Tempe prides itself on fostering a community of inclusivity by
celebrating all backgrounds, cultures, religious and sexual orientations.
about their neighbors and city at large. They make a point to involve the community in feedback on new initiatives, that feels very inclusive.”
Food
&
Drink
Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly eatery that can satisfy your whole brood, a casual patio
perfect for dining alfresco, a bright breakfast spot to fuel up for the day, or an international gem that will
take you on a global culinary journey, Tempe has it all. You’ll also discover quaint pastry shops serving
the sweetest of treats, cool coffee shops and tea rooms where you can relax with your favorite cup, and an
exciting mix of restaurants in the heart of Downtown Tempe.
There’s a lot of history in Tempe, much
of which can be experienced at such
spots as Casey Moore’s Oyster House,
located a stone’s throw from Downtown
Tempe. The eclectic Irish seafood pub
has been a popular community haunt
of locals and visitors for nearly four
decades. There’s also the cash-only
Chuckbox, a neighborly burger joint
serving no-fuss, charbroiled patties
since 1972.
If your approach to dining in a new
Perfect Pear Bistro
city is to go where the locals go and the
libations flow, make your way to Four
Peaks Brewing Company, Pedal Haus Brewery and Postino Annex. The popular spots—all located within
a two-mile stretch off University Drive—offer a great casual but modern atmosphere with signature
American food, wine and beer, and outdoor patios to soak up the perfect weather.
While Tempe has a laid-back vibe, you can find a few fancier gems such as Top of the Rock Restaurant at
the Phoenix Marriott Resort Tempe at The Buttes, which features world-class contemporary cuisine made
Restaurants with Great Patios
courtyards to restaurants equipped with outdoor games and
stellar views, there are endless opportunities to eat delicious
food while enjoying Arizona’s perfect temps all year round.
Tempe
By Angela Muniz
From one of the state’s first breweries to award-winning spots
tucked into almost every neighborhood, you could say craft
beer is “in-grained” in Tempe’s culture. Checking out local
breweries is as much a historic jaunt as it is an ale trail.
Fate Brewing Company
Fate Brewing Company starts out Tempe’s beer scene. Located
in a central Tempe neighborhood, you will enjoy this modern beer
garden and pub. Known for its GABF-winning Candy Bar Milk
Stout, it features other favorite brews like its American Pale Ale,
as well as spirits and a full menu.
Four Peaks Brewing Company
In 1996, the founders of Four Peaks Brewing Co. opened its doors
in a historic building almost as old as the city itself. Today, it is
now one of Arizona’s largest businesses and is known nationally
for award-winning brews like its Kilt Lifter Scottish-style ale and
Sun Bru German-style Kolsch.
Every Saturday, Four Peaks offers tours showcasing its historic
building and beer-making process with samples to sip along the
way. Small fees and reservations are required.
BIKE PATHS
Designated a Gold-Level Bicycle
Friendly Community by the
League of American Bicyclists,
Tempe features about 217 miles of
bikeways in all. Generous
bike lanes allow cyclists to
navigate safely on city streets
and the BIKEiT bike boulevard
system’s low-motorized traffic
volumes and speeds are ideal for
bicycle travel.
Find the unexpected side of the Sonoran Desert
in Tempe. An ideal location and picturesque
landscape make Tempe the perfect place to spend
a sunny day boating, hiking or biking.
Within and around the city, there’s no limit to
the activities and adventures—but here are a few
ideas to spark your imagination.
"A" Mountain
For a totally motor-vehicle-free
experience, take a spin on one
of the eight multi-use paths.
Popular routes run along Tempe
Town Lake, with spurs to the
north on the Cross-Cut Canal,
Grand Canal and Indian Bend
Wash. To the south, riders
can enjoy the extensive canal
system’s options, such as the
Highline Canal, Western Canal
and Kyrene Canal.
