Cottonwood & Verde Valley 3
Welcome
Located in the ‘heart’ of Arizona, the Verde Valley is ideally
situated above the heat of the desert and below the cold of
Arizona’s high country. Surrounded by jagged mountains to
the south and west and by mesas and buttes to the north and
east, its lower elevation makes it a perfect destination for your
next Arizona adventure.
Explore the rich history and native culture with a visit to one of
many historic sites and national monuments. Soak up the sun
and nature at one of Arizona’s best state parks in the center
of Cottonwood, Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Hit the trails
throughout the Verde Valley on foot, bike, or horseback, and
keep your eyes peeled for birds, wildlife, and the perfect shot
to share with friends and family back home.
SMALL
Towns
Cottonwood
Clarkdale
Jerome
The small towns of the Verde Valley showcase the best of Arizona’s
quaint communities. All are within a 30-mile radius with an estimated
population of 66,000 - each offering visitors a unique experience.
In the shadows of Mingus Mountain and in the heart of the Verde
Valley, Cottonwood offers a distinctive historic district lined with
shops, art galleries, restaurants, and tasting rooms on its Main Street.
History is alive in nearby Clarkdale, whose homes and buildings still
reflect its early copper smelting heritage. Four specialized museums
focus on Native American cultures, international copper art, the local
railroad, and town history.
Cornville/Page Springs offers wineries, tasting rooms, and a few
wonderful dining options. This area provides a relaxed take on some
of Arizona’s most pristine high-desert scenery.
When you visit the heart of Arizona wine country, you’re sure to find many
reasons to stay, play, and return again and again.
Discover the many dining options from smoked BBQ, freshmade
pasta, and hearty home-cooked meals to rich desserts
and locally made chocolate, and the perfectly paired wine or
brew to wash it down with. Rest easy and dream of more days
in Cottonwood and the Verde Valley at one of many hotels, bed
& breakfasts, campgrounds, RV sites, and more.
The Verde Valley is a destination for visitors of all ages. Familyfriendly
activities inside and out, shop for antiques, jewelry, and
unique souvenirs, sip wine and gaze at the views, explore the
outdoors morning, noon, and night, or plan your visit around
one of many signature annual events.
Cornville
Sedona
Camp Verde, located in the geographic center of Arizona, is
rich in history and offers a variety of recreation and outdoor
activities to experience and enjoy.
A Verde Valley excursion wouldn’t be complete without a
journey up the hill to Jerome, the “City in the Sky.” Once a
thriving mining camp of 15,000, Jerome acquired “ghost town”
status by the 1960s. Today, entrepreneurs have restored many
of the quaint buildings that cling to the mountainside and the
town now dishes out artsy boutiques and panoramic views in
equal measure.
Speaking of views, Sedona’s stark, giant, red rock formations
are so compelling, they cause grown men to take up painting or
poetry. Toss in dozens of superb shops, galleries, restaurants, and
recreational opportunities, and Sedona has found a magical elixir.
WELLNESS
well-being. Nestled in the heart
ideal destination for individuals
improve their physical, mental,
and emotional health.
From modern holistic therapies
to traditional Native American
healing practices and herbal
River
The Verde River supports a significant
regional wildlife population and is
one of the few rivers in Arizona that
flows year-round. Along the 36-mile-long
Verde River Greenway, visitors can explore
a lush habitat that is exclusive to the Verde
Valley. The 3,300-foot elevation guarantees
comfortable temperatures for activities such as
hiking, canoeing, bird watching, picnicking, fishing,
or even wading in the cool water.
u The Verde River is the last river in Arizona still flowing all year
long for its entire length.
u The Verde River’s riparian zone (Verde River Greenway)
supports about 2/3 of all lifeforms in Arizona.
u The Verde River is 192 miles long, and it is boatable with canoes
and kayaks for more than 130 of those miles year-round.
u The trees and plants along the Verde River form the “Frémont
cottonwood and Goodding willow forest type”, among the most
threatened forest types in the U.S. Less than 325,000 acres
remain anywhere in the world.
u The Verde River supports about 240 species of birds and is one
of the most diverse and productive birding spots in the United
States. Birds like the Bald Eagle, Common Black Hawk,
Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Bell’s Vireo, Song Sparrow, Great Blue
Heron, Belted Kingfisher, and many more are “riparian obligates”,
meaning they only live along a river or other waterway.
u The Verde River supplies fresh drinking water to more than
2 million people in Maricopa County, and it is the least expensive
water supply in that county.
u Thousands of acres of farmland are irrigated by the Verde
River’s water, both in the Verde Valley and downstream.
