1. STUNNING SUNSETS 

The Valley of the Sun is known for its incredible 

sunsets filled with vibrant and unforgettable 

orange, yellow, pink and purple hues that perfectly 

complement the city skyline and mountain views. In 

Tempe, you’ll always get a good vantage point from 

Tempe Town Lake, “A” Mountain and a number of 

local hotels with rooftop pools. For something unique, take in the 

sunset at the Hole in the Rock at Papago Park.

2. EVENTS TO PLEASE EVERYONE 

Whether you’re shopping for local art at the award-winning Tempe 

Festival of the Arts or pushing yourself to the limit competing in the 

IRONMAN Arizona triathlon, there’s an event for everyone 

in Tempe. In addition to these landmark events, the 

city also has ongoing activities like live concerts 

at the District Stage at Tempe Marketplace, Music 

in the Garden featuring local musical talent at the 

Desert Botanical Garden, and an array of street

Arizona State University is one of the largest universities in the

In Tempe, you can shop for deals at Arizona Mills, find one-of-a-kind 

local goods along Mill Avenue, or peruse your favorite retail stores at 

Tempe Marketplace. Some of the most popular shopping gems include

Bookstore in south Tempe, Creations Boutique at Tempe Marketplace

8. SPRING TRAINING BASEBALL 

From February to March, Arizona is one of only two states in the U.S. 

where you can catch a spring training game, making it a must-do activity 

during your visit. It’s also the perfect way to experience the baseball 

preseason while enjoying beautiful weather at various venues across 

the Phoenix metro area. If you’re a Los Angeles Angels fan, swing by 

Tempe Diablo Stadium, where you’ll be able to cheer on your team. 

9. FAMILY FUN 

There’s no shortage of kid-approved activities in Tempe. Whether you 

want to knock down a few pins at Main Event Entertainment, watch 

a documentary come to life at ASU’s Marston 3-D Theater, or get up 

close and personal with underwater creatures at SEA LIFE Aquarium, 

there’s something for everyone in the family. For a splashing good 

time, head to Kiwanis Park, where you can cool off at The Cloud 

splash pad or float the day away at the Kiwanis Wave Pool.

celebrating all backgrounds, cultures, religious and sexual orientations. 

The city council and voters have moved forward with anti-discrimination 

legislation, resulting in the city earning a perfect score on the Human 

Rights Campaign Foundation’s annual Municipal Equality Index. 

Throughout the year, Tempe supports and promotes many cultural 

events that represent the diverse fabric of the community.

Located in the center of the greater Phoenix Metropolitan area, 

Tempe is easily accessible to and from surrounding cities such as 

Scottsdale, Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert. Options include car, 

bus and Valley Metro Rail, which runs from northwest Phoenix to east 

Mesa through Tempe. It’s also perfect for out-of-state travelers thanks 

to its 4-mile proximity to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

When those sunny days heat up, seek out some cool spots in Tempe. 

You’ll find a number of places for water fun, including the splash 

pad at Tempe Marketplace and The Cloud at Kiwanis Park, the city’s

After you splish and splash, bring a basket with sandwiches, snacks 

and cool drinks, and find a shady spot at Tempe Beach Park for a

FROZEN TREATS AT SPARKY’S OLD TOWN CREAMERY 

Continue your way down Mill Avenue and treat the fam to frozen 

delights. Known for its small-batch ice cream made from scratch, 

Sparky’s is where families go for some of the best ice cream in 

Tempe. Have a scoop (or two!), or try a malt, shake, smoothie, shaved

ART AT THE LAKE 

Start your day at Gallery at TCA (Tempe Center for the Arts), where 

you can view works of art by local and national artists covering a wide 

range of topics and perspectives. Since opening in 2007, the gallery 

has shown more than 150 large and small-scale art exhibitions and 

has featured more than 2,500 local and national artists. The gallery is 

open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. PRICE: Free 

ART ON CAMPUS 

Next on your art tour list is the ASU Art Museum, which hosts rotating 

contemporary art exhibits from established and emerging artists. 

