ANGELA BLACKMOORE
MURDER TRIAL
Details of
property
agreement
emerge
• By Kurt Bayer
YOUNG MUM Angela
Blackmoore happily signed a
property document with a debt
collector now standing trial for
her 1995 murder, a court heard
yesterday.
However, her fiancé held
concerns that she was illiterate
while her future mother-inlaw
told police of her “shock”
at finding David Hawken,
an alleged associate of the
Templars MC gang, inside her
living room with a briefcase
and papers just weeks before
Blackmoore’s grisly killing.
Details of the arrangement
have emerged this week at the
High Court at Christchurch
where Hawken, 50, and
ex-stripper Rebecca Wright-
Meldrum, 51, are standing trial
for the August 17, 1995 murder.
They both deny any part in
Blackmoore’s death and have
pleaded not guilty.
For 25 years the case went
unsolved before police suddenly
received fresh information and
Jeremy Crinis James Powell was
arrested and later jailed for at
least 10 years for bludgeoning
and stabbing Blackmoore 39
times in her Wainoni home.
The Crown, which outlined
its case against the pair yesterday,
alleges that Hawken
ordered Powell to carry out
the hit, offering a contract
of $10,000, while Wright-
Meldrum, a close friend and
ex-lover of the safety-conscious
Blackmoore, helped him gain
entry to her house.
It’s been alleged that Hawken
wanted Blackmoore out of the
way so he could profit from a
property deal.
Blackmoore’s partner Laurie
Anderson, who came home
late from work to find her
bloodied and lifeless body, yesterday
spoke of his concern she
had signed a document
with Hawken.
The court heard that Hawken,
who was living and running
his business out of a Cashel St
property owned by Blackmoore
and her estranged husband
William Blackmoore, had
visited her a month earlier at
her Vancouver Cres home.
ONLY TWO or three little
egret birds typically come to
New Zealand most years – but
Wairewa-Lake Forsyth has a
surplus of the rare visitors.
City council ecologist Andrew
Crossland was undertaking a
survey of waterbirds on the lake
Thursday last week when he saw
three little egrets.
“Little egrets probably occur
on the lake about three times in
a decade. The previous highest
count was two birds about six or
seven years ago.”
Crossland said there has been a
high number of sightings in New
Zealand this year, due to birds in
Australia dispersing because a
drought cycle has followed a wet
cycle and inland wetlands have
dried up.
“This then pushes birds to the
Australian coast. Some individuals
may get blown by winds or
simply wander across the Tasman
Sea, reaching New Zealand.
That’s what’s happened with
these little egrets.
“In addition to the three at
Lake Forsyth and another at
Waikuku, others have been reported
from Manawatu Estuary,
Historic telescope back in business
• By Geoff Sloan
THE HISTORIC Townsend
Teece telescope badly damaged
in the February 22, 2011
earthquake has been expertly
restored and reinstalled back in
its Arts Centre home.
The half-tonne telescope was
buried under 35 tonnes of rubble
when the observatory tower
collapsed in the quake.
After a lengthy fundraising
effort, more than $100,000 was
raised privately to restore the
rare scientific instrument and
fund its installation and ongoing
operation.
It took more than three years
of painstaking work by a Canterbury
University team to bring
the piece of the city’s astronomical
heritage back to life.
The team decided on a “sympathetic
restoration”, repairing
and renovating as many original
parts of the telescope as
possible, while keeping many of
its scars from the earthquake.
Associate Professor Karen
Pollard said it had been a long
and hard project to repair the
telescope.
“It’s been 12 years since
we’ve had the telescope open
for open-nights because it was
damaged in the earthquake.
And it’s been quite a voyage and
a mission to get the telescope
restored.”
Pollard said with astronomy
you think about some of the
big questions like “why are
we here? Is there life in the
universe? How did life arise on
the earth?”
The public is invited to view
the stars every Friday night,
with tickets now on sale for
sessions running through
winter.
Long-time bird enthusiast
keeps an eye out for little egrets
on both Wairewa-Lake Forsyth
and Te Waihora-Lake Ellesmere.
Over the last 13 years, Attwood
has only seen little egrets on two
other occasions. This was the first
time he has seen more than one,
at once.
“We seem to be having what
birders call an influx.”
Little egrets are about half the
size of white herons.
Like white herons, little egrets
The amateur ornithologist
He received a message last
week, letting him know there
were little egrets at the lake.
“A lot of people tell me if they
see unusual birds.”
Little egrets tend to come for
their non-breeding season and
only stay for the late autumn and
winter, he said.
Occasionally some will stick
around. These are likely to be
juveniles, birds that have not yet
reached breeding age.
A document giving authority
to sell another property the pair
owned at Ferry Rd, which had
been prepared by a local real
estate agency and was dated July
7, 1995, with a valuation of about
$21,000, had been signed by
Blackmoore.
When shown the document,
Anderson accepted it was her
signature and said that she had
told him she was “happy” with
the meeting with Hawken –
someone he had never met.
“She did not complain about
being forced into this, no,” Anderson
told the court.
But although Blackmoore was
“street smart”, he was worried
over her ability to understand
what she was signing – and that
she wasn’t given a copy.
Under questioning by
Hawken’s defence counsel Anne
Stevens KC, however, Anderson
accepted that Blackmoore had
asked that a copy went to her
lawyer.
Anderson said his new fiancé,
who he had started a relationship
with in January 1995, had wanted
to clear her debts, and the money
from the property’s sale would
help her start a new life.
His understanding was
Hawken, who had been making
mortgage payments because the
Blackmoores had been unable to,
had wanted the Ferry Rd section
sold so he didn’t have to pour
more money into it.
The Crown allege from “early
on” Hawken had an eye on the
financial benefit of the two properties,
wanting to use them and
his own assets to secure loans
for future business ventures,
including a multimillion-dollar
property development at Moncks
Spur, Redcliffs, while also looking
to set up a telecommunications
business.
Andersons’ mother Mary, who
has since died, said she spoke
often with Blackmoore, recalled
popping around to visit her at
Vancouver Cres one afternoon
and saw Hawken and Blackmoore
sitting in the lounge.
Hawken had a briefcase open
and papers around him, she told
police.
“I wondered what the hell he
was doing there,” she said.
“I just got such a shock seeing
her there.”
A boarder told her Blackmoore
was signing papers to sell the
Ferry Rd section.
