Hundreds of
pet turtles
saved from
shell of a life
• By Geoff Sloan
A WOMAN who takes in
abandoned turtles is warning
would-be reptile owners about
buying them online.
Donna Moot has rescued
hundreds of sick, injured or
abandoned turtles over the past 15
years – many of which were once
people’s pets.
She says anyone planning to
buy a turtle needs be wary of
“misinformation” on how easy
they are to look after and animal
welfare issues such as sending
turtles by post across the country.
“People find them and sometimes
they’re surrendered and they
come here until I can get them
rehabilitated and re-homed.”
Moot runs her Turtle Rescue
and Rehoming operation out of
her Somerfield house, which is
currently home to about 75 turtles.
“All the food, all the equipment
I pay for myself. I’m very fortunate
here that the Canterbury SPCA,
they will support me with the
stray turtles, so they’ll help with
vet bills for that.”
Over winter, Moot may spend
up to a $1000 a month on electricity
to run and heat the many water
tank habitats in her home. Some
turtles aren’t strong enough to hibernate
outside through the winter
and have to be brought indoors.
But Moot believes turtles make
great pets – for the right person.
“I get a lot of turtles that have
been bought on Trade Me.
Unfortunately, many of them
have significant shell injuries,
deformities and are quite unwell
because (the owners) have been
given misinformation about how
to actually care for them.”
People often don’t realise turtles
have a lifespan of more than 50
years – so it’s definitely a longterm
commitment, she said.
“I have an adoption fee of a
minimum donation of $20, which
isn’t very much, but I expect that
the person can show me that
they’ve got the correct set up, so
they may have to fork out quite a
bit of money for that.”
Ten-year-old composer’s
music wows audience
IT IS said Beethoven wrote
his first complete piece of music
at the age of 12 – but Pax Read
did not want to wait that
long.
The 10-year-old Medbury
School pupil had his solo piano
piece Silver premiered by
Professor Mark Menzies from
Canterbury University School
of Music during the Magic
Carpet Music Trust’s inaugural
anniversary celebration, held in
Wānaka on Saturday.
The trust was formed by
patron Lyn Milne and awardwinning
performer-composer
Rakuto Kurano in May last year,
to promote music throughout
rural communities in the South
Island, while providing young
performers and composers with
more opportunities.
Pax’s musical pursuits include
piano, flute and participation in
the school choir. He has been
studying composition with
Kurano since the beginning of
2022 through the school’s music
programme. In addition to
instrumental lessons, the school
also offers weekly one-on-one
composition lessons, which
made it possible for Pax to study
with Kurano.
Pax spent the last few months
composing Silver with guidance
from Kurano.
“There is something so special
about hearing your composition
performed live by a professional
musician for the first time,” said
Kurano.
“I wanted to ensure Pax
experienced this at an early
age.”
The premiere of the piece
garnered an overwhelmingly
positive response, receiving
hearty applause from the
audience of about 60 people.
Many were stunned by the
maturity of the piece for
someone of Pax’s age.
“Pax composed a remarkably
assured composition for piano
that was a pleasure to present to
the public,” said Menzies.
Said Medbury School director
of music April Holland: “We
are so proud of what Pax has
achieved with his composition
and we are thrilled that he has
tutelage of Rakuto Kurano.
“Pax’s enthusiasm and passion
for music is evident in the way
he involves himself fully in
many musical opportunities
and how he is always so willing
to learn new skills. We cannot
wait to see what the future has
in store for this talented young
musician.”
Pax Read will certainly be a
name to look out for.
The big bird with dreams to match
• By
Heidi Slade
HUNDREDS of
years ago, moas
used to walk across
the land near where
Carly Waddleton
lives. Now she has
written a children’s
book about a moa, to
encourage her two sons
and others to follow their
dreams.
Inspired by her sons Louis
and Arthur’s moa obsession,
Waddleton will launch her first
book next Saturday.
Dreams of a Moa tells the
story of a moa that has a go at
achieving its dreams, all around
the world.
“I wanted the book to be about
encouraging everyone to give
your dreams a try, even if you
have challenges – like the moa, a
bird without wings,” she said.
“Not only for my sons, but for
everyone else.”
Waddleton and her sons often
visited the Canterbury Museum,
where they became “obsessed”
with the moa, she said.
“They were so curious about
it.”
Inspiration for the story was
also taken from Waddleton’s own
experience of being born with a
heart condition.
“A lot of people are living with
health issues,” she said.
“In the illustrations, you will
see that the main character
actually has a prosthetic leg.
I hope this subtle inclusion
illustrates that anyone and
everyone
can go after
what they dream of.”
