Wednesday June 21 2023 Bay Harbour News Fields picks up chlorine battle • By Heidi Slade THE BIRDLINGS Flat community has put their faith in Banks Peninsula city councillor Tyrone Fields to stop the chlorination of the water supply. Chlorine was set to be put into the Birdlings Flat supply this week as part of a wider roll out to chlorinate all of the city’s water supply zones. Community representative Clive James reached out to Banks Peninsula MP Tracey Clive James McLellan last week to stop the roll-out but did not get the response they wanted. McLellan told Bay Harbour News operational decisions around chlorine were made by Taumata Arowai and “are rightly made independently of the Government”. James said the Birdlings Flat community now has to put its trust in the city council and Fields. “We’ll shift our focus now back to council,” James said. “We’ve got to trust what council is going. “We’ve made our point well and truly, and we’ll continue to. But we have to trust them.” The Birdlings Flat water supply is currently managed through a bore head and UV filtration system. Emergency chlorination has been used for short periods of time when Tyrone Fields contamination has shown up within the supply. “We do not want the chlorine unless it’s absolutely necessary,” James said. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz OPPOSITION: Birdlings Flat residents protest against the chlorination of their water supply. “I don’t mind chlorine when it is needed, but when it’s not take the bloody stuff out.” Maintenance work is set to be carried out on the bore head this week. The supply would need to be chlorinated for about two to three months while the work is carried out. James said the next goal is to see the chemical taken out of the water supply once the work is completed. In the meantime, he is calling on Fields to “fight” for Birdlings Flat residents. James and fellow resident Joy Dixon met with Fields on Friday ‘Don’t just sit there and roll over. Show them your teeth’ – Clive James to discuss a plan to stop the chlorination. Fields said the meeting was one of many regular catch-ups with James and Dixon. “He’s (James’) angry, a lot of the people there are angry. But we need to be constructive about the way we approach this,” Fields said. He said his next move would be to find out what Taumata Arowai needs to grant Birldings Flat an exemption. “I’m not in the business of being a vigilante,” Fields said. “It needs a council-wide response. “It’s about engaging with the operator” and finding out “what the pathway to exemption looks like”. James said the community will wait and see what Fields and the city council come back with. “We’ll see what council come back with and if there’s any reasoning with Taumata Arowai,” he said. James’ message to Fields was: “Don’t just sit there and roll over. Show them your teeth.” NEWS 5 Club marks 150th with three-day celebration A THREE-DAY celebration of Lyttelton Club’s 150th jubilee will start on Friday. The festivities will begin with a welcome ceremony at the club at 6pm, followed by live music and a full buffet dinner. Saturday will feature a car show at 10am, a poker run tour to other Christchurch clubs and then music from 7pm. The poker run will see participants draw a playing card at each club.