Two days later, Mary Anderson
warned her not to sign anything,
especially given that she couldn’t
read.
“I hope you know what you are
doing,” she told her.
A massive police investigation
– Operation Vancouver – was
launched after Blackmoore’s
murder.
Both Hawken and Wright-
Meldrum were interviewed at the
time but denied any involvement.
The case went unsolved for
more than two decades before
Powell was arrested in 2019 after
police offered a then-record
$100,000 reward.
Wright-Meldrum’s defence
counsel Stephanie Grieve KC
suggested to the jury earlier the
key issue for them was whether
Powell is “credible and reliable”
when he says Wright-Meldrum
was with him when he murdered
Blackmoore.
Anne Stevens KC, defence
counsel for Hawken, said he had
nothing to do with Blackmoore’s
murder and that he had “no wish
that she die”.
Hawken had no motive, no
money, and no power to order a
murder, his defence team say.
City’s new maternity unit delayed
• By Tony Simons
EXPECTANT mothers won’t get
a much-needed new maternity
unit in the city until the end
of the year after contractors
uncovered problems on the
building site.
Te Whata Ora said the project
team needed to ensure the
existing foundation at the New
Harley Chambers building in St
Asaph St is suitable after striking
trouble with underground water.
The Star has been told asbestos
has also been found on the site,
found by contractors charged
with turning the building into a
fit-for-purpose maternity facility.
But Te Whata Ora
Canterbury executive director
of infrastructure Rob Ojala said
contamination wasn’t a factor in
the delay.
The building is close to the
troubled Parakiore Recreation
and Sports Centre, which has
been plagued by delays.
It was one of the largest land
remediation projects in New
Zealand due to asbestos, poor
ground conditions, underground
water and other hazards on the
site.
Ojala said the birthing unit
won’t be ready until the end of
the year.
“We require a high degree
of confidence around ground
FACILITY: The birthing unit at the New Harley Chambers building on St Asaph St has
been delayed.
moisture control – rather
than any concerns around
contamination,” he said.
The latest delay comes after last
week’s announcement the only
other community birthing unit
in Christchurch at St George’s
Hospital will close at the end
of next month after failing to
secure a contract extension with
Te Whata Ora.
Ojala said “additional works
are now being carried out” at
the St Asaph St site, including
drainage work for the birthing
rooms.
“The costs for these additional
measures are being covered by
the landlord as the building is
leased,” he said.
Midwives Union co-leader
Caroline Conroy said an
extension to St George’s
Maternity Centre contract now
needs to be urgently looked at.
She said not having a
community unit in the city until
next year places mothers and
babies at risk.
“This latest delay puts
even more pressure on the
understaffed tertiary unit at
Christchurch Women’s Hospital,
where more women will be
ROCKPOOL
RIBS
AND A
“International research also
shows for women with healthy
pregnancies going to a hospital
tertiary unit is not the safest
because there are very likely to
be medical interventions,” she
said.
Ojala said the delay was
disappointing but families
would continue to receive the
care and support they need at
Christchurch Women’s Hospital.
Asked if Te Whata Ora might
revisit the contract with St
George’s, a spokesperson said:
“No, we won’t be”.
Te Whata Ora said safe staffing
and workforce constraints due to
the national midwifery shortage
meant the service at St George’s
was no longer sustainable.
The new St Asaph St unit,
approved in 2021, was originally
scheduled to be completed early
this year.
Work only started in January
after HRS Construction was
appointed the lead contractor.
When completed the unit will
include four birthing rooms,
20 post-natal rooms, a whanau
space, and assessment rooms.
It would be staffed by midwives
employed by Te Whata Ora.
It will cater for up to 2500
births a year.
When the St George’s unit
closes, mothers will have to give
birth at Christchurch Women’s
Hospital.
The New Harley Chambers
building was the temporary
Christchurch police station
after the earthquakes and was
later converted into a medical
complex by property developers
Parakiore Recreation and
Sports Centre was supposed to
be finished in 2016 but is over
budget and now not expected to
open until 2025.
Hospital parking woes likely to
• By Niva Chittock
PARKING TROUBLES at
Christchurch Hospital are set to
continue for at least another year.
Documents and emails released
to Radio New Zealand under the
Official Information Act show Te
Whatu Ora Waitaha’s board voted
to delay construction on more safe
staff parking for two years.
An extension to the existing
secure staff parking building on
St Asaph St and a new public
parking building both missed
their original deadlines last year.
Hospital staff have been left
to find their own parking in the
meantime.
Some had been assaulted or
stalked walking to and from their
vehicle or had returned to find
their cars vandalised in recent
years.
The public were also struggling
with limited on-site parking –
only 35 spaces were available
outside the Waipapa building.
The situation
Minister Megan
Woods announced
a $14.25m central
government
contribution
towards both
parking projects in
September 2020.
DELAYS: A new public car park being constructed by Ngāi Tahu Property on the corner of
St Asaph St and Hagley Ave, across the road from Christchurch Hospital, is now expected
to be finished by the end of September – 12 months later than the original timeframe.
PHOTO: NIVA CHITTOCK/RNZ
At the time, she said work was
already under way to ensure
temporary parking for staff while
their secure building was closed
for construction.
In documents and emails
viewed by RNZ, it appeared staff
were not aware of this and were
still scrambling for solutions
five months later.
In February 2021, an internal
report to the health board chair
said “despite earlier hope, there
is no opportunity for ongoing
parking in the building whilst
construction is under way”.
There would be a net loss of 470
car parks by the end of March
if construction went ahead as
originally planned.
That would leave “no secure
parks for afternoon or night shift
staff, no daytime parking for
clinical staff or those staff with
compromised health”, the report
said.
“There are currently no permanent
or reliable solutions to
adequately mitigate this loss of
staff car parks.
“Solutions are urgently being
investigated, but present a cost
burden,” it said.
“The logistics and resources
required to move and relocate
500 staff in a short period will be
significant.
“The health and safety of staff
walking various routes during
the evening and overnight is of
concern, and there have been
reported incidents of assault
against staff,” the report said.
Parking options
The following four proposals
were then listed as the most
viable solutions:
• Leasing additional land from
Fulton Hogan to expand the
hospital’s existing park and ride
service on Deans Ave
• A park and ride service from
The Princess Margaret Hospital
• A park and ride service from
Christchurch Arena
• Delaying the project until the
new public car park building was
completed, then leasing some of
these parks while the extension
was built.
