out the paint brushes,
dance in the moonlight, help someone
in need or explore a new spiritual
practice. The Sun/Mercury/Neptune
hook-ups particularly highlight creativity
and healing.
This week Mars (your power planet)
squares Neptune, the Sun and Mercury.
Which could confuse your mind,
fire up your temper and increase your
impatience. Rational, reasonable
Rams will simmer down, take a few
deep breaths, and transform your exasperation
into red hot creativity and
vigorous physical activity. Wisdom for
the week is from birthday great, lawyer
and jurist Ruth Bader Ginsburg, “You
can disagree without being disagreeable.”
Venus (your ruler) shifts into Taurus,
so you’ll be at your flirtatious best as
you charm the cynics and dazzle the
doubters. If you’re attached, it’s time
to rejuvenate the relationship with
some good old-fashioned romance.
Single Bulls – you could meet your
soul mate while you’re doing routine
daily chores … like grocery shopping
or walking the dog. But watch your
luxury-loving urge to splurge doesn’t
spin out of control via a spontaneous
spending spree.
With gung-ho Mars still in Gemini,
your quicksilver energy is firing on all
cylinders this week. The Sun, Mercury,
Saturn and Neptune also set the
stage for a career upgrade. (But your
tendency to over-talk and over-share
could get you into trouble – especially
if you spread gossip.) When it comes
to a difficult professional relationship,
you may feel as if you’re going backwards.
Compromise and patience
will set you on the road to a satisfying
long-term solution.
With no less than six planets activating
your career and aspirations zones,
it’s time to have ambitious dreams
and set humongous goals. Stop procrastinating
and instead, ask yourself
an important question. “Do I need
to tweak my dreams to make them
a more honest reflection of the real
me?” Believe in yourself, be authentic
and reach for the stars! But you
may feel rather crabby on Thursday
and Friday when Mars inflames your
moods and shortens your patience.
This week the Sun (your patron
planet) links up with Neptune in the
gentle, mystical sign of Pisces. So slow
down and calm down Cats! Tap into
your imaginative, intuitive, spiritual
side. Dream a special dream that will
propel you into a magical future. And
aim to surround yourself with family
and friends who support and encourage
your aspirations. So your motto
is from birthday great, actress Glenn
Close, “Be aware of your inner voice
and follow it.”
Attached Virgo – is your relationship
stuck in a time-warp where it’s been
difficult to move forward? This week’s
stars bring a shift in perspective, as
you view your lover in a promising
(and realistic) new light. Single Virgo
– are you sick and tired of looking for
love? Your Prince or Princess is waiting
in the wings, but you may have to
kiss a few frogs before you finally find
them! Friday night favours friendships
and romantic declarations in the
moonlight.
With lucky Venus and prosperous
Jupiter in your partnership zone, this
week is all about cosy companionship,
inspired collaboration and generous
joint ventures. The more you focus
on the needs of loved ones (and the
more you cooperate with others) the
happier everyone will be. However –
with Mars increasing your impatience
– take extra care when driving, travelling
and talking (don’t speed, double-check
your itinerary, and don’t
pass on garrulous gossip).
You’ll feel more inspired than usual,
as the planets stimulate your self-expression
zone. Use the power of your
imagination to solve problems and
soar into higher realms of creativity.
Your motto for the week is from
birthday great Albert Einstein, “Logic
will get you from A to B. Imagination
will take you everywhere.” Love and
friendship are favoured on Thursday,
and the weekend’s a great time to organise
a neighbourhood get-together
or a romantic rendezvous.
Are you confused about which path
to follow in the future? Pay close attention
to your nightly dreams. They
are full of creative ideas and symbolic
wisdom that can lead you in the right
direction. Painters, artists, writers,
musicians and performers will feel
particularly inspired as Venus, Jupiter
and Saturn boost creativity and
productivity. Some Sagittarians will
bump into a lover from the past. But
do you really want to travel down that
rocky road again?
Family matters and domestic DIY
projects are favoured this week, as
lucky Venus and prosperous Jupiter
navigate their way through your home
zone. Can you figure out a problem
that has loved ones stymied? They’re
expecting you to come up with the
goods so get creative! For many Capricorns,
luck and family are linked.
You’ll also find the more time and effort
you put into education, communication
and social media, the more
successful you’ll be.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
FROM
TIKTOK TO
THE JOAN
CASSIDY PEARCE
Having clocked up almost a million
followers across his social
media platforms, 21-year-old
Blake Pavey is no stranger to
the spotlight. But, in wanting
to avoid being labelled a ‘TikTokker’ for the
rest of his life, he set his sights on the city.
“I started on TikTok when I was in Year 11,
so then after I moved to Melbourne from
the country, I thought I better try and do
something else,” he told Parra News.
