‘I’m going to come back
and ram-raid your shop’

RETAIL CRIME has increased
significantly in the district over the
past year.
And dairy owners Shamina and
Shehan Saparamadu are facing the
onslaught on a daily basis.
Latest police data shows for the year
ending March 1, reported retail theft
went up 48 per cent, from 95 instances
to 141.
There was also a 56 per cent
increase in assaults, with 496
compared to 292.
The Saparamadus’ own the Lincoln
Dairy on Robert St and often catch
shoplifters – many of whom are from
local schools.
Shamina said 14 youths had been
trespassed in the last “couple of
months”.
They have also had a number
of confrontations with the young
offenders or their parents.
Shamina said a trespassed shoplifter
told her: “I’m going to come back and
f***ing ram-raid your shop”.
The Saparamadus said calls
to police often go unanswered and
they have had little response from
Lincoln High School.
Said Shehan: “The Lincoln High
School principal (Kathy Paterson)
suggested we stop
all students from
coming into
the store, but I
can’t do that
as what
will
happen
to all my
business.
“The schools
have said it is
not their responsibility.”
Paterson did not
respond to calls
from the Selwyn
Times.
Shamina said they
have also caught pupils from Lincoln
Primary School stealing.
The Saparamadus told principal
Chris Nord about the shoplifting and
the school had assisted them where
possible.

A SCULPTURE displayed in the
Lincoln town centre has sold for
more than $100,000.
The Llew Summers sculpture
Ariel was on loan from the Tai
Tapu Sculpture Garden and displayed
in Gerald St to enhance
the main street.
It was part of a collaboration
between the district council, the
Lincoln Community Committee
and the sculpture garden.

Joyce couldn’t say
how much it sold for,
but the Selwyn Times
understands it went for
$122,000. It had a listed
price on the sculpture garden
website of $110,000.

Titan is a layered corten steel
cube on top of a pole and measures
2.7m high, 40cm higher
than Ariel.
Like the previous sculpture
it is on loan and available for
purchase, with a list price of
$26,800.
Lincoln University has
a number of the late Llew
Summers artworks, including an
outdoor sculpture commissioned
in 1992 by the university called
Joy of Living.
There is no confirmed date for
the installation of Titan.

“We worked with them to help
identify who the students might
have been.”
Nord said after the pupils have
been identified, they are not punished
by the school. The school
leaves any disciplinary action to
police.
“It concerns us that there are
students out there in our uniforms
shoplifting . . . what they
do outside of school is out of our
control.”
While the school doesn’t have
any specific programmes focused
on theft or shoplifting, Nord said
they are covered in the school
values.
“We have strong values as far
as our school vision and values
go. Within that sits respect and
around that is the conversations
of what does that looks like.”
The police data shows crime is
up 42 per cent across the district.
From February 2022 to March
this year, there were 657 more
crimes committed than in the
previous 12 months.
The Saparamadus say it’s time
people realised there is a crime
problem in the district and
started talking about it, rather
than just ignoring it.
“We have to talk about – if we
don’t who’s going to stop them,”
Shehan said.
They have signs throughout
the store warning people if they
are caught stealing, they will be
banned.
Since opening two years ago,
the dairy has been ram-raided
three times. After the most
recent incident in August, the
Government helped pay for extra
security measures, including fog
cannons and bollards.
On May 30, a group tried to
break into the store but could not
get through the security doors
and bars. They only managed to
smash the glass.
Shehan said, while the extra
security was appreciated, he
thought the money should have
been spent on preventing crime
in the first place.
“It is just a band-aid and
doesn’t solve the problem. The

money should be spent on rehabilitation.”
The Saparamadus said they
really enjoy living in the community,
and the people stealing only
make up a very small percentage
of those who visit the store.
“We try to support our community
as much as we can,”
Shehan said.
They also want to see more
police patrolling the area. “We
hardly see the local police. If
they did patrol – an hourly patrol
or something overnight – that
would be good.”
Since May 1, one officer is
based at the Lincoln police station
regularly, down from three
following the introduction of the
new 24-hour service model based
out of the Rolleston station.