It was estimated extending the
park and ride service on Deans
Ave would cost close to $950,000
a year.
continue for another 12 months
A staff shuttle currently
runs until 1am, but it has
been criticised for not providing
enough safety for nurses.
If it was not running, they
had to walk 20 minutes through
Hagley Park.
The second option, a park and
ride service from The Princess
Margaret Hospital, would
accommodate about 300 parks –
148 fewer than required.
It was noted some staff were
unlikely to use this service
and Environment Canterbury
confirmed it could not operate
a direct bus service between the
two hospitals.
The cost of this proposal
was redacted for commercial
sensitivity reasons.
A third park and ride option
from Christchurch Arena would
cost $675,000 a year ($325,000
to use the parks and $350,000
for transport to and from the
hospital).
Staff would have to pay for this
car park and again, it was noted
“staff who live north or east of
the hospital are unlikely to use
this option”.
Finally, the report authors
wrote “a decision needs to be
made to delay this project”.
A two-year delay was priced at
$759,000 (or $379,500 a year) –
far cheaper than the Deans Ave
and Christchurch Arena options.
The decision was made to delay
it at the same board meeting on
February 18, 2021.
It is not known if staff were
notified of the decision at the
time.
Further issues
Draft documents 18 months
later revealed the car park lease
agreement would only cover just
over a quarter of the 450 parks
required.
The agreement between Ngāi
Tahu Property and Te Whatu
Ora Waitaha was drawn up in
September 2022.
It detailed the lease of just “120
or 150 staff car parking spaces”.
The agreement continued
“(This) Agreement is subject
to Ōtākaro Ltd and the Crown
Minister (currently Megan
Woods) providing approval for
Te Whatu Ora NZ Health to
lease car parks within Te Waka
– Waipapa for the use of staff car
parking.”
Te Whatu Ora confirmed that
same month it was yet to get sign
off from the Minister or Ōtākaro
Ltd.
It was asked again in November
2022, and again, had no sign
off.
Said executive infrastructure
director Dr Rob Ojala: “To date
the sense is that securing support
from two ministers may be quite
a task, especially in the context
of the Te Whatu Ora transition
where roles and responsibilities
are being clarified.”
Cost escalation
In December 2021, Te Whatu
Ora Waitaha’s board increased
the budget of the extension
to allow for the two-year delay.
A total of $2.76m was added to
the project’s budget, bringing the
total cost to $9.25m.
But in February this year, Te
Whatu Ora Waitaha’s clinical
engineering manager Tony
Hampton said the proposed cost
was now much higher.
“As per attached (the) current
build cost (is) at $13.25m,
however we are revising the
build methodology to reduce
this figure,” he wrote in an
email.
This cost was calculated for a
12-month construction period,
estimated to start this June –
nearly three years after it was
first announced.
Ngāi Tahu Property said the
public car park had also been hit
by Covid-related delays.
It was now expected to be
finished by the end of September,
12 months later than the original
timeframe.
TENANTS ARE being forced
to join long queues to view
properties they then miss out
on – with many brought to tears
over the massive shortage of
rental properties in the city.
People trying to get a three
or four-bedroom home in a
decent condition are up against
a huge amount of competition
and many are having to submit
numerous tenancy applications
before finally getting a roof over
their heads.
The number of properties
available for rent has dropped
significantly over the past few
years with the current stock
levels of about 600 properties
similar to what was available
after the earthquakes.
In February 2021, there were
2105 properties for rent, but
this plunged to 1409 in 2022. By
February this year, stock levels
had more than halved to 610.
Over the past two months, the
number has risen slightly to 690
properties for rent in the city.
The median rent has also
risen by $30- $45 a year. It now
sits at $500 a week, Real Estate
Institute of New Zealand data
shows.
Propertyscouts director Ryan
Weir said there was a shortage
of rental properties with some
called the shortage
these properties were
the suburbs performing
extremely well in terms of
Three and four-bedroom
properties were in the
there was an oversupply
of two-bedroom homes
due to well-known
developers building more of
these properties than any others,
hurts renters
Harcourts Holmwood property
management managing director
Caroline Register said it was
“heartbreaking” to see good
applicants miss out on a property.
“If you speak to anybody in the
rental sector there’s certainly a
shortage in Christchurch for sure.”
After the earthquakes there
were about 650
properties available
for rent, she said, and
it was hard for people
to get housing. The
market needs more
rental stock to meet
demand.
“We get multiple
applications on a lot of
the properties we list.”
People did eventually
find homes, but
Register’s advice to them was
to start their hunt early, go
to viewings and make sure
applications are filled out correctly
to avoid any delays.
People need rental properties
for a raft of reasons, which could
include moving into the area,
a change of circumstances, or
because their current rental
property had been sold.
In a tight rental market, some
people might have also had to
compromise on their must-haves
and may end up taking one
bedroom less or a single garage
instead of a double.
Bayleys investment sales
specialist Angela Webb said rental
stock levels are at an all-time
low due to investors selling their
properties because of the red tape
and extra costs.
Community organisations had
also started renting residential
properties at good market rates,
she said. This gave landlords
the bonus of still being
able to deduct tax from the
interest.
“That’s pulling more
stock off the standard rental
market as well, so there’s
just this short supply of
housing.”
Rents are also jumping as
Caroline a result of the shortage, she
Register said.
While people are still
buying investment properties,
Webb said they are looking for
where they could add value, such
as multi-income properties or one
that needs renovating.
“If you’ve got a standard threebedroom
house rented out to a
family, no one wants to buy that.
The returns aren’t good enough
with what the Government has
done with all the expenses it’s
costing. The fact that you can’t
claim your interest as an expense
just costs a huge amount of money
– you end up with a massive tax
bill.”
Frequently flooded streets set
• By Tony Simons
A LIST OF the 22 streets most
hit by surface flooding has been
released – and nearly half of
them are to be up-zoned to allow
medium or high-density housing
under the new planning rules.
It comes after scientists
announced 35 per cent of
Christchurch will be inundated
by 2100.
The list of streets with the
worst history of surface flooding
was released by the city council.
It revealed most of them are near
the Avon and Heathcote rivers or
on the coast.
Nine of the streets are being
rezoned to permit higher density
developments, despite the city
council’s admission it cannot fix
the existing flooding problems.
The list recommends 13
streets be protected from higher
density building because they
are in existing coastal or river
management areas or at risk
from a tsunami.
