Police seek driver
of dark grey sedan

A PERSON and their dog were
allegedly run down by a car
after the driver abused them
and made death threats.
Police have now released
CCTV footage in a bid to
identify the driver.
The incident happened
late afternoon on April 14 in
Lincoln. It may not be the first
incident where people walking
their dogs have been abused
by the motorist in a dark grey
sedan.
The April 14 drama unfolded
when a person walking their
dog was verbally abused by the
driver of the sedan on Springs
Rd near Southfield Dr. The
driver also allegedly threatened
to kill the dog walker.
“He yelled that I abused my
dog,” the dog walker said.
“He also yelled out that he
was about to kill me several
times and he was going to grab
my dog off me.”
The dog walker was “chased”
by the motorist into Southfield
Dr and then into nearby
Blunden Rd.
“He then ran his car at
us twice onto people’s front
properties, he succeeded the
third time hitting both my dog
and myself knocking us both
over,” the person said.
“The only reason I think he
stopped was that people (there
were) in the park.”
The person and the dog were
not badly hurt.

Petition for skate ramp
grows; meeting to be held

MORE THAN 1500 people want
action on the now dismantled
controversial skateboard ramp
in Lincoln.
The ramp in the Rosmerryn
subdivision was removed this
month, following a failed noise
test by the district council.
Residents had complained
that the wooden half-pipe was
producing a drumming or
thumping noise.
Other residents wanted it to
stay so their children could use it.
The site is currently owned
by Fulton Hogan, which has
removed the ramp as a result of
the noise test. But the company
is not saying whether it will
replace the ramp with a quieter
surface. Fulton Hogan would
not answer questions from the
Selwyn Times, instead referring
the newspaper to Rosemerryn’s
web page. There is no mention of
replacing the ramp on the page.
The district council will take
control of the park in December
next year.
Jamie Taylor, who lives about
100m from the ramp, started a
petition to have it rebuilt with
quieter materials after he saw
two children crying on the fence
when it was being removed.
On Monday, there were 1508
signatures on the online petition.
The success has prompted
Taylor to set up a public meeting
for nearby residents and users of
the skate park to come up with a
solution that works for all.
“There was consultation with
the public, and when I started
the petition a lot of people
didn’t even know it was being
removed,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the meeting, the
date which is yet to be confirmed,
would allow people to
have an open discussion where
everyone could share their
views.

Mundt said those attending
the public meeting should “leave
their emotions at the door”
and be prepared to work with
everyone.
“We want it to work for everybody,
and we know there will be
a solution out there that we can
find.”
Mundt said where needed
district council staff were happy
to assist Fulton Hogan to remedy
the situation.

average rates increase is 5.9 per

Flying fox cables were recently
removed as part of a standard
audit process by the district
council. The cables were removed

in Lincoln, Wilfield playground
in West Melton and Foster Park
in Rolleston. The district council
said the cables would be returned
after inspection.

Kirsty case: Potential key
suspect yet to be interviewed

POLICE HAVE not yet spoken
to a potential key suspect in the
unsolved Kirsty Bentley murder
case, several months after getting
a tip off.
It was revealed in October the
tip was given to police after a
$100,000 reward was posted in
a bid to solve the cold case in
July.
The person is known to the
two men who found 15-yearold
Kirsty’s body at the Rakaia
Gorge 17 days after she was
last seen alive in Ashburton on
December 31, 1998. They told
police at the time they were in
the Rakaia Gorge area looking
for cannabis plots.
Police later ruled them out as
suspects in the case.
The person known to the pair
had not featured in the police
investigation until the reward
was posted in July.
Detective Inspector Greg
Murton declined to discuss the
tip when contacted in October
saying it would be “unhelpful” to
the investigation.
But last week he said the
information was one of the leads
being pursued by police which
came out of the reward appeal.
“That is one of the 14 bits
of information that we are
following up on, but I can’t
comment any further,” Murton
said.
He would not say why the
person had not been spoken to
yet by police. The two men who
found Kirsty’s body had also not
been spoken to as part of the
inquiries into the tip-off, he
said.
“There’s nothing that has led
directly at this stage to take us
in any particular direction in
the inquiries, but there are some
points of interest that we are
following up on.”
The $100,000 reward expired
in January. It will be paid if it
leads to material information
or evidence to the identity and
conviction of the person or
people responsible for Kirsty’s
murder.
In the original investigation,
Kirsty’s late father Sid, who died
in 2015, and brother John were
suspects.

