Thriving on the East
Shirley Boys’ High School
Shirley Boys’ High School – Ngā
Tama o Ōruapaeroa is a school of 1250
rangatahi that serves the eastern suburbs
of Christchurch. It has a rich history,
which continues at Ōruapaeroa. We have
a purpose-built school with first-rate
facilities designed to support the learning
of boys. Although our current site is new,
we still focus on the traditions, customs
and values of a school that has proudly
been part of the community since 1957.
Our staff are expert in the learning needs
and strengths of our ākonga. Teachers
deliver high quality teaching and learning
based on the New Zealand curriculum. The
learning is challenging, engaging and fit for
boys. It is directed by the teacher in a calm
and ordered environment. Our kaupapa
is on developing positive and strong
relationships, with a goal of producing
high levels of academic and personal
achievement in academic, sporting,
cultural and service endeavours.
At Shirley Boys’ High School, boys are
encouraged to participate in a vast array
of sporting and cultural activities that are
designed to prepare them for success at
and beyond school. The desired outcome
for our boys is that they enjoy school and
find it a positive and rewarding experience.
We support this with our core values of
Whakaute -Respect, Whānau, Hononga -
Belonging, Tuakiri - Character and Better
than Before. These values contribute to
making our school strong across all areas.
Through living and demonstrating these
values, our boys will continue to learn and
grow, and will be positive role models,
contributing citizens.
Shirley Boys’ High School is committed
to preparing rangatahi to succeed in
their world by providing learning that is
designed to enrich boys and encourage
them to be Better than Before.
Christian Integrated
Schools in Christchurch
Working together for the good
of students and families has been a
successful recipe for Christian Integrated
Schools in Christchurch.
The Christian Education Network
has been in existence for over ten years.
Aidanfield Christian School, Emmanuel
Christian School, Hillview Christian
School, and Middleton Grange School
decided in 2005 that there was much to be
gained by working together cooperatively.
They recognised opportunities to share
successful teaching practice, curriculum
development initiatives across a wide
spectrum of school operations as well as
cooperatively strengthening their special
Christian Character. They recognised that
their ability to serve students and families
was greatly enhanced by working together
Thursday April 13 2023
in a close and trusting relationship.
The success of the network has seen
other schools wanting to join in. Early
in the piece Rangiora New Life School
became part of the network. The schools
joined together to support the genesis
of Ashburton Christian School and also
culminated in the start up of the brand
new Rolleston Christian School in 2015.
The schools have developed interlocking
enrolment schools which assists in
providing transparent pathways in
Christian education from new entrant
through to Year 13.
A further strength has been a
cooperative engagement with the Ministry
of Education who have been pivotal
in assisting the network’s successful
development.