A city council spokesperson
said under the new planning
rules, which come into force next
year, it will not be able to decline
an application for higher density
buildings on these streets if it
is a permitted activity, unless
there is insufficient capacity or
infrastructure to support it.
The street list was released
INUNDATED: Tenby Place resident Heidi Oudemans said there are days when residents
are unable to leave their properties due to the ongoing flooding in Avondale. Right –
Flooding at the intersection of Bellbrook Cres and Emmett St in Shirley.
after The Star requested it
following an April city council
meeting attended by upset
residents from Avondale’s Tenby
Place Action Group. The group
was told flooding in the area may
never be practically remedied.
And recent studies also
show flooding across most of
Christchurch will get much
worse.
Dr John Reid, a senior research
fellow at the Ngāi Tahu Centre
and expert on land, freshwater,
and ocean sustainability, said
Christchurch is on a wetland
which European settlers drained
to develop the city.
But now climate change is
causing sea levels to rise. “As
the sea level rises, so, too, the
wetlands will return,” said Reid.
“In 80 years’ time, it is
predicted that about a third of
Ōtautahi Christchurch will be
vulnerable to regular flooding.
“Low-lying areas of the city –
areas that used to be wetlands –
are most at risk.”
In another recent study,
Belinda Storey, a senior
research fellow at the New
Zealand Climate Change
Research Institute, who
coined the term “insurance
retreat”, found homes in the city
with a 1 per cent chance of being
flooded are expected to find it
difficult to get insurance by 2030.
“They will seek to transfer
the liability back to the policy
holder,” she said.
“Then when the cost of
insuring against flooding gets
too great, they may decide
PHOTO: RNZ / NIVA CHITTOCK
your house is “uninsurable”
and will withdraw insurance
altogether,” she said. Insurance
is a requirement for residential
mortgages in New Zealand and
failing to maintain insurance
can trigger default.
An insurer can exit a
policy at the next renewal date,
whereas a borrower may still
have decades before their loans
are paid off.
A city council staff report has
confirmed it is not possible to
“fix flooding” and some level of
flood risk will always be present
in parts of Christchurch, even
if investment was significantly
increased.
“For example, the Flockton
St area still has street flooding
in larger events, even with $52
million council investment,” said
acting head of three waters Brent
Smith.
Smith said the city
Smith said there is a list of
Jailed for raping woman at 21st party
• By Emily Moorhouse
“BOYS LIKE you will not stop us
from standing tall and fighting
for what’s right.”
That is what a woman told the
man who raped and assaulted
her as he was sentenced to eight
years and 10 months’ in prison.
Benjovi Toa, 34, was jailed
for raping and sexually assaulting
the woman during a 21st
birthday party after he had lured
her into a dark, secluded area in
Kaiapoi.
Toa was earlier convicted of
two counts of rape and four of
unlawful sexual connection.
He had also entered late guilty
pleas to other unrelated charges,
including contravening a protection
order twice, two counts of
assault on a person in a family
relationship and one of threatening
behaviour relating to family
violence incidents.
Toa’s first victim told the court
she used to be strong and happy
and had goals in life, but Toa
took everything from her.
“I never thought I’d be part
of a statistic . . . I thought I’d be
able to fight back, but how was I
supposed to?”
In an emotional victim impact
statement, the woman who has
name suppression told the court
she was 21 at the time of the
assault. She remembered Toa
whispering to her, trying to get
her into his vehicle. Following
the assault, she lived in fear and
became paranoid. She kept a
knife under her pillow and a
metal pole nearby.
She stayed awake most nights
until she knew her father was
up as she only felt safe sleeping
when he was awake.
Every time a door opened or
someone was behind her, she
feared it was Toa. She would
walk to her car clutching a
pocket knife so hard it left a
mark on her hand. Her posttraumatic
stress disorder made it
impossible to return to work and
she had to go on a benefit. She
began losing weight because of
the stress.
She was admitted to hospital as
she became suicidal. The woman
said she was put on medication
that turned her into a zombie
just to get a few hours sleep.
She said the lengthy court
process almost made her give
up. But the pain, shame and fear
Toa made her feel meant she
“couldn’t give up this time”.
“The girl I once was is gone. I
fought so hard to find her, but it’s
like you took her . . . One thing
you can never take from me is
my resilience. You may have forgotten
what you did to me that
night – but I never will.”
Judge Stephen Bonnar commended
her bravery and courage,
apologising for the lengthy
court process. He acknowledged
nothing could change what happened,
but hoped Toa’s sentencing
could bring her some peace.
Toa continued to deny the
charges but was found guilty by
a jury in March. On July 3, 2020,
Toa raped the woman a second
time while she was pushed up
against a car.
The victim managed to send a
text to her ex-partner who contacted
someone at the party and
asked them to look for her.
At this time, she said Toa
pulled her into a bear hug, saying:
The person who had been
was your fault,” he told Toa.
Bonnar acknowledged Toa’s
childhood and background but
said the offending was “grave
and serious”.
THE CO-OWNER of
Christchurch-based Williams
Corporation, the second biggest
residential building company in
the country, has stated on social
media he imagines himself as
a Jewish business owner being
hauled off to a concentration
camp in Nazi Germany when
facing “external” issues.
Managing director and coowner
Matthew Horncastle told
his Instagram followers, after being
asked by a user how he deals
with “the media attacking” him,
that he employs the “wee mental
exercise” and reminds himself
that the world is “not just”.
The Holocaust Centre of New
Zealand said, in their view,
the comparison “belittles the
memory of six million people
murdered in the Holocaust”.
“These things are not equivalent
in any way.”
In Horncastle’s social media
story, he said: “For example,
the media attacking me or the
Government doing some form of
poor behaviour that affects me or
my business. Something external.
I have a wee mental exercise
and I imagine that I am a Jewish
business owner at the same time
as you have the Nazis.
“And I imagine if I’d worked
so hard my whole life, I’ve done
everything right, I’ve followed
the rules, I’ve saved my money,
I’ve paid my taxes and then I
get hauled off to a concentration
camp. And I remind myself that
the world’s not just and there are
bad people that do bad things
and all I can control is how I feel
about myself and what I do every
day and then I just block them
out and keep living my life and
keep doing me.”
Horncastle did not wish to
comment on the Instagram story.