Horse Ranch State Park to Red Rock State Park. The trail follows a
portion of the historic Lime Kiln Wagon Road and, is named after
a lime kiln used in the late 1800s to heat limestone to separate and
recover the lime – which was used in mortar for construction. The
Lime Kiln Trail provides hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers
with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including red
rock formations and the Verde River. The trailhead is located off
Dead Horse Ranch Road. The trail starts out relatively gentle and
becomes more technical as you move out of Dead Horse Ranch
State Park and into the desert country where mountain bikers can
pick up the pace as the trail provides a clear line of sight through
the slightly rocky and sparsely vegetated landscape.
ANCIENT
Ruins
Ancient Ruins can be found throughout Arizona, but
some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings are in the
Verde Valley. The ancient Sinagua culture thrived in the
Verde Valley from approximately A.D. 600 to A.D. 1400.
The Sinagua’s legacy includes petroglyphs (pecked or
scratched images) and pictographs (painted images).
The V Bar V Heritage Site is the largest known petroglyph site in
the Verde Valley and, one of the best preserved. The Southern
Sinagua rock art legacy comprised of 1,032 individual petroglyphs
on 13 panels at this site is known as the Beaver Creek Style. The
Montezuma Castle National Monument and
Montezuma Well
This ancient cliff dwelling dates back to 1150. The Castle
stands in a cliff recess 100 feet above the valley, just 4 miles
north of Camp Verde. The Castle is one of the most wellpreserved
cliff dwellings in North America. Montezuma Well,
a detached unit of the same Monument, located about 11 miles
north, is a natural limestone sinkhole through which 1,500,000
gallons of water emerge each day from an underground
spring. Both places have a short, ⅓ - ½-mile trail to see the
archaeological remains, as well as a picnic area. Both are
served by the Visitor’s Center at the Castle. Fee area. Open
daily at 8am. Located at 2800 Montezuma Castle Road off
Interstate 17 at exit 289, Camp Verde. 928.567.3322
Approximately 800 years ago, this Sinagua pueblo was home to
the Native American population once inhabiting this area. The site
is comprised of 42 acres including hiking trails (one wheelchair
accessible) and a complete museum. Visitors can walk through the
various rooms of the pueblo ruin to view this ancient civilization.
Images etched in stone help tell the tale of daily life. Open daily at
the communities of
Cottonwood, Sedona,
Camp Verde, Jerome,
Cornville, Clarkdale, and the
beautiful red rock landscape
says is the most beautiful place
in America.
The Verde Valley Wine Trail invites wine
enthusiasts to experience a destination rich in
history, beauty, and the production of exquisite
wines. Each of the wineries and tasting rooms offer
a variety of skillfully crafted wines to satisfy any wine
taster’s palate. Many also offer a variety of activities and
events throughout the year. Visit vvwinetrail.com or their
VERDE VALLEY AVA
The Verde Valley American Viticultural
Area (AVA) is located in Yavapai County,
approximately 100 miles north of
the Phoenix metropolitan area. The
northern boundary separates the
AVA from the Coconino National
Forest, primarily following the
3,800-foot elevation contour
because the terrain becomes
too steep for cultivation
above that elevation.
WINE TRAIL
Green Wine
The Arizona Wine Growers Association strives to
advance with integrity the sustainable growth and
production of authentic Arizona-grown wines.
Page Springs Cellars
Page Springs Cellars
Page Springs Cellars
Page Springs Cellars is tucked into the volcanic landscape of the Page
Springs area, along the beautiful banks of the Oak Creek. Protecting
this beauty goes hand-in-hand with winery operations at PSC. Owner
Eric Glomski’s eco-responsible approach embraces environmental
stewardship of the vineyards and winery, providing the cornerstone
of winemaking. A certified-sustainable winery (via Sustainability
Alliance), PSC continues to work towards protecting our planet.
Decreasing its carbon footprint seems of equal importance as creating
fine wines at Page Springs Cellars. The eco-winery employs solar
voltaic panels which can be found covering the winery roof and
shading the parking area, making the winery 100% solar powered.
PSC’s onsite wastewater treatment system converts all grey and black
water into high quality effluent that is reintroduced to the water
table through adjacent mesquite bosques. In congruence with water
reclamation, PSC also actively participates in a ‘water offset program’
that allows PSC to boast their ‘net-zero water usage’ status.
Sustainability is the culture at PSC. From no-till farming to an
extensive recycling program, composting to paperless hand dryers,
Page Springs Cellars is going the distance. Even the body butters
and food supplements at the PSC Shop are created through the
repurposing of pressed grape skins and seeds.
A connection to the wine that one drinks only seems to increase
the enjoyment. Page Springs Cellars’ connection to the land that it
farms and its surrounding environment offers peace of mind and
a connection that is hard to avoid when immersed in the beautiful
winery...It doesn’t hurt that the wine is world class.
arts with unique shops, sophisticated galleries, wineries,
tasting rooms, bistros, hotels and B&Bs - with just under
