12 Reasons to Visit Tempe

Find out why visitors love our city

Welcoming approximately 4 million visitors every year, Tempe offers stunning weather year-round, award-winning eateries,

family-friendly activities and Sonoran Desert adventure — all of which make for the perfect trip of both urban sophistication and

timeless serenity of the Sonoran Desert landscape.

If you’re planning an Arizona getaway, here are 12 reasons why Tempe should be at the top of your list.

Tempe Beach Park

1. The Sonoran Desert

Anyone looking to immerse

themselves in the great outdoors

will be greeted with plenty of

options in and around Tempe. Here,

you can book a boat rental on

Tempe Town Lake, hike to the top

of “A” Mountain or cruise through

Kiwanis Park by bike all in a single

day. Don’t miss the breathtaking

views at the Desert Botanical

Garden or aerial panoramas from

the basket of a hot air balloon.

2. Year-Round Events

There’s an event for every itinerary in

Tempe, from browsing the works of

hundreds of juried artists at Tempe

Festival of the Arts to cheering on NHL

teams at ASU’s Mullett Arena, home

of the Arizona Coyotes. In addition to

these signature happenings, the city

also offers such ongoing activities as

cultural festivals, live music and DJs,

performing arts, seasonal festivities

and an array of street fairs and popup

markets featuring food vendors,

entertainment, games and outdoor

activities.

3. Arts & Culture

Arts and culture enthusiasts can

take in a Broadway show at ASU

Gammage, enjoy an intimate

performance at the Tempe Center

for the Arts or explore forwardthinking

art exhibits at the ASU

Art Museum. Plus, you’re sure to

discover at least a few of the city’s

many public art installations and

murals along the way.

4. The Culinary Landscape

Whether you’re in the mood for a

great meal or a new cocktail designed

by a creative mixologist, Tempe is

bursting with eclectic places for

dining and sipping — with even

more on the horizon. The ambiance

ranges from lush, vibey patios to

sky-high rooftops, and some of the

best food and drink offerings in the

Southwest. With authentic cuisine

from around the globe and awardwinning

breweries and distilleries,

Tempe extends the invitation to try

something new on your next visit.

6 #OurTempe

Mill Avenue

5. Noteworthy Nightlife

A quintessential nightlife hotspot,

Tempe comes alive with endless

options for entertainment once

the sun sets. From breweries and

distilleries to dance floors and

live music, this city offers a scene

for every style. New concepts are

continually joining timeless classics,

making evening itineraries just as

exciting as daylight adventures.

8. Cactus League Spring

Training

From February to March, Arizona

is one of only two states where

spring training invites baseball fans

to experience preseason play set

against beautiful weather. Cactus

League hosts 15 MLB teams at 10

stadiums across Greater Phoenix —

including Tempe Diablo Stadium,

home of the Los Angeles Angels.

9. Crew-Approved

Tempe is a kid-centric city with

enticing indoor and outdoor

attractions for the entire family.

From getting up close and personal

with underwater creatures at SEA

LIFE Aquarium and exploring

endless building combinations at

LEGOLAND ® Discovery Center to

making a splash at Kiwanis Park,

where you can cool off at The

Cloud splash pad or float the day

away at the Kiwanis Wave Pool,

entertainment for all ages awaits.

10. Retail Therapy

Shoppers delight in Tempe’s retail

destinations. For deals, Arizona

Mills is a sprawling campus that’s

home to 175 outlet and value stores

and entertainment options. Tempe

Marketplace, an outdoor shopping

oasis, pairs such retail favorites as

Lululemon and Nike with dining

concepts, art installations and

attractions. Other popular locales

include home décor giant IKEA (the

only location in Arizona) and locally

owned boutique shops along Mill

Avenue.

11. Our Sunny Disposition

It’s no secret that Arizona —

especially Tempe and its neighboring

cities — is known for its fabulous

weather. With more than 330 days

of sunshine annually, any time is the

perfect time to immerse yourself

in our indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

While fall and spring are the most

popular seasons to visit, summer is

value season and winter travelers

opt for sunny blue skies and mild

temperatures during the holidays.

12. You Belong Here

Tempe prides itself on being a diverse

and welcoming city that actively

fosters a community of inclusivity by

celebrating individuals of all abilities,

races, cultures, religious affiliations,

sexual orientations, gender identities

and military/veteran statuses. It’s

also one of Arizona’s leading cities

when it comes to inclusive policies

and ensuring all individuals receive

equal treatment. Tempe’s progressive

leaders, empathetic citizens and

reputation as a forward-thinking

university town all combine to

make Tempe a diversity, equity and

inclusion leader in the Southwest.

