the global speaker series<br />
<strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>’s groundbreaking Global Speaker Series brought five diverse and thoughtprovoking<br />
speakers to campus in the 2008-2009 school year. Each presentation served to<br />
inform, challenge and inspire us to think globally and appreciate the position of others.<br />
Brooke Gladstone, host and managing editor of NPR’s On the Media, explored “War<br />
Through a Soda Straw,” highlighting the challenges faced by journalists reporting on war<br />
and conflicts around the world.<br />
Rabbi David Forman, peace advocate and national columnist, discussed the Arab-Israeli<br />
conflict to help us understand its historical, political and religious context.<br />
Peter Fisher, managing director of BlackRock Fixed Income Portfolio and former under<br />
secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Domestic Finance, presented a fresh perspective on the<br />
global economic crisis.<br />
Arn Chorn Pond, founder of Cambodian Living Arts and internationally recognized human<br />
rights leader, recounted how he escaped death during the Cambodian “Killing Fields”<br />
genocide and how that experience shaped his life’s work as the leader of many Cambodian<br />
renewal projects and a supporter of young people in war-stricken regions.<br />
Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize-winning author (Enrique’s Journey) and journalist for the Los<br />
Angeles Times, recounted the epic and harrowing journey of a young Honduran boy who,<br />
clinging to the sides and tops of freight trains, traversed two continents in search of his<br />
mother who came to the United States to work. Thousands of immigrants make this<br />
dangerous journey to America each year to reunite with loved ones.<br />

Class of 2009 as he epitomizes NA’s<br />
core belief in the common pursuit<br />
of respect, scholarship, integrity and<br />
service to the greater community.
