ADDICTION
13-year-old’s
800km
trip in
stolen car
‘I just love it’
• By Sam Sherwood
A 13-YEAR-OLD girl involved
in an 800km trip in a stolen car
from Christchurch to Nelson
and back told police she was
“just addicted”.
Four youths, aged between
13 and 15, are believed to have
stolen a car in Christchurch on
Saturday night before driving
to Nelson where they ramraided
a petrol store.
The teens fled the scene, and
were found in Christchurch
when police received a report
of a vehicle being driven
erratically on Grahams Rd,
Burnside, about 10.15am.
The driver of the car failed to
stop for police when signalled
to do so. Police did not initiate
a pursuit, instead observing
the vehicle’s movements. The
car crashed into a member of
the public’s car, with the driver
suffering minor injuries.
The offenders then attempted
to flee on foot, however they
were apprehended by police.
The teens will be referred to
youth services.
It is understood the 13-yearolds,
a boy and a girl, were also
involved in a series of car thefts
a week earlier when about three
cars were stolen, including
several petrol drive-offs, as well
as two fleeing driver incidents,
where police tried to spike them.
After they were apprehended
the 13-year-old girl told police
“I love it, I’m just addicted,” it
is understood.
SWEARING OUT loud is
a no-no when it comes to
morning television – but the
unpredictability of live TV means
it can happen to the best of us.
Breakfast host Matty McLean
accidentally dropped the f-bomb
during the show’s live broadcast
yesterday in front of his co-hosts,
after he appeared to drop his mic
after an ad break.
“Oh f***, my thing’s fallen
out,” he said without realising he
could be heard by viewers.
Jenny-May Clarkson quickly
reminded him, “You’re on air,
you’re on air, you’re on air!”
McLean was quick to apologise
to viewers for the slip-up, saying,
“Welcome back to Breakfast, I’m
so sorry, I just lost my communications,”
before presenting the
next story on the programme,
about anti-monarchist protesters
at the King’s coronation.
But fans of the show – and
of McLean – found the slip-up
entertaining and applauded his
speedy recovery.
“Dropped the ball but great recovery
Maddy (sic),” one viewer
commented on Twitter. “Loved
Jenny-May screaming in the
background, ‘you’re on air, you’re
on air’.”
A spokesperson for TVNZ
said in a live TV environment,
“mistakes can happen” and
the Breakfast team had a busy
morning reporting on the wild
weather hitting New Zealand.
“Matty did not realise the
programme had returned from
an ad break and this one slipped
out when he dropped his comms
device. When Jenny May alerted
her co-presenters to the show being
back on air, Matty apologised
to our viewers,” they said.
“We’re sorry if anyone was
upset by this mishap. Matty has
Leaf those contractors alone
CHRISTCHURCH is renowned
for its beautiful deciduous trees –
but they come at a price over the
autumn.
The wet weather and wild
winds have seen leaves falling
more often, and earlier, this year
– and it seems people are not
happy to see the leaf litter lying
around.
The city council says contractors
tasked with cleaning up the
leaves from footpaths, gutters
and sumps have been abused.
Said city council streets maintenance
manager Steve Guy:
“We cannot stress enough that
contractors are pulling out all
the stops to make sure these are
swept away as quickly as possible.
“Our contractors are working
to clear the leaves as quickly as
they can and while we certainly
appreciate residents’ frustrations,
it is equally frustrating for staff to
clean streets, gutters and sumps
only for a southerly change to
blow through and 24 hours later
“Our teams are out there working
as hard and as fast as they
The number of sweeper trucks
across the city has increased.
“Staff are targeting the streets
It’s not the first swearing
The Broadcasting Standards
It turns out complaints about
bleeped out of songs played on
Blackmoore
murder
trial ends
abruptly
• By Kurt Bayer
THE TRIAL of two people
accused of murdering Angela
Blackmoore in her Wainoni home
in 1995 has been aborted.
Former debt collector David
Hawken, 50, and ex-stripper
Rebecca Wright-Meldrum, 51, had
denied murdering Blackmoore
on August 17, 1995, and were
standing trial in the High Court at
Christchurch.
The jury trial, scheduled to take
four weeks, began last week. They
heard from 18 witnesses before it
was halted. Yesterday afternoon,
Justice Cameron Mander told the
jury the trial had been aborted and
they were free to go.
“I made the decision, after having
heard from the counsel, to
abort this trial. I can’t go into the
details with you as to why this has
arisen, except to broadly indicate
that material has come to hand
which counsel needs the opportunity
to review.”
“It’s unavoidable that this step
has to be made,” he said.
It’s understood that a new trial
could potentially begin in November.
For 25 years the case went
unsolved before police suddenly
received fresh information in 2019
and Jeremy Crinis James Powell
was arrested.
He pleaded guilty and was jailed
for at least 10 years for bludgeoning
and stabbing Blackmoore 39 times.
During the trial, the Crown alleged
Hawken ordered Powell – who
was due to be a key Crown witness
in the case – to carry out the
hit, offering to pay $10,000, while
Wright-Meldrum, a close friend
and ex-lover of Blackmoore, helped
him gain entry to her house.
It was alleged that Hawken
wanted Blackmoore out of the
way so he could profit from a
property deal. Hawken’s defence
counsel Anne Stevens KC said that
Hawken had nothing to do with
Blackmoore’s murder and that he
had “no wish that she die”.