Holocaust Centre of New
Zealand board chair Deborah
Hart said while she believes
Horncastle was not trying to
denigrate the Holocaust and its
victims, that is the outcome of
comparing the horror Jews and
other minorities faced in the
Holocaust with a business being
scrutinised or criticised by the
media or dealing with government
actions.
In her opinion, Hart said people
need to take care referencing
the Holocaust.
“Not every perceived injustice
is comparable to the Holocaust.
“Making the comparison,
when it is plainly so different,
belittles the memory of six
million people murdered in the
Holocaust and does nothing
to further an understanding of
the Holocaust. Neither in this
case, incidentally, does it further
an understanding of what Mr
Horncastle and his business are
experiencing.”
Hart said the Holocaust was
the deliberate attempt to exterminate
the Jews, defined by antisemitic
ideology, propaganda,
legislation, and the systematic
implementation of unprecedented
extermination techniques.
Earlier this week, Horncastle
shared an image of the BCI New
Zealand top new house builders,
which listed their Christchurch
company as the number two
residential builder.
Last year, Horncastle also
told social media followers that
women should use their “youth
and beauty” to get the “best
possible man”, but later said the
comments were “written in seconds”
and that it would be wrong
to take them “out of context”.
The property boss said in a
now-deleted Instagram story
that he believed traditional gender
roles worked.
When approached for comment
by the Herald at the time,
Horncastle said he had been
replying to “hundreds of questions”
and in that answer he was
referring to “tools the different
sexes use to attract a partner”.
He said women, people, and
relationships are more complex
than a few words on an Instagram
story.
Men, he said, value more
than just youth and beauty and
“women use more than youth
and beauty”.
Lego builders among country’s best
• By Daniel Alvey
LEGO aficionados Jason and
Rachel De Vries are among the
top builders in the country.
The couple were fourth in Lego
Masters New Zealand show on
TV2.
“We met some incredible people
and were put up against five
incredibly talented teams that
really made us work hard,” said
Rachel.
“Even though we didn’t win,
we couldn’t have been happier
with how well we did and the
experience overall.”
The show aired throughout
April. The overall winners were
siblings Oli and Charlie Mollard,
originally from Christchurch,
now based in Palmerston North.
They won two Fiat Lounge cars
and $25,000 to spend at The
Warehouse.
The De Vries own House of
Bricks in Rolleston, a Legobuilding
studio that runs a range
of events for all ages.
The show put six teams of two
and their Lego building skills
to the test, all against the clock.
Each build allowed the teams
to show off their creativity and
technical skills – but they also
had a theme to follow.
They produced eight unique
builds, showcasing their work for
judge and Lego certified professional
Robin Sather.
Out of the eight, the De Vries
had one winning build of a
fox combined with a chainsaw
called Wildtooth, with Jason’s
inspiration being old-school
Technic sets from his childhood.
“I could not be more pleased
that a simple mechanism and
concept turned out so well,”
Rachel said.
She said one of the many
highlights of the show was access
to the brick pit, which has more
than two million Lego bricks in
it.
“It is the most amazing
experience ever, two million
bricks, how could you not be
excited.”
However, Rachel said the set
was different from what they
used in their own studio, and
they had to adapt their building
style accordingly.
“Two million does sound like a
lot, but there are limitations with
that as well,” she said.
Dilo Oil – The Remarkable
Skin Rejuvenator
A Leader in Healthcare Excellence
for the Older Person
Until Rachel Hunter’s
popular TV series “TOUR
OF BEAUTY” Dilo Oil was
relatively unknown, being one
of the best-kept secrets of the
Pacific Islands. It may however
be the number one natural beauty
oil available as it possesses powerful
natural skin regeneration and healing
properties.
According to ethnobotanist Chris
Kilham, Dilo (pronounced dee-lo) Oil is a
powerful skin regenerator as it is one of the most
effective agents in promoting the regeneration
and formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating
wound healing and the growth of healthy skin.
Dilo Oil is super-absorbing and can penetrate all
three layers of the skin, offering exceptional cell
hydration and regeneration. As well as this, Dilo
Oil has potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial,
antifungal and antioxidant properties.
Traditionally, Dilo Oil is used to keep the
skin young and youthful and for just about
any skin complaint. Some of the conditions
for which it is considered helpful include
abrasions, cuts and cracks, acne and acne
scars, pimples, blemishes, stretch marks,
wrinkles, blisters, burns (including chemical
and radiation), diabetic sores, rashes,
shaving irritation, dry or scaly skin, eczema,
psoriasis, dermatitis, herpes sores (coldsores),
insect bites and
stings, rheumatism,
pain, sciatica, shingles,
sunburn, rosacea,
athlete’s foot, skin
eruptions, warts, skin
ulcers and sores, nappy
rash and almost any other skin
ailment and often with incredible
results.
Many beauty and skincare products on the
market today contain unnatural ingredients that can
be toxic and may even contribute to disease. Generally
the benefits are exaggerated and often only temporary
or camouflage. Marshall’s Dilo Oil is 100% pure and
certified organic. It has been cold-pressed from the Dilo
nut and contains absolutely no additives. Polynesians and
Southeast Asians have revered Dilo Oil for centuries
believing it to be a sacred gift of nature and the
Gods. Dilo oil stimulates and supports the
skins natural healing process through
the growth of new healthy skin tissue.
I personally believe it is a remarkable
product and highly recommend it to
everyone. A 50ml bottle is $19.90 and
100ml only $32.50.
Big clashes for rising Nomads
and high-flying Marist Albion
Jaime Cunningham
looks at the next
round of club sport
FOOTBALL
Nomads will look to continue
their recent momentum into
round 7 of the Southern League
after their first win of the season
against Green Island at the
weekend.
Although scores were locked
2-2 at halftime, Nomads
dominated the second half with
four unanswered goals by Daniel
Ede, Angus McIntyre (2) and
Niraj Basnet.
Head coach Matt Jansen said
the result was promising on the
back of Nomads’ round 5 match
against Christchurch United,
where his side nearly pulled off
the upset of the season.
“I think the difference was that
we just finished our chances,” he
said of the game against Green
Island.
It was a special match
for Nomads captain Jacob
Anderson, who made his 150th
appearance for the club’s top
team at 23.
Jansen said the milestone was
impressive at his age and believes
Anderson epitomises what
Nomads is all about.
“He’s had opportunities to
move on with other teams but
he’s stuck with us. It’s a massive
achievement,” Jansen said.
