Leo Cullen head Coach Welcome A warm Dublin welcome to Dan McFarland and his <strong>Ulster</strong> team, along with all the travelling fans who have made the journey down south for this evening’s game. It’s always a special occasion when two Irish sides meet in the knock-out stages of the Heineken Champions Cup and we know we face a tough challenge against a very good opponent. The clocks have gone forward now, which means we’re into the sharp end of the season when the big prizes start to appear on the horizon. The nature of this competition means we’ve had to wait a while for today’s fixture – our last pool game was on 21 January, a full ten weeks ago – while 10 | www.leinsterrugby.ie the new format certainly hasn’t made it any easier to win. Whoever wins today will have just one week to prepare for a quarter-final next weekend, which means not just players but supporters having to dig deep and go again! On which note, a huge thanks for all the support in recent weeks. It’s been brilliant. There was an absolutely cracking atmosphere at the RDS Arena last Friday, and we needed every ounce of it as we battled to a draw against the reigning BKT URC champions, the DHL Stormers. That draw ensured we qualify as top seeds, which is what we wanted and a great reward for all the hard work that’s gone on behind the scenes this season. Thanks also to everyone who has signed up again as season ticket holders. Our season tickets really allow us to plan ahead, so your commitment and continued support is greatly appreciated as we look ahead to making improvements for next season. This is also the case with our sponsors, in particular Bank of Ireland, whose loyal support is so important for the team. We were delighted to welcome Mint as our latest partner. They have put a lot of work into transforming the players’ café at UCD, along with Eoghan Hickey and Sophie Conroy, helping to fuel the <strong>Leinster</strong> players for the demands of the modern game. Welcome Mick, David, Emma and all the team. Congratulations to the winners of the various schools and club competitions that have culminated in the past few weeks – and the best of luck to all clubs who have finals coming up. This is an exciting time of year with so many trophies on the line, and after coming through such a difficult time with Covid, it’s fantastic to see grassroots rugby as strong as ever and growing all the time. We’ll never forget those interrupted couple of years, rattling around in empty stadiums and I think questioning why we were even there in the first place. But it really brought home to us how important our rugby community is – fans, family and friends – and now that we’re back in packed stadiums for big knock-out games, there’s no better feeling in the world.