More police patrols needed

wants more police patrols in the
district following the increase in
crime.
Police data shows the crime
rate rose by 42 per cent between
February 28 last year and March
1 compared to the previous 12
months, with 657 more crimes
committed over the last 12
months.

concerning.
“It is definitely a concern to us,
we should be the safest district
in the country,” he said.
“We have definitely seen
the crime increasing . . . the
residents are talking about it and
we are seeing more reports of it
on social media.”

“I honestly have not seen an
increase in patrol cars in the last
couple of years.”
The Rolleston Community
Patrol was the second volunteerrun
crime prevention group to
be formed in the district, after
the Selwyn Community Patrol.
Rolleston Community Patrol
leader Karen Evans said she has
noticed the increase in crime
around the district.
“Like most Rolleston
residents, we’ve noticed an
increase in crime of all sorts,
but especially car burglaries and
vandalism,” Evans said.
Selwyn police moved to a 24-
hour service model last month,
which is expected to continue
for a six-month trial period, and
promised to put more police on
the streets.
Said Pratap: “We were really
happy to see Rolleston go to
24 hours. Because we are a
population of 28,000 people so it
only makes sense.”
While many were happy to
see extra police resourcing
in the district, concerns were
raised that some stations were
short-staffed. After the changes
were implemented, the Lincoln
station went from having three
officers to one, while Leeston
went from three officers to two.
Mayor Sam Broughton did not
answer specific questions about
the increase in crime or whether
he was aware of it.
He said public safety and
security are a priority for the
district council.
“Our police do an incredible
job and in response to
our growth, they recently
introduced a 24/7 public safety
team supporting Selwyn
communities,” Broughton said.
“We continue to work closely
with the police and ongoing
collaboration is crucial in
maintaining a safe and enjoyable
community in Selwyn.”

LINCOLN University students
have taken online action to stop
their end-of-lectures party being
watered down.
The annual Garden Party will
be replaced with a new Lawn
Party on October 20 – and only
Lincoln students will be able to
attend.
Previous events have been
open to anyone over 18,
with many
Canterbury
University
students
attending.
But in a video
message to
students, Lincoln
University
Students’ Association
president
Amy Wells said she was “gutted”
to see the event changed.
“Myself and the rest of the
team have tried really hard to
deliver the Garden Party that
you know and love,” Wells said.
She said due to factors outside
of LUSA’s control, it had “been
forced” to make changes to the
event. Wells did not specify what
factors had led to the changes.
“We’re all disappointed about
this and I’ve shed my fair share
of tears.”
In response to the announcement,
Lincoln University student
Reece Michelle started an
online petition at Change.org to
get the original event reinstated.
The petition now has 1290 signatures.
“This takes away the very essence
of Garden Party as it was a
chance for us to show our peers
across the country what a good
time really is,” Michelle wrote
about the petition.
“We feel, as a student body, we
have been severely misrepresented
and our student experience
drastically depreciated.”
Michelle said the event has
become a staple of the student
calendar. UC hosts a similar

VENTING AT TERRACE

The cold weather caused problems
for Terrace Downs Resort when
two of its 2-tonne LPG gas
cylinders began venting into the
air due to the frost. Hororata and

