cancer fight
WHAT LEGENDS: Liam Gallagher and Ringo Starr are among celebrities who have
• By Heidi Slade
GLOBAL MUSIC and sports
legends including Ringo Starr
and Liam Gallagher are helping
fundraise for a Sumner woman
with triple-negative, invasive
breast cancer.
Single mum of two Natasha
Lombart was diagnosed in
March and has been receiving
chemotherapy to treat her cancer
since April.
For the treatment to have the
highest chance of clearing all
tumour cells from Lombart’s
body, she needs immunotherapy,
a $100,000 treatment not
funded in New Zealand.
On its own, chemotherapy
has a 50 per cent chance of
eliminating the cancer cells.
But with the immunotherapy
treatment, that is boosted to
67 per cent. Immunotherapy
will also boost her three-year
survival rate to 87 per cent,
Lombart said.
“That’s a massive win.”
So, to raise enough
money for her treatment, an
England-based childhood
friend of Lombart’s used
work connections to engage
celebrities such as Gallagher
and Starr, and sports stars like
England football captain Harry
Kane and former American
boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.
Log burner may have caused fire
• By Heidi Slade
A LOG BURNER may have
ignited a fire that destroyed a
Birdlings Flat house.
The blaze engulfed the
entire house and has not been
deemed suspicious.
The Little River, Akaroa
and Lincoln volunteer fire
brigades were called to the
scene just after 7pm last
Monday and left about 10pm.
Little River chief fire officer
John Genefaas said he thinks
it could have been started
by a log burner. The
official cause has not been
determined yet but the blaze
started in the roof of the
property.
Genefaas said there was
“nothing left” of the house
after the fire had been put
out.
The occupant had left the
house before the fire was fully
involved to call 111 from her
neighbour’s house, Genefaas
said.
Crime watch group planned
• By Heidi Slade
A HEATHCOTE Valley
resident wants to start another
community patrol to curb the
suburb’s rising crime rate.
About 50 residents turned out
at a meeting with police, Fire
and Emergency New Zealand,
Neighbourhood Support and the
Christchurch
South
Community
Patrol last
week to
discuss
concerns
around safety
and security.
Jason
Marsden
It was
organised
after Jason
Marsden
took his concerns about crime to
the Heathcote Valley Residents
Association.
Marsden said he also raised
the idea of a community watch
to patrol Heathcote Valley.
“For me, personally,
the (Christchurch South
Community Patrol) have got a
massive area to cover,” he said.
The patrol area ranges
from the Halswell Quarry to
Ferrymead.
“People [at the meeting] were
interested in what to do to keep
their community safe.”
Marsden moved to the area
last year from the Faringdon
subdivision in Rolleston, where
he was involved in a community
watch group. He said the
watch was started after
building equipment was stolen
from a site in the subdivision.
The developer sponsored the
group and it was then able
to buy vests, torches, radios,
signage for their vehicles and
lights.
“The crime went down. It’s a
deterrent for criminals to move
on and shop somewhere else,”
Marsden said.
Watch members would call
police when they saw a crime
being committed or something
suspicious. Marsden said the
watch would also take notes
or record what was happening
if they could. “Basically, you
see something happening, you
report it,” he said.
To get the community watch
up and running, it would
need sponsorship to pay for
equipment.
The group would aim to form
a “very good” relationship with
police.
Marsden said the Rolleston
watch had cell phone numbers
for police so watch members
didn’t always have to call 111.
“They (police) responded
to our urgent calls within 15
minutes.”
But Sergeant Anna Partridge
encouraged residents to join the
established community patrol
instead.
“We would encourage people
to utilise (the) community
patrol,” she said.
Partridge said patrol
volunteers are trained
and log on when they start a
shift so police know where they
are.
She said if people joined the
existing community patrol it
would have a more effective
presence in the area.
But Marsden said the
community watch would only
operate in the Heathcote Valley
area, while community patrol
members cover the wider
Christchurch South area.
“The community watch,
for me, is a way of helping
out. It’s not spread out, you’ve
got less ground to cover,” he
said.
Fields picks up chlorine battle
• By Heidi Slade
THE BIRDLINGS Flat
community has put their faith in
Banks Peninsula city councillor
Tyrone Fields to stop the
chlorination of the water supply.