A win against Coastal Spirit on
Sunday could see eighth-placed
Nomads climb the ladder once
again.
“In our first six games we’ve
had the top four teams, and felt
we should have been competitive
against FC Twenty 11 (lost 2-0),”
Jansen said.
Although the game where
Nomads lost 1-0 to unbeaten
Christchurch United in the 96th
minute was a heartache, Jansen
said it was a positive result for
the team.
“It was nice to know those boys
can challenge the top teams.”
In other games this weekend,
second-placed Cashmere
Technical will host third-placed
Dunedin City Royals at Garrick
Memorial Park. Both teams
go into the round following
comfortable wins over Selwyn
United (2-1 v Cashmere) and
FC Twenty 11 (3-0 v Dunedin)
respectively.
Christchurch will look to
extend their unbeaten streak
against Nelson Suburbs on
Saturday after they recorded a
6-0 win over Ferrymead Bays.
Selwyn United have the
opportunity to climb into the top
half of the ladder when they play
Green Island, while FC Twenty
11 are in search of their second
win against Ferrymead Bays.
RUGBY
Metro premier leaders Marist
Albion are set to defend the DCL
Shield for the first time against
Sumner on Saturday, after they
convincingly beat High School
Old Boys’ 48-28.
Head coach Ian Robinson
was pleased with Marist’s effort
against a physical HSOB side
with a strong kicking game.
“Basically for us, it was
about moving the ball fast and
capitalising on (HSOB) mistakes,
which has been a focus,” he said.
“With strong first-five Alex
Harford and Crusader Noah
Hotham at halfback, we knew
they would kick the ball to us a
lot and we managed to score off
that.”
After leading 20-6 at halftime,
Marist managed another four
tries in the second half and
gained their third bonus point of
the season for scoring more than
four tries in a game.
Robinson believes his team’s
attacking game is a “big
strength” and will be important
when they face in-form Sumner
on Saturday. Sumner are in third
after three rounds.
“It will be awesome to defend
the DCL Shield for the first time
this week,” Robinson said.
“Sumner have a new coach
(Gareth D’almeida) and some
outstanding players like Terrence
Graham who played for the New
Zealand under-20 Barbarians
recently and Ollie Lewis who’s
been around for a while now.”
Sumner had an impressive
40-28 win over Belfast in round
3. Belfast will look to record their
first win of the season against
New Brighton.
University of Canterbury
remain undefeated and second
under Marist following a hardfought
31-29 win over Lincoln
University.
On Saturday, University face
Sydenham, who got their first
win against Shirley 50-33.
Lincoln University host
Burnside with the opportunity to
climb into the top four.
HSOB play Shirley at Bob
Deans, while Christchurch
continue to search for a win
against Linwood.
The women’s premier and
premier reserve grades see some
changes this weekend with a new
grade established.
Prebbleton, who failed to come
close to winning a game in the
premier grade, have dropped
to a new premier reserve grade
with Springston, HSOB and
Geraldine. The four teams
will play 15-a-side, while the
remaining premier reserve teams
continue playing 10-a-side.
The women’s premier grade
will now have five teams, with
one team having a bye each
week.
NETBALL
Lincoln University A and
Saints St Peters A have emerged
as the early challengers for
the premier 1 crown, as the
only unbeaten teams after two
rounds.
Defending champions Lincoln
University A won every quarter
over Kereru B and pulled away to
a 72-42 win on Tuesday night.
Kereru B had accurate
shooting once again but
could not pick up a second
win with just 58 attempts at
goal compared to Lincoln’s
mammoth 89.
Saints posted a clinical win
over winless Technical, with
Mainland shooter Tyra Dunn
making an impressive first
appearance for Saints, scoring 25
goals from 27 attempts at 93 per
cent accuracy.
UC turned around a 23-24
half-time deficit against Kereru
A and powered to their first
win of the season 53-43. It was
the first win of the season for
the 2022 finalists following
their surprise first round loss to
Kereru B.
Lincoln University B bounced
back from their loss to Lincoln
University A, beating Kia Toa
53-39. Kia Toa now sit bottom of
the ladder after two rounds, still
yet to come close to a win.
Kia Toa will have the challenge
of facing the unbeaten Lincoln
University A who will be
confident with their two large
wins so far.
The match of round 3 will be
between the two Kereru teams,
who both picked up their first
losses in round 2.
Lincoln University B will look
to stay in the premier grade with
a second win over Technical,
while the unbeaten Saints take
on UC.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Massetti Cup holders Linwood
Keas have had a successful start
to their bid to defend their title,
finishing with five wins out five,
including a strong win over the
Riccarton Knights.
The Knights, who have lost
all five games, were down 24-16
midway through the second half
but failed to challenge the Keas
for the full 80 minutes. The Keas
won 34-16.
Riccarton will look to record
their first win against the
Northern Bulldogs on Saturday.
The Bulldogs won their only
game against the Knights, 22-
12, in March. Linwood play on
Friday night against the Eastern
Eagles in round 6. The Eagles
had a strong first half in a tight
match against Halswell Hornets,
leading 10-8 at the break.
The Eagles will look to grind
out an 80 minute performance
after their halftime lead turned
into a 32-16 loss last weekend.
Halswell host the Hornby
Panthers at Halswell Domain
on Saturday, with Hornby
looking to continue momentum
following the team’s 44-8 win
over the Bulldogs in round 5.
HOCKEY
After a break last week due
to the FIH Pro League, the
Canterbury Premier League
returns with plenty of teams
desperate to record their first
win in round 3.
Hinemoa Cup-holders
Carlton Redcliffs take on
Hornby, who are yet to win a
game following a loss and draw.
Carlton Redcliffs have been
strong on defence so far, with
only one goal conceded from
their first two games.
Marist, who recently won the
Porritt Cup, took out their round
2 match against HSOB/Burnside
2-1 but were challenged after
dominating Southern 13-0 in
the opening match of the season.
They play Avon on Saturday
who, like Hornby, have lost a
game and drawn one so far.
Southern get a much-needed
bye this round following large
losses to Marist and Carlton
Redcliffs. Championship Cup
winners Harewood will take on
HSOB/Burnside.
In the men’s competition,
University and Southern will
take on each other at Marist
Park. It will likely be the match
of the round with University
already having a -10 goal
differential and Southern unable
to score a goal in the competition
so far.