FEATURE

6. Arizona State University

Arizona State University, ranked

No. 1 in innovation, is one of the

largest universities in the country.

Architecture across its main campus,

in Tempe, ranges from modern,

artistic techniques to historic

gems that date back to the 1800s,

including Old Main (1894). The

palm tree-lined walkways offer a

glimpse of Arizona’s vibrant history

and future trajectory through its

buildings and public art pieces.

7. Golden Hour

The Valley of the Sun is known for its

incredible sunsets filled with vibrant

and unforgettable orange, yellow,

pink and purple hues that perfectly

complement the city skyline and

mountain views. In Tempe, you’re

guaranteed a perfect vantage point

from Tempe Town Lake, “A” Mountain

and a number of local hotel rooftops.

In Tempe, the culinary landscape is as diverse as those who call

the city home. Whether you seek flavor, ambiance, convenience,

sophistication or an international experience, you’ll find it here.

Dining experiences here offer a cross section of multigenerational

staples and immersive, new establishments. For adding the

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH

Worth the Wake

Breakfast and brunch are an important — yet often overlooked — part

of any itinerary while visiting a new place. If you prefer to start your day

off immersed in the scene, dining at a local gem and sipping espresso or

cocktails (or both), you’re going to love mornings in Tempe. Home to

many restaurants that specialize in breakfast and/or brunch Monday

through Sunday, we say the most important meal of the day is a way of

life in our city.

Crêpe Bar

What started as an irresistible food truck concept has blossomed into a

charming space to start your day — thanks to the loyal and enthusiastic fan

base that owner Jeff Kraus cultivated as a mobile chef. Drawing inspiration

from trips to France with his mother and their experience with Parisian

street food, he specializes in sweet and savory crêpes, which include some

options with a Southwestern twist. If crêpe breakfast tacos are on the must

try list, look no further. crepe-bar.com

Chic Chef 77 Bistro & Wine Bar

Last year, chef Nik Fields opened Arizona’s first Black-owned wine bar in

Tempe. While her 200-bottle list and delicious dinner menu always bring a

vibe to evening diners, it’s the brunch experience we’re here to celebrate.

Add chic flavor to your weekend plans by trying the mimosa popsicle flight

and a Belgian waffle — you can’t go wrong with either peaches and cream

or caramel and Nutella. Of course, you can indulge in the live music, DJs,

charcuterie, deviled eggs, bruschetta and desserts no matter what time of

day or day of the week you visit. Reservations required.

Daily Dose

Located next to Tempe Marketplace, Daily Dose is a convenient stop for

a fantastic selection of breakfast favorites. Spice things up with a chorizo

omelet, chili verde huevos rancheros or the turkey sausage & polenta bowl.

Of course, you’ll find a wide variety of classics and lighter offerings here too.

Daily Jam

For a convenient, fast-casual morning meal, especially after a hike up “A”

Mountain or a paddle on Tempe Town Lake, Daily Jam is a must. Located

on Mill Avenue, this unassuming spot packs quite a vibe. From murals

inside and inventive cocktails and espresso creations to hearty entrees and

a glorious patio for people watching, it’s no wonder it’s a staple for both

locals and visitors. It’s no coincidence that the red velvet waffles were voted

Best Waffles in AZ by Food Network.

Foch Café & Bistro

A locally owned restaurant with European-inspired dishes and drinks, Foch

is home to many tributes to France. From its name (a street in Paris) to the

authentic recipes showcased across the menus. From the essentials, French

toast and crêpes, to the most exquisite, duck confit omelet and beignets,

you can’t go wrong. Just add an espresso or bloody mary, a sunny seat on

the patio and you’re set for a great day. Bon appétit. fochcafe.com

Morning Squeeze

Start your day with a visit to this bright and cheery restaurant on Mill Avenue,

and treat yourself to pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs, smoothies, cocktails,

espresso and even dog-friendly menu items. So, if you’re planning to bring your

fur baby to Tempe, plan to pull up a seat on the patio and treat them too. We

recommend the chowhound scramble for them and the mimosa flight for you.