Chlorine was set to be put into
the Birdlings Flat supply this
week as part of a wider roll out to
chlorinate all of
the city’s water
supply zones.
Community
representative
Clive James
reached out to
Banks Peninsula
MP Tracey
Clive James
McLellan last
week to stop
the roll-out but did not get the
response they wanted.
McLellan told Bay Harbour
News operational decisions
around chlorine were made by
Taumata Arowai and “are rightly
made independently of the
Government”.
James said the Birdlings Flat
community now has to put its
trust in the city council and
Fields.
“We’ll shift our focus now back
to council,” James said.
“We’ve got to trust what
council is going.
“We’ve made our point well
and truly, and we’ll continue to.
But we have to trust them.”
The Birdlings Flat water
supply is currently managed
through a bore
head and UV
filtration system.
Emergency
chlorination has
been used for
short periods
of time when
Tyrone
Fields
contamination
has shown
up within the
supply.
“We do not want the chlorine
unless it’s absolutely necessary,”
James said.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
OPPOSITION: Birdlings Flat residents protest against the
chlorination of their water supply.
“I don’t mind chlorine when it
is needed, but when it’s not take
the bloody stuff out.”
Maintenance work is set to be
carried out on the bore head this
week. The supply would need to
be chlorinated for about two to
three months while the work is
carried out.
James said the next goal is to
see the chemical taken out of the
water supply once the work is
completed.
In the meantime, he is calling
on Fields to “fight” for Birdlings
Flat residents.
James and fellow resident Joy
Dixon met with Fields on Friday
‘Don’t just sit there
and roll over. Show
them your teeth’
– Clive James
to discuss a plan to stop the
chlorination. Fields
said the meeting was one of
many regular catch-ups with
James and Dixon.
“He’s (James’) angry, a lot of
the people there are angry. But
we need to be constructive about
the way we approach this,” Fields
said.
He said his next move would
be to find out what Taumata
Arowai needs to grant Birldings
Flat an exemption.
“I’m not in the business of
being a vigilante,” Fields said.
“It needs a council-wide
response.
“It’s about engaging with the
operator” and finding out “what
the pathway to exemption looks
like”.
James said the community will
wait and see what Fields and the
city council come back with.
“We’ll see what council
come back with and if there’s
any reasoning with Taumata
Arowai,” he said.
James’ message to Fields was:
“Don’t just sit there and roll over.
Show them your teeth.”
Mum ‘overwhelmed’ by support
• From page 1
Some of the celebrities donated
memorabilia: Starr donated a
drum head, Kane a signed shirt,
and Leonard a framed, signed
boxing glove.
Other donations include West
Ham footballer Declan Rice’s
signed shirt, Liverpool and
Chelsea football shirts signed
by players, and tickets to Harry
Styles, SZA, P!nk and Lana Del
Rey concerts.
The items were auctioned
online and some were included
in a raffle.
All of the proceeds went to
Lombart’s Chuffed fundraising
page, which had received more
than $77,000 as of Tuesday
morning.
Lombart said she was overwhelmed
by the level of support.
“It’s people that don’t even
know me,” she said.
“I wasn’t a massive Beatles fan,
but I grew up watching Thomas
the Tank.” The show was narrated
by Ringo Starr for its first two
years.
“(My son) got really excited
TEAM EFFORT: Natasha Lombart’s fundraiser received signed football shirts from West Ham captain Declan Rice and
England captain Harry Kane, which her son Max, 5, was especially excited about. Right – Lombart began chemotherapy
in April.
when I told him Harry Kane had
signed a football shirt for mummy,”
she said.
Lombart’s children, Mila and
Max, are four and five years old.
“(The cancer) has fully turned
everything upside down,” she
said.
Lombart said she was given a
special exemption to leave the
hospital to take Max to his first
day of school.
“You’ve always got to look on
all the blessings that are around.
On the bright side of things,” she
said.
“My children really need
Coastal Pathway road closures till mid July
THE FINAL stage of work on
the Coastal Pathway will see
a stretch of Main Rd closed to
traffic, five nights a week.
The pathway, which
will stretch 6.5km from
the Ferrymead Bridge to
Scarborough Beach, is almost
complete, with the last sections
in Moncks Bay now under
construction.
The narrow width of the road
means the section of Main Rd
between the pump station and
Shag Rock will have to be fully
closed from 12.30-5.30am,
Monday to Friday until July 14.
