Let it Weather
Some people have expressed
disappointment at the new
appearance of the Sissinghurst
bicycle, which has been hot-dipped
galvanised – immersed in hot zinc – to
prevent further rust corrosion. This is
an age-old process that will provide
a robust coating and protection from
corrosion for 50 years or more.
Although it might not look its
best at the moment, once it has
‘weathered’ – probably for about 18
months – it should start to slowly
improve. Having lived for many years
in South Africa, where there are many
galvanised tin roofs, I know that,
once they have weathered, they can
drastically change in appearance.
Indeed, I have a steel frame in my
garden at the moment, which was
also galvanised – most likely by the
same company – about 18 months ago
and I can assure you that it is a very
different hue to that of the originally
galvanisation.
I cannot give you all the answers
but I know that leaving it to weather
will improve its appearance. After
that, if it still looks bad it could be
treated with a specific primer and
then painted if necessary.

Astonished
As you probably realised, I was completely
astonished to receive the KALC Community Award
on Wednesday. I found myself involved with the
Sissinghurst Flower Show Society soon after we
moved into Mill Lane in 1963 and have been on the
committee for more years than I care to remember.
There have been many pleasures and challenges
over the years, all of which I enjoy, as well as my
interest in the past history of the society. As a
long standing village event, it is rewarding for the
committee that the three annual shows still play a
major part in the village calendar of events.
I would like to express my thanks to everyone
involved and hope that the KALC community award
scheme will continue to bring unexpected pleasure
to many in years to come.