Party-goer recalls man with gun
• By Sam Sherwood
A MAN WHO appeared to be
wearing a mask was allegedly
waving a shotgun at a crowd
of teenagers shortly before an
innocent bystander was shot
dead, a jury has heard.
Connor Whitehead, 16,
was shot dead at a party in
Casebrook on November 5, 2021.
Daniel Nelson Sparks and
Joshua David Craig Smith
are charged with murdering
Whitehead.
On Monday, a three-week jury
trial began in the High Court
at Christchurch before Justice
Melanie Harland. The pair
pleaded not guilty to the charges
before the trial started.
Yesterday, the court heard
from one of the party-goers. The
boy said his evening started at
his house with a couple of mates
before going to a friend’s home
who told them about the party.
The group were dropped off
at the party, with the party-goer
speaking to a man who lived at
the address when he arrived. He
said the adult told him: “This is
my house, just make sure you
respect it.”
He then went outside and saw
Whitehead in the driveway and
ACCUSED: Daniel Nelson Sparks and Joshua David Craig Smith are charged with
murdering Connor Whitehead.
PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD
the two had a short catch-up.
Later that evening, there was a
tussle outside which party-goers
watched, he said.
“It’s just what happens at every
party to be honest,” the young
man said.
The teen went inside the house
and when he came back out he
saw a car pull up with a man
getting out armed with a gun.
Another man was heard yelling
“yoza”, he said.
“I think they were trying to
scare us,” he said.
He heard one of the partygoers
saying: “Just shoot me,
you’re a b.... – you won’t.”
People were also throwing
bottles at the men’s car.
The party-goer said the man,
who appeared to be wearing a
mask with a cap, a black hoodie
and pants, was waving a gun
around. The party-goer did not
think the shotgun, which he
believed was black, was loaded.
“I wasn’t really that fazed by
it. I just thought it was a scare
tactic.”
A short while later he heard a
gunshot and hid behind a tree.
There was a second shot and he
heard someone yell: “Connor’s
dead.”
The party-goer ran over to
Whitehead who wasn’t moving.
At first, he thought he may have
been unconscious from being
too drunk, but then he saw the
blood.
“It was pretty scary thing to
see,” the teen said.
Everyone around him was
“panicking”, he said.
The party-goer said after the
first shot was fired the men drove
off and the passenger’s door was
still open when the second shot
was fired.
The Crown alleges both
men received a call for help
from Sparks’ son by arming
themselves with loaded firearms
– a Stevens shotgun and a
Mossberg shotgun in Smith’s
VW Golf.
About 11pm, the two accused
men arrived at the party.
Sparks’ son pointed out
the group of people acting
aggressively towards him. Sparks
approached them and there
was a verbal argument. Gang
signs were pulled and there was
yelling.
Crown prosecutor Aaron
Harvey began the trial on
Monday before six men and six
women by saying two shots were
fired, one by each of the firearms,
one by each of the defendants.
The two shots were about six
seconds apart. The Crown says
the most likely scenario is Smith
fired the fatal shot that struck
Whitehead and Sparks fired a
shot from the Mossberg into the
air, likely from the car.
Whitehead was shot in the
chest. His injuries were not survivable.
There was no suggestion
Whitehead was at all involved in
the disorder and was standing
between 9 -12m away when the
firearm was discharged at him.
After the second shot was fired
the two men left the scene.
After the fatal shooting police
used emergency powers to intercept
calls. A few hours after the
shooting a call was intercepted
between Sparks, Smith, and an
associate.
Smith said he had a run-in
with the Crips, saying 30 or 40 of
them came out of nowhere and
surrounded them. Shots were
fired, and someone may have
been hit.
In his interview, Smith said he
did not fire any shots.
Sparks said he got out of the
car and, while out of the car,
heard a shot being fired. After he
heard the shot being fired he got
his firearm and fired a shot in
the air before they left.
Harvey said both men could
be found guilty of murder,
regardless of who fired the fatal
shot.
Smith’s lawyer Daniel Kirby
said his client accepted he was
responsible for Whitehead’s
death. However, he said his client
was guilty of manslaughter, not
murder.
“Mr Smith never intended to
kill Connor. He never intended
to cause Connor bodily harm,
FATAL:
Connor
Whitehead
was
attending
a 15th
birthday
party when
he died.
and he never thought that
Connor or anyone else would be
likely to die.”
He said Smith lied in his police
interview from his hospital
bed, but that did not mean he
was a murderer. Sparks’ lawyer
Nicola Pointer said he did not
fire the fatal shot, and he had
no idea things would unfold the
way they did. “What occurred
went well beyond any common
purpose that could’ve existed
between the men when they
travelled to the party.”
Sparks said he got a distressed
call from his son asking for help.
He heard a gunshot, quickly
returned to the car, and grabbed
the Mossberg, discharging a
round into the air to scatter the
crowd so they could leave.
Poll: National and
Act could govern
Beethoven
PIANO
CONCERTO CYCLE
THE LATEST political poll has National
nudging past Labour and able to form a
government with the Act Party.
But voters still don’t appear to be resonating
with National leader Christopher
Luxon, who is at his lowest favorability
rating since becoming leader in November
2021.
The latest Taxpayers’ Union-Curia poll
was released yesterday, revealing Labour
had dropped just over three points in
the past month to 33.8 per cent of the
party vote, falling behind National which
dropped by just under one point to 35.6
per cent.