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the building’s eye-catching 

design by Antoine Predock. Inside, explore three floors of year-round 

exhibitions by emerging and established artists in a variety of mediums.

Take a break from your walking tour and hop in the car to see some 

of the city’s best public works of art. With a robust public art program, 

Tempe is the perfect place to see innovative art while cruising through 

the city. Follow along with the City of Tempe’s public art map featuring 

Downtown Tempe and Tempe Town Lake. More than 80 public art 

pieces are featured—from sculptures and murals to bridge art and

Housed in what used to be ASU’s art annex building, Postino Annex

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly eatery that can satisfy your whole brood, a casual patio 

perfect for dining alfresco, a bright breakfast spot to fuel up for the day, or an international gem that will 

take you on a global culinary journey, Tempe has it all. You’ll also discover quaint pastry shops serving 

the sweetest of treats, cool coffee shops and tea rooms where you can relax with your favorite cup, and an 

exciting mix of restaurants in the heart of Downtown Tempe. 

There’s a lot of history in Tempe, much 

of which can be experienced at such 

spots as Casey Moore’s Oyster House, 

located a stone’s throw from Downtown 

Tempe. The eclectic Irish seafood pub 

has been a popular community haunt 

of locals and visitors for nearly four 

decades. There’s also the cash-only 

Chuckbox, a neighborly burger joint 

serving no-fuss, charbroiled patties 

since 1972. 

If your approach to dining in a new 

Perfect Pear Bistro 

city is to go where the locals go and the 

libations flow, make your way to Four 

Peaks Brewing Company, Pedal Haus Brewery and Postino Annex. The popular spots—all located within 

a two-mile stretch off University Drive—offer a great casual but modern atmosphere with signature 

American food, wine and beer, and outdoor patios to soak up the perfect weather. 

While Tempe has a laid-back vibe, you can find a few fancier gems such as Top of the Rock Restaurant at 

the Phoenix Marriott Resort Tempe at The Buttes, which features world-class contemporary cuisine made 

with seasonal ingredients and 360-degree window views of Tempe. Don’t miss the organic and natural 

ingredients served, along with a curated wine list, at Caffe Boa, or the innovative twist on Southwestern 

cuisine served at Terra Tempe Kitchen & Spirits, located at The Westin Tempe. 

Small, independent restaurants also fill the neighborhoods of Tempe, many that spotlight global cuisine, 

such as Café Lalibela, a family-owned restaurant in the heart of Tempe with an authentic Ethiopian 

lineup. Or local favorite, Hachi Ramen in south Tempe, specializing in making authentic Japanese ramen 

from scratch.

The Double Butte Loop Trail is 

one of the best-known routes, 

with a mostly wide, flat dirt path 

that circumnavigates the large red 

sandstone buttes. 

“A” MOUNTAIN 

Thanks to its convenient location 

in the heart of Downtown Tempe, 

“A” Mountain (officially known as 

Hayden Butte Preserve) offers a 

quick, high-intensity hike—with the 

Leonard Monti Trail gaining about 

250 feet in less than half a mile. 

SOUTH MOUNTAIN 

PARK AND PRESERVE 

The largest municipal park in the 

U.S., South Mountain Park, has 

trails suitable for every level of 

hiker: flat, steep, short, long and 

everything in between. If you’re 

up for a moderate challenge, the 

1.7-mile Marcos De Niza Trail is 

among the most popular loop 

options. 

PIESTEWA PEAK 

The Summit Trail at Piestewa 

Peak is a strenuous yet rewarding 

hike within the Phoenix 

Mountains Park and Recreation 

Area. In addition to 360-degree 

views from the top, it’s a climb 

that provides a heart-pumping 

workout. 

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN 

The Greater Phoenix area’s most 

visible landmark, Camelback 

Mountain, is a must-hike for

challenging sections and lots of 

fellow hikers; parking at the Echo 

Canyon trailhead is competitive 

on weekend mornings.