launched in July, Murton said he

Abby was found the next day

BOWEL CANCER sufferer Dan
Morbey’s plan to return to the
United Kingdom to see family,
potentially for the last time, has
been put on hold.
The 36-year-old Rolleston
father of two was given only six
months to live at the start of
March, following a stage four
bowel cancer diagnosis last year.
Morbey was due to travel back
to Birmingham in May, but
this has been cancelled after his
health took a turn for the worse
this month.
Morbey’s partner Sarah Noble
said they are now trying to get
the family to New Zealand.
“We are seeing what we can do.”
At the end of March, a routine
MRI revealed a blockage in
Morbey’s bowel. That same day,
he had to have ileostomy surgery
and now has a stoma.
Morbey had been recovering
from this major surgery, but
at the start of April turned
yellow from jaundice and was
experiencing excruciating pain,
Nobel said.
He ended up back in the
hospital because his tumour was
blocking a bile duct in his liver,
causing it not to drain properly.
While a procedure to drain
the bile duct was successful, it
hasn’t helped with the pain he is
experiencing.
“He doesn’t seem to be getting
better, so we’re not sure what is
going on,” Nobel said.
“All I’m doing is caring for him
and making sure he is eating
properly.”
Noble said they have to try
everything and “just hope”
something works.
With Noble dividing her time
between caring for Morbey and
looking after their two young
children, they are relying fully on
donations from the community
and WINZ support.
“WINZ doesn’t even cover our
household bills, let alone all the
medical expenses,” she said.
Since March, they have been
able to raise another $4000 on
their Givealittle page, all of
which is going towards Morbey’s
treatment.
“WINZ is only covering
our rent, power and food, and
everything else, including
any holistic treatments and
appointments are being
funded directly from generous
donations, which we are
immensely grateful for,” Noble
said.

Committee
to become
incorporated
society
THE NEXT steps for the Lincoln
Community Committee have
been decided.
Following the decision by the
district council to disestablish
the committee last year, it had
two choices as to how it could
continue – as a residents group or
an incorporated society.
Current chair Kathryn Claridge
said in a unanimous vote last
week it was decided the committee
will become an incorporated
society. Beyond that, little was
decided.
“We need to have another
meeting, which will be the second
Monday in May, to give ourselves
a name, create a constitution and
meet all the legal requirements
of us becoming an incorporated
society,” Claridge said.
She was unsure whether she
will remain chair under the new
model.
The committee won’t be officially
disestablished till the end
of June.
The district council has
progressively disestablished its
70 community committees since
2021, a programme it plans to
conclude by June 30.

Angie and the Renal Rebels fight
cancer ‘together’ at Relay for Life

Milner, the Selwyn Relay For
Life on Saturday is a chance to
help and inspire others to fight
the disease.
The Leeston woman said she
is looking forward to taking
part in her third Relay For
Life event at Brookside Park in
Rolleston.
It will be the first time Angie
has also been involved with
the behind-the-scenes side of
the event as a member of the
organising committee.
“The most special part
of Relay For Life for me is
the closing ceremony when
everyone lights candles in the
darkness in memory of those
who have passed from cancer,”
Angie says.
“It is very moving and
symbolises what everybody has
gone through,” she says.
Angie became involved
with the Cancer Society when
she was diagnosed with renal
cancer a few months after
the society’s Rolleston centre
opened on Kidman St.
“I had been sick for
18 months before I was
diagnosed,” Angie said.
“I thought I’d got kidney