built in Kaituna Valley may shift

Collective said it was relieved

Fire service stalwart clocks up 50 years

WHEN NEVILLE Carter first
joined the fire service he just
wanted to fight fires, but after 50
years he has done much more
than that.
Carter, 67, joined the Southbridge
Volunteer Fire Brigade in
1973 as a 17-year-old.
He followed in his father’s
footsteps; Albert was one of the
brigade’s founding members
in 1948, after he returned from
World War 2.
“My father was a member for
35 years,” said Carter.
“As a young fella, I followed
him around at functions and
Christmas parties so I’ve always
been lined up to join the brigade.”
When Carter joined, the
brigade was overseen by the
Ellesmere County Council.
The most significant change
he has noticed in 50 years is the
equipment.
“When I joined there was no
breathing apparatus so you just
went into a house fire and hit the
floor and fought the fire until
you couldn’t breathe, then (you
would) go out and come back in
when you’d had a rest.”
Without breathing apparatus,
Carter was left to breathe in
many unknown fumes.
There was also no communication
tools, like radios, or modern
protection gear.
“In those days you’d have
gumboots, plastic leggings, a
lancer jacket with a belt, a plastic
helmet and gloves.”
Carter said the pants would
sometimes melt in the extreme
heat.
“There were a few times the
pants would begin to melt onto
your jeans.”
Dealing with trauma is one of
the harder things Carter has had
to manage.
“You just have to put it in the
back of your mind and move on.
“Take every incident as it
comes and give it your best shot,
put it in the back of your mind
and move on to the next one,” he
said.
“I only joined the fire service
to fight fires, but we do all these
cardiac arrests, car accidents.”
As a volunteer Carter would
often miss spending time with
his family.
“You end up just about to go
down the river for a swim on
a hot nor’west day and the fire
siren goes, and then I’m gone for
a day or so.”
A builder, Carter helped build
the current Southbridge station
in 2014 where his old workshop
was, after the brigade bought
the land.
He has also done work on
other stations in Selwyn and

112 tests for the All Blacks,
Carter has spent plenty of time
on the rugby field.
“I spent 10 years (1973-
83) playing rugby with the
Canterbury Fire Brigade Rugby
team.”
The Southbridge stalwart is
now planning a step back from
being on the front line. Carter
will still remain in the brigade,
but more on the operational
support side and training new
recruits.
“I’d like to help the young
fellas as much as I can because it
can be quite demanding.”

Wet weather can add to
driving woes in winter
NO MATTER where you live in Aotearoa,
there are always going to be wet and rainy
days. It is important to plan ahead, stay
alert, slow down, and drop back.
During winter, there isn’t as much
sunlight and the frequency of rain usually
increases, which makes driving difficult.
Stopping distances nearly double on
wet roads, and when combined with a
decrease in visibility, it can be a recipe for
disaster if motorists aren’t prepared.
Before the wetter season arrives, check
the tyres on your vehicle are correctly
inflated, have plenty of tread and are
fitted appropriately to give your vehicle
maximum grip on the road. Motorists
should also see if their windscreen wipers
need replacing.
It takes a lot longer to stop your vehicle
in wet conditions, so increase your
following distance between yourself and
the vehicle in front of you and reduce
speed. For example, the two-second rule
should be a four-second rule when wet.
Look out for any road signs warning of
flooding and keep an eye on the road for
excess surface water. It is also important
to slow down when taking corners to
avoid sliding into the other lane or off the
road.
With more moisture in the air, if you
need to defog your windscreen, make sure
to use both the heater and air conditioner,
and turn off air recirculation, to keep the
air dry and prevent your windscreen from
fogging up even more.
If it is raining, dip your headlights to
make it easier for other road users to see
you.
Even though the weather is wet, it is still
important to regularly clean your vehicle
so water runs off the windscreen easier, to
help improve visibility.

Programme gets
2500 pupils active
ACTIVATION SPECTACULAR is under
way at the Selwyn sports and aquatic
centres.
The Selwyn Sports Trust’s four-week
programme has 2500 year 5, 6,
7 and 8 pupils taking part in 20
sports and physical activities on
rotation at the two venues until
next Friday.
Said trust community activity
and events manager Jacinda
Valentine: “We’ve completely reimagined
term 2 winter sport this
year and put all activities under
the roof at both the Selwyn Sports
Centre and aquatics centre.
“Both are such great facilities, it’s awesome
seeing our young people experience
what Selwyn has to offer and link with
sport leads from around Canterbury.”
Poor weather caused major disruptions
to the trust’s winter sport programme
last year with more than half the days
cancelled. The trust decided to deliver the
programme in doors this year to ensure
the pupils from 12 schools wouldn’t miss
out due to the weather.
“We’ve had amazing support from the
(district council), and a number of sport

and non-traditional sport providers, to
be able to put the Spectacular together.
Knowing that we can lock in all times and
rotations without the risk of cancellation
makes planning so much easier
and our tamariki don’t miss out,”
said Valentine.
The programme offers traditional
sports like golf, cricket,
volleyball, hockey, badminton
and water polo, plus other more
unique offerings such as hungerball
(modified football) and
elastics.
“From artistic gymnastics to
ultimate frisbee, from life guarding
to ki-o-rahi, we have made a real effort
to include as many sports and physical
activities as possible to allow our young
people a real chance to try something new
and have some fun.”
The trust has added parasports, such as
wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball,
boccia and blind sports, to the programme
and partnered with the Halberg
Foundation, Parafed Canterbury and
Basketball NZ.
Rolleston College students are helping
to deliver the programme.

