Schools aim to dominate polo pool
•From page 1
Auckland’s Rangitoto College
took out both the boys’ and
girls’ national titles last year,
but North Island champions
Diocesan School for Girls
and Auckland’s Sacred Heart
College look to be favourites
this year.
It will be the first time both
the girls’ and boys’ grades
are hosted in Christchurch,
although the girls’ division one
tournament has been held here
twice previously.
Rangi Ruru will be hoping
to continue their dominant
form in the girls’ division
following the South Island
championships, where they
beat rivals St Margaret’s
College 9-2 in the tournament
final.
The team scored 68 goals
throughout the competition
and conceded 11, with the
highest score recorded by a
Rangi Ruru opponent just four
goals by Villa Maria College in
the semi-final.
St Bede’s had a similar run at
the South Island tournament,
scoring an average of 18 goals
per game and conceding just 12
in their six games.
The team overcame
Christchurch Boys’ High 13-4
in the final to take out the
regional title in what was their
closest game of the tournament.
Both Rangi Ruru and
St Bede’s also swept the
tournament awards, with Aggie
Weston and Joshua Fraher
taking out most valuable
players while Zoe Crisp and
Angus Nevin were awarded the
most valuable goalies.
The national division one
competitions will be held
at Jellie Park and Tairoa:
QEII, while the division two
tournament will be played in
Auckland this week.
WINNERS: South Island water polo champions Rangi Ruru will be competing for the national title. Right – St Bede’s College will be looking to continue
their form from the South Island secondary schools’ water polo championships.