stones so it was a surreal
experience finding out that I
had cancer.
“I felt as though I had to be
strong for my family and it
never really sunk in that I had
cancer until day 99 when I went
in for surgery.
“The first time when I was
speaking with Jackie (Claridge)
at the Cancer Society centre
in Selwyn she asked me
what information I had and
I realised that I didn’t know
anything – I hadn’t been given
any other information from my
appointments.”
Now Angie is no stranger
to fundraising for the society,
having previously put on an art
auction and opened a pop-up
recycled clothing shop for the
organisation.
Her Relay For Life team is
known as the ‘Renal Rebels’ –
and all 11 team members live
in the district. “Two of us are
cancer survivors, five have had
family members affected by
cancer and the remaining four
have been part of our cancer
journeys,” Angie says.
The team’s motto is “together
we fight”. Their fundraising
initiatives include offering
virtual Zumba classes in return
for a donation and selling
T-shirts and cookies in the
shape of boxing gloves.
Angie’s husband Kev is also
participating in the Relay
For Life – but in an opposing
team. Kev is part of the district
council’s civil defence response
team, RT21, also known as The
Roadcones.
Members of the public are
invited to enjoy the free from

Park 10am to 10pm and
support the teams’ fundraising.

Parking fines total $7140 in first six months

the district council started
fining people for parking
infringements.

various offences,
including vehicles
parked on footpaths and grass
berms, over broken yellow
lines and in prohibited areas,
along with infringements for
expired warrants of fitness and
registrations.
Thirty seven fines are still
unpaid.
The district council does not
have parking wardens walking
the streets issuing fines. Instead,
it relies on the public to report
issues.
“We have received positive
feedback from the community in
relation to our response to parking
issues within the district,”
Atherton said.
She said there are no plans
for a dedicated parking compliance
team, but it is something
the district council will review
and assess the need for in the
future. The compliance team will
continue to incorporate issuing
infringements into its daily
operations.
Up until September last year,
the district council had taken an
education-first strategy, with that
changing to a more fines-based
approach.
“Requests from the public for
the council to take more action
around unsafe parking are part
of the reason we took on parking
safety enforcement,” Atherton
said.
She said the requests often
come in high-traffic areas,
where there is demand for car
parking such as around schools,
educational facilities, parks and
commercial areas, but they also
receive requests to look into issues
in residential areas around
the district.
Atherton said they still focus
on education where possible.
“Our primary focus is on
education, so often we endeavour
to contact vehicle owners
with reminders on the legal
requirements.”

Lincoln for years and regularly
walking through Rosemerryn,
I know how fortunate we are to
have a huge number of facilities
in our town.
In Rosemerryn itself, there is a
huge brand new bike and scooter
pump track, a flying fox, a
themed playground, larger open
grassed spaces, rivers and walks.
Just down at the domain there is
a full skate park, a fitness centre
and a mountain bike jump park.
All open and free. And yet the
focus is not on all these positives
but on one very small item they
don’t have.
It seems clear to me that the
skate ramp was making a lot of
residents miserable and affecting
their quality of life. Much more
misery caused than the joy from
the small addition the skate
ramp gave to the huge number
of activities the children already
have on offer. It seems these days,
children cry and parents will get
them what they want with no
regard to the effect on others. Instead
of pointing out all the other
options and how fortunate they
are, they berate the Rosemerryn
developers, the district council
and start a petition.

April 20). A level 1 STMS
is responsible for the safe
installation and operation of
temporary traffic management
at work sites. If and when
traffic management is left up
is set out by NZTA through
COPTTM (code of practice for
temporary traffic management)
and the RCA (road controlling
authority), which for Selwyn
is the district council. So the
deputy mayor is complaining
against himself obviously for
political reasons.
There could be a number of
reasons they require it to be left
up, such as uncompleted work
which could cause accidents if
taken down. If they are left up
then there are requirements
around which speed limits are
left up as well. Point to note that
it is illegal to race through as
most people do above the speed
limit and it has been suggested
we follow the UK and put speed
cameras on all road works.
Speeding doesn’t change whether
people are actually working or
not unless you use a radar gun
and only the police can enforce
the speeds on those.
Like many at present, I
have moved away from traffic
management due to the way
NZTA over-complicates things
and the constant changes, but
also the unwarranted abuse and
dangerous driving from mainly
Kiwis.

