SHIRLEY BOYS’ High School
are the national secondary
schools’ futsal champions after
three tightly-contested playoffs
in Wellington last week.
They beat St Patrick’s College
Silverstream 1-0 to win the title
for the first time, having never finished
in the top eight in the past.
Shirley were unbeaten in pool
play, and met Rotorua Boys’ in
the quarter finals. The game
finished 2-2, meaning penalties
would decide who progressed to
the semi-finals. Shirley ended up
winning 5-3.
Just three hours later, they
were facing St Patrick’s Wellington
in another penalty shootout
– this time for a spot in the
national final. The team went on
to win 4-2 in the shoot-out after
both teams scored two goals
apiece in regular play.
Goalkeeper Seb Wong won
the golden gloves award for
the tournament for his efforts
throughout the two shoot-outs
and tense final.
Shirley Boys’ teacher in charge
of futsal De vere Silcock said the
team had been training up to
three times a week and had six
year 13 students who had played
together since they were year 9.
“Shirley futsal has been around
for a while now, and the previous
best place was ninth a few years
CHAMPIONS:
Shirley Boys’
High School
won the senior
boys’ national
futsal title for
the first time
in the school’s
history in
Wellington
last week.
Shirley the champs
after close playoffs
back,” Silcock said.
Coach Mark Zimmerman is a
former student at the school, and
has coached the team for the past
three years.
Shirley travelled to the nationals
shortly after they lost to
Lincoln High School in the Canterbury
secondary schools final
earlier this month. They also finished
second in the Christchurch
weekly competition.
At the national tournament, St
Thomas’ of Canterbury College
and Lincoln High School also
made the quarter finals but
lost in close games against St
Patrick’s College Wellington and
Hutt International Boys’ School
respectively.
Foundation breaks
down barriers to
playing rugby
A SENSE OF connection and
belonging inspired passionate
rugby administrator Brent
Goldsmid to help form the
Canterbury Community Rugby
Foundation.
Goldsmid, who has played,
coached, volunteered and
administrated rugby for more
than 40 years, said
the choice between
playing rugby or
not due to financial
pressures has become
a real concern for
him. He established
the foundation
to ensure more
Cantabrians can play
the game.
“With a cost of
living and travel on
the increase, it’s all
too often becoming
a barrier to being involved in
sport,” he said.
“But I believe there’s
plenty of people out there like
me that have had a wonderful
rugby experience and enjoy
life-long friendships because of
the game are willing and able to
give back but aren’t sure how to
do so.”
The foundation accepts
donations and bequeaths
Brent Goldsmid
Thursday April 6 2023
which it distributes directly to
grassroots rugby.
“The money could be used for
subs, boots, travel, anything that
enables people of all ages to be
involved in rugby.
“Our focus is 100 per cent
on community rugby and
participation.”
Goldsmid said
there are some
aspects of rugby the
foundation won’t
fund.
“Canterbury Rugby
does a really good
job at managing
and funding the
pathways side of
rugby as well as the
semi-professional
side like NPC.
“So we wouldn’t
consider things like
that. That’s their space. Ours is
very much about participation
and helping to remove any of
those barriers.”
Goldsmid is on the
foundation’s board with Natasha
Wong, Julie Patterson, Giuliana
Petronelli and Peter Jensen.