Postino Wine Cafe

With locations in the heart of the ASU campus and South Tempe, Postino

Wine Café is well-known as a “board & bottle” hotspot during lunch and

dinner. But ask anyone on the weekend, and it’s all about brunch here. Table

bites (hot donut dots, cast iron sticky bread), mains (focaccia stack, smoked

salmon carpaccio) and brunch cocktails (Killer Queen, Sherry Mary) round

out this dining experience — and you still have your entire day left to explore.

Sip, Sip, Hooray

Whether you prefer to start your morning with a simple cold brew, carve

out some time in the afternoon for a spot of tea or find yourself in search of

the trendiest seasonal sips, you can be sure Tempe is serving it up — hot or

iced — at a variety of unique shops and cafes across this city. Don’t forget to

select a pastry or a savory treat, too.

COFFEE & TEA SHOPS

Brick Road Coffee

At first glance, Brick Road Coffee offers several nods to The Wizard of Oz

(There’s no place like foam). Take a closer look, and you’ll notice that’s not

the only fabulous thing about this café. In addition to its roster of coffee and

non-coffee beverages, this LGBTQ+ owned coffee spot offers a wide variety

of programming. Bonus: Most days, you’ll find Golden Girls playing in the

background. brickroadtempe.com

Cafetal Coffee

With roots reaching back several generations — to the Ramirez family’s farm

in Colombia, in fact — Cafetal Coffee infuses each cup of fair-trade coffee

with notes of tradition, passion and a sense of community. The menu reflects

these roots, with such standouts as the Maya heritage chai, a selection of

arepas and whole bean coffee to take with you. cafetal.coffee

Cartel Roasting Co.

Established in Tempe in 2008, Cartel Roasting Co. has been blending,

roasting and brewing some of the world’s most intriguing coffees ever since.

As this operation has grown (11 Arizona locations now) so have their offerings,

which include teas and pastries as well as canned cold brew, whole-bean

offerings, a variety of coffee accessories and apparel to enjoy long after your

morning cup of joe. cartelroasting.co

INTERNATIONAL CUISINE

Celebrate Global Flavor

Khải Hoàn Restaurant

In a city as diverse as Tempe, global cuisine is an absolute must. Tempt your

taste buds with flavors from around the world, including Ethiopia, the Middle

East, Asia and other stops in between. From family-style experiences to latenight

eats, these menus are authentic and rich in both flavor and tradition.

Here are just a few favorites to satisfy your international tastebuds.

Bang Bang – Tempe

Overlooking Mill Avenue, Tempe’s newest upscale hotspot engages all the

senses with sushi, sake, music, ambiance and pure vibrant energy. More than

a culinary destination, Bang Bang is a nightlife experience. The Asian-fusion

menu offers a robust lineup of sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi — complemented

by noodles, bao buns, dumplings, fried rice selections and loads of sharables.

The space transforms as the night rolls along, with an inviting dance floor

that’s home to Arizona’s largest disco ball as well as well-known musicians

and DJs. Just be sure to make reservations in advance. bangbang-tempe.com

Café Lalibela

Open since 1996, Cafe Lalibela was the first Ethiopian restaurant in Arizona

and is still beloved by locals and visitors today. This authentic Ethiopian dining

experience features shared dishes with injera — a fermented, gluten-free

bread made from teff — in place of utensils. From the collection of woven

baskets adorning the walls to the aromatics of the restaurant’s own Ethiopian

blend of coffee brewing, your senses will thank you for treating them

here. cafelalibela.com

Cornish Pasty Co.

With two locations in Tempe, this purveyor of traditional British pasties is a

long-time favorite. The original location (University Drive) is dark and cozy,

with church pew-style benches and an inviting bar that peers into the mostly

open kitchen. The Mill Avenue location is compact and lively, as it’s situated

right on the thoroughfare. Traced back to Cornwall (Southwest England)

as early as the 1300s, pasties are pastries filled with vegetables and meat

combinations. With more than 30 varieties of this international comfort food

— ranging from Chicken Tikka Masala to Guinness Stew — everyone will eat

like royalty. cornishpastyco.com

Curry Corner

At first glance, this may look like an unassuming Pakistani restaurant.

But the authentic family recipes served here have garnered quite a bit of

attention, including “some of the best chicken” Guy Fieri has ever had on

“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Specifically, it’s the Tandoori chicken tikka,

topped with garam masala, that he prepared alongside owner Farah Khalid

in episode 7 of season 17. Since airing, the concept has grown to include

Chai Corner for all your coffee and tea needs as well.