Cost of repairing quake-damaged hall raises concerns

THERE ARE concerns over a
half-a-million-dollar bill to fix a
community hall.
It is estimated it will cost
an additional $165,798
to carry out earthquake
strengthening on the Mead
Community Hall, bringing
the total required to
$506,025.
The district council had
previously approved $340,227
to strengthen the building.

raised his concerns over the amount
being spent on the building in the
latest transport and infrastructure
committee meeting. “We need a
report back to tell us why we should
be spending the money,” he said.
Lyall’s main concern is
whether it will be worth
repairing the hall based on how
often it is being used.
“We spent a lot of money
very close to it at Dunsandel,
and the Dunsandel facility is
hardly used except for a large
corporate down the road.”
District council staff said use of the
Mead hall has been limited due to it
being earthquake-prone. It was currently
used by three church groups
– two Filipino, one Argentinian –
once a week, as well as other events
during the year.
Staff said no physical work will be
done on the hall until the additional
funding is approved. But this will
require a report on its uses and
value to the community. The hall
is among 35 earthquake-prone
buildings in the district that require
different levels of work to bring
them up to standard. Most of the
work is set to be done in 2035/36.

TWENTY NINE species of spider
have been found in my backyard in
Lincoln, half of which are introduced.
My newest spider find is Steatoda
grossa, the introduced false black
widow or cupboard spider. Fortunately,
this species isn’t deadly
like the black widow, but its bite
can cause pain and swelling, but
no worse than a wasp sting. This
is a cosmopolitan species found in
North America, northern Europe
and Australasia. The females are the
largest at 6.5-10mm, while males
are 4-6mm.
Females are purple-brown and
have two lighter-coloured triangles
on the abdomen. Both male and
females have a pale crescent on
the front of the abdomen. Healthy
females can each produce three or
more white egg sacs per year and
each sac can contain 40-100 eggs.
Steatoda grossa females usually
live 1-1.5 years. However, they
have been known to live up to six
years, whereas the poor male dies
soon after mating. They are usually
found in dark places near the
ground, such as under furniture,
and catch invertebrates in a messy
looking web. You may be aware
of the city nature challenge where
we try to record observations of as
many species as we can over four
days from Friday. Find out more at

a Selwyn twist of seasonal vegetables and creamy
Ayelsbury milk. There will also be workshops on how
nutrition can improve your mental health through to
learning the art of watercolour painting with Selwyn
artist Soon-Lee Spicer while eating delicious Taste

workshop with inspiration from locally baked goods,
shared at the completion of the workshop.

Town centre gets green space upgrade
A space to gather, play, relax and enjoy nature has been confirmed as the next stage of
development in the Rolleston town centre.
The Council has confirmed construction to start on the development of the reserve
green space with City Care set to complete the $1.5 million upgrade to the areas to
the north and west of the town centre buildings.
An amphitheatre with
capacity for 1000–1200
people will be built near the
sensory space and youth
space, to host public events,
along with upgrades to the
existing fields.
The amphitheatre will be an
important piece in helping
make the town centre a centre
for the community, Councillor
Phil Dean says.
“It will be great to have
another gathering space where our community can come to mark big events and
commemorations, as well as smaller community events. Gathering is an important
part of building community and having another central space to do that will be really
positive for Rolleston.”
The reserve will feature picnic areas, plantings and pathways to allow people to enjoy
a quiet break away from the main town centre retail areas. The existing children’s
playground will be kept and there will also be a continuation of some of the features in
the youth zone with small skate areas branching off some of the pathways with street
skate features such as steps, rails and platforms, Council Major Projects Manager
Phillip Millar says.
“It’s an exciting new part of the development, refreshing what was there previously
and providing something different again for the town centre. It will be a space to relax,
where people can enjoy some green areas, walk, picnic, and play games.”
Construction of the green space is due to begin mid-May and is planned to finish in
early 2024.

