It's got a Hemi somehow
When the PT Cruiser debuted, it was one of those
things that was cool right up until it wasn’t, and that
transitioned quick.
OBITUARY
WATSON, Richard John (Bud)
November 6, 1929 - April 10, 2023
They looked old but futuristic.
They were compact yet
still underpowered, even
for their size. Remember all the
independent custom concept drawings
from back in the day? There
were convertibles, two-door
sedans, sedan delivery
vans, pickups,
roadster pickups,
Camshaft everything. Remember
the wood
Corner
kits that you could
glue on, then have a
reason to strap that
surfboard onto the
roof? Roth-style drawings
of cartoon PT Cruisers with
huge monsters driving them were
even common. These things were
the next hot rod, right up until the
moment that they weren’t.
They were almost like a Plymouth
Prowler if it were made into a van,
and although the Prowler was a
little underpowered, the PT Cruiser
seemed a lot underpowered. I
don’t think they sold too badly, and
I still see a few on the road today,
but very few. Not long ago, I saw
one for sale that was on a lifted
4x4 chassis with big mud tires.
Had it been local, I would have
contemplated cutting it into a lowbuck
UTV for summer, like a little
Bronco from outer space. Although
uncool to the ninety-nine percent,
there’s that pesky one percent that
can’t leave well enough alone. The
kind that does things like stuffing
a Hellcat engine into these things
and re-introducing the cool factor
to them.
One percent might be a lofty
estimate, as I have seen exactly
one Hellcat PT Cruiser to date: a
boring, white one. Rolling off the
assembly line with somewhere
between 136hp and 230hp with a
bigger, turbocharged engine, not
one single PT Cruiser was “fast.”
Sure, you could tweak them like
anything, but nothing would get
you that violent acceleration that
would actually make one cool.
Enter the Hellcat V8.
Mopar people like putting big Mopar
things into little Mopar things.
80’s Daytonas and Lasers with big
engines and rear-drive swaps, 440
Valiants, stuff like that. Sure, GM
people put small blocks in S10s and
Vegas’ and Chevettes, but if those
cars were made by Chrysler, the
fan base would have the cutting
torch handy and the 440 out of the
RV ready to go in. This PT Cruiser
is exactly what I think about when
I think about a Mopar swap. It’s
WAAAAAY out of the realm of
your normal street rod swap.
Terry and Patsy Beaty from Tennessee
knew what they wanted,
and they trusted Smokey Mountain
Chassis of Georgetown to get
the job done. What they ended up
with was essentially your typical,
although drastically overpowered
street rod, with a PT Crusier on
top. The front end was swapped
out for a Mustang II, and the stock,
dead rear axle was swapped out for
a 9.25” differential from a Dodge
pickup. Coilover shocks handle
all the bumps and corners. I have
almost no information on the
chassis, but I’m assuming a whole
chassis was built front-to-back, or
at the very least, a stout sub-frame
system, as there’s no visible cage
inside to stiffen the stock body.
Is it cool? Yeah, it’s cool, and although
I don’t know what it sounds
like, the swap is so clean that I bet
nine-out-of-ten people think the
Hemi decals on the sides are just
a joke.
