Thursday May 4 2023 The Star • By Heidi Slade ONLY TWO or three little egret birds typically come to New Zealand most years – but Wairewa-Lake Forsyth has a surplus of the rare visitors. City council ecologist Andrew Crossland was undertaking a survey of waterbirds on the lake Thursday last week when he saw three little egrets. “Little egrets probably occur on the lake about three times in a decade. The previous highest count was two birds about six or seven years ago.” Crossland said there has been a high number of sightings in New Zealand this year, due to birds in Australia dispersing because a drought cycle has followed a wet cycle and inland wetlands have dried up. “This then pushes birds to the Australian coast. Some individuals may get blown by winds or simply wander across the Tasman Sea, reaching New Zealand. That’s what’s happened with these little egrets. “In addition to the three at Lake Forsyth and another at Waikuku, others have been reported from Manawatu Estuary, Te Anau Lake, Waipapa Point, Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Historic telescope back in business • By Geoff Sloan THE HISTORIC Townsend Teece telescope badly damaged in the February 22, 2011 earthquake has been expertly restored and reinstalled back in its Arts Centre home. The half-tonne telescope was buried under 35 tonnes of rubble when the observatory tower collapsed in the quake. After a lengthy fundraising effort, more than $100,000 was raised privately to restore the rare scientific instrument and fund its installation and ongoing operation. It took more than three years of painstaking work by a Canterbury University team to bring the piece of the city’s astronomical heritage back to life. The team decided on a “sympathetic restoration”, repairing and renovating as many original parts of the telescope as possible, while keeping many of its scars from the earthquake. Associate Professor Karen Pollard said it had been a long and hard project to repair the telescope. “It’s been 12 years since we’ve had the telescope open for open-nights because it was damaged in the earthquake. And it’s been quite a voyage and a mission to get the telescope restored.” Pollard said with astronomy you think about some of the big questions like “why are we here? Is there life in the universe? How did life arise on the earth?” The public is invited to view the stars every Friday night, with tickets now on sale for sessions running through winter. Over the last 13 years, Attwood has only seen little egrets on two other occasions. This was the first time he has seen more than one, at once. “We seem to be having what birders call an influx.” Little egrets are about half the size of white herons. The amateur ornithologist owns the guided birdwatching company Auldwood Birds. He received a message last week, letting him know there were little egrets at the lake. “A lot of people tell me if they see unusual birds.” Little egrets tend to come for their non-breeding season and only stay for the late autumn and winter, he said. Occasionally some will stick around. These are likely to be juveniles, birds that have not yet reached breeding age. NEWS 3 In Brief Cyclist seriously injured A cyclist suffered a serious leg injury in a crash with a car yesterday morning. The collision happened intersection of Travis Rd and Bassett St in Burwood, at about 6.35am. Police said they were speaking to the driver of the car as part of their investigation. Christchurch to get Lego store Christchurch is set to become the home of New Zealand’s second Lego store in the coming months. The store will take up 259sq m of mall space in Westfield Riccarton. Lego Group Australia and New Zealand general manager Troy Taylor said the Riccarton store “will be an incredible experience for all” and said the company was “delighted to showcase” Lego’s newest products. The first store was opened in 2019 in Auckland. • Lego exponents, page 15 Alleged dog walker attack Police are refusing to say if they are closer to identifying the motorist who allegedly ran down a person and their dog in Lincoln last month. A police spokesperson said inquiries into the incident were “ongoing”. Last week police said more CCTV footage had been provided by the public, which was being assessed for leads. Police would like to hear from anyone that may have been in the Springs Rd or Southfield Drive area on April 14 and seen the alleged incident. Reference file number 230417/5725. Missing man found dead A Rangiora man who was missing for almost three days has been found dead. Police said Jan, 66, was found deceased in Rangiora on Wednesday.