The big winner was Act, bumping up 3.2
points to 12.7 per cent. The results would
mean National at 46 seats and Act on 16
could form a government with 62 out of
the 120 seats.
The Green Party was relatively stable at 7
per cent (up 0.3 points since April). Te Pāti
Māori was on 3.7 per cent, up 0.8 points.
Those results for Parliament’s current
left-wing parties would see Labour get 44
seats, the Green Party nine seats and Te
Pāti Māori five seats.
While the centre-right would be in a
position to form a government, Prime
Minister and Labour leader Chris Hipkins
continues to prove far more popular than
National’s Luxon.
Hipkins’ net favourability score was
positive 22 per cent – six points lower than
last month and down 11 points on his
March peak of positive 33 per cent.
Luxon meanwhile was at negative 7 per
cent, meaning more people gave him an
unfavourable rating than favourable.
This was his lowest level since he became
National Party leader in November 2021.
Act Party leader David Seymour was on
negative 11 per cent.
Among National voters, Hipkins had a
slightly positive net favourability rating of
7 per cent while Luxon had a score of negative
56 per cent with Labour voters.
Among undecided voters, Hipkins had
a positive net favourability of 30 per cent,
while Luxon was on negative 26 per cent.
The poll was conducted between May 2
and May 7 and included 1000 respondents.
After they were apprehended the
13-year-old girl told police “I love it, I’m
just addicted”, it is understood.
The 13-year-old boy is also believed to
have been involved in joyriding a stolen
car to Oamaru and then back to Christchurch,
a trip of about 500km.
A source said the boy’s offending was
“escalating”.
“He’s just going for it.”
Driving from Christchurch to Nelson
and back in stolen cars was “just Russian
roulette”, the source said.
“We have so many crashes with your
average driver through the Lewis Pass . .
. It’s a long drive, it’s going to be tedious,
and for a young person who probably has a
very short attention span that’s going to be
a lot of effort to keep it on the road.”
It was previously revealed a 9-year-old
was believed to be involved in one of many
groups of youth offenders behind a series
of car thefts and burglaries in Christchurch.
A police source said staff were seeing a
“continual drop in age” in youth offenders.
“I think that’s a very concerning aspect
because for us it’s now dropping very
strongly into that non-prosecutable group
and that’s causing us headaches because
we can’t bring any control to that, we can’t
bring any meaningful accountability.
“There is still the activeness of the
higher age level which just continues on as
it always has, but this younger group what
we are seeing is just that repetitive nature
of their offending because they’re getting
caught, they’re getting returned home and
they’re out and gone within hours and
back into the offending.”
Police were involved in a number of
initiatives aimed at preventing youth offending
and reoffending, said Canterbury
metro area commander Superintendent
Lane Todd.
“We recognise that in order to prevent
future generations of young people from
serious harm, we need to work in a collaborative
way to address the underlying
causes of youth offending.”
City council admits it doesn’t know
height of shipping container stacks
• By Tony Simons
THE CITY council isn’t sure
how high the shipping container
stacks are at the Portlink
industrial site in Woolston,
despite there being an 11-metre
building height limit for the site
under the District Plan.
Nearby residents are upset
and angry the city council is
allowing container stacks up to
six high on the land adjacent
to their homes, but city council
planning and consents boss John
Higgins said the fact the council
doesn’t know the exact height
of the stacks doesn’t change the
council’s view.
“They are allowed to stack to
six containers high at the moment,”
he said.
That decision was made by the
city council in November, pending
the outcome of a resource
consent application.
“I can’t see there’s been
reference to an actual height
(in the resource consent), only
the number of containers,” said
Higgins.
Investigations by The Star
show operators are stacking containers
at least 11.6m high, with
most up to 17.4m.
“The current situation is just
temporary to allow the resource
process to be completed,” said
Higgins.
The industrial park sits between
the Ōpāwaho Heathcote
River and Tunnel Rd.
Residents to the east are also
upset by noise at the site.
High property developer Richard
Peebles’ company Braeburn
Property owns the land.
After residents complained,
Peebles lodged the resource
consent application, asking to
be allowed to build the stacks
higher than the authorised 11m.
He also wants permission
to store containers four high
Left – The Woolston
industrial site two weeks
ago, with containers
stacked six high.
Above – A 45G1 40ft-long
high-cube container. It is 2.9
metres tall, and promoted
as the largest standard
height container available.
(11.6m) on some parts of the site
designated for landscaping and
stormwater.
Peebles was approached for
comment, but did not respond.
Residents said the majority
of containers on the site are
40ft-long 45G1 ‘high-cube’
containers, most common for
international shipping. Each is
2.9m tall.
Resident Melissa McCutchan
said eight stacks of those containers
– directly opposite her
house on Long St – were six high
until the stacks were lowered to
four last week.
Other container towers,
opposite Gould Cres, were still
being stacked six high (17.4m)
when The Star visited on Friday.
A city council environmental
health officer also visited the area
on Friday at 6.45am to monitor
noise levels.
McCutchan said operations on
the site usually start from 6am
but on Friday the site was quiet
until 7.20am, after the officer
left.
The city council said no-one is
forewarned when council officers
visit, but its officers do sometimes
use sign-written vehicles.
Residents claim work often
stops when those vehicles are
seen in the area.
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston
said using a combination of
(sign-written) pool vehicles and
unmarked vehicles will continue.