Flat tyre jump-starts
project to teach
basic auto skills
CHANGING A TYRE probably wasn’t
among the skills Giorgia Hickey thought
she would learn at Lincoln University.
The Bachelor of Viticulture and
Oenology student was in a friend’s truck
when it got a flat tyre – and she realised she
“wasn’t too sure what to do”.
But Hickey didn’t let the situation deflate
her. Instead it jump-started the idea of
teaching students’ basic auto-skills.
As a future leaders scholar at the
university, she works on beneficial projects
for the community.
With a team of five other scholars (Troy
Volman, Brock Stuart, Charlie Ludbrook,
Levi Astle and Anna Stuart), she decided to
teach high school and university students
“what to do” when their own vehicles’
breakdown.
“We headed to GB Motors in Sydenham
and got taught how to change a tyre, jumpstart
a car and check important things
under your bonnet,” Hickey said.
The team then shared their knowledge
with Rolleston College students and on
campus. Prizes were handed out to the
winners of two car-related quizzes and for
learning how to change a tyre and jump
start a vehicle.
“Alongside teaching the skills, we also
created a booklet for students to aid in
remembering these skills in the long term.
“We also contacted local mechanics and
vehicle-associated businesses, and got some
awesome prizes, including emergency
breakdown kits, car cleaning kits, WOF
vouchers and much more,” Hickey said.
The district council road safety team,
VINZ Rolleston, Challenge Lincoln,
Springston Auto and Rolleston Automotive
helped out with the auto-skills programme.
“Overall I heard students enjoyed it and
learnt something new. Most that attended
had not known these skills.”
Hickey said when the students encounter
a problem with their vehicles, they won’t
find themselves in the position she was in
when her friend’s truck got a flat tyre.
Legal Matters
A Due Review - The
Retirement Villages Act
The Retirement Commission is
required to monitor the effects
of the Retirement Villages Act
2003 (the Act), its Regulations,
and the Retirement Villages Code
of Practice 2008. This process
is well underway following the
release of a White Paper by the
CFFC (Commission for Financial
Capability – sometimes known
as the industry’s “regulatory
watchdog”). The White Paper
recommended that a full policy
review should be undertaken to
analyse future trends, consider
if protections are adequate and
able to adapt to change, and to
investigate different models. The
common “license to occupy” model
has long been the dominant one
and precedes the Act and Code
which were largely drafted with
this model in mind.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban
Development is now working
with the retirement sector on
reviewing the Retirement Villages
Act. The purpose of the Act is to
protect the interests of residents
and intending residents; and
to enable retirement villages to
develop under a legal framework
that is simple for residents and
village operators to understand.
The review is expected to consider
whether or not the current
legislation, associated Codes, and
Regulations remain fit for purpose
to ensure:
1. Suitable protections for
residents of retirement villages
and intending residents;
2. A balance is struck between the
responsibilities and rights of the
residents and operations of the
retirement villages; and
3. The future viability of the
retirement village sector and
its ability to provide a range of
retirement housing options.
The review isn’t limited to existing
and intending residents. It is
expected the review will consider
the rights of exiting residents.
The assistance we offer to exiting
residents and their families is
no less important. We expect
the review to consider minimum
standards with regard to the
termination of weekly fees once
the dwelling is vacant; the resale
and return to the resident of the
capital; and the treatment of the
deferred management fee and
capital gains and losses.
It has been almost 20 years since a
review of the Act was undertaken.
We consider this timely and look
forward to the discussion paper
which should be released in
September.