“Fulton Hogan is hard at work
now creating the cantilevered
path,” said city council
head of transport and waste
management Lynette Ellis.
“Unfortunately, due to the size
of the crane required to install
the precast
panels, we need
to close this
part of Main
Rd completely
to keep people
safe.”
The closed
section will
Lynette Ellis open for 10
minutes every
30 minutes past the hour,
starting from 1.30am. Systems
are in place to ensure emergency
vehicles are allowed through at
short notice. Bus services won’t
be affected by the closures.
Although crews will be
working on the section from
10pm-7am, one lane of traffic
will be open on Main Rd from
10pm–12.30am and 5.30–7am,
with manually controlled lights.
“We advise road users to plan
ahead and use the alternative
route through Lyttelton where
possible,” Ellis said.
“Once again, we thank the
community for their patience.
We’re trying to be as unobtrusive
as possible, by keeping the
closure to the small hours of the
morning to avoid disrupting
road users, but we apologise for
any inconvenience.”
The full coastal pathway is
expected to be complete in
early 2024 and will allow people
to enjoy walking, cycling,
scootering or skating safely offroad
along the coast.
Second boatshed goes up for sale
• By Nikki Preston
A SECOND Akaroa boatshed is
to be sold under the hammer just
months after a boatshed on the
opposite side of the bay netted
an impressive $255,000 in a hotly
contested auction.
The boatshed at the end of a
group of 11 on the waterfront on
Onawe Flat Rd in Duvauchelle
Bay will be sold at auction next
Thursday, and is one of just a few
boatsheds that come up for sale
on the open market.
The current owners, who
bought the property in 2008,
now live in Auckland and have
not been back to the boatshed for
10 years.
Bayleys listing
agent Chris
Mangels said the
boatshed needs
some maintenance,
including
upgrading the
Chris
Mangels
deck and ramp,
adding it gives
the new buyer the
opportunity to
stamp their mark on it.
The boatshed is well-lined, has
a basic bench and storage areas
plus water collection via the roof
– but the new owners will have
to go offsite for a bathroom or
even a bedroom.
The current owners used the
SUCCESS DURING the past
eight months could see Lyttelton
Port Company’s predator control
programme expand to cover two
more sites – if it can get some
help from the public.
The programme has been
running 40 traps across the
company’s Port Saddle and
Battery Point sites.
Environmental advisor
Charlotte Jones said it could
expand over Gollans Bay Quarry
and LPC’s land near Sumner Rd.
She said the programme uses a
variety of different traps.
AVAILABLE: The boatshed for sale is at the end of a row of 11 in Duvauchelle Bay.
property as a base for waterskiing
and socialising.
But Mangels said it would be
a “valuable tack-on” for buyers
who already have an existing
holiday home in the area.
“You’ve got the cool bach and
then the advantage of having
your bach stored away safely on
the waterfront.”
It is in a quieter location than
a similar-sized boatshed on
Seafield Rd on the opposite side
of Duvauchelle Bay that was
auctioned in March this year
and had better access from the
road, he said.
Being at the end of the row of
boatsheds also means you only
have one neighbour.
“On the north side of the deck
you’ve got an unobstructed view
down the harbour. You are not
looking at anybody else, it’s
pretty cool.”
Onawe Flat Rd is the road
leading to Onawe Peninsula,
which is a historically significant
Maori pā area and is “really
special”.
The Seafield Rd boatshed
created a huge buzz when it went
PHOTOS: NZ HERALD
to auction with eight people
battling it out for the unique
offering, which eventually sold
under the hammer for $255,000.
The sale surpassed the owner’s
expectations after selling for at
least $85,000 more than what they
had been prepared to accept.
Mangels said it is difficult
to put a price on the property,
especially when the Seafield
Rd boatshed was the first to be
offered for sale in a long time.
However, he said the vendors are
motivated to sell.
“There was a little bit of mystique
about it, and now the price
has been set it will be interesting
to see who is around.”
There are not many boatsheds
available in Akaroa and they are
seldomly available publicly, he
said. The Seafield Rd and Onawe
Flat boatsheds are the only ones
he knows of that have been for
sale this year and are in the only
two clusters of boatsheds in
Duvauchelle Bay.
Most are either sold to friends,
neighbours or sometimes sold
with properties.