It depends on vehicle availability
at the time, she said.
Shopping centre tragedy: Parents
Judge says
no evidence
presence
of drugs
caused crash
• By Sam Sherwood
A MAN was clearing out
guttering near a car park at the
Bush Inn Centre when he was
fatally run over by a woman with
methamphetamine and cannabis
in her system.
Angela Fay Spyve was sentenced
to six months’ community
detention in the district court on
one charge of impaired driving
causing death by Judge Raoul
Neave.
According to the summary of
facts, the victim, Jeffrey Robert
Ilott, arrived at the Bush Inn
about 1.30pm on June 17, 2021.
Ilott, a 57-year-old maintenance
worker, had been asked
to carry out maintenance jobs
around the property at the request
of the mall manager.
Ilott parked his vehicle to the
rear of the centre on the eastern
side before speaking with the
MISSED: Jeffrey Ilott died after being struck by a car at the
Bush Inn Shopping Centre on June 17, 2021.
mall manager at the Bush Inn
Centre office.
At 2.25pm, Spyve arrived at
the mall and parked in the underground
car park to the southeastern
area of the mall. Both
Spyve and her friend entered the
mall to complete various purchases
from within the mall.
About 2.40pm, Ilott was
clearing out a drain in a service
laneway on the eastern side of the
Bush Inn Centre. He was wearing
a yellow hi-vis top while on his
hands and knees cleaning out the
guttering with the use of a hammer
and bucket.
He had no safety barriers or
traffic management set up to
alert drivers to his presence. At
‘To hear dad breaking
down crying in the
bathroom often when he
is on his own, not realising
we can hear him, is just the
saddest thing’
– Sandra Coffey
this time Spyve and her friend
returned to her car. They were in
a rush to collect their children
from school.
Spyve exited one of the eastern
exits of the underground car
park, turning right onto the
laneway to travel in a southerly
direction. At this point, Spyve
ran over Ilott, trapping him
under her car.
Spyve, who had not noticed his
presence in the laneway, could
not understand why her vehicle
was now stationary and seemingly
stuck. She tried to move the
car by accelerating and reversing
before getting out and seeing Ilott
under the car.
The pair got out of the car and
emergency services were contacted.
On arrival, they got Ilott
from under the vehicle. He was
showing no signs of life and was
pronounced dead at 3.06pm.
Spyve’s car was seized, and she
requested personal items from
her car prior to it being removed
to a secure location.
Police began removing items,
during which they found
evidence of offences under the
Misuse of Drugs Act.
She was then asked to undergo
a compulsory impairment test at
the Christchurch Central Police
Station.
She failed parts of the impairment
test and she had a blood
sample taken. The sample showed
methamphetamine and cannabis
in her system at the time of the
crash.
Spyve told police she had a
methamphetamine addiction
from a previous “toxic” relationship.
She also acknowledged
smoking methamphetamine the
morning of the accident.
She said at no point did she see
Ilott.
Ilott’s sister, Sandra Coffey,
read out a victim impact statement
to the court.
“Jeff is consistently in our
thoughts and prayers from the
moment we wake till we lay our
heads at night.”
His death had a “major impact”
on his parents, Sid and Ruth.
“No parent should have to bury
a child. Their grief has not left
their faces. They have lost their
spark in life and twinkle in their
eyes. It breaks our hearts to see
our parents suffer in this way at
this late stage in their lives.”
COURT 9
wish they had been ‘taken’ instead
Ilott’s mother could not say
his name without tears running
down her face, and his father had
lost his best friend.
“To hear dad breaking down
crying in the bathroom often
when he is on his own, not realising
we can hear him, is just the
saddest thing,” Coffey said.
“They wish it was them that
was taken that day, not Jeff, who
had so much of his life left to
live.”
Ilott was always there for his
siblings, who struggled to comprehend
he was dead.
His friends and fishing club
“family” described him as a
“gentle giant with a heart of
gold”.
Spyve’s lawyer, Kerry Cook,
said she wanted to publicly
apologise for the “needless death
of a beloved family member”.
He said what happened was
“unusual”, with a combination
of causative factors, a number of
which were out of her control.
She had no previous convictions,
and there had been a
number of serious and traumatic
events that had befallen her.
“That doesn’t justify or excuse
the offending, but it provides a
direct nexus or explanation for
the behaviour.”
He said it was a “very unique
set of circumstances”.
RESPONSE: Emergency services at the scene of the fatal
accident in June 2021.
PHOTOS: NZ HERALD
Judge Neave agreed and said
he had “never seen anything like
it”.
Cook said the stigma of a
conviction being entered carried
with it a “serious condemnation”
of Spyve’s actions.
“Her record will reflect that
she is responsible for a death
and that the death occurred
while she was using a Class A
controlled drug. No-one seeing
that will draw the causative
distinctions that the court will
draw in this case, they will simply
conclude that she was a drug
user that killed someone because
of her drug use. That is a very
heavy burden to bear and in my
submission the court should take
that into account in assessing all
the penalties.”
Crown prosecutor Courtney
Martyn said it was accepted
Spyve’s remorse was genuine,
and that she was someone who
had otherwise lived a “very prosocial
life”.
Judge Neave said what happened
was a “terrible, disastrous
outcome”.
He said there was no suggestion
or evidence that the presence
of the drugs were directly
causative of the crash.