BIKE RENTALS
Whether you want to take a
two-hour ride or a seven-day
adventure, the Bicycle Cellar
can outfit you with the right set
of wheels—including a lock,
helmet, lights and a flat repair kit.
Their roster includes urban bikes,
mountain bikes, a tandem, or
even an e-bike equipped with a
kid hauler.
Tempe Town Lake
Papago Park
HIKING
PAPAGO PARK
Several trails wind through Papago
Park with views spanning across
the Valley of the Sun, Downtown
Tempe and Tempe Town Lake.
The Double Butte Loop Trail is
one of the best-known routes,
with a mostly wide, flat dirt path
that circumnavigates the large red
sandstone buttes.
“A” MOUNTAIN
Thanks to its convenient location
in the heart of Downtown Tempe,
“A” Mountain (officially known as
Hayden Butte Preserve) offers a
quick, high-intensity hike—with the
Leonard Monti Trail gaining about
250 feet in less than half a mile.
SOUTH MOUNTAIN
PARK AND PRESERVE
The largest municipal park in the
U.S., South Mountain Park, has
trails suitable for every level of
hiker: flat, steep, short, long and
everything in between. If you’re
up for a moderate challenge, the
1.7-mile Marcos De Niza Trail is
among the most popular loop
options.
PIESTEWA PEAK
The Summit Trail at Piestewa
Peak is a strenuous yet rewarding
hike within the Phoenix
Mountains Park and Recreation
Area. In addition to 360-degree
views from the top, it’s a climb
that provides a heart-pumping
workout.
CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN
The Greater Phoenix area’s most
visible landmark, Camelback
Mountain, is a must-hike for
its views and desert flora and
fauna. Be prepared for numerous
challenging sections and lots of
fellow hikers; parking at the Echo
Canyon trailhead is competitive
on weekend mornings.
TEMPE TOWN LAKE
If it floats, you’ll probably see it
on Tempe Town Lake. Kayaks,
boats to the mix: circular electric
boats with canopies and tables
that hold up to 10 people.
KIWANIS LAKE
No boating experience? No
problem! Boat Rentals of
America – Kiwanis Lake rents
single and double kayaks and
educational and athletic excellence, and an energetic student spirit. Of all the undergraduate and graduate students enrolled each
year, more than a third are located at the ASU Tempe Campus. If you’re here for a few hours—rather than four years—here’s a quick
look at the key landmarks to see.
ASU SPORTS
ASU FOOTBALL
The Sun Devils take home-field advantage at Frank Kush Field at Sun
Devil Stadium, where throughout its 125-year history, the team has
played in 33 bowl games and has won 17 conference championships
and three Pac-12 titles. The most notable players and coaches to
grace Frank Kush Field are Pat Tillman and Terrell Suggs, and Hall of
Fame coaches Dan Devine and John Cooper.
IT’S GAME TIME
The buzz begins with several pregame tailgate options, including the
Sun Devil Oasis fan-fest experience south of Desert Financial Arena.
To get the adrenaline pumping at the start of every game, fireworks
light up the sky and Sun Devils cheer to a video of Sparky, ASU’s
mascot, stomping on the opposing team’s bus. Fans who crave a
cold beer and game time snacks won’t be disappointed with options
ranging from the traditional Super Dog to pizza, burritos, Chick-fil-A
and shaved ice for those warm fall days.
FAN FEVER
Sun Devil fans are enthusiastic and boisterous, making it a
notoriously challenging environment for away teams. Clad in maroon
and gold from top to bottom, loyal fans carry on such game-day
traditions as jingling their keys during kickoffs, waving a “fork’s up”
three-finger hand gesture when there’s a third down and counting
mascot Sparky’s pushups whenever the Sun Devils score.
