JEROME
The city in the sky
Jerome was at one time the most talked about wild west mining
camp in America - it’s now listed on the National Historic Register.
Its population went from 15,000 in its heyday, to a “ghost
town” of under 50 people, to its role today as a center for the
arts with unique shops, sophisticated galleries, wineries,
tasting rooms, bistros, hotels and B&Bs - with just under
500 permanent residents. Jerome’s scenic view of the
entire Verde Valley offers wonderful photographic
opportunities.
Explore
u Book a fun and informative Haunted or Historical tour and hear the
many fascinating tales of “The Wickedest Town in the West!”
u Travel back in time at the Jerome State Historical Park. Explore
the history of the eye-catching landmark known as the Douglas
Mansion and the Douglas family through photographs, artifacts,
minerals and a 3-D model of the town and underground mines.
azstateparks.com/jerome
u Experience the Mine…The Gold King Mine & Ghost Town displays
early machinery of the mining era in Jerome and will round out this
step back in time. While there, visit the petting zoo, pan for gold,
view historic buildings and vintage transportation.
u Stroll Jerome’s downtown and visit the Mine Museum and art
galleries - like the Jerome Artists Co-Op, a gallery in the Jerome Hotel,
or the Jerome Art Center, working studios in the Old Jerome High
School, featuring paintings, pottery, and more, all by local artists.
u Enjoy a brew at a Jerome saloon or a glass of wine in one of Jerome’s
tasting rooms.
u The Mingus Mountain Area, located southwest of Jerome (off State
Rte. 89A) in the Prescott National Forest offers opportunities for
hiking, biking, camping and more.
Dine
Whether you’re in the mood for steak, Mexican fare, a burger, BBQ,
or breakfast, Jerome’s mostly quirky restaurants will make your
stomach smile. For instance, in a hospital-turned-hotel (Jerome
Grand Hotel), the upscale Asylum Restaurant pairs American &
Southwestern fare with scenic views. Or, located in Arizona’s oldest
operating restaurant building (the English Kitchen, 1899), Bobby
D’s BBQ serves up slow-smoked entrees and fresh salads that
you’ll likely enjoy as much as the atmosphere.