– NZ Herald
Community help with predator control sought
Charlotte
Jones
“We’ve seen
quite interesting
results,” said
Jones.
She said 15
possums had been
trapped, mainly
at the Port Saddle
site.
“The primary
impact of possums around
Lyttelton Harbour is the damage
they do to vegetation. Across
New Zealand, they eat around
21,000 tonnes of vegetation every
night,” she said.
“In addition to browsing,
possums are known to predate
on birds and nests when the
opportunity arises, which could
impact the establishment of
native bird populations around
the harbour.”
A “surprising” number of
weasels have also been found,
between January and May.
“We have caught three weasels
since the trapping started.
Whilst this does not sound like
many, weasels are only found in
low densities in New Zealand
habitats and are the rarest of the
three mustelid species we have in
New Zealand.”
Jones said weasels are
“notorious predators” and
predate on prey much larger
than themselves.
“They predate on native birds
and lizards, impacting the ability
for populations to establish
around the harbour.
“Given there are lizard and
gecko populations on LPC land,
it is important that weasels
and the other mustelids are
controlled,” she said.
Jones said it would be hard to
predict how many more weasels
the programme might find, but
she is interested to see if seasonal
changes effect the trend.
But, to expand the
programme, LPC would need
the community’s help.
“The community involvement
would be at the Port Saddle
site as it is publicly accessible
and would involve volunteers
checking, clearing and rebaiting
traps.
“We are hoping to get this
under way in the next couple of
months,” Jones said.
By the community doing what
it can at more accessible sites like
Port Saddle, the LPC team could
shift focus to less accessible
areas.
“It’s important. There’s so
much work in this space being
done,” Jones said.
‘Battle of beaches’ club day chance
for Sumner to earn playoff spot
• By Jaime Cunningham
THE ‘BATTLE of the beaches’
is set to be a blockbuster clash
for Sumner, as the Wave look
to celebrate their club day on
Saturday by locking in a playoffs
spot with a win against New
Brighton.
Sumner go into the first of two
remaining round-robin matches
following a narrow 21-15 win
over Christchurch, where new
combinations were tested in the
backline.
The Wave sit seventh on the
standings with 25 points, and
a bonus-point win could see
the team leapfrog sixth-placed
New Brighton (29) and gain
momentum heading into the
playoffs.
The Sharks will play on Friday
night against the Sydenham
Saracens so they can be fully
involved on
Saturday’s club
day.
All 250
junior players
at Sumner
will play at
McCormacks
Bay on Saturday,
Matt Wood while the Storm
TARGET: Centre Ollie Lewis looks to offload as Sumner club day supporters watch on
last year.
PHOTO: ROZELLE MAY PHOTOGRAPHY
will also play there at 1pm. The
Tsunami will be the curtainraiser
before the Wave look to
win back the Fulton Shield,
which they lost to New Brighton
last year.
Club president Matt Wood is
hoping for the first Fulton Shield
victory in two years. In 2021, the
Wave won the silverware in the
last second.
“Hopefully we don’t leave it
to the last minute again but it
would be good to win it back,”
he said.
St Leonards Square will be full
of food trucks and marquees
for all junior teams after their
games, with the players set to
run out from the tunnel with
senior players for their games.
Said Wood: “And the Sumner
long-boarders will form a tunnel
for the players to run from, so
there’s a bit happening.”
The senior teams will be
looking to celebrate their club
day with wins across the board
before their DJ and date night.
The Super Rugby Pacific final
will also be televised at night.
The Last Lifeboat
by Hazel Gaynor
Liverpool 1940. Alice King stands on the deck of SS Carlisle, waiting to
escort a group of children to Canada as overseas evacuees. She is finally
doing her bit for the war.
In London, as the Blitz bombs rain down and the threat of German
invasion looms, Lily Nicholls anxiously counts the days for news of her
son and daughter’s safe arrival.
But when disaster strikes in the Atlantic, Alice and Lily – one at sea, the
other on land – will quickly become one another’s very best hope. The
events of one night, and the eight unimaginable days that follow, will
bind the two women together in unforgettable ways.
Inspired by a remarkable true story, The Last Lifeboat is a gripping and
triumphant tale of love, courage and hope against the odds.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
World sculling champion Billy Webb
THE ENTHUSIASM of
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
locals for competitive water
sports began as early as the May
1851 Regatta and is exemplified
in the life of William Charles
Webb, known as Billy.
