CONNECTING POINTS | WINTER 2018
REVOLUTION
BY PETER YOON, YOUTH PASTOR
In the month of December, our youth staff had an all-day
retreat to: pray, evaluate our current activity as a youth ministry,
and dream for a better reality.
We started the day with prayer. Prayer for ourselves, our
leaders, our students, our church, and our city. And as we
were asking God for wisdom, I felt a conviction to remember
the faces and names of those in our ministry. It was a
timely reminder of the implications, importance, and impact
that the decisions we make have on the lives of those in our
ministry. So even as I write this, know that I’m thinking of the
faces and names of our leaders, students, and their families.
On that day we began with an exercise that had us dreaming
about what kind of people we wanted our students to
be in 20 years. Who were they becoming? What were they
doing? And where were they headed? It described a preferred
future for the year 2037; and the type of people we
wanted coming out of our youth ministry. From there, we
worked backwards, asking what our youth ministry would
need to be doing 10 years from now (in 2027), in order to
ensure that our strategies were directly influenced by our
goals. Lastly, we began to have conversations about how
our 2018 priorities needed to reflect these values.