The Dhaba

This award-winning Indian restaurant specializes in culinary customs of

the Punjab region of northern India. Fresh, locally procured produce and

premium ingredients are used to craft cuisine steeped in culture and

tradition, from bread freshly baked in the tandoor oven to deep-fried

Indian street foods. Dining here is more than an opportunity to savor a

delicious meal — it’s an immersive experience, thanks to the owners’

dedication to sharing rich culture and extraordinary cuisine.

the-dhaba.com

Khải Hoàn Restaurant

When it comes to traditional Vietnamese cuisine, Khải Hoàn has earned

its rightful place among the Valley’s best (if not the best). This unassuming

mainstay was one of the first establishments to serve up steaming bowls

of pho locally. Here, the authentic rice noodle soup is available with

chicken, seafood and eight varieties of beef. Beyond the bowl, you’ll find

such favorites as bún (rice vermicelli), cóm tấm (rice plates) and even a

few classic Chinese dishes. No meal is complete without freshly cracked

coconut juice or a Vietnamese coffee, a pour over starring sweetened

condensed milk. khaihoanaz.com

Matsuri Izakaya

As part of the Jin Hospitality Group, this concept is one part Japanese

street food restaurant and one part tapas bar. Izakaya means stay-drinkplace,

and this spot is true to its name as you’ll find it buzzing with ramen,

udon, katsu, sushi, sweet fruit sandwiches, beer and cocktails seven days

a week. The experience goes beyond the menu to the decor, which is

reminiscent of alleyways and signage that’s typical of Japan, adding an

exclamation point to the authenticity that awaits you here.

instagram.com/matsurimillave

Phoenicia Cafe

Since 1996, the Belgaied family has been serving up mouth-watering

Mediterranean cuisine in Tempe. Unmistakable, thanks to the distinct

facade, this restaurant is known for its gyros and kabobs and its

wide variety of appetizers, including hummos, baba ghannouj, falafel

and dolmades. Halal and vegan diners are welcome here, so this

establishment’s mantra of, “our restaurant should make you feel at home,”

rings true. If you need some items for the road, be sure to check out

Salam’s Market & Deli right next door. phoeniciacafe.com

Tasty Thai

Living up to its name since 2011, Tasty Thai offers a wide variety of iconic

Thai dishes, including authentic appetizers, fried rice, noodles, curries and

more. What sets this spot apart from the others is the late-night kitchen —

popular among ASU students, business travelers and everyone in between.

If you’re arriving in Tempe after most places have wrapped up dinner

service, add this restaurant to your must-try list. tastythaiaz.com

Zu & Pocha

Zu & Pocha

In Korean, Pojangmacha (pocha for short) means “covered wagon” and

refers to a makeshift pub or street vendor that offers booze and food,

especially in the late evenings. Similarly, this modern twist on the classic

Korean concept offers an upscale-meets-chill atmosphere that dares you to

try something new: Pollack Pasta made with squid ink, lobster rolls served

on charcoal + brioche buns or a selection from seasonally rotating the raw

bar. For a true pocha experience, pair your selections with sake, soju or a

MEXICAN RESTAURANTS

Savor Southwest Favorites

When it comes to the signature flavors that define dining across the

Southwest, nothing beats an authentic Mexican culinary experience. In

Tempe, concepts range from new and trendy to multigenerational classics and

family-run concepts that have defined this culinary landscape for decades.

Our list of Tempe’s top authentic Mexican restaurants — and which dishes we

can’t get enough of — will help you navigate which restaurants land on your

must-try list.

Barrio Queen

Pairing vibrant artwork and occasional entertainment with your favorite

Mexican dish at Barrio Queen engages all the senses. Fresh, quality

ingredients from local farmers and traditional recipes from barrios

throughout Mexico pay homage to both history and culture. Don’t pass up

the award-winning tableside guacamole demonstration. There’s also no

better place to sip on a mezcal craft cocktail. barrioqueen.com

Casa Reynoso

Since 1938, the Reynoso family has been preparing and sharing old-style

Mexican food with locals and visitors to Arizona. The goal of their family

recipes — which include chimichangas, rellenos, tamales, tostadas and more

— is to remind you of a traditional, homemade meal your nana might have

prepared. The “Gollo Burro,” which combines green chili, pinto beans, onions,

cheese and a buttery flour tortilla, has been voted no. 1. So delicious, in fact,