He also said there was no suggestion
that Ilott had contributed
to his own death.
There were a number of
relevant factors noted in police’s
investigation into the crash,
including the drain being situated
in the centre of the laneway
and that the work area was not
cordoned off, with no warning
signs in place.
The side wall of the base of the
car park also obstructed Spyve’s
view when exiting onto the
laneway.
Spyve may have been distracted
by a dog running along
the edge of the laneway, and her
vision was obstructed by her
vehicle as she turned.
“Essentially there was a blindspot
that would’ve been present
while she was completing the
turn.”
Speed was not a factor, the
summary of facts stated.
“Suffice to say there are a number
of causes completely outside
the defendant’s control which
contributed to this accident, as
well as whatever factors that she
brought to bear exist,” Judge
Neave said.
“There is no evidence to suggest
that there was any act of
carelessness or negligence or
worse on her part which contributed
to the accident. Whilst she
had the prohibited substances in
her blood, there is absolutely no
suggestion that they in some way
impaired her judgment or had
some causative role to play.”
He said “at best” the case involved
“a moment’s inattention”
in relation to an obstacle that
anybody could have missed.
Spyve had no previous
convictions and was “highly
unlikely” to ever come back to
court.
She had started taking steps to
deal with her methamphetamine
use and was now in a much
more stable relationship and
environment.
She was convicted and
sentenced to six months
community detention with
12 months supervision. She
was also ordered to pay $3000
to Ilott’s parents and was
disqualified from driving for six
months.
POLICE HAVE spoken to the key suspect
in two high profile burglaries, but don’t
appear to have enough evidence to make
an arrest.
The Star can reveal police have identified
who they believe is the offender – but he is
denying any involvement.
The burglaries relate to one in Burnham
in early March where the elderly home
owner surprised the offender and scuffled
with him; and the other in Tai Tapu on
Boxing Day.
In that burglary, the home owner found
an axe had been left at the scene when
he returned to find his house had been
broken into.
The offender, tattooed and believed to
be in his 50s, fled the Burnham scene
in a distinctive white Mercedes Sprinter
camper van. The same vehicle was used
in the Tai Tapu burglary. It was caught on
CCTV leaving the scene. The homeowner’s
vehicle was also stolen, meaning there was
more than one offender at that burglary.
The van involved in the burglaries has
been sighted numerous times at a social
housing unit in Woolston.
Police continue to say little about the
investigations, other than: “Inquiries are
ongoing.”
But The Star can reveal the suspect is
well known to police and is associated
with a person connected to the white
Mercedes. The Burnham victim said last
month he was frustrated by the lack of police
progress. Since then, he has undergone
a formal process of trying to identify the
offender from mugshots. Earlier he had
been shown a mugshot of a suspect during
a chance meeting with a police officer at a
service station.
The victim told The Star he did not know
if an Up and Go drink he believes was left
by the offender when he surprised him in
his home had been forensically tested by
police.
The victim said he found the drink container
after police left his home following
the break-in.
It was not his so could only have been
left behind by the burglars when he surprised
him.
He said he put it in a plastic bag and put
it in the fridge until police picked it up.
He was hopeful a DNA test on the drink
container might connect it to the suspect if
the offender was on the police database.
But the victim said he was told cost
could be a factor in whether the container
was tested or not.
Police would not answer specific
questions from The Star about the Up and
Go drink and whether it had or would be
forensically-tested.
Ilam is poised to be
one of Christchurch’s
most hotly contested
seats in October’s
general election.
Tony Simons reports
WHILE INCUMBENT Labour
MP Sarah Pallett or National’s
Hamish Campbell are favoured
to win the seat, high-profile
candidates Mike Davidson and
Raf Manji could spoil their party.
Davidson is running for the
Green Party, campaigning on
social and environmental issues,
while Manji is leader of The
Opportunities Party, which was
founded in 2016 by economist
and businessman Gareth
Morgan.
Manj and Davidson are both
former city councillors and
chaired the finance committee.
Manj lives in Avonhead,
Campbell lives in Riccarton and
Pallett lives in Ilam, all of which
are in the electorate. Davidson
lives in Papanui but said he plans
to move into the electorate if
elected.
ACT is also likely to enter the
race but the party said it won’t
announce its candidate till July,
which may indicate a deliberate
strategy around contesting the
will face challenges
from Hamish
October general
seat since 1996. The electorate
covers Ilam, Avonhead,
Bryndwr, Fendalton, Merivale,
and Upper Riccarton.
Nearly a quarter of voters in
the Ilam electorate are employed
in professional, scientific and
technical service industries and
in education.
While Pallett upset the apple
cart in 2020, Campbell is hopeful
he can restore the status quo,
while Manji rates his chances
too. Brownlee believes the
electorate will be decided on
policies, not personalities.
“I think it will be a two-horse
race (between National and
Labour).”
Brownlee said the outcome
will depend on whether
Davidson and Manji can take
she also has considerably more
Before she won Ilam, Pallett
was a midwifery lecturer at
and previously worked as
a community midwife at
Christchurch Women’s Hospital
and as a rural midwife. She
co-founded the Canterbury
Party and served as chair of the
Labour Women’s Council.
Pallett highlighted her
achievement as an MP to secure
improved cellphone coverage for
the McLeans Island area.
“This was a really gnarly issue
that had been adversely affecting
not only the residents, but every
visitor and business in the area
for many years,” Pallett said.
