GET
OUTSIDE
On horseback
Experience the
Sonoran Desert
the way Chandler’s
earliest residents did:
on horseback. KOLI
Equestrian Center invites
guests to ride side-byside
(instead of nose-totail)
through the Gila River
Indian Reservation. Along
the way, tribe members
share stories of their
native lands, teach about
local plants and point out
desert animals, including
wild horses.
In sneakers
You don’t have to leave the
pavement to explore the
Sonoran Desert. Veterans
Oasis Park has a paved walk
around its five-acre lake,
as well as more than four
miles of easy-to-walk trails.
Paseo Vista Recreation
Area’s walking trails
connect to the Paseo Trail,
a 6.5-mile path along the
Consolidated Canal.
On wheels
Want to cover more ground while in the Sonoran Desert? You can bike along the trails
at South Mountain Park and San Tan Regional Park instead of hiking them. Don’t have a
mountain bike? No problem. AZ Bike Rentals in Chandler rents mountain bikes, while Cactus
Adventures leads guided rides (bikes and all gear provided) through South Mountain Park.
In hiking boots
Leave the city behind and hit the trails at South
Mountain Park for a deeper look at the Sonoran
Desert. The park has more than 50 miles of
hiking trails, ranging from the one-mile Kiwanis
Trail to the more challenging Telegraph Pass
and National trails. At San Tan Regional Park,
the Moonlight Trail provides a short, easy trek.
If you’re up for more of a challenge, try the 6.4-
mile San Tan Trail, which takes you through a
large part of the 10,000-acre park.
