Paddle to the metal
on the lake – and surf
• By Jaime Cunningham
DYLAN MONK only took up
flatwater kayaking to keep fit
for surf life saving.
But the 16-year-old is now
one of New Zealand’s most
promising sprint kayakers with
15 national, Oceania and Asia
Pacific titles 11 months after
taking up the sport.
“I only really started
kayaking over the winter to
improve my fitness and my
paddling for surf ski,” he
said.
“I got into it through surf
life saving, which I’ve done for
seven years.”
The South Brighton surf life
saver won the under-17 surf ski
event at the Canterbury surf
life saving championships in
February – while training for
sprint kayak events.
Monk, who represents Arawa
Canoe Club, had 20 podium
finishes across under-16 and
under-18 events at the New
Zealand and Oceania canoe
sprint championships and Asia
Pacific Sprint Cup on Lake
Karapiro two weeks ago.
Two buyers go head-to-head for
‘family perfect’ character home
• By Nikki Preston
THE OWNERS of a character
home in Strowan where
properties don’t hang around
for long netted an almost extra
$100,000 after two buyers went
head-to-head for the property
just two-and-a-half weeks after it
hit the market.
The auction for the “family
perfect” four-bedroom, twobathroom
home on
Brenchley Ave was brought
forward after an acceptable
offer of $1.419 million
was made.
But that offer was
knocked out last week
when another buyer
bid against them and
eventually won the
property for $1.505m.
The two bidders battled it out
with bids of around $10,000 and
then later in smaller increments
of several thousand dollars each.
It was secured with a final $5000
bid.
Bayleys listing agent Sara Ashcroft
said it was an outstanding
result.
“Both the owners and the buyers
are really happy.”
The bungalow had been
popular with families due to the
great school zoning and location,
as well as couples wanting to
retire into the area.
“You had a bit of a crosssection
there, but there was
strong interest from people
coming in,” said Ashcroft.
A lot of the properties in the
area were family homes, but
people tended to stay in them
throughout their
children’s schooling as
it was zoned for both
Christchurch Boys’ and
Christchurch Girls’
High Schools.
“Things through
there sell. Things that
work for family homes
they come up and they
sell. Very seldom are
they hanging around
unless someone’s got totally
unrealistic expectations, but they
are sought-after, and they sell.”
Last month a five-bedroom,
three-bathroom home on
Westall Lane in Avonhead
broke the record for the suburb
when the out-of-town owners
paid $2.2m for the property
to be their family home at
auction.
Riccarton High doubles target for
Cyclone Gabrielle fundraiser
• By Darryl Baser
RICCARTON High School
students have nearly doubled
their initial $10,000 target to help
people in the Hawkes Bay and
Gisborne districts in the wake of
Cyclone Gabrielle.
The school held a work day
with students who took part
earning money for the school to
send to those in need.
Principal Neil
Hayward was
“blown away”
with the result.
“With money
still coming in
from students
who worked
Neil
Hayward
extra shifts
at their after
school jobs, the
current total is
$19,770,” Hayward said.
Eighty per cent of the school’s
980 learners contributed with
the goal of each student bringing
in $20. Hayward said some went
above and beyond, raising up to
$200 each.
“I am immensely proud of the
fantastic response to our workday,
not only by the students
themselves, but also by members
of our school and the wider community
who got behind the cause
with many offering employment
for the day,” he said.
Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle left
a trail of devastation across the
North Island in February, with
11 people reported to have died
as a result.
Towns and cities were cut off,
livestock and crops were swept
away, and telecommunication
networks failed. The Government
has estimated the financial
cost of the damage to be around
$13 billion.
Hayward said the school
wanted to do something to help
the communities devastated by
the event.
“We felt it was our time
to give back; it’s part of our
Riccarton way to be giving
service to our wider community.
We also remember how much
North Island schools helped
Christchurch schools after the
2011 earthquakes.”
He said the school wanted to
focus on education.