Her weakness is a tendency to
overwork, she said. “I need to be
encouraged to take a little down
time occasionally.”
Boys’ High where he
was deputy head boy. He then
moved to Dunedin to complete
a PhD in molecular cell biology,
specialising in cancer and
viruses.
He said his biggest achievements
includes advancing
multiple sclerosis research and
advocacy.
His campaign is also raising
his personal profile in the
electorate. Campbell is relatively
new to politics, even though
he was blooded against Megan
Woods in the Wigram electorate
during the last election, which
he lost by 14,770 votes. Woods,
who has held the Wigram seat
since 2011, took out 62 per cent
of the vote.
Davidson is an advocate of the
city’s controversial cycleways
and was Papanui city councillor
for two terms until he was
ousted in last year’s local body
elections.
He is proud of the work he did
as a city councillor, supporting
sustainable transport programmes
such as public transport
and cycleway projects. But
he is working to change how he
is perceived by voters.
he said.
He said climate change issues
are front of mind for many
Ilam will likely be a battle between
Labour and National.
Manji, who won the Fendalton-Waimairi
city council seat
in 2013 and was re-elected in
the Waimairi Ward in 2016,
stepped down at the 2019 local
body elections.
Manji ran for Ilam as an
independent in the 2017 general
election. He received 8321
votes to finish second behind
Brownlee on 16,577 but ahead
of Labour candidate Anthony
to support the victims and
survivors of that attack. My
weakness is paying too much
attention to policy details.”
Who are the Ilam candidates
•Sarah Pallett – Labour: Pallett
lives in Ilam with her husband
Andy. She has two adult
children who attended Ilam
Christchurch in 2004 and was
Labour Wāhine Caucus, and a
member of the New Zealand
parliamentarians’ group on
•Hamish Campbell – National:
Campbell lives in Riccarton
and grew up in the electorate.
He attended Christchurch
Davidson, who lives in Papanui,
was a city councillor for six
years. He led the development
of the city’s transport plan and
championed the cycleway
network. Davidson was a
strong advocate for residential
intensification, biodiversity
and healthy waterways. He
has an environmental science
degree and previously worked
for EQC. Davidson believes in
mitigating and adapting to the
challenges of climate change.
He lives in Papanui.
•Raf Manji - TOP: Manji, who
lives in Avonhead, became
TOP leader early last year. He
served two terms as a city
councillor and was chair of the
finance and performance committee.
He helped set out the city’s
post-earthquake strategy
with central government. He
also acted as an independent
advisor to the Christchurch
Foundation and supported the
victims of the March 15 terror
attack. Manji spent 11 years
as an investment banker in
London during the 1990s and
has degrees in economics and
Book on iconic Edmonds brand
TAKE A TEASPOON of baking
powder, an art deco building
and legacy gardens, then add
an iconic Kiwi brand, a dash of
philanthropy – and you’ve got a
rich slice of social and culinary
history.
Sure to Rise: The Edmonds
Story is about the famous
baking powder family and the
factory and gardens gifted to
Christchurch by founder Thomas
Edmonds.
Authored by Peter Alsop,
Kate Parsonson and Richard
Wolfe, the book
uses more than
500 images
to document
the Edmonds
family story and
evolution of one
of New Zealand’s
Peter Alsop
most distinctive
brands and its
trademark – the Edmonds Sure
to Rise logo.
Wolfe first wrote about
Edmonds 36 years ago in
his 1987 book, Well Made
New Zealand: A Century
of Trademarks.
“The rising sun trademark is so
positive, such a glorious image.
While there were plenty of 19thcentury
products with similar
motifs, the Edmonds label was
one of the more attractive. And
has proved the most durable,”
Wolfe said. The slogan – Sure
to Rise – was also an important
factor in the product’s success.
“Around the late
1800s, home-bakers were
suffering failures because
there were so many
unreliable baking powders
on the market – it seems
most towns had their own
versions.
“The story goes that
a doubting customer
asked founder Thomas
Edmonds if his baking powder
would be any better and was
told: ‘Madam, it is sure to rise’.
Richard
Wolfe
“Edmonds quickly recognised
the line would play an important
role in promotion of the
product, and eventually
his product overtook all
others.”
Co-author Kate
Parsonson is the greatgreat-granddaughter
of
the Edmonds’ founder.
She met many third and
fourth cousins for the first
time while researching
Edmonds’ stories and
photographs and accessed
memories and memorabilia
passed down for generations.
HISTORY: The Edmonds factory and gardens in Woolston
in 1939. Above – Peter Alsop, Kate Parsonson and Richard
Wolfe’s book Sure to Rise: The Edmonds Story and the
famous Sure to Rise Cookery Book first published in 1908.
“The story starts with the
young newlyweds, Thomas
and Jane Edmonds, arriving
in Christchurch in 1879,”
Parsonson said. “They went on to
have four sons who all worked in
the factory and four daughters.
“There are so many
descendants, I grew up knowing
only that our branch descended
from the eldest son William who
was born in 1880.
“Family tradition suggests that,
as he stepped off the Waitangi at
Lyttelton in 1879, Thomas found
a coin in his pocket, tossed it
overboard and firmly stated that
he would ‘arrive with no money
and start from scratch with
everything now coming from my
own hands’.
“In 1880, he bought a modest
grocery store in Woolston
on what ultimately became
Edmonds St.