Born in Ōhinehou Lyttelton
on January 21, 1880, his father
John Richard Webb served as
Mayor of Lyttelton 1913-1914.
Commitment to civic duty
appears to have run in the
family; Webb’s uncle, Samuel
Rollin Webb was Lyttelton
borough councillor and Mayor
for eight years in the late 1880s
and early 1900s.
Billy attended West
Lyttelton, Lyttelton Borough
and Christchurch Boys’ High
Schools, showing early promise
for his natural athleticism. He
excelled in running and cycling,
but his enthusiasm and focus was
soon taken over by rowing. At 5
foot 10 inches tall and weighing
just over 11 stone, he was a lean,
even wiry specimen.
Webb’s early training took
place on harbour waters with
the Lyttelton Rowing Club,
guided by champion oarsman
Dave Page. On December 16,
1896 with Alfred, one of his
three brothers, Billy won his
first regatta in a pair-oar race at
Akaroa.
At just 17-years-old Webb
moved to Wanganui, doubtless
drawn by its location near the
mighty river which would be
the location of many of his
achievements and also his
adopted home for the rest of his
long life.
Under the Union Boat Club, he
won four New Zealand amateur
championship titles, two for
single scull events and two
alongside Joe Green for doubles.
In 1906, having turned
professional, Webb took out
Australian Jim Stanbury over a
3km course on the Wanganui
River, winning a generous purse
of £200 and the title of New
Zealand sculling champion.
In August 1907, Webb
competed against then world
sculling champion, Australian
Charlie Towns, on the
Parramatta River in Sydney,
beating his rival by five boat
lengths. Despite a call by Towns
of an alleged foul by Webb, the
umpire’s ruling stood and Webb
took the title of world sculling
champion.
In February 1908 – the first
time a world championship
competition had been held
in New Zealand – Webb
successfully defended his
international title. His adversary
was a much bigger man,
Australian Richard (Dick)
Tresidder, but Webb successfully
trumped him by three lengths
in 20min 28sec over the 5.2km
course.
Webb’s international success
made him a very popular
figure in New Zealand, and his
subsequent races, especially
those held on the Wanganui
River, were attended by
thousands, many chanting
fervently for their favourite:
“Webb Webb Webb”!
In December 1908, against
this backdrop and another
formidable competitor, Dick
Arnst from South Canterbury,
Webb was not able to retain
his title, being beaten by 8-10
lengths. Webb challenged Arnst
in 1909 but was again defeated,
albeit this time by only 2-3 boat
lengths.
After a last professional race
win in September 1915 against
Paddy Hannan, the 36-year-old
Webb retired from professional
sport, though he continued
to take to the water until his
mid-70s. A humble and likeable
man who was generous with his
time in training and exhibition
events, his exemplary style
was regarded as the epitome of
sculling technique.
On October 2, 1960 Webb
died in Wanganui at the age
of 80. Posthumously, he was
inducted into the New Zealand
Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, in
recognition of his significant
contribution to rowing. A “Billy
Webb Challenge” takes place
annually; in 2016 it included
Olympic medallist Mahe
Drysdale, amongst others.
World champion
single scull, William
“Billy” Webb was
born in Lyttelton on
January 21, 1879.
Skoda SUV packs powerful punch
THERE OFTEN comes a point in
time when you know the mode of
transport at any given time isn’t fit
for purpose.
That happened to my wife and
I just recently as our old sedan
made way for a sport utility vehicle.
The latter providing us with the
entry and egress comfort we need
as our hips give way to old age,
notwithstanding modern engines
are far more fuel efficient than our
car that was designed over 20 years
ago.
Of course, being the petrolhead
I am, I would have liked to
have purchased something with
a bit more punch from under the
bonnet, but in terms of cost I had
to be realistic about that.
Had funds been available, we
may well have purchased a Skoda
Kodiaq – the RS version. It has
all of the comfort ingredients we
were looking for in an SUV, but
under the bonnet sits the 2-litre
turbocharged engine that has
found its way through a raft of
Skoda, Seat, Cupra and Volkswagen
product, notably the VW Golf GTi.
The Kodiaq RS isn’t quite as
gutsy as Volkswagen’s Tiguan R,
but it does have much the same
engine, albeit with lower power
outputs. Saying that, at 180kW and
370Nm the Kodiaq RS does have
48kW and 50Nm greater than the
2-litre TSi version I evaluated in
these columns in August.