Marist, who won the
Championship Cup and
President’s Shield last year, play
winless Avon, who have suffered
two 2-1 losses. Harewood look
to continue their unbeaten
streak against HSOB/Burnside,
while Carlton Redcliffs take on
Hornby.

Rugby league’s Daryl Mataiti: The
The attack on a football
referee in Sydney is in
the extreme when it
comes to the downside
of being a whistle
blower in sport. Today
Will Evans talks to a
Christchurch rugby
league referee about
why he does it
EVERY REFEREE’S ‘how’ and
‘why’ they first came to pick up a
whistle is different.
For Daryl Mataiti – who had
hung up the playing boots several
years earlier due to a knee injury
– it was returning to the game as
a volunteer in the junior space
that has led to a long and fruitful
tenure as a Canterbury Rugby
League premiers referee.
“One of my sons started playing
league, I was going to trainings
and giving them a hand,”
Mataiti recalls.
“The following year I did a bit
of coaching, then about a year
after that CRL sent out a message
to the clubs looking for junior
refs.
“It was about my third year of
refereeing when I did my first
senior games.”
He began playing for Shirley
Hawks as a 9-year-old after moving
into the area.
He played for the Hawks until
the 13s, joined Papanui Tigers for
three seasons
(the Hawks
didn’t
have a
14s team
at the
time)
and
turned out for Shirley Boys’ High,
and after a break of a few years
returned to the Shirley club for
three seasons in the senior grades
before injury intervened.
After honing his refereeing
craft in the lower grades, Mataiti
was elevated to Massetti Cup
duty in 2012. His debut
in CRL’s top flight
remains one of his most
memorable matches.
“You always
remember your first
premiers game and
for me it was the
grand finalists
from the previous
year, so that was a
little bit daunting
– Celebration
versus Halswell
at Cuthberts
Green.
“I was pretty
nervous. It
didn’t go too
bad, so
that
one
stands out.
“I’ve also done a women’s
championship final, it was good
to be involved with that. I had a
couple of 18s finals – the finals
are the big ones. And I’ve run a
few lines, for Jason Wilson for a
New Zealand versus Australian
Universities match, and at a
couple of the national finals at
NZRL junior tournaments.”
While he’s been a permanent
fixture as the man in the middle
of premiers matches for more
than a decade, many supporters
will have memories of Mataiti
haring down the touchline with
flag in hand at a string of Pat
Smith Trophy deciders in recent
years.
“Last year’s grand final was
pretty memorable in that it
went down to the last play of the
game to win it – it’s been pretty
awesome to be involved as a
touch judge in a few grand finals
as well.”
Referees embark on a long
learning curve before achieving
those sort of appointments,
however, and guidance and
mentorship is a vital part of any
whistle-blower’s progression.
Mataiti singled out a couple
of Canterbury’s most respected
referees of the modern era
as being especially helpful in
showing him the ropes and
accelerating his education as a
match official.
“Steve Toms, he was a very
good referee and he gave me a lot
of support in those early years, all
the way through.
“The rugby league community
would say in the last 15 years
Adam Burns would be the
benchmark for refereeing, and
he was also really valuable in
guiding me and being someone
to watch and aspire to.”
But every referee moulds their
own style – though generally
speaking, Mataiti says, there are
two types: a referee’s referee and a
player’s referee.
The genial, measured Mataiti is
‘I consider myself a player’s referee rather than someone
who’s too dogmatic on the rules’ – Daryl Mataiti
confident about which category
he falls into.
“I suppose I’m more in the
mould of a player’s referee in
terms of I’m a bit more patient
and tolerant with players than
some referees are.
“I try to get more of a feel
for the game than be pedantic
about the rules. I consider myself
a player’s referee rather than
someone who’s too dogmatic on
the rules.”
While an appeal from
Canterbury Rugby League for
junior refs was Mataiti’s sliding
doors moment, remaining in
the ranks for as long as he has
requires plenty of motivation and
dedication.
“I actually enjoy being put
under pressure,” he said.
Ruby Tui to play sevens in US
BLACK FERNS star Ruby Tui
will spend her sabbatical playing
sevens in the United States.
Tui played for University of
Canterbury in 2010 before she
made the Black Ferns sevens
team in 2012. The World Cup
winner and Olympic gold medallist
has now signed up for the
Premier Rugby Sevens.
The competition is held over
multiple tournaments with the
men’s and women’s teams vying
for one trophy.
Tui said she was thrilled to be
involved in competition which
provided equal opportunities for
men and women.
“I’ve been a massive fan of
Premier Rugby Sevens and what
they’ve done for women’s rugby
since they formed in 2021 in the
United States.
“To help grow our game
around the world, especially in
a place like the US, is an opportunity
I take very seriously. PR7s
has an awesome model for their
competition, with equal pay and
opportunity for men and women.
And I’m absolutely buzzing
to play some sevens again.”
Tui, 31, recently announced
she was re-signing with New
Zealand Rugby for another two
years, but she would take an immediate
sabbatical.
She will miss the Black Ferns
test against Australia on 29 June
in Brisbane due to her playing
commitments in the US.
She had taken a break from
playing after the World Cup to
pursue media opportunities and
sat out Super Rugby Aupiki.
Tui said she had multiple
offers from Europe, Asia and
Australia, but she wanted to stay
in New Zealand if possible.
The team she will play for in
the US competition is yet to
be confirmed. There are eight
franchises in the PR7s with
each aligned with a region or
city. PR7s chief executive Owen
Scannell was delighted to have
secured Tui’s services.
“Having Ruby come
and compete in Premier
Rugby Sevens at the height
of her playing career is an
unprecedented historic moment
for the sport of rugby and
women’s sports across the
United States,” Scannell said.
“She has already captured the
attention of millions of new fans
around the world.”
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
SPORT 21
highs and lows of refereeing
“You’re right in the middle of
things out there in those games
and both teams are putting pressure
on you, things are happening
fast, at pace, you’re fatigued. I
enjoy being in that environment
and testing myself to see how
well I can perform under those
positions.
“Like players, sometimes you
come off the field as a referee and
think, ‘gee, I could’ve gone a bit
better than that today’. There’s
other times you come off and
think, ‘man, I had a really good
game today and there was a
couple of really tough calls that I
got right’.
“I think that’s a part of why
I’m still involved – being a part
of the game as much as possible
at the highest level and challenging
yourself.”