“Thomas went around with a
little cart that sold shop wares.
Housewives complained about
not having effective baking
powder because it came out on
the ship from England and, after
three months in a crate at sea,
it would arrive spoiled from the
damp.”
Parsonson also heard
tales from other Edmonds’
enthusiasts.
“Somewhere on a boardroom
shelf of the Edmonds building
in Woolston sat the ‘Tickler’
– a file box which housed the
Edmonds baking powder recipe.
“When the factory was being
bowled in 1990, quick-thinking
neighbours retrieved the box
from the wreckage skip.
“Unfortunately, the recipe was
gone, but they managed to save
a portrait of founder Thomas
Edmonds and a scale model of
the famous factory, along with
other bits and pieces.”
The neighbours subsequently
started the Friends of the
Edmonds Gardens.
Interested in history and
the culture around cooking,
Parsonson trialled the odd
recipe from the 1908 first
edition of the Edmonds Sure to
Rise Cookery Book.
“The Yorkshire scones looked
and tasted more like a flat, bland
savoury biscuit,” she said.
“It’s been fascinating to
document the evolution of a
cookbook that has become a
cherished and essential part of
this country’s culinary history
– the Edmonds has a place in
many people’s hearts as well as
their kitchens, often handed
down from generation to
generation.” Alsop particularly
enjoyed researching the
family, company, social and
advertising history, which he
said was full of intrigue, insight
and inspiration.
“More than 140 years since
Thomas and Jane arrived in
New Zealand, the full story
of an entrepreneurial family
and their diverse legacy is now
told. Being involved in this
team achievement has been
sure to inspire, intrigue
a great opportunity.” Alsop
co-designed Sure to Rise: The
Edmonds Story with The Gas
Project’s Gary Stewart.
“Designing a book on one
of New Zealand’s best-known
and longest-running brands
was both a responsibility and
privilege – with hope that the
result honours Edmonds’ own
impressive design legacy,” Alsop
said.
“For those like me who love
vintage commercial art, the
book offers a treasure trove
of advertising, along with
important history on innovative
marketing techniques.
“The Edmonds Cookery
Book – given away free from
1908 with beautiful early covers
– is surely one of the most
potent marketing initiatives in
New Zealand’s history.
“The famous Edmonds ‘E’ – a
famous logo itself and part of
Kiwiana – has also become
much better understood. It is
almost certainly a composite
arrangement of T-J-E, the
initials of Thomas John
Edmonds, and therefore a
wonderful enduring tribute to
the company’s founder,” Alsop
said
THE SELWYN District is
growing faster than predicted, a
new report has revealed.
The report was commissioned
by the Selwyn District Council
to assist it in future decisionmaking.
In 2022 Selwyn’s population
was 79,000 compared to 27,600 in
2000, a growth of 4.9 per cent per
annum. This makes it the second
highest growing district in New
Zealand, behind the Queenstown-
Lakes District.
Statistics New Zealand December
2022 population projections
indicate the district will cross
100,000 by 2029 and will reach
almost 150,000 by 2053.
The report estimates there will
need to be 12,547 new dwellings
in the next decade, at a rate of
1255 a year. It estimates there is
a need for 32,763 new dwellings
over the next 30 years, at a rate of
1092 a year.
While the short-to-medium
term needs are met, there is
estimated to be a shortage of 2753
houses in the long term.
Murphy readies for 400th milestone
• By Jaime Cunningham
FEW CAN say they have played
400 matches at the top level of
any club sport, let alone for the
same club.
But when Chris Murphy takes
the field for Ferrymead Bays in
the first round of the Chatham
Cup on Saturday, he will be
making his 400th appearance for
his club’s top team.
The 36-year-old is the first
to reach the milestone for any
Christchurch football club.
Murphy already holds the record
for the most premier team games
in the city, with Mike Harvey
(359) the next highest. Harvey
played for Rangers from 1991-
2006.
Murphy has represented Bays
since he moved to New Zealand
from Northern Ireland at age 13.
He also represented Canterbury
for several years.
“I just play for the love of the
game,” he said.
“There are actually a couple of
older guys in the team, but they
like to call me the oldest.”
Murphy has coached at
Ferrymead Bays for 16 years,
and also coaches the under-15
Ōtākaro team.
“Not many can say they’ve
played with guys they’ve coached
– it doesn’t happen that often,”
he said.
Murphy also played alongside
his father Neil in the 2006
Mainland Premier League title
winning team.
“Probably one of my highlights
was being able to play with Dad,”
Murphy said.
“Football was always a good
hobby and I just ended up
following dad into the sport.”
He captained the Bays side
that won the premier title again
in 2011, and was part of the team
Rising stars head to World Cup
• By Jaime Cunningham
THREE PLAYERS with strong
links to Christchurch have been
named in the FIFA under-20
World Cup squad.
Kian Donkers, who has played
for Cashmere Technical, former
Selwyn United defender Finn
Surman (left) and Adam Supyk
(former Nomads) have been
selected in the squad of 21 for the
tournament which starts on May
20 in Argentina.
Although all three currently
live outside Canterbury, they
each made their mark on the
city’s youth grades before
that made the quarter finals of
the Chatham Cup in 2010.
When Murphy takes the field
against Nomads on Saturday, it
will be the 20th appearance for
the midfielder at the national
knockout tournament – which
he has played in every year since
making the Bays’ top side.
