SWEARING OUT loud is a no-no when it comes to morning television – but the unpredictability of live TV means it can happen to the best of us. Breakfast host Matty McLean accidentally dropped the f-bomb during the show’s live broadcast yesterday in front of his co-hosts, after he appeared to drop his mic after an ad break. “Oh f***, my thing’s fallen out,” he said without realising he could be heard by viewers. Jenny-May Clarkson quickly reminded him, “You’re on air, you’re on air, you’re on air!” McLean was quick to apologise to viewers for the slip-up, saying, “Welcome back to Breakfast, I’m so sorry, I just lost my communications,” before presenting the next story on the programme, about anti-monarchist protesters at the King’s coronation. But fans of the show – and of McLean – found the slip-up entertaining and applauded his speedy recovery. “Dropped the ball but great recovery Maddy (sic),” one viewer commented on Twitter. “Loved Jenny-May screaming in the background, ‘you’re on air, you’re on air’.” A spokesperson for TVNZ said in a live TV environment, “mistakes can happen” and the Breakfast team had a busy morning reporting on the wild weather hitting New Zealand. “Matty did not realise the programme had returned from an ad break and this one slipped out when he dropped his comms device. When Jenny May alerted her co-presenters to the show being back on air, Matty apologised to our viewers,” they said. “We’re sorry if anyone was upset by this mishap. The wet weather and wild winds have seen leaves falling more often, and earlier, this year – and it seems people are not happy to see the leaf litter lying around. The city council says contractors tasked with cleaning up the leaves from footpaths, gutters and sumps have been abused. Said city council streets maintenance manager Steve Guy: “We cannot stress enough that contractors are pulling out all the stops to make sure these are swept away as quickly as possible. “Our contractors are working to clear the leaves as quickly as they can and while we certainly appreciate residents’ frustrations, it is equally frustrating for staff to clean streets, gutters and sumps only for a southerly change to blow through and 24 hours later Oops! Thursday May 11 2023 The Star NEWS 3 Blackmoore murder trial ends abruptly • By Kurt Bayer THE TRIAL of two people accused of murdering Angela Blackmoore in her Wainoni home in 1995 has been aborted. Former debt collector David Hawken, 50, and ex-stripper Rebecca Wright-Meldrum, 51, had denied murdering Blackmoore on August 17, 1995, and were standing trial in the High Court at Christchurch. The jury trial, scheduled to take four weeks, began last week. They heard from 18 witnesses before it was halted. Yesterday afternoon, Justice Cameron Mander told the jury the trial had been aborted and they were free to go. “I made the decision, after having heard from the counsel, to abort this trial. I can’t go into the details with you as to why this has arisen, except to broadly indicate that material has come to hand which counsel needs the opportunity to review.” “It’s unavoidable that this step has to be made,” he said. It’s understood that a new trial could potentially begin in November. For 25 years the case went unsolved before police suddenly received fresh information in 2019 and Jeremy Crinis James Powell was arrested. He pleaded guilty and was jailed for at least 10 years for bludgeoning and stabbing Blackmoore 39 times. During the trial, the Crown alleged Hawken ordered Powell – who was due to be a key Crown witness in the case – to carry out the hit, offering to pay $10,000, while Wright-Meldrum, a close friend and ex-lover of Blackmoore, helped him gain entry to her house. It was alleged that Hawken wanted Blackmoore out of the way so he could profit from a property deal.