“The money is still with us, but
we’re giving some to the Hawke’s
Bay Principals Association,
as well as to a couple of kura
kaupapa Māori schools in the
Tairāwhiti (Gisborne) district,
which were devastated in the
event.”
Hayward said the school was
pleased to be able to help people
and communities in need.
“It was an amazing effort, and
we were unsure how (it would)
pan out in these tough economic
times.”
He said some of their learners
did chores at home, some worked
at other schools, and others were
employed by local businesses.
Hayward said it is something
the school will definitely look
at doing again, should the need
arise.
Festival opens doors in the west
OPEN Christchurch, the
annual festival of architectural
excellence, returns this weekend
with a celebration of the city’s
architecture – including several
buildings from Canterbury
University, which marks its
150th year.
This year’s festival, presented
by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture
and City Making,
explores 159 years of education
architecture through its programming
– from the oldest educational
building still in use in
New Zealand (Christ’s College’s
Big School, 1863) to an exemplar
campus rebuild that captures
the diversity of its students at Te
Aratai College (2022).
Among the 50 buildings to feature
in the programme are four
from the Ilam campus.
The campus makes a great stop
for those looking to view multiple
buildings.
Angus Tait building (formerly
Data Centre) is a distinctive
modernist building, designed
in 1966 by an often-overlooked
firm, Hall and Mackenzie, a
practice that contributed many
strong works to Christchurch
architecture, including the
Macmillan Brown Library, also
on campus.
The latter will be displaying
architectural drawings from
their collections on bookable,
behind-the-scenes tours.
The Brutalist beacon, the
Puaka James Hight central
library, returns with on-demand
tours from staff, while the Ernest
Rutherford building represents
contemporary campus architecture.
All are open on Sunday
from 11am-2pm. Free, walk-up
engineering innovation tours are
also on offer at the campus and
are a chance to walk around with
engineering lecturer Giuseppe
Lopocaro, to see what the campus
has achieved.
Also out west are buildings
that provide windows into other
cultures. The ever-popular Fo
Guang Shan Buddhist temple
(Warren and Mahoney, 2005-6),
with its Longmen Grottoinspired
Buddha and Bodhisattva
carvings, is an oasis of calm
where Buddhist values are translated
into western architecture.
With many displays and an excellent
vegetarian cafe on-site, it
makes for a great family outing.
In Wigram, Fonua Mana Tongan
Church opens its doors on
Saturday, 11am-2pm. Architect
Michael O’Sullivan said when
the people of Tonga come together
to celebrate and worship,
it is with huge energy. Accordingly,
architectural vitality is
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH: Canterbury University’s Ernest Rutherford building and Puaka James Hight central library (below)
highly relevant for this gathering
space – all efforts have been
made to ensure colour, texture
and atmosphere have been well
represented. O’Sullivan will be
giving a free architecture tour on
Saturday at 1pm for those wishing
to find out more.
In an effort to open the city to
more people during the festival,
Te Pūtahi has worked with partners
in the disability sector and
appointed an accessibility advisor.
The 2023 programme has
improved accessibility information
for all 50 buildings on offer.
Apart from a handful of limited
entry buildings and guided
walks, Open Christchurch is
free. The programme includes
more than 30 activities – talks,
tours and exhibitions.

canoe sprint championships. PHOTO: KARLENE ROGERS
Young kayaker sets
sights on Olympics
•From page 1
“It was such a good experience.
Hopefully I can just continue
with it,” the Shirley Boys’ High
student said.
The four-day event saw Monk
represent Arawa and New Zealand
against competitors from
New Zealand, Singapore, Japan
and Australia. Alongside eight
national titles, Monk also won the
16-and-under K1 (single) 500m,
K1 200m and K4 (four-person)
200m races at the Oceania championships,
and the K1 500m and
K4 200m for New Zealand in the
Asia Pacific Sprint Cup.
Although Monk always believed
some of his team boats
would do well, he was surprised
by some of his personal results.
“In some of the individual ones,
like the 500m, and especially the
(individual) 200m race, I didn’t
expect to win,” he said.