The book launch
will be held on
Saturday, May
27, at the Redcliffs
Library from 10.30am-
1pm, with support from the
Canterbury Museum, which will
be bringing in moa bones, a moa
egg and other artefacts.
Having the launch at Redcliffs
Library was important for both
Waddleton and her family.
“We love living in this area,”
Waddleton said.
“The sense of community is
amazing, and so it is important
for me to hold the book launch
here.”
Originally from Lincoln,
England, Waddleton moved to
New Zealand in 2009. She has
lived in Moncks Bay since 2011,
where she met Megan Salole,
the illustrator of the book,
who happened to live
just down the street.
It took Waddelton
and Salole about
two years to finish
Dreams of a Moa.
“I think I’ve
always known
I was a writer,
but I’ve just
never given
it the time,”
Waddleton said.
She began with
poetry; her first poem
was published when
she was 8-years-old.
But since
having kids and
reading to them,
Waddleton said
she realised
how magical
children’s
books can be.
• Dreams of a Moa is
THINKING BIG: Carly Waddleton‘s children’s book about a
2300kg of rubbish
THE MOTHER of all clean ups
saw more than 1000 volunteers
collect over 2300kg of litter
from waterways.
The annual litter collection
event on Saturday took place
along the Avon River and
Estuary.
Members from 55 community
groups filled 438 large plastic
bags with rubbish.
Among the bags were 180
large items, such as tyres,
pellets, plastic Christmas trees
and an old barbecue, Avon
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
manager Tanya Jenkins said.
“We saved 2370kg of litter
entering our waterways during
the event.”
But Jenkins said she was
disappointed the amount of litter
collected had
not decreased
from last year. A
goal of the clean
up is to see the
amount collected
each year get
Tanya
Jenkins
smaller, which
means there is
less rubbish going
into waterways.
Jenkins said a majority of the
TIDY: A
team of Ara
students
collected
bags of
rubbish they
collected at
Charlesworth
Reserve.
collected in clean up
litter was plastic, which could
easily have been put in a yellow
recycling bin.
“We still have work to do to
educate the litter bugs among
us that this is unacceptable,”
Jenkins said.
“Each item collected poses
danger to our fish and birdlife
and adds to our already polluted
waterways.”
The group also collected 292
piles of dog poo left behind by
the owners, she said.
“(It has) become one of the
reasons why our waterway water
quality is ever-declining.”
Students overcome hurdles on
road to kī-o-rahi competition
• By Darryl Baser
A GROUP of Te Aratai College
students overcame some big
hurdles to compete at the
national schools’ kī-o-rahi
tournament.
Kī-o-rahi is a traditional
Māori ball game, described as a
cross between netball, handball
and touch rugby.
Two staff members and 17
students from Te Aratai travelled
to Rotorua for the tournament,
but first had to overcome the cost
of getting there.
Assistant health, physical and
outdoor education teacher Jesse
Harding said each student had
to raise $1000 through their
sponsors.
“The Kutt (a fitness club), here
in Linwood, paid for our flights.
We wouldn’t have been able to go
without that help,” he said.
Construction company Apollo
Projects and the college also
helped pay for the trip – but
there were still a few more obstacles
along the way.
“Things started to get a bit
scary when at 4am, I received a
text from our airline saying our
flight (8.25am departure) was
cancelled.”
The airline told the group
they “could get some of us there
tomorrow”.
Principal Richard Edmundson
came to the rescue, helping to
get the group to Auckland in
time for a connecting flight to
Rotorua.
Kī-o-rahi is played between
two teams of eight (four male,
four female) on a large circular
field, with the teams swapping
PLAYERS: LJ
Beattie, who
was named
most valuable
player, and Leah
McCallum-
Simon were
part of the Te
Aratai College
team at the
national schools’
kī-o-rahi
tournament.
between defending the central
pou (pole) and trying to score
points by hitting it with the ball.
All players wear tags which opponents
try to rip off.
Team members LJ Beattie, 16,
and Leah McCallum-Simon, 15,
said the experience furthered
their knowledge of Te Ao Māori
(the Māori world). Beattie, 16,
won the most valuable player
tane (male). “I used to play rugby
league and touch, which has improved
my passing catching and
foot work skills. But, at the moment,
I have been playing basketball,
which helps in stressful
situations when you can be stuck
and not sure where to go (on the
field),” the year 12 student said.
Year 11 student McCallum-
Simon said: “It was good to be
able to see the different things in
Rotorua and being able to make
my connection with everyone
else in the team. “I play netball
and I think that helps with vision
as I know where other people
are on the field. You do passes
like in netball. Playing volleyball
(also helps) because you do a lot
of jumping and in kī-o-rahi you
jump to throw at the tupu (goal
zone) and do lots of explosive
movements.”