the recipe hasn’t changed in over 90 years. casareynoso.com

Cocina Chiwas

This upscale and authentic dining experience delivers world-class

Chihuahuan cuisine. Helmed by husband-and-wife duo Armando Hernandez

and Nadia Holguin, this concept is the most recent addition to their growing

family of restaurants across the Valley of the Sun. Favorites range from

tacos and wood-fired quesadillas to steaks and a variety of seafood offerings

— best enjoyed with a Paloma or piña colada in hand. Be sure to make a

reservation because this culinary duo has quite a following of enthusiastic

foodies. cocinachiwasaz.com

Ghost Ranch

Modern Southwestern fare, inspired by the multicultural history of Arizona,

New Mexico, Texas and northern Mexico, takes on a new meaning at Ghost

Ranch. For starters, the green chile burger is a fusion masterpiece, and the

Aztec Cake is best described as a perfect marriage between enchiladas and

a casserole. The lineup also includes various seafood, vegetarian, vegan,

gluten-free and brunch offerings. Don’t forget to peruse the delicious

cocktails and local beers, too. ghostranchaz.com

Los Reyes de la Torta

Straight from Mexico City, the tortas, tacos, burritos and chilaquiles here are

authentic and over the top. So much so, that the Torta Del Rey, complete

with five types of meat, landed on an episode of the Travel Channel’s “Man

v. Food.” You’ll find many less daunting, but equally delicious options —

including the Mexicana Torta, filled with grilled steak — in regular and mini

sizes. losreyesaz.com

Cocina Chiwas

Rosita’s Fine Mexican Food

This family owned and operated restaurant first opened its doors in

Tempe in 1963. Now, second and third generations are continuing the

legacy of Mama Rosa by serving some of the best Mexican food in the

region. Among the standouts on this extensive menu is “Rosita’s Special,”

a large flour tortilla filled with melted cheese and your choice of green

chile with beef, seasoned chicken, red chile with beef or shredded beef.

Timeless

Must-Trys

TEMPE CLASSICS

When it comes to culinary institutions — from restaurants that have defined

the dining landscape for years to quintessential destination experiences —

Tempe has no shortage. They say the best places to eat are the ones the

locals frequent, and we agree.

Caffe Boa

A Downtown Tempe favorite for nearly 30 years, Caffe Boa offers an upscale

Italian dining experience in a historic setting (this building was the home

of one of Tempe’s first hotels). Handmade pasta and fresh seafood dishes

round out the biodynamic, organic and artisanal menu — curated to pair

with a selection from Arizona’s only all-natural wine list. cafeboa.com

Casey Moore’s Oyster House

in a Downtown Tempe neighborhood. This house, which is rumored to be

haunted, and sprawling patio have been converted into a must-try dining

and drinking destination. Known for oysters, this gem also offers many other

worthy selections, including crab cakes and fish & chips. The bar’s aesthetic

is that of an authentic Irish pub — complete with a vast selection of beer,

whiskey and spirits. caseymoores.com

Gertrude’s

Located inside the Desert Botanical Garden, Gertrude’s specializes in pairing

seasonally inspired dishes with the year-round beauty of the Sonoran

Desert. As such, this indoor/outdoor restaurant combines American

boar shank. Clever botanic creations comprise the cocktail program, and

this theme continues throughout the dessert menu with fruit tamales and

ricotta donut holes with prickly pear dipping sauce.

crust, pasta and sandwiches equally delicious. Just save room for the chocolate

chip dessert pizza. loumalnatis.com

The Peppermill Steakhouse & Cocktails

This newcomer to South Tempe is not your average steakhouse. It’s a modern

concept that draws inspiration from French and Asian influences. Think chile

rellenos stuffed with duck confit and Cote de Boeuf with Thai peanut sauce.

The inventive menu — which rotates seasonally and includes the classics you’d

expect — wood-burning stove, generous appetizers and premium cocktails

combine for a deliciously elevated, but unpretentious neighborhood dining

experience. peppermillaz.com

burgers for its hungry and loyal patrons. To find out why this old school

dining experience has been a rite of passage for generations of ASU students,

just choose your style of burger, or opt for a hot dog, chicken sandwich or veggie

burger; add fries or one of the other tasty sides; then head over to the buffet

CRAFT BREWERIES

Tempe Taps

From one of the state’s first breweries to award-winning spots tucked into almost

every neighborhood, you could say craft beer is “in-grained” in Tempe’s culture.

Checking out local breweries is as much a historic jaunt as it is an ale trail.