Libraries and at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston for Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa —
New Zealand Music Month.
The Music month events coming to Selwyn in May, will feature performances,
lessons and fun activities planned for every member of the family, inviting
people to try their hand at playing an instrument, listening to live music and
attending special performances.
The theme for this year’s national Music Month is ‘community and
collaboration’, which encourages people to think outside the box about what
they can do together, support artists’ journeys as creators, and help build a
connected and rewarding local music community.
The community connection is a huge part of music month, Council Culture,
Content and Learning Manager Mat Logan says.
“New Zealand Music Month is a really fun month in our libraries and we’ve got
a good range of events this year. It’s been really good to see the excitement
people have for it with things like the taonga puoro event showcasing
traditional Māori instruments
already sold out and lots of
excitement for other events.”
Among the events will be local
performances every Saturday
at all Selwyn libraries, music
themed story times and guitar
lessons, available every week
at the Lincoln and Leeston
Libraries for people aged 15
and over to get started or
brush up on the basics.
The lessons will be run by Diego from Music with Diego, and you’ll need to
bring your own instrument.

to the boys premier schools’ first
XI football competition against
Middleton Grange today.
The first XI were promoted to
the premier grade after going
through division 1 unbeaten last
season.
It’s the first time since 2020
Lincoln have played in the
competition.
A promising pre-season
tournament in Rolleston two
weeks ago saw Lincoln manage
an impressive 1-1 draw against
defending champions Cashmere
High, along with wins against
Rolleston College and Rangiora
High.
Lincoln have retained 14 of
their 18-player squad from last

High coming up from division 1,
the premier grade has expanded
to a 14-team competition, split

“It was a close game, Glenmark

10-0 up early, but we managed
three tries in the first half and
went into halftime in front (21-
15),” he said.
“Our forwards really carried
us. Ben MacLeod, our openside
flanker, really stepped up. We
just kept our nose in front in a
brutal battle.
“It was a bit of redemption
after last week.”
Southbridge have also started

games and go into Saturday’s

to Methven – their second loss

Soper said a big focus is playing
consistent rugby.
“It’s a big battle and to finally

Dig in and heap compost for spring
There’s not always
a ‘right’ time to do
garden jobs – but
intervention now can
save time in spring,
writes Hannah Zwartz
THE RIGHT time to prune any
particular plant can be simply
when you happen to pass by
with a pair of secateurs in your
hand – to quote the late garden
maestro Christopher Lloyd.
That said, some timely
interventions now can save work
in spring.
Heaps and heaps
Materials such as dead vege
plants, new weeds and fallen
leaves abound right now, along
with warmish, wet weather
perfect for building compost
heaps.
Making compost is the one
best thing you can do for your
soil, and there are many ways to
do it. one of my favourites is to
heap up materials, layered with
seaweed and grass clippings,
directly onto a bed where you
will be planting in spring.
Sprinkle on some lime or
wood ash, innoculate the
heap with a bit of live, mature
compost if possible, water well
and cover with a sack or old
woollen blanket – come tomato