Harding was pleased with
how the students represented
the school. The school finished
25th out of 38 teams at the
tournament. In September,
Canterbury is set to host
the South Island kī-o-rahi
competition during Māori
language week. Te Aratai College
is also set to play a hosting role
at next year’s national schools’
competition.
Students
receive
Duke of
Edinburgh
awards
SIXTY-FIVE young people
from throughout Canterbury
have received The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Hillary Award at
a ceremony at the city council’s
civic offices.
On May 8, the bronze, silver
and gold awards were presented
by Mayor Phil Mauger.
The students worked
with Chris Allan from the
Joshua Foundation to achieve the
awards. They clocked up more
than 2000 hours of voluntary
service within their community,
developed a new skill and become
physically active, engaging
in both team sports and individual
pursuits.
Mauger said: “The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Hillary Award
ceremonies are always significant
occasions, as we proudly celebrate
Ōtautahi rangatahi who
have embraced the challenge of
the award, risen to every occasion,
and achieved success along
each step of the journey.”
This year marks 60 years of the
award in New Zealand, during
which time over 275,000 young
people have participated.
Budget delivers for defence personnel
MP Dan
Rosewarne
served 23
years in
the New
Zealand
Defence
Force before
entering Parliament
last year from the
Labour list, serving on
several operational
tours, including two to
Afghanistan. He knows
better than most what
the Government’s
recent injection of cash
into defence will mean
for stretched personnel
EARLIER THIS week, Minister
of Defence Andrew Little
announced that Budget 2023
delivers the biggest pay increase
in over a decade for our defence
personnel.
The pay of many NZDF personnel,
including new recruits
and skilled lower ranked service
people, will increase between
$4000 and $15,000 from July
1. This pay boost of over $419
million brings the total amount
invested in defence to $4.7 billion
since 2017, or double what
the previous government spent.
High turnover rates, as well as
calls to respond to recent events,
both domestically and internationally,
have left our forces
stretched.
Since the start of Russia’s
illegal war of aggression on
Ukraine, NZDF personnel have
contributed by training more
than 1000 Ukrainian troops in
the United Kingdom, as well as
providing intelligence analysts,
logistics support and aircraft and
personnel to transport military
aid.
When Cyclone Gabrielle and
floods devastated the North
Island in February, causing
between $9 billion and $14.5
billion in estimated damages,
our defence force were there
ready to muck in and support
our communities. Between the
search and rescue operations,
welfare checks, transportation
across rivers via both trucks and
human chains, supply deliveries
and general clean-up work in
the thick mud and silt, there was
little time for rest.
As climate-related emergencies
become more frequent, there is
no doubt that defence force personnel
will continue to be called
to support both their military
and civilian communities.
Having served for 23 years in
the NZDF myself, which included
responses to the Christchurch
and Kaikōura quakes, local
SERVICE:
Labour list
MP Dan
Rosewarne
served in the
New Zealand
Defence
Force for 23
years.
flooding events, two deployments
to Afghanistan and one to
the Solomon Islands, I have seen
first-hand the sacrifices made by
those on the ground when they
are called to support in times of
emergency. Our NZDF personnel
miss out on precious time
spent with their families and important
life events to ensure the
peace and stability of our region
and further afield. They are the
unsung heroes of Aotearoa.
Sadly, I have also seen firsthand
the sacrifices made by
military personnel include their
remuneration, which in the past
has been well below market rate.
I watched numerous colleagues
walk away for better money
elsewhere due to historic underfunding
of the defence payroll. I
am proud of this Government’s
record on upgrading New
Zealand’s military capability
and ensuring wages for NZDF
personnel are competitive. This
increase means 90 per cent of
NZDF personnel will now be
paid at, or close to, market rates.
This is an acknowledgement
of the blank cheque the men
and women of our defence force
write out for the government of
the day to cash in, for up to and
including their lives, at any moment
of their service.
As the Minister of Defence
stated in his press release, “We
have a moral obligation to ensure
our soldiers, sailors and aviators
are fairly paid for the critical and
often dangerous work they do,
and the Government takes that
responsibility seriously on behalf
of all New Zealanders.”
Budget 2023 is not just a
pay rise for NZDF personnel,
it also goes towards restoring
the meaning and worth of
military service, something I am
extremely proud of.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
ground moisture barrier needs.
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
Moving with the times reaps success
SKODA AS a global brand is
very much on a roll. There are
many new models, the brand
is marketed buoyantly in New
Zealand, and at dealer level
there is a lot of passion for the
product.
This evaluation focuses on the
Karoq, a mid-size sport utility
vehicle that has just undergone a
major facelift for 2023.