Monk also won a national title
with his younger brother Lewis,
14, in the 16-and-under K2
(double) 500m race. “It was really
good – and obviously winning
was a bonus as well,” he said.
With the kayaking race season
over until December, Monk will
continue to train six days a week
in a bid to represent New Zealand
again in the summer.
“I’d like to qualify for the next
Asia Pacific championships, and
maybe the junior world champs
the year after,” he said.
Monk has taken a similar
path to five-time Olympic gold
medallist Lisa Carrington, who
also took up to kayaking as a surf
life saver. The idea of representing
New Zealand at the Olympics is
in Monk’s sights – but not in his
immediate future just yet.
“I’ll just have to take it year-byyear
and see where it takes me.”
First XI stars selected for
World Cup qualifiers
• By Jaime Cunningham
PROMISING cricketers Ben
Breitmeyer and Cameron Paul
have been selected to represent
New Zealand at the under-19
Cricket World Cup qualifiers.
Breitmeyer, a former Christ’s
College student, and Paul, who
was at St Andrew’s College
till last year, are the only
Canterbury players to make in
the squad of 14 who will head
to Australia on June 9. Connor
Stewart (St Bede’s College) has
been named as a reserve.
Breitmeyer and Paul were
integral members of their first
XI sides. Fast-bowler Breitmeyer
was part of the Christ’s College
side who won the Gillette Cup in
December.
Although St Andrew’s College
did not qualify for the Gillette
Cup, Paul was in the 2021 first
XI side who beat Christ’s College
to represent Canterbury
at the New Zealand secondary
schools’ tournament.
Paul and Breitmeyer played
for Canterbury at the national
under-19 tournament in January.
They both study at Lincoln
University as cricket scholars.
The New Zealand under-19
team are aiming to qualify
for the 2024 World Cup in Sri
Lanka following New Zealand
Cricket’s decision to opt out
of last year’s tournament due
to Covid-19 and player wellbeing
issues. The squad will be
coached by Jonny Bassett-Graham,
with support from Graeme
Aldridge and Paul Wiseman.
They must top a pool
consisting of Fiji, Indonesia,
Japan, Papua New Guinea,
Samoa and Vanuatu to qualify
for the World Cup. The New
Zealand under-19s take on
Japan in their first match on
Wigram candidate relishes a challenge
Christchurch accountant and businesswoman
Tracy Summerfield has been selected as the National
Party candidate to represent the Wigram electorate in
this year’s general election.
Having grown up in Hornby, where she attended
Sockburn Primary, Branston Intermediate and Hornby
High, Tracy says she feels a deep connection with
people across the Wigram electorate.
“While my family was not financially wealthy,
I was fortunate to have supportive, hard-working
parents, who instilled in me the importance of a good
education and the value of a hard day’s work, personal
responsibility and equal opportunity for every person
to succeed – all strong National Party values.”
From the age of 14, Tracy worked at Meadow
Mushrooms during the school holidays and weekends
which helped fund her university studies. She
graduated from the University of Canterbury with a
Bachelor of Commerce (accounting), following this up
with a Master of Business Administration eight years
later.
Tracy spent many years working in financial and
senior leadership roles in both the public and private
sectors. Then, in 2009, she and husband Gavin, with
four children under six, including twins, decided to
open an early childhood education centre.
“I relish a challenge,” she says.
Tracy returned to university, gaining a Graduate
Diploma of Teaching ECE, and over the following
12 years she and Gavin opened a further two early
childhood education centres.
They sold the three businesses in 2021.
“Much that I have achieved in life has been due to
sheer grit, tenacity and determination,” Tracy says.
“Growing up with red hair, freckles, glasses and
braces also meant I developed a pretty tough veneer!
“At this point in my life, I wish to enter politics not
only to give something back to my community, but
also because I believe there is no greater platform than
as an MP with the opportunity to contribute to good
public policy, which can improve the lives of New
Zealanders.”