planting time, you’ll have a
weed-free, well nourished bed.
I also make compost in smaller
‘puke’ (mini mounds 50cm-1m
wide) anywhere I’m hoping to
grow pumpkins next year.
As long as pumpkins or
gourds have their roots in a
heap of rich, moist compost, they
will happily scramble into the
sun to grow over hedges, trees,
sheds or weedy banks, making
the most of your space without
smothering other veges
(which can happen when you
plant them in the actual vege
bed).
Start puke with twiggy
prunings now, adding grass
clippings, leaves and seaweed in
layers over winter. While you’re
tucked indoors, your compost
heaps can be rotting down for
the spring resurrection.
Broad beans
Broad beans make a great
winter crop because they sprout
at low temperatures. And they’re
pretty much foolproof, great for
beginners or kids. Poke seeds
directly into the soil, at about
half a thumb’s depth, add a
side dressing of wood ash or
lime to prevent chocolate spot
disease, then stand back and
wait. If you don’t eat all the pods
when they’re young, sweet and
delicious, older dried beans can
be ground up for falafels.
Broad beans need some sort of
support – a pole in each corner
of the bed, with strings zigzagged
between, will do the job.
Another option we are
using this year is to plant rows
about a metre apart, with
trenches between where early
potatoes can be planted around
September.
The broad beans will act as
frost shelter, and can then be
chopped down to mulch the
potatoes in early summer. Grow
your own straw, for the ultimate
in low food miles.
Harvest
Autumn is the season of
mellow fruitfulness, “filling all
fruits with ripeness to the core.”
This is wonderful, but also can
be a burden, because harvest and
preserving all take time.
Feijoas on wet ground rot
quickly – laying a sheet or tarp
under the tree will help. Cut up
any slightly spotty apples and
make a jar of apple cider vinegar
(peelings and cores can also be
used for this). Pick seeds from
silverbeet, lettuce, marigolds and
parsley on a dry day, and store
for next year.
Pears can be picked while still
hard, to ripen in a fruit bowl
away from birds and wasps.
Don’t rush pumpkins, however
– prop them on a brick or pot
to keep them from rotting
where they touch the ground,
and wait until the stalk itself is
totally brown and shrivelled. If
picked before they’re fully ripe,
pumpkins won’t have such a full
rich, sweet flavour or store as
long.
Plant and sow
April is the best month to
sow new lawns or top dress
bare patches. The ground is still
warm, but colder nights make
for dew, even without rain.
Rake the area flat, add a layer
of weed-free lawn mix or potting
mix, and sow grass seed, or try
a low-mow lawn (my pick is the
native Dichondra – though this
is a warmth-lover, best sown in
spring in colder areas.)

keep birds from scratching it

undertake a project to see a unique
1946 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe 5-seater
car with two doors fully restored to what it
should be.
Ken bought the car from his friend,
Aucklander Barry Moyle, who had changed
the Chevy engine, trans and diff back to Ford.
After sitting unused in a barn for 28 years,
Barry realised he would never do anything
with it, so he sold it to Ken in 2021. Ken
brought it to the South Island and began the
process of completely rebuilding it.
Ken, nearing 80, says this is the last one
as he has been building cars since he was
14 years old. He has had a lifelong interest
in cars, having had hot rods in the NZ top
ten, and is now the proud owner of a 2016
GT Coyote Mustang and an original 1959
Ford Thunderbird (also bought off Barry).
However, he didn’t expect the coupe to be
such a project. Ken claims, “We are only
caretakers for whatever we own, so someone
else will get it one day. I am pretty fussy about
cars with my name on them, and they should
be the best they can possibly be.”
So with that attitude and many, many
thousands of dollars in restoration, Ken
states, “From the outside, it looks stock, but
underneath, it is totally transformed.” The
entire chassis running gear has been rebuilt,
and the engine, trans and diff serviced. The
coupe is complete with a Ford Cleveland 351
4V V8 seven litre-engine, FMX auto trans and
Ford 9-inch Ratio 3.00, with ‘the get up go
and the looks to go with it’. It now drives like
a brand-new car with other modifications,
including new carbs, radiator, brake
lines, wheel cylinders, independent front
suspension, and power steering.
The rare vehicle with wind-out quarterlight
windows and opening back side windows
has new glass and rubbers. It retained its
original dash but now has “all the mod cons”,
including heated seats with diagonal seatbelts,
an upmarket heating system, demisters, and
even Bluetooth.
The restoration didn’t stop there, and a
whopping 300 hours of paint and panel work
from DA Panel Beating in Rangiora took over
four months. After all the parts were stripped
and sanded back to metal, the flawless
body was finished in a goldy, iridescent
red called Ford Ruby Red. With fully rechromed
bumpers and superb paintwork,
Ken says, “In the sun, it looks like a red
diamond”.
The process continued with custom
upholstery work in dark maroon and black,
completed by Brian at Advanced Upholstery
in Darfield. The back seat was custom-built
by Brian to look like a 64 Thunderbird
with its wrap around the corners, while the
original American front glide seat was given
more detail. Ken praised Brian and Sue from
Advanced Upholstery, saying, “They have
gone beyond what I expected of them, and
they have done a beautiful job.”
Now that the vehicle is complete and due
to get its warrant and certification, Ken is
keen to go cruising. With his motto: “Driven,
not hidden”, he will enjoy the car that might
otherwise have been gone forever. Ken will
meet friends and display his newly restored
coupe at an upcoming Cromwell Pre 49s
national event.
Ken says,” If you have a dream, just stick
with it, and you will realise that dream if you
are keen enough.”