The Kodiaq RS also benefits
from a recent facelift amongst the
six-variant series, it also gets a high
fitment package that extends to
satellite navigation, paddle-shifters,
panoramic sunroof, keyless
entry and ignition, electric seat
adjustment, seat heaters and a host
of other minor features.
Skoda’s marketing slogan is
‘simply clever,’ and over the years
I’ve mentioned many times the little
niceties that make the brand stand
out from others. In the Kodaiq RS
it was the plastic wheel trims that
sit inside the actual alloy wheel
itself, they can be removed to give
the vehicle a completely different
look. It’s the first time I’ve seen that
arrangement and, yes, it is clever.
Those features don’t come at5
a huge cost; sure, at $79,990 the
range-topping RS will stretch some
buyers’ budgets, but the entire
Kodiaq range is there to lure buyers
who want quality product at an
affordable price. The entry level
model lists at $48,990, while those
in the medium grades sit in the
$60,000 bracket.
Of course, all models have the
benefit of space, that is the way
it is with the modern SUV, and
the Kodiaq RS is no exception,
there’s even seven seats, although
the two rear seats that fold up out
of the cargo section are really just
for children or those very slight of
build.
CLEVER: The plastic wheel inserts can be removed to offer
a different look.
SKODA KODIAQ RS: High performance from Volkswagen Golf GTi engine.
As with all VW Group models
the Kodiaq RS is quality-built
and comfortable, there is space to
spread out in, and the remaining
seats are beautifully formed so that
fatigue on a long journey is kept to
a minimum.
I took the test car on a long
inland journey through to the
Malvern Hills and it felt just so
balanced and controlled on that
journey, the hills and bends were
simply swallowed up with ease.
A lot of that has to do with the
way the suspension has been set up.
Of course, drive is sent to all four
wheels which means there’s a fully
independent system underneath.
The spring and damper rates
are firmed slightly, but there is
compliance within that so occupant
comfort isn’t jeopardised.
It’s important to have balance
underneath when you have healthy
power outputs up front. The 2-litre
turbocharged engine is a feisty
unit and, as I’ve alluded to, it’s an
engine that has found its way into
hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
I’ve never found a car that hasn’t
thrilled me when fitted with the
GTi engine, and in the Kodaiq RS it
is another exciting product.
In terms of performance it will
accelerate to 100km/h from a
standstill in 6.6sec and will make
a highway overtake in 4.6sec
• Price – Skoda Kodiaq RS,
$79,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4699mm; width,
2087mm; height, 1685mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1984cc, 180kW, 370Nm,
seven-speed direct shift
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 6.6sec
• Fuel usage – 8.3l/100km
(80-120km/h). On my journey I
passed several slower vehicles and
delighted in the mid-range boost
on tap.
Drive is distributed through a
direct shift gearbox with seven
distinct ratios, by the sheer nature
of its design it is a quick-changing
gearbox that doesn’t put any
unnecessary load on the engine.
That being the case, all of the
horsepower can be utilised for
speed and acceleration when
required. Not only is the engine
a real dynamo, it is one of the
most pleasing in today’s market,
thrilling with its potential and
sound, the automatic downshift
blip reminiscent of a race car on
track.
All that it offers doesn’t come
at the cost of massive fuel usage,
Skoda rates the Kodiaq RS with an
8.3-litre per 100km/h combined
cycle average. During my long
journey the instantaneous figure
sat around 6l/100km at 100km/h
(engine speed 1750rpm) resulting
in a 9l/100km combined figure
when I took the car back to the
dealership.
I particularly enjoyed my time
with the Kodiaq RS, it’s a feisty,
fun SUV that offers a point of
difference in this age where
hybrids and electric vehicles are
commanding that part of the
market.
The Kodiaq RS stands up to
be counted with its honesty and
driveability, it has that fun factor
and serious capability both on-road
and off, although undulating offroad
excursions would be the best
bet. It’s not a serious cross-country
model, but it will take the family
into the high country lakes for that
summer fishing trip and/or the
winter ski field access road with
much ease.
Coincidentally, I dropped
the Kodiaq back and picked up
the Tiguan R two days later. Both
have incredible performance,
it’s just whether you want the
maximum this engine will deliver
or not.