Not restricted by inflexible political thinking, Tracy
says she believes in the importance of scanning for
ideas that may lie in the periphery of people’s vision.
“I am open-minded and interested in seeing what
works.
To me, a challenge is an opportunity to bring about
change for the better.
“I believe the Wigram electorate needs a strong voice
in Parliament to represent the needs of its constituents
and to promote legislation that enables families and
businesses to get ahead.”
Since her selection in March, Tracy has enjoyed
meeting local residents and business owners, listening
to their concerns and gaining an understanding of
local issues.
“The common things I hear about are the cost-ofliving
crisis, rising crime, and worsening outcomes in
health and education. Like many of you, I share these
concerns.
“I’m standing as a candidate for the National Party
as I believe National is the only party with a plan and
the ability to deliver the strong economy required to
decrease the cost of living, lift incomes for all, restore
law and order, build infrastructure and deliver better
health and education.
“Please feel free to contact me to discuss any issues
important to you, and as you see me out and about in
the electorate please come and say hello.”
“It all begins again here and
Jo and myself are eager to work
with this group of players and
watch their progress.”
Tuck into uncomplicated autumn fare
Nigel Slater says
autumn is an
opportunity to bring
out unfussy food
Baked apples with maple
syrup and cream
Serves 4
Pumpkin (or squash)
rolls with pomegranate
molasses
These are similar to sausage
rolls, but filled with pumpkin or
squash instead. It is important
to use a firm-fleshed pumpkin
or squash, so it keeps its shape
inside the pastry. Just make sure
to let it cool and firm up before
you use it.
Makes 12
Ingredients
For the pumpkin:
1kg butternut squash or pumpkin
(peeled weight)
½ tsp aleppo pepper
3 spring onions
325g puff pastry
1 egg, beaten
2 tsp nigella seeds
For the dipping sauce:
4 tsp pomegranate molasses
1 clove garlic
5 Tbsp olive oil
Juice of ½ lemon
2 tsp grain mustard
A large baking sheet
Directions
Put a deep pan of water on to
boil and place a steamer basket
or colander over it, covered with
a lid. Cut the squash or pumpkin
into 5cm pieces and steam for
about 25-30 minutes until tender
to the point of a knife.
Transfer the cooked squash,
still in its steamer, to drain over
a mixing bowl. Then put the
squash into a bowl and using a
potato masher or a fork, crush
to a thick mash. Season with
salt, black pepper and the aleppo
pepper. Finely chop and add the
spring onions. Set aside to cool.
The mash must be firm and cold
before you use it. If it isn’t then
drain it further over a bowl in
the fridge.
Roll the puff pastry into a
rectangle approximately 35 x
25cm, then turn the pastry so the
longest side is facing you. Cut in
half lengthways (to give 2 strips
of pastry 35 x 12.5cm). Spoon
half the squash in a line along
the edge of the pastry facing you,
about 2cm from the edge. Brush
the pastry edge with beaten egg,
then roll up tightly into a long
sausage, sealing the pastry edges
together with more of the egg.
Repeat using the second piece
of pastry and the remaining
squash. Place in the fridge for 40
minutes. (Don’t be tempted to
skip this step.)
Set the oven at 200 deg C and
place a baking sheet in the oven.
Remove the rolls of pastry
from the fridge and slice each
one into six short lengths. Using
TASTY: It’s important to
a palette knife, transfer the rolls
to the heated baking sheet. Brush
lightly with more beaten egg,
then cut a small slit in the top
of each and sprinkle with the
nigella seeds.
Bake in the preheated oven for
25-30 minutes until the pastry is
golden and puffed. Remove and
leave to rest for a few minutes
before transferring to a serving
plate or board.
Make the dip:
Put the pomegranate molasses
in a small saucepan with the
garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and
mustard, bring to the boil, then
pour into a small dish. Dip each
roll into the sauce as you eat.
Ingredients
6 apples, sweet and mediumsized
45g butter
3 Tbsp maple syrup
250ml cream
½ tsp
1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions
Set the oven at 200 deg C.