It was there that Pavey met fellow
comedian Luke Kidgell, who similarly
got his start on Tik-
Tok. Having
opened for
Kidgell last
year on his
tour, Pavey
assures that his
success so far has nothing to do
with his talent – just a bit of luck.
“I always knew that I wanted to do standup
after doing TikTok, but the scale it’s gotten
to now has been really surprising. The
response has been absolutely insane so far,”
he said.
“I guess I got pretty lucky to meet Luke
and all that, and they helped me get started,
and then took me on the road for his tour.
It’s been a pretty quick shortcut into getting
into my own tour.”
Many would know Pavey from his content
surrounding his diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis
(CF) – a life-threatening disorder that
primarily damages the lungs and digestive
system. It’s for this reason that the name of
the show, ‘Literally Dying’, may not come as
a surprise.
“A lot of my stuff in the show this year is
about CF and all my health issues, which I
think is a little bit different to what people
might have seen in the past, compared to
especially Internet dudes who have done
stand-up shows in the past,” he said.
“Even after my shows with Luke, people
were really connected to the stuff about CF,
so I think that’s been the major draw card so
far.”
Pavey assures that the show will be more
than an hour-long sob story, taking on the
topic of how he’s used humour to cope with
the tough stuff, and introducing himself
properly to an audience who may have only
ever seen him through a screen.
“I’m excited to do the show and introduce
myself in a whole new light,” he said.
“I think it’ll give people a better idea of the
fact that I’m more than just that TikTok comedian,
which is something that I’m really
excited about.”
Having just kicked off his tour in Ballarat,
Pavey will be heading back to The Joan in
Penrith on Tuesday, March 28, after opening
for Kidgell there last year. Despite his aim to
become known outside of TikTok, Pavey is
hoping the show will help him come back to
his roots.
“Penrith was great [last time], I got one of
my first viral stand-up clips out of Penrith,
so hopefully they can do the same again
when I come back,” he said.
Blake Pavey’s ‘Literally Dying’ will be on
at The Joan in Penrith on Tuesday, March
28 at 6.30pm. Tickets are $40. For more
information or to book, visit thejoan.com.
NEW GEMS
AND ALL
THE HITS
CASSIDY PEARCE
After being postponed last year,
Emmy winning and multi Grammy
nominated artist Toni Childs has
announced her return to The Joan later this
month.
‘The Toni Childs Retrospective’ is a special
two-hour performance, which celebrates
both the old and the new when it comes to
her musical works. The show will see Childs
perform hits and fan favourites from ‘Union’,
‘House of Hope’, ‘The Woman’s Boat’ and
‘Keep the Faith’, before introducing songs
from her new albums, ‘It’s All a Beautiful
Noise’ and ‘Citizens of the Planet’.
The latter two albums will be part of a
very special sea change for Childs in the
next few years, being part of two unique 3D
Mapping animated shows – two hours of
music, animation and high tech audience
engagement.
Childs will also be offering a once in a lifetime
experience in the Exclusive VIP Meet
and Greet Package, which will see 15 lucky
audience members receive one concert
CASSIDY PEARCE
Formed in 1982, Pseudo Echo have
long been one of Australia’s most
iconic new wave bands. Now, after a
three-year hiatus, they’re returning to the
stage, bringing their epic national tour to
Blue Mountains Theatre.
Despite being best known for their cover
of ‘Funky Town’, Pseudo Echo pioneered
the ‘80s with their avant-garde look and
electro sound, introducing audiences to a
new sound in an era of pub rock and making
history as the first unrecorded band to
appear on ABC’s ‘Countdown’.
The Ultimate Tour will see some of their
greatest hits, such as classics from ‘Autumnal
Park’ and ‘Love An Adventure’, and feature
tracks from the controversial, yet much
loved stadium rock ‘Race’ album, performed
live on stage with a six-piece line-up, fronted
by founding member Brian Canham.
Some of these songs haven’t been
performed since their release, so for fans of
the band, this show is not to be missed!
If you enjoy your classic ‘80s music and
want to transport yourself back to the iconic
decade, then round up your friends and
book your tickets fast!
‘Pseudo Echo Ultimate Tour’ will be on
at Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood
on Friday, March 24 at 8pm. Tickets are
$65. For more information or to book, visit
TV NEWS
Ê One of the surprising bits of news to
come through this week was confirmation
that ‘Shark Tank’ would be returning to 10
later this year. It’s unbelievably been five
years since we last saw the series, which
brings together five business superstars, who
put their own cash on the line to try and turn
the next big idea into a profitable venture.