Surprise over Government
decision not to fund flood
prevention plan

I AM FEELING deflated and
disappointed by the lack of Government
foresight and investment in flood
protection for our region.
As the regional council in New Zealand’s
largest region, it feels like we are
being neglected when it comes to futureproofing
Canterbury. I know others feel
the same.
That’s not to say support isn’t needed
for areas badly impacted by Cyclone
Gabrielle – we received considerable support
during the earthquake recovery, so
we know the response up north is critical
– however, to not invest in protection of
other at-risk areas in Waitaha is shortsighted.
Flooding is the number one natural
disaster in New Zealand and, with the
impacts of climate change becoming
more significant and frequent, we are at
risk here in Canterbury.
Along with other regional councils,
Environment Canterbury made a joint
submission to the Government asking for
co-investment in a major flood protection
programme. Our proposal was for
central and local governments to coinvest
$257 million over the next three
years, to fund 92 urgent flood protection
projects across Aotearoa.
We have been asking central
Government to co-invest with us in
flood prevention measures and river
management since 1989, however it
has been ratepayers across the country
footing the bill.
The recent devastation of Cyclone
Gabrielle could happen anywhere in the
South Island, and we shouldn’t wait for
that to happen before taking action. Prevention
is still better than a cure.
We thought we had a strong case for
funding in the 2023 Budget, especially
given what’s at risk if there is significant
flooding along our 78,000 kilometres
of river systems. That includes national
assets such as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency roads, KiwiRail bridges that run
near rivers, power and internet infrastructure
– which would all be impacted,
and disrupt our supply chains in the
event of another major flood event.
And that doesn’t factor in our ongoing
ability to live in some areas, or people’s
ability to get insurance or how events
might impact on premiums – a sad
reality that some families in the badly
affected areas in the North Island are
grappling with.
I am hoping this decision by the
Government isn’t final. I will be working
over the coming days and weeks with my
regional colleagues around the country
to make sure our concerns are heard in
Wellington.

species living in NZ

decomposition of plant,
animal and fungal
material, and biological
control of pest species.
Roughly 5500 endemic
Diptera or flies are found
in New Zealand.
In comparison, I’ve only
found 62 fly species in our
Lincoln backyard, which
are a mixture of exotic,
native and endemic species.
One of these, the
false stable fly, Muscina
stabulans, is a species that
could easily be mistaken
with the house fly, given
they are in the same family.
Muscina stabulans is,
however, a little larger at
8mm and has four dark
stripes along its thorax.
This species has a close
ecological association

with humans, known as
synanthropy, so has a
cosmopolitan distribution.
Larvae or maggots of
this species are 6-7mm by
1-1.5mm and whitish in
colour.
They feed on various
kinds of decomposing

carrion, faeces, fungi, and
fruit. There have been rare
cases of myiasis where
larvae of this species have
been found in intestines of
humans, but on the whole,
the false stable fly does a
great job of cleaning up
dead, decaying matter in
our environment.

Prebbleton finally get shot
at Combined Country title

FOR THE first time in the
club’s history, Prebbleton have a
chance to win the Luisetti Seeds
Combined Country title when
they take on Ashburton Celtic
on Saturday.
Prebbleton made their first
combined final with a 15-10 win
over Waihora at the weekend,
while the Magpies suffered semifinal
heartbreak for the second
year in a row.
The final will be played at
Prebbleton Domain as it was
Ellesmere’s turn to host it.
Celtic overcame Kaiapoi 23-21
after a nail-biting second half to
make the final.
But it was a familiar semi-final
ending for Waihora, who narrowly
lost to Prebbleton in last
year’s Coleman Shield semi-final
28-27 after a Ted Coleman penalty
in the dying minutes.
Prebbleton managed a late try
in the first half to go into the
break leading 7-0. Waihora’s
only try came from an intercept
by winger Josh Brown. Another
Prebbleton try soon followed to
put the home side up by 15-10.
Prebbleton head coach Simon
Fitzgerald said it was a tight
battle and both teams failed to
capitalise on all their chances.
“We made errors, which let the
opposition back into the game,
and gave away 17 penalties while
Waihora gave away seven.”
Waihora dominated periods
of the semi-final, but head coach
Ross Soper said they failed
to make the most of it when
needed.
“We kept making mistakes at
the wrong times and had the opportunity
to win the game with a
try in the corner, but the ball was
fumbled, which was the story of
the day,” Soper said.
Prebbleton’s defence has been
integral this season and ultimately
won them the semi-final.