Using a sharp knife, score each
apple 1cm down from the stem.
This will allow the flesh to puff
up as it bakes. Then place them,
just touching, in a baking dish.
Melt the butter in a small pan,
then remove from the heat and
spoon over the apples. Bake until
the apples have puffed up and
their flesh is soft and frothy. The
exact timing will depend on the
variety of apple, so start checking
after 25-30 minutes. The
occasional baste with the buttery
juices in the baking dish is a
thoroughly good thing.
When the apples are nearly
ready, pour the cream into a small
saucepan, add the maple syrup,
ground cinnamon and vanilla
extract. Bring to the boil and let it
bubble for a minute, then spoon
over the baked apples.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
Start dreaming of driving electric
BUILD YOUR Dreams –
abbreviated to BYD, that’s the
name for one of the newest
entrants into New Zealand’s
electric vehicle market.
More specifically, the BYD
Atto3 is the key model here
for the all-electric Chinese car
building company, and it’s a
tidy, stylish sport utility vehicle
that already I’m seeing in good
numbers on our roads. If you are
wondering where Atto comes
from, it is inspired by the Attosecond
– the smallest time scale
unit in physics – and according
to BYD it represents speed, energy
and dynamics.
The Atto3 lands here in two
model variants distinguished by
their battery size. The extended
range vehicle incorporates the
larger of the lithium-ion battery
capacities – a 60kWh unit –
giving a 420km range and the
standard battery unit – 50kWh
– providing a range of 345km.
Both models are driven by a
single motor powering the front
wheels, there is 150kW of power
on tap with 310Nm of torque
in both, offering a standstill to
100km/h time of 7.3sec.
Prices start at $55,490 for the
standard model, the extended
range variant adds $4500. Those
prices both easily qualify for the
full New Zealand Government
Clean Car Programme rebate of
$8625.
Specification items are numerous,
I can report that for
its price there’s a good level of
fitment. The evaluation car was
the range-topper, but most of
what is in that is also included
in the entry-level model, it’s
just the battery capacity that is
different and the colour choices
vary from level to level. For
those of you who like to see the
stars when you’re travelling at
night, the Atto3 gets a full length
panoramic roof, along with
heated and electric seats, keyless
entry and ignition, and electric
tailgate, just to mention a few of
the major items. When you take
into account the value you get for
the money, it’s no wonder BYD
is showing much appeal in this
country.
The interior is very space age.
The design and trim elements are
styled with ideas that I’ve never
seen before in any car. I particularly
like the guitar strings that
are fitted to the front doors, you
can play music to the beat of the
radio while sitting at the everincreasing
traffic light queues.
I travelled 200km in the evaluation
vehicle, when I picked it
up there was 86 per cent charge
on the battery capacity display
offering a distance to empty of
400km. It panned out so that
plugging in for several hours
each night meant I could keep
the batteries well within a range
that minimised anxiety, although
at a short 4m, the domestic
cable is only just long enough
to reach my garage plug.
Of course, fast charging at a
designated port will boost the
batteries from 20 to 80 per cent
in around 30min.
A good friend of mine who
lives in Australia has had a
hefty deposit on an Atto3 for six
months and there’s still no sign
of his car arriving, but every
market is different and I’d like to
think that any prospective buyer
here will be satisfied with their
buying experience.
“I haven’t heard this clearly for years!”
(Comment from one of our many
satisfied clients recently)
We change lives all day, every day.
Hearing loss can creep up on you very gradually,
quite often over several years. The first signs of this
are often a reduction in speech clarity, or difficulties
conversing with people in social situations, such as a
restaurant or family gathering. Other early signs are
ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or a gradual increase in
your TV volume level. These issues can be very
frustrating, and are often first noticed by your family.
We take the time to listen to you and your needs;
understand that one size does not fit all, and always
do everything at your pace. There is a good reason
we have so many wonderful 5 star Google reviews.
Come have a chat with us at The Hub, 418 Main
South Road, Hornby (between Japan Mart & BNZ).
