16 In action Able labels Industrial PCs and operating terminals are essential in the identification of goods A logistical chain should never break, otherwise the flow of goods and wares grinds to a halt. It is important that every item can be uniquely identified at every point in the process so that it reaches its destination reliably. To this end each item is given a special code. In the drinks industry, each pallet or crate is given its own label so that it can continue safely on its way to the right supermarket or catering outlet. Markem GmbH, based in Krefeld, specialises in the manufacture of fully automatic labelling systems. The company belongs to the multinational Markem Corporation which is based in Keen, New Hampshire. It supplies systems for identifying and labelling products, and has developed a special machine called the Cimpak 300 Kompakt to meet the requirements of the drinks industry. This machine uses Lenze Digitec industrial PC technology, and is operated using an industrial PC in conjunction with a terminal. The machine can be operated as a stand-alone system or as part of a network. The operating terminal shows the machine operator which production jobs are still outstanding. The PC in the control cabinet informs the higher-level server about every pallet and every completed production order; this server then passes the information on to a merchandise information system. The Cimpak 300 Kompakt attaches labels to as many as three adjacent sides of the pallet without the pallet having to be rotated. The system maintains a high printing quality and remains highly reliable even under the toughest conditions of use. It can attach plain text, bar codes, diagrams and real-time information to the product. Approximately 120 pallets can be labelled every hour. Generally speaking the system is linked to a merchandise information system. Take a brewery, for example: this arrangement allows the identification labels for each batch to be automatically produced from a higherlevel production planning system. Markem uses a different PC for every labelling machine, so that each one can operate autonomously if required. This mode of operation may come into play if production orders are no longer available from the supervisory server – during a network failure, for example. In the Cimpak, the type CPC 2000 industrial PC is mounted in a protective control cabinet. The Markem system makes use of an Intel Low Power processor. This processor consumes less electricity and exhibits low heat loss, meaning that no fan is required. Machinery used in the drinks industry has to be extremely resilient and insensitive to moisture. The drinks may splash and spray around, and there are also very strict hygiene requirements, which means that water and cleaning agents are used daily. Electrical equipment must therefore be well protected if it is to survive. The Cimpak complies with protection category IP54 in its lower parts, while the operating terminal and its aluminium casing fulfils protection category IP65. The terminal is a display unit from the Lenze Command Station product series. A DVI/USB extender links the unit to the PC in the control cabinet in real time. This extender enables machines to be set up with the appropriate protection in difficult industrial environments, and also allows them to be operated easily and their processes to be High levels of protection are required in the brewing and drinks industry.
visualised. A twin-LAN cable suffices for this link, enabling USB and image information to be transmitted in high quality. Markem uses this type of cable to control the Cimpak and to visualise the operating status on the operating terminal, which is mounted up to 30 metres away from the machine. The Cimpak includes a scanner for the monitoring of bar codes. If labels cannot be read properly, they are produced again and affixed by means of a pneumatic unit. Because of the modular design of its system platform, Lenze is able to put together IPC and operating solutions exactly as customers require, in a complete package. CPU performance can be adapted to requirements, for instance, as can the size of displays and memory; and various Windows operating systems can be used. This technology is supplied in the form of a control cabinet PC and monitor panel, or as a free-standing operating unit with an integrated industrial PC – depending on the design of the machinery. A wide range of port modules and numerous input devices makes it easy to adapt the system to its place of use and to the operating concept. The software screens can even be adapted to the customer’s own corporate design. www.markem.de In action The integration of Lenze Digitec Controls GmbH (formally Digitec) into the Lenze Group has enabled the Hameln-based drive specialist to supply PC-based automation systems. This enables users to make their automation concepts either drive-based or PC-based. Whichever they choose, Lenze can supply all of the components. Lenze’s range of industrial PCs is based on a platform strategy which uses tried-and-tested hardware and software standards. The modular design makes it easier to plan the automation systems and integrate them into existing technology. The Embedded Line units are designed for direct installation into command panels, machines and systems. They are available as stand-alone industrial PCs, monitor panels and thin clients in protection class IP65 (frontal). The Command Station series includes operating stations with a high protection category (IP65) which are protected against dust and spray. The attractive aluminium casings have numerous ports.
