and fascinating animals. At Veterans Oasis Park, 

you can encounter a variety of native flora, from 

palo verde trees to desert marigolds. You also can 

get up close with the iconic saguaro cactus, the 

quintessential symbol of the desert found only in 

the desert southwest. The park also is home to a 

wide range of wildlife, including rabbits, squirrels, 

lizards and snakes, as well as more than 150 bird 

species. 

Other Chandler parks, like Paseo Vista Recreation 

Area, also offer access to hiking trails. Nearby, 

South Mountain Park and San Tan Regional Park 

have hiking and mountain biking trails that immerse 

you in the Sonoran Desert—and reward you with 

some pretty awesome views of the area.

Leave the city behind and hit the trails at South 

Mountain Park for a deeper look at the Sonoran 

Desert. The park has more than 50 miles of 

hiking trails, ranging from the one-mile Kiwanis 

Trail to the more challenging Telegraph Pass 

and National trails. At San Tan Regional Park, 

the Moonlight Trail provides a short, easy trek. 

If you’re up for more of a challenge, try the 6.4- 

mile San Tan Trail, which takes you through a 

large part of the 10,000-acre park. 

On water 

KOLI Equestrian Center 

For a different perspective of the 

Sonoran Desert, take a narrated 

cruise of Canyon Lake on the Dolly 

Steamboat. The 1.5-hour cruise 

passes striking rock formations, 

saguaro cacti and desert wildlife, 

including big horn sheep on the 

lake’s steep rock walls. Twilight 

dinner and astronomy dinner cruises 

let you see Canyon Lake and the 

surrounding desert in, literally, a

Crayola Experience 

Desert Breeze Park and Railroad 

It isn’t often that a kid can walk into a rainbow, but the Crayola 

Experience at Chandler Fashion Center comes pretty close. The 

20,000-square-foot destination allows children – and adults 

– to explore a world of color through 19 interactive, hands-on 

attractions that take coloring to the next level. Visitors can name 

their own crayon (complete with a custom wrapper) and pose 

inside a photo booth that turns the photo into a coloring page. 

The Crayola Experience also features several melt-and-mold 

stations, including one that allows kids to make pieces of art from 

dripping, melted crayons. While at Chandler Fashion Center –

Brewing Company, floral-themed murals at Overstreet, and Day

One of the newest—and exciting—murals to join the city’s 

growing list of street art can be found in the Hightown 

community, at Espo’s Mexican Food. Created by artist 

Edgar Fernandez, the Pueblo Alto mural pays homage to the