Wheels week is back!
If you love anything and everything on wheels, then
GDC Ashburton Wheels Week has a three-week, actionpacked
line up of events for you!
This year’s event kicks off with a classic car run on
Sunday, April 30, leaving the Ashburton Show Grounds
at 10.30 am and finishing at Mount Peel. All cars are
welcome, and bringing a picnic is highly recommended
for a fun day’s outing.
Held on May 6, the Americar Rod & Custom Club Car
Show is a widely anticipated event featuring displays of
beautiful vehicles, and Rocker Cover Racing to keep you
entertained, plus car balancing competitions.
Another popular event to squeeze in on the day is the
Ashburton Vintage Car Club Swap Meet. The swap meet
offers an eclectic range of stalls featuring motoring goods
and collectibles, along with a variety of bric-a-brac.
A major drawcard of GDC Wheels Weeks is the Street
Sprints held on May 13–14, which guarantee actionpacked
entertainment as each car races against the clock,
resulting in a two-car run-off on the second day to find
the winner. The popular event is in its 34th consecutive
year.
There’s plenty of action and entertainment for
enthusiasts throughout the three weeks, including
speedway racing competing for two New Zealand
titles, car and motorcycle shows, competitions, local
history, wheelchair basketball, trail bike riding,
night trials, a 4x4 club play day, go kart racing, and a
motorcycle road ride, along with the movies ‘Ford V
Ferrari’, ‘Born Racer’, and ‘Love the Beast’ showing at
the Regent Cinema. Activities also include a fun bike
ride from the south end of Ashburton Bridge to Lake
Hood, suitable for families and individuals.
And to finish off the three-week festival on Sunday,
May 21, in conjunction with displays both on and off
water by Classic Boats, there will be a Boys & Girls With
Their Toys event at Lake Hood where people can turn up
with their favourite set of wheels—motorcycles, trucks,
tractors, fire engines, or hot rods. Entry is free, and coffee
will be available onsite.

Do you have what we are looking for?
• Comprehensive practice nurse experience in venepuncture, cervical screening
examinations, immunisations and vaccinations is preferred
• Self-motivation and self-directed learning with intentions of ongoing professional
development; we encourage staff learning opportunities and further training
• Excellent communication skills, good time management and ability to adapt
when necessary
• Acute nursing experience and PRIME certified are an advantage, however not a must
• Ability to build strong rapport with team members
• Knowledge of MedTech Evolution desirable

The general public is to be advised that a
New Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted
in the West Melton Rifle Range area over the
period 01 – 05 May 2023.
The exercise will involve up to 60 personnel
of 1 Command Support Regiment from
Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers conducting
qualification shoots on a number of weapon
systems including HE natures.
HE 40mm grenades will be fired between
10am and 4pm on Thursday 4th of May 2023.
The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously
and will ensure fire mitigation is present.