Bays and Nomads last played
each other in the second round
of this year’s Southern League,
with Bays winning 2-1.
moving away as teenagers.
Donkers was part of the
Cashmere High first XI who
won the Connetics school
premier competition last season.
The forward moved to the
Netherlands at the start of the
year to play for NEC Nijmegen in
the country’s top football league,
the Eredivisie.
Defenders Surman, 19, and
Supyk, 19, left the city in 2019 to
play for the Wellington Phoenix
academy when they were 15.
Surman is currently contracted
to the Wellington Phoenix and
played 148 minutes in four
games this season.
Murphy hopes Saturday’s
game will be an opportunity
for his side to get back to their
winning ways, following last
weekend’s 3-0 loss to FC Twenty
11. Bays were also thrashed
by Christchurch United 6-0
in round five of the Southern
League.
“I guess getting back to
winning terms will be great
after some challenging losses
recently,” he said.
Supyk moved to Auckland
at the start of the year to play
for Eastern Suburbs and has
previously played for the Phoenix
Reserves.
The New Zealand under-20
team will be coached by Darren
Bazely, who previously played
for Watford, Wolverhampton
Wanderers and Walsall in the
United Kingdom.
Bazely said he was “really
pleased” with the squad.
“These are a great bunch of
lads, playing around the world,
and I know the whole squad
can’t wait to get to Argentina
to test ourselves against
MILESTONE: Ferrymead Bays stalwart
Chris Murphy (in white) will take the field
for his club’s top team for the 400th time
on Saturday. Above – Murphy in his Bays’
uniform as a 14-year-old.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to
enjoy a beer after the game.”
Although reaching 400
appearances seems like a lifetime
goal for many in sport, there is
no end in sight for Murphy.
“It’s just a game, and I guess
I’ll see how long I play for – as
long as I’m not stopping any
youth coming through,” he said.
• Ferrymead Bays take on
Nomads on Saturday, 2pm,
at Tulett Park.
Crosbie Park.
The Knights won their first
game against the Northern
Bulldogs 28-16 at the weekend
and are fifth on the premiership
table. After blowing a 16-4
halftime lead against the Hornby
Panthers, the Hornets take on
the Knights. The Panthers scored
an unanswered 20-points in the
opening stages of the second half
against the Hornets to get a 28-
20 win. The Bulldogs are looking
to stop the Keas’ unbeaten streak
this weekend, but will need a
far better performance than last
week when they trailed 22-0
against the Knights after 40
minutes. A tight match is on the
cards for the Panthers when they
take on the Eagles who pushed
the Linwood Keas last weekend
but were unable to come away
with the win, losing 28-16.
At halftime, the Eastern Eagles
and Keas were locked at 10-10.
But a dominant second half saw
the defending champions score
three tries to the Eagles’ one.
HOCKEY (ALL GAMES
SATURDAY)
Carlton Redcliffs lead both the
men’s and women’s competitions
after three rounds of the
Canterbury Premier League.
The men’s side are already two
points clear at the top of the table
after a 2-0 win over Hornby.
Southern dominated
University to get their first win of
the season 6-2, which included a
Jonathon Smalberger hat-trick.
University play Hornby as
they search for a win after three
losses.
HSOB/Burnside face a
challenge to beat Carlton
Redcliffs in the fourth round, but
will be looking to continue their
momentum after a 4-2 win over
Harewood. Meanwhile, second
place will be up for grabs when
Marist and Harewood play each
other.
In the women’s competition,
the top of the ladder looks
similar to the men’s table, with
Carlton Redcliffs on nine points
followed by Marist on seven.
Carlton Redcliffs take on
HSOB/Burnside who are still
chasing their first win after
their opening round loss and
a 2-2 draw with Harewood
last weekend. Marist look to
return to winning ways against
Harewood after their 1-1 draw
last week.
Harewood have an
opportunity to jump up to
second if they can beat Marist.
Southern play Avon after a bye
last weekend. Both teams are
looking to record their first win.
Keeping safe
There’s a lot to consider when putting
providing live
entertainment to the
people of Christchurch.
Premiere rock bands, an
impressive selection of
of course their famous $1
But let's talk about the
amazing food Micky's has
on offer.
Earlier this year Chef
Noi took over Micky's
Kitchen, adding an
exciting dimension to the
hearty Irish pub grub on
offer. e menu now
features an extensive
selection of Irish, Kiwi
and ai dishes - and
Chef Noi's authentic ai
dishes are impressive.
Massaman Lamb Shank,
Green Curry, Beef Cheek
Curry, Spicy ai Sauce
Salmon Fillet, Pad ai,
are just a few choices from
the menu.
Stew, Shepherd's Pie, Steak Eggs & Chips, a Chicken
With a name like Smiths City, ordinary is right there in our name. But it’s never been
in our nature. At the first sign of ordinary, we try to do the opposite.
There’s no such thing as an ordinary bed, or an ordinary oven or fridge – and that’s
why we don’t sell ordinary products. If you’re after a Saturday morning trampoline, a
Tuesday-night-tradition-maker, or a local community art gallery, we’re your people.
For ordinary old Smiths, we’re anything but.
Mates Rates have got your back... pocket.
Here at Smiths City we’d like you to meet our Mates... Rates.
They’re like prices, only friendlier. They’ve always got your back,
any day of the week. That’s what good mates rates are for.