The more difficult aspects of
officiating can be exacerbated by
the level of scrutiny NRL referees
come under from coaches, media
and fans – and the level of dissection
frame-by-frame coverage
allows.
While the stakes might not be
as high, it can be overlooked that
grassroots referees don’t have the
advantages those at the elite level
do and other misconceptions can
make things unnecessarily tough
for our officials.
“There’s some different rules
in the NRL to local footy and
people aren’t always aware of
those, so they’ll see something
and think the referee or touch
judge should make a particular
call when that’s not the case,”
Mataiti says.
“You see replays and multiple
angles on TV, so there’s that
expectation on Saturdays that
the guys out in the middle and
running the lines should be able
to get every call spot on. The
reality is you’re obstructed, or
something happens and you’re
not watching that particular part
of the field.
“I feel there is that scrutiny.
How many times do we see an
NRL game with a wrong call,
there’s a captain’s challenge, and
the decision is overturned? It
doesn’t always feel that forgiving
of referees (for making an incorrect
call) locally.”
But in terms of respect from
players, coaches and supporters
in the Canterbury Rugby League
sphere, Mataiti believes referees
are treated better now than in
the past.
He’s realistic about the contentious
and competitive nature
of sport, but it’s important our
officials are protected.
“I’d have to say in the last three
or four years, generally it has
improved. If you go back further
than that, five-plus years, there
were quite a few incidents during
a season where the ways referees
and touch judges were abused
was totally unacceptable.
“Referees do understand that in
Spectator punches, kicks referee
This was the damage
done to assistant referee
Khoder Yaghi after
he was punched and
kicked in the head by a
spectator at a football
match in Sydney last
Friday night.
The incident has gone
global after the assault
was filmed and put on
social media.
Amateur boxer Adam
Abdullah, 25, is facing
charges of allegedly
wounding a person with
intent to cause grievous
bodily harm and affray.
It has since emerged
Abdullah played for the
the heat of the moment, players
and (people on the) sidelines will
see something they really react to,
but having said that there’s a line
they shouldn’t cross.
“When there were quite a few
incidents happening, they were
dealt with properly – suspensions
were handed out to supporters
and players. I feel that
filtered through so that players,
coaches and supporters had a
better awareness of what wasn’t
acceptable.”
The bottom line is, in rugby
same southwest Sydney
club – the Greenacre Eagles
– as a celebrity chauffeur
who was shot dead
league as with every code, that
without referees, there is no
game. And more officials –
proudly supported in Canterbury
by NZ MEP Fabrications in
2023 – are always needed.
Mataiti implores anyone
thinking about dipping their
toe into refereeing to give it a
crack for an experience that is as
rewarding as it is challenging.
“Refereeing means you’re still
a really active part in the game.
For players who don’t have the
time to commit to playing, or
at close range outside a
MMA gym in March in
what has been described
as an underworld hit.
perhaps are not as physically able
as they were, when you’re refereeing
you don’t get the same sort
of injuries but you’re right in the
middle of things and a big part
of what is a really high-quality
game.
“And there are pathways
– some refs who are in
Christchurch are part of doing
NRL games and lines as well so
there are opportunities available
for referees who want to take it
further.”
The match will be played a
Nelson College’s quadrangular
tournament between Christ’s
the championship next week.
The teams, plus St Andrew’s
and Nelson, make up the 10-
team premiership.
Canterbury Rugby announced
the 14-team competition would
move to a 10-team competition
this season.
The change aims to address
concerns around player wellbeing.
Canterbury Rugby split
the competition into two grades
to reduce the amount of round
robin games from 13 to nine.
Rangiora High, Roncalli
College, Waimea College,
Cashmere High, Hillmorton
High and Mid Canterbury
Combined first XVs will compete
in the championship grade
along with second XVs from
Christchurch Boys’ High, St
Bede’s, St Thomas and Christ’s.
•St Andrew’s take on Nelson
at St Andrew’s field 3 at 11am
on Saturday. The rest of the
premiership and championship
games will be played next Friday
and Saturday.

Four things you MUST
do before buying a home
Buying a home is a big deal. It’s likely to be the most expensive thing you
buy, and it can be a complicated legal process. It might be tempting to
take a few shortcuts, but failing to do things properly could cause more
problems later.
Here are our top four tasks for home
buyers.
1. Research the property
The real estate agent selling the
property acts on behalf of the seller,
however they are also required to
tell you everything they know about
the property. They must respond
professionally to all your enquiries and
not withhold any details. Remember
that you still need to do your own
due diligence. That means getting a
title search so you can find out all the
facts about the property’s ownership,
boundary and access, as held by
Land Information New Zealand
(LINZ). It’s a good idea to get a Land
Information Memorandum (LIM),
which shows information held by the
local council about the property and
land. For valuable feedback on the
property’s condition, get a report done
by an inspector who has professional
indemnity insurance and carries out
their work in accordance with the New
Zealand Property Inspection Standard.
Although this all costs money, it will
save you more in the long term. Sellers
may occasionally provide some of this
information for you. If this happens,
check that it is up-to-date.
2. Get legal advice
throughout Buying property Christchurch
expensive, and it
can cost even more if something goes
wrong. That’s why it’s important to get
legal advice before you sign anything.
A lawyer will handle all the paperwork
involved in the process, including the
title search, and offer impartial advice.
If you don’t have a lawyer, the New
Zealand Law Society can help you find
one at propertylawyers.org.nz.
3. Understand the sale process
There are several methods of buying
and selling property, for example,
tender or auction. It’s important
to understand the process for the
property you are buying. Practices can
vary between agencies so make sure
you confirm details with them. The
Home Buyer’s Guide at buyingahome.
reaa.govt.nz has more helpful advice.
4. Read the sale and purchase
agreement and understand what it
means
The sale and purchase agreement
is your contract with the seller. It is
crucial to read it very carefully and get
legal advice before you sign. You can
negotiate the terms and conditions of
an agreement, but once you sign it,
there’s no going back.
With a name like Smiths City, ordinary is right there in our name.
But it’s never been in our nature. At the first sign of ordinary, we
try to do the opposite.
There’s no such thing as an ordinary bed, or an ordinary oven or
fridge – and that’s why we don’t sell ordinary products. If you’re
after a Saturday morning trampoline, a Tuesday-night-traditionmaker,
or a local community art gallery, we’re your people.
For ordinary old Smiths, we’re anything but.