Fate Brewing Co.

A Valley of the Sun favorite for many years, Fate’s newest location brings

an industrial-chic space with plenty of sunshine and seating across the first

and second floors — as well as an outdoor beer garden — to central Tempe.

Widely known for the Candy Bar Milk Stout (a Great American Beer Festival

award winner), you’ll find rotating favorites ranging from the Local Lager to

the Fateful IPA, as well as sours and spirits. From snacks to mains, the menu

here is loaded with pairing inspiration. Brat burger + Fatetoberfest. Chicken

tinga tacos + Hatch Chile Gatos (golden ale). Spa Day IPA + Hawaiian salmon.

You’re welcome. fatebrewing.com

Four Peaks Brewing Company

In 1996, the founders of Four Peaks Brewing Co. opened its doors in a historic

building almost as old as the city itself. Today, it’s one of Arizona’s largest

businesses and is known nationally for award-winning brews, including Kilt

Lifter Scottish-style ale and Kölsch-style Sun Bru. While beer is the main draw

to this neighborhood hangout, the fare comes in at a close second. Beer bread

sandwiches, perfectly seasoned fries, enchiladas and pizzas are just some of

the menu highlights — and reason enough to return more than once. Should

you need further convincing, the brewery offers tours every Saturday to share a

behind-the-scenes look at the beer-making process (with samples to sip along the

way). Cheers to that. Small fees and reservations are required. fourpeaks.com

Freely Taproom & Kitchen

As if Freely’s 30 rotating beers on tap, 20 wines by the glass and superb craft

cocktail menu weren’t enough reasons to visit this local gem, there’s also

the buzzing kitchen. Whether your itinerary calls for lunch, dinner or a boozy

weekend brunch, this is the place to nosh on mouth-watering flatbreads,

salads, sandwiches and more — while sipping on your favorite local brews

from Pedal Haus, Goldwater and more. Don’t forget to check the bodega-style

cooler for selections available to-go. freelytaproom.com

Goldwater Brewing Co. at The Crossings

Since 2015, Goldwater Brewing Co. has been brewing and pouring pints

in the Valley of the Sun. Today, the McClelland family’s operation pumps

out kegs for over 100 bars and restaurants as well as their three tap rooms

— the newest of which is located in south Tempe. This year, south Tempe

will welcome the company’s third taproom. Standout brews include Hop

Chowda (New England-style hazy IPA) that features peach, mango and

citrus, and Desert Rose (Kölsch) brewed with 100% organic prickly pear.

Sonoran Desert Oasis

3 Musts for Recreation in Tempe

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS

Papago Park

Few destinations offer the urban sophistication of a buzzing

downtown and also thrilling outdoor recreation across serene

landscapes that feel a world away from everything. Tempe

invites you to experience the best of both of these worlds in the

same day — every day, if you so choose.

No matter the season, savvy locals and visitors plan their days

in our Sonoran Desert city around the area’s natural attractions

and, of course, golden hour — the most majestic time of day. No

matter what time of day you’re exploring the outdoors in and

around Tempe, here are three of the best places to experience

the unique juxtaposition of our vibrant natural city and its

landscapes.

TempeTourism.com 27

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS

Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake

The unmistakable Tempe Town Lake is the epicenter of outdoor activities in

the Valley of the Sun, offering a variety of scenic recreation options as well as

an atmosphere to relax and people-watch.

Since 1999, this man-made oasis has added a new dimension to the Sonoran

Desert experience, inviting adventurers to change their point of view by

renting kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats or electric boats.

This waterway also provides a stunning backdrop for views along the

shoreline and is home to more than 5 miles of paths around the lake for

skating, running, bicycling and walking.

Located on the lake’s south shore, Tempe Beach Park has been a gathering

place for families and community for more than a century. Today, the park —

which encompasses 25 acres of paths and trails, picnic areas, ramadas, art

and scenery — plays host to many cultural celebrations, music festivals and

signature events that fill the calendar each year.

Spanning more than two miles in length, Tempe Town Lake is crossed by six

different bridges. Most notably, the Historic Mill Avenue Bridge (built in 1931)

and the New Mill Avenue Bridge (added in 1993) lead to and from the heart of

downtown. To the west, you can’t miss the Elmore Pedestrian Bridge, situated

in the foreground of the Phoenix skyline. This stunning suspension bridge is a

photo-op hotspot, especially at sunset.