Said Fitzgerald: “It was an
incredible defensive effort, with
about 200 tackles made at a 90
per cent completion rate.”
He said they will need to
improve their lineouts, set pieces
and maintain their strong defence
against Celtic.
“The focus is just on us.
“Celtic will stick to their
processes and hold on to the ball,
but we’ll look to grind out on
defence.”
While Prebbleton will have
the luxury of playing at home
again, Celtic will make the 75km
journey from Ashburton.
Fitzgerald said playing the
team’s first combined final at
home will be a “bonus”.
“Our supporters have been
great all year,” he said.
Waihora now turn their focus
to winning the Coleman Shield
for the first time since 2018, with
a week off before they take on
Lincoln-Rolleston on June 20.
Both Prebbleton and Waihora
have recorded maximum points
so far.
The remaining Ellesmere

Help us find the family
of Margaret McNeally
We’re looking to reunite the memorial to a young woman with her family and solve
a 148-year-old mystery.
Margaret McNeally was 12 years-old when she died on 20 April 1875, she was
buried in Springston Cemetery and her family placed a wooden marker over her
grave to remember her.
Almost 150 years later that headstone was discovered by Council staff damaged
and in a patch of bushes at Springston Cemetery. The headstone has been stored
by the Council and we are hoping to reunite it with the family.

Leanne Page says the Council would love to get it back to the family.
“We don’t know much about this young lady, but if anyone’s out there from her
relatives we’d love to get this back to them, to help commemorate their relative.
Wooden headstones are rare in our cemeteries so this is a special piece historically,
but most importantly it’s a memory of a precious young woman and we’d like to see
them reunited.”

Work going well to preserve rare
native species
A major weed control project in Rakaia Gorge is progressing well, with some
impressive gains in the first 12 months.
The four-year operation will help protect native biodiversity and significant
ecosystems with well over 12,000 cherries and sycamore controlled in the
2022 season.
The project is a collaboration between the Council, Environment Canterbury,
landowners, Manawa Energy’s Rakaia Fund — administered by the Rakaia
Catchment Environmental Enhancement Society, and Toitū Te Whenua Land
Information New Zealand.
Ashburton District Council has also contributed by removing several old-man
pines to curtail wilding spread into the
wider project area.
The team has used high-tech drone and
GPS technology to survey the area, and
plan and track work in the hazardous
steep terrain and bluffs of the Gorge.
Council project lead Andy Spanton says
the hard-work of the first year will give
the team essential information to guide
the future work.
An ecological assessment of the gorge
in 2019 found at least 16 threatened and at-risk native plant species, including
Canterbury pink broom and rōhutu/myrtle — both nationally critical — along
with others that are regionally uncommon.
Landowner David Harper said he’s proud to be involved and is grateful to
everyone involved.
"The Rakaia Gorge holds a special place in our hearts. We feel very excited
that this is just the beginning of looking after this very important place. This
will be something that future generations will carry forward."
Plan to transform drains to streams takes
next step
A plan to reimagine drains and transform them into streams along the Ararira
catchment has reached a key milestone.
Started in 2013, Living Water (a partnership between the Department of
Conservation and Fonterra) was an ambitious plan to reimagine the 76kms
of council drains and a similar length of private drains in the Ararira/LII
catchment, from traditional mostly straight drains, with steep banks,
into streams.
A ceremony has been held recently to mark the end of work by the Living
Water programme and a hand over to the Council of the vision to continue
transforming the streams. The ceremony included other key stakeholders and
contributors to this programme; representatives from Te Taumutu Rūnanga,
Environment Canterbury, and the LII Drainage Committee, supported by
consultants Aqualinc, EOS Ecology and Cawthron Institute.
Together the group produced a high-level Catchment Management Plan and
Implementation Guide, capturing the vision of the project and how it could be
implemented both in the Ararira/LII catchment and across our district.
The Council is now working through the plans and how it can continue the
work, rethinking the drains to be streams, support the land and gain better
ecological outcomes.