When ‘Shark Tank’ last screened in 2018,
the ‘Sharks’ included Steve Baxter, Janine
Allis, Andrew Banks, Naomi Simson and Glen
Richards. No word on the new line-up yet.
Ê 10 has confirmed Melissa Leong and
international chef Amaury Guichon as judges
for ‘MasterChef: Dessert Masters’. Offering
$100,000 in prize money, the ‘short run’
series is expected to feature well-known
names in pastry, desserts and all things
sweet. ‘MasterChef: Dessert Masters’ will air
later this year.
Ê Former ‘Sunrise’ host Sam Armytage has
been confirmed as the new host of ‘Farmer
Wants A Wife’. Channel Seven have already
started airing promos for the series, which is
expected to air after Easter. Long-time host
MARCH 17
BOSTON STRANGLER, DISNEY +
MASTERCHEF: DESSERT MASTER, CHANNEL 10
Natalie Gruzlewski will still be involved but
in a scaled back role.
Ê Highly anticipated SBS series ‘Alone Australia’
will premiere with a double episode on
Wednesday, March 29 at 7.30pm. The 11-part
series sees 10 Australian survivalists dropped
in the Tasmanian wilderness, completely
isolated from the world and each other,
stripped of modern possessions, contact and
comforts, to self-document their experience
– the last one standing takes home $250,000.
It’s a shame it’s on SBS because this sounds
like a show not to be missed!
Ê ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’, a live-action reimagining
of the J.M. Barrie novel and the 1953
animated classic, will screen next month on
Disney+. ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ introduces
Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave
her childhood home behind, who meets Peter
Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside
her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell,
she travels with Peter to the magical world of
Neverland. There, she encounters an evil pirate
captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on
a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will
change her life forever. Starring Jude Law as
Captain Hook, ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ drops on
Friday, April 28.
Ê Still on Disney+ and the streamer has
just released the trailer for new film ‘Boston
Strangler’, which is set to be released this
Friday, March 17. The film follows Loretta
McLaughlin (Keira Knightley), a reporter
for the Record-American newspaper, who
becomes the first journalist to connect the
Boston Strangler murders. The trailer is a
beauty!
Ê Huge news for fans of ‘Billions’ this week
with confirmation that Damian Lewis will
return for the seventh season of the finance
drama. The show hasn’t quite been the same
since the abrupt departure of Lewis’ character
Axe after season 5. ‘Billions’ returns to
Stan later this year.
Wallen’s epic new album
If Morgan Wallen’s (pictured)
new record is on in your car, your
better make it a long road trip.
‘One Thing At A Time’ was
released last Friday and it features
an extraordinary 36 tracks.
“This record represents the last
few years of my life, the highs and
the lows,” Wallen said.
“It also brings together the
musical influences that have
shaped me as an artist – country,
alternative and hip-hop. There
are 36 songs on this album
because we just kept exploring
with fresh lyrics, music and
production ideas and these are
the songs that felt right to me. It
was a blast to create, and I was so
grateful to be back in the studio to
lay this out for my fans.”
The album is available now
on all your regular streaming
services.
Wallen is about to tour Australia
and appear at the CMC Rocks
festival in Queensland later this
month.
Paisley back with a bang
Country music staple Brad
Paisley has released a new track,
‘Same Here’.
It’s the first song on his new
label, UMG, as Paisley begins
the next stage in his successful
country career.
Paisley will release a brand new
studio album later this year, his
first in some time.
Paisley first broke into the country
scene in 1999 with the hit ‘He
Didn’t Have To Be’.
Bragging rights to go on the line
NATHAN TAYLOR
After their shock loss to Perth last weekend,
the Western Sydney Wanderers
have no better fixture to turn things
around than this Saturday night’s third and
final Sydney Derby.
With both sides winning one game apiece
during their first two meetings this season,
Saturday evening’s blockbuster at Allianz
Stadium will be for bragging rights.
The Wanderers enter this weekend’s Sydney
Derby in fourth place on the A-League Men’s
ladder while Sydney FC are hot on their tails
in sixth position.
Western Sydney had the opportunity to
remain in second heading into Saturday’s
game however a 96th minute goal to Perth last
Friday at HBF Park cruelled their chances.
It was a stunning last gasp victory from the
Glory, who overcame the blow of receiving the
second-fastest red card in A-League history to
pull off the 1-0 win.
Perth defender Jordan Elsey was sent off after
93 seconds for his clumsy studs-up challenge
that caught Wanderers star Yeni Ngbakoto on
his Achilles tendon.
Glory defended their backsides off for the
entire match before catching a lucky break in
the 84th minute when Wanderers defender
Tomislav Mrcela was also shown a red.
Perth went on an attacking rampage at the
death, with midfielder Aaron McEneff securing
the match winner deep into injury time.