“A” Mountain

If Tempe had a welcome sign, “A” Mountain — officially known as Hayden

Butte Preserve — would be it. Since 1938, this landmark has worn a gold “A” for

Arizona State University. Long before this tradition began, the region’s prehistoric

inhabitants (the ancient Hohokam civilization) left their mark here in the form of

approximately 500 petroglyphs that date back between A.D. 750 and 1450.

Today, the mountain’s convenient location in Downtown Tempe invites hikers

of all ages to make a quick detour off of Mill Avenue and experience an aerial

view of the city and surrounding landscape and local landmarks.

Choose one of the mountains two trailheads: The Leonard Monti Trail begins

behind the Tempe Transportation Center, and the Hayden Butte Trailhead

is located behind Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. The two converge on a wide,

paved path that goes on to include a series of wooden steps and the peak is in

its natural, craggy state. This short hike is high-intensity with steep elevation

gain. However, there are various points to stop, rest as needed and take

photos along the way. Like most trails in the area, this is a preserve, so look

for the trailhead signs and stay on the marked paths.

"A" Mountain

28 #OurTempe

Papago Park

Just 2 miles beyond the skyline of Downtown Tempe, and in the foreground of

the Valley of the Sun’s famous Camelback Mountain, a collection of sandstone

rock formations rise from the desert floor. These unmistakable buttes are known

as Papago Park, an urban oasis located in the center of the nation’s fifth-largest

metro area.

The park is home to generations of rich history, a wide variety of modern-day

attractions, breathtaking views and more recreation opportunities than one

itinerary could possibly hold, including several worthy hikes.

At 2.3-miles, Double Butte Loop is a perfect, leisurely selection for both

mountain bikers and casual hikers, thanks to the generally wide, flat dirt path

that circumnavigates the massive sandstone buttes.

The most popular path is Hole-in-the-Rock Trail, a 0.2 mile-hike that offers 200

feet of elevation gain, which leads to a very appropriately named formation:

A hole in the rock’s "ceiling" that is believed to have been used by the ancient

Hohokam civilization to track the position of the sun. This spot is bustling during

sunset, but you’ll understand why once you see the views overlooking the

lagoon and the distant skyline.

Historic Mill Avenue Bridge), and choose a watercraft that suits your party size and

THINGS TO DO

Arizona State University

Tips for visiting Tempe’s iconic campus

Founded in 1885 — nearly three decades before Arizona earned statehood —

Arizona State University has a long, proud tradition of educational and athletic

excellence, and an energetic student spirit.

Naturally, Tempe has deep roots as a college town. But, depending on when you

visited last, there’s an evolution happening here.

In 2023, ASU ranked No. 1 in innovation among American universities, making it

the ninth consecutive year it’s taken the top spot in U.S. News & World Report’s

“Best Colleges” rankings. Additionally, the school has topped Times Higher

Education’s global impact chart since 2020.

It’s also the No. 1 public university in the U.S. chosen by international students

and No. 1 in engineering technology enrollment — to name just a few

distinguishing milestones. Of all the in-person students enrolled at ASU each

year, nearly 75% are located at the ASU Tempe Campus — one of the largest

campuses in the U.S. by student population. These are just a few indicators

that the Sun Devil experience — and the impact on the surrounding city — has

changed considerably since those early days.

Visitors will find a variety of ways to experience this essence on a visit to Tempe,

here are a few musts for your next itinerary:

ASU Sports

ASU Football

The Sun Devils take home-field advantage at Frank Kush Field at

Mountain America Stadium. In this program’s 127-year history,

the team has played in 33 bowl games and has won 17 conference

championships and three PAC-12 titles. The most notable players and

coaches to grace this gridiron are Pat Tillman and Terrell Suggs, and

Hall of Fame coaches Dan Devine and John Cooper.

Mountain America Stadium

Tucked between a pair of desert buttes, this stadium has cut an

imposing figure on the Tempe skyline since 1958. In addition to being

the home of the ASU Sun Devils football team, the 53,599-seat, openair

venue has hosted the NFL’s 1996 Super Bowl, the NCAA’s 2008

Insight Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006. The stadium has

been updated many times and most recently underwent a $304 million

renovation.

multi-purpose arena serves as the

home for ASU men’s and women’s

basketball, volleyball, gymnastics

and wrestling. Built in 1974, the

venue is known for its excellent

augmented with a multimilliondollar

center-court video scoreboard

and new game statistics boards.