Disposing of hot ashes safely
A warm fire in the fireplace is one of the best things about winter, but without care it can quickly
become a hazard. One of the easiest ways fires start is not disposing properly of hot ashes. Ashes
can stay hot long after a fire has gone out and they can and do start fires in household rubbish bins.
Hot ashes have also started fires in rubbish trucks and transfer stations.
Always remember — bucket, bag it and bin it.
• Using a small metal shovel, scoop ash from your fireplace into a metal bucket with a lid. It's
really important that you only use a metal bucket or container and not something that could
easily catch fire from any residual heat left in the ashes such as plastic or cardboard.
• Take the bucket outside, away from any buildings, and douse with water.
• Leave to cool for at least 5 days.
Once the ash has been safely cooled you can use it sparingly in your garden by spreading thinly
over your lawn or stirring thoroughly into your home compost pile, or empty the cold ash into a
rubbish bag and place it into your rubbish bin. Please do not place ash into your recycling or
organics bin.

High school student blazes
trail in top grade netball

WHEN TYLA Hira stepped
on court five weeks ago, the
trailblazing player wrote himself
into the Selwyn Netball Centre’s
history books.
The 16-year-old Lincoln High
student became the first male to
play in the premier 1 grade, six
years after he took up the sport
because his older sister Bobbie
played.
Hira can be found playing
alongside Bobbie for Halswell
Rugby League A. He typically
plays in the goal shoot bib but
has the versatility to play in any
position.
Hira played football growing
up, but now admits he “can’t
kick a ball to save himself”.
“I played football from when I
was three (and) got into my first
netball team in year 6 because
my sister played and never really
played football again,” he said.
Hira made his way up the
senior grades at Selwyn and is
in his first season playing for the
Halswell Rugby League Netball
Club.
The young team are new
to the premier grade, but the
opposition players and coaches
are aware of Hira’s athleticism
and talent.
“It’s scary because people
know how to set up on me
straight away,” Hira said.
“They’ve heard about me and
know how I play.”
Hira was Selwyn’s first male
representative player when
he took the court for the
district’s under-16 B team at the
Tupuranga tournament over
King’s Birthday weekend.
The number of males playing
at Selwyn Netball Centre has
continually grown each year.
This season, there are 57 male
players in all grades across the
17 clubs.
Last week the Selwyn Times
reported on the first all boys
team, the ‘Westie Wekas’. The
seven-boy team play on Monday
nights at the Selwyn Sports
Centre in the year 3 and 4
FutureFerns grade.
Male players can take part in
Selwyn’s year 1-8 grades, but at
senior level clubs are required
to seek a dispensation before
confirming any male player’s
position in the team. Hira has
had to get a dispensation for the
last four years.

so it’s awesome to see.”
On Friday nights, Hira plays
for Suburbs in the Christchurch
men’s A grade. It’s his second
season playing men’s netball.
“The physicality and pace is
a lot more intense in the men’s
grade, while out here at Selwyn
it’s a lot more about structure,”
he said.
Playing in the Selwyn premier
grade was an unexpected
surprise for Hira. He only
trialled for HRLNC because his
sister was also trying out for the
team after she left school and
could no longer play for Lincoln
High.
Hira stayed and to the
surprise of many HRLNC have
already won two games this
season, one of which was a 41-40
comeback win over Burnham B
in round 5.
“We were hoping to make
premier 2 after grading day, but
expected premier 3,” he said.
“But I’m really enjoying it. I
just love it.”

New Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted
in the vicinity of 823 Rockwood Rd, Hororata
area over the period 16-18 June 2023.
The exercise will involve up to 25 personnel
of 3 Field & Emergency Response Squadron
from Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers carrying out
training activities within the boundaries
of the property.
No arms or ammunition will be used during
this training. The exercise will also involve
the movement of troops and vehicles by

Cats love to survey what is happening
around them, so having a vertical
platform up high is an easy way to
keep your cat happy. Whether it is a cat
tree, shelves or a cat bridge cat, these

bookcase or shelf near a window offering