The Karoq is popular here and,
as a consequence, it is available
with plenty of choice. There are
three price-friendly variants –
Ambition at $45,990, Style at
$51,990 and Sportline at
$63,990.
The evaluation car was the
mid-spec Style, whereas the
Sportline adds a 2-litre engine
and four-wheel-drive; the two
entry-level models are front
wheel-drive only and have a
1.4-litre turbocharged fourcylinder
petrol engine.
The latter is much the
European standard with strong
mid-range torque (250Nm from
1500rpm to 3500rpm), and a
low point of peak power (110kW
at 5000rpm). Together, these
figures combine to produce
strong acceleration. Skoda claims
a 9.2sec standstill to 100km/h
acceleration time.
Figures aside, it is in the dayto-day
commute that you really
appreciate the quality of this
engine, it gets about its business
with urgency, yet is unflustered
and quiet. It responds with
vibrancy and is instant in its
delivery, a lot of that is to do with
the quick shifting eight-speed
automatic and clever matching
between the engine and
transmission ratios.
The Karoq is an adept
highway cruiser, it is whisper
quiet at speed, and provides all
occupants with a comfortable,
well cushioned ride.
While the Karoq can be seen
as a purposeful all-rounder, one
of its greatest claims to fame
is that of its fuel consumption,
or should I say, lack of
consumption. That’s the beauty
of European engines, those
that come out of the Volkswagen
group’s factories are high
on efficiency and low on
emissions.
The end result is a 7.2-litre
per 100km combined cycle
average fuel usage claim.
The consumption readout
reinforced that during my time
in the test car. It was constantly
showing around 7.8l/100km
with an instantaneous figure of
4.8l/100km at the legal limit, the
engine turning over leisurely at
just 1700rpm.
What I also like about the
Karoq is its practicality. It is a
compact car at just 4.4m, but it
has good space inside and useful
load space.
Bear in mind as well, there are
many little features that make
Skoda stand out as a car maker,
they don’t stand out at first, but
once familiar with the car you’ll
appreciate them.
For all of its clever kit and
efficient technology, the Karoq
doesn’t qualify for a New
Zealand Government clean car
discount.
But the good news is that it
won’t cost you a penalty, both
engines and all models are
fee neutral. I’m also reliably
informed that there is a healthy
supply of all Skoda models.
RAY WHITE PAPANUI
Why Sell Now? Daniel Coulson | Chief Executive, Ray White New Zealand
Enclosed are Property Market Insights
from our latest Issue of Ray White Now,
for the full edition of Ray White Now
please contact us at Ray White Papanui
and we will be happy to share a copy
with you. We are also available to provide
local Christchurch market insights that
will help you to make informed decisions.
Fear of the unknown has gripped
the global property sector – a
phenomenon that’s finally giving
way to more encouraging market
sentiment as inflation pressures ease
and an element of enthusiasm returns
for buyers and sellers sitting on the
bench.
Several recent data releases have
been a source of tentative hope,
supported by some big policy
announcements that will shape the
lending environment and drive buyer
demand in the coming months.
We are cautious of overstating
the positive impact of lower-thanexpected
headline inflation metrics,
which recently bucked market
trends. However, a closer look at the
data shows homegrown pressures
as pronounced as ever, with a tight
labour market necessitating wage
growth and the cost of goods and
services exacerbated by capacity
constraints and the summer’s
disruptive weather events.
Despite this, Kiwis are embracing the
changing market environment, with
indications the end may be in sight for
mortgage lending rate rises. Mortgage
market responses to the Reserve Bank
of New Zealand’s (RBNZ) surprising
50 basis point rise to the Official
Cash Rate (OCR) in April have been
somewhat muted, with the country’s
biggest banks choosing to tweak fixed
short-term rates by considerably less.
At the same time, lenders are
trimming longer-term rates, which
continues to feed expectations that
we are at or near the top of the
mortgage rate hiking cycle.
We’re also seeing a market-wide
recognition that the current stage of
the residential real estate calendar
offers the last chance to sell before
winter weather truly sets in, which
will be followed by disruption to the
market during October’s general
election.
As we plan for the months ahead, Ray
White’s residential sales experts are
looking beyond seasonal expectations
and delving into regional sales data
to identify the trends and market
movements that will help you to make
the best and most informed decisions
regarding the sale or purchase of your
next home.
Opportunities are increasing in
abundance, and we encourage those
considering their options to seek
qualified advice from their local Ray
White professional so that we may
help you to realise your housing
aspirations.
Sell with Confidence with Auction - Why Wait?
way to sell your home in any market,
and to back this we have made listing
your home for auction in 2023 so easy
you can’t say no!