SUN DEVIL STADIUM
Tucked between a pair of desert buttes, Sun Devil Stadium has cut
an imposing figure on the Tempe skyline since 1958. In addition to
being the home of the ASU Sun Devil football team, the 53,599-seat
venue has hosted the National Football League’s 1996 Super Bowl,
the NCAA’s 2008 Insight Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to
2006. The stadium has been updated many times and most recently
underwent a $304 million renovation. thesundevils.com
Sun Devil Football Stadium
DESERT FINANCIAL ARENA
Just east of Sun Devil Stadium
sits Desert Financial Arena.
This 14,000-seat multi-purpose
arena serves as the home
for ASU men’s and women’s
basketball, volleyball, gymnastics
and wrestling. Built in 1974, the
venue is known for its excellent
sightlines, recently augmented
with a multimillion-dollar centercourt
video scoreboard and new
game statistics boards.
CACTUS SPORTS
Since 1992, Cactus Sports has
been a go-to for officially licensed
ASU clothing, merchandise and
gifts. Located in the heart of
Downtown Tempe, the shop is
locally owned and operated by
ASU Alumni, and you can feel
good about the fact that Cactus
Sports contributes royalties from
every purchase to support the
university. cactussports.com
SUN DEVIL CAMPUS STORE
Sure, the Sun Devil Campus Store
is where students come to buy
and sell textbooks and academic
supplies, but let’s be honest:
That’s not where the fun is. For
students, alumni and team fans,
the ASU spirit shines through
loud and clear with a full range of
ASU gifts and logo apparel from
popular brands such as Adidas,
Lululemon and Champion.
E. Orange St. - bkstr.com/
arizonastatestore
SUN DEVIL MARKETPLACE
In addition to a full roster of ASU
apparel and gifts, books, school
supplies and technology, the
Sun Devil Marketplace features
a Grab ‘N’ Go market for meals
and snacks. Upstairs, there’s an
adaptable community room for
hosting meetings and events
and a coffee and wine bar if you
just want to chill and relax.
HIDDEN GEMS ON THE ASU
TEMPE CAMPUS
“AIR APPARENT”, A
SKYSPACE DESIGNED BY
JAMES TURRELL
On the eastern edge of the
Tempe ASU Campus, near the
intersection of Rural and Terrace
Road, you will discover this
artistic interpretation of Native
American Hohokam shade
ramadas and pit houses. The
changing light display makes
this a special place to be at
sunset and sunrise.
PALM WALK
Extending from the Palm Walk
Overpass to the north, and the
Sun Devil Fitness Complex to the
south, is ASU’s iconic Palm Walk.
Lined with more than 100 palm
trees, the walk is the main route
through the center of campus—
and a classic Instagram moment
for any ASU visit.
PALM WALK OVERPASS
Also known as the University
Bridge, the Palm Walk Overpass
spans University Drive to
give pedestrians easy access
between the north and central
campus areas—and it’s a prime
location for sunset watching, too.
NOVUS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Speaking of bridges, a stylish
new pedestrian bridge on
University Drive connects the
Novus Innovation Corridor
with the ASU Tempe campus.
In addition to the architectural
appeal, steel fins keep things
cool during the day and provide
light at night.
SECRET GARDEN
Hidden between Dixie Gammage
Hall (on Forest Mall across
from Coor Hall) and West Mall
is the Secret Garden, a serene
courtyard with lush vegetation
and comfy seating that provides
an escape from the hustle and
bustle of campus life.
OLD MAIN
With its prominent place in the
center of campus, this historic
three-story, red-brick Victorian
building is among the most
beautiful architectural works
at ASU. It’s also the site of an
impromptu speech by President
Theodore Roosevelt when he
came to Arizona to dedicate the
Roosevelt Dam in 1911.
HAYDEN LIBRARY
Also located in the heart of
campus, the iconic midcentury
Hayden Library completed a $90
million renovation in 2020, which
focused on increasing accessibility
and engagement, and enhanced
features, including a new welcome
plaza, a gold staircase and a mural
honoring indigenous cultures.
