RANGI RURU Girls’ School
students are waiting with bated
breath to see if they have set a
new world record.
The students attempted the
world record on Friday, for the
most water transported by hand
over 1km, in aid of World Vision’s
40 Hour Challenge.
Led by the school’s head of
service, Bex Skinner (Year 13),
the school’s 700 students were
encouraged to take part in the
challenge.
It required each student to
walk 1km with a bucket of
water from the school pool, in
a bid to highlight the disparity
between the availability and
convenience of clean drinking
water in New Zealand to that in
many other countries.
Students were asked to seek
sponsorship for the challenge,
which has so far raised $7756 of
the $8000 target. Funds raised
will to go towards providing
fresh water access in Malawi,
where it is estimated the average
child walks 6km to collect fresh
water each day.
Said Skinner: “This water
bucket challenge is important
to me because it encourages
empathy towards others whose
daily lives are so different from
our own.” • Turn to page 5
Zhou woos Ryman residents
IT WAS A special homecoming
for one member of the United
States-based a cappella group,
the Harvard Krokodiloes,
when they performed at the
Christchurch Art Gallery.
Among the 12 tuxedo-clad
undergrads who performed to
Ryman residents and guests
over the weekend was former
Cobham Intermediate and
Burnside High student Alex
Zhou.
The Harvard Krokodiloes are
based at Harvard University
in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
where Zhou has made a successful
career with the singing
group, which performs without
instrumental accompaniment.
Zhou’s parents were in the
audience to cheer him on. The
former Burnside choir member
was happy to share his experiences
of life at Eliot House, one
of 12 residential houses for “upperclassmen”
at Harvard.
Zhou said the Kroks – as they
are commonly known – have
performed in front of luminaries
such as Julia Roberts and Bill
Clinton.
“Three years ago, we performed
at this country club
in Los Angeles and one of the
actors in Hunger Games was
there.”
Zhou admitted he only got into
a cappella because some friends
put him ‘unwittingly’ into a side
career as a singer.
“I definitely come from an
unconventional singing background.
I pretty much had no
exposure to singing all the way
until year 12, so my second to
last year of high school. Then my
friends as a joke signed me up
for auditions for the high school
choir.
“They didn’t tell me until 40
minutes before the audition.
I thought why not, I’ll give it
a shot. I went in and sang the
national anthem, and somehow
it worked out.”
He went on to perform with
the Burnside Choir at The Big
Sing in Wellington, a national
Zhou says during high school
he loved 1960s and 90s Britpop
– anything from The Beatles to
David Bowie and Oasis.
With a relatively limited
experience it was somewhat
nerve-racking to audition for the
Kroks at prestigious Harvard in
his first year.
“First week was a bit of a struggle
because you’re constantly
singing and each a cappella
group has three to four rounds of
auditions.”
But he loves the challenge and
comradeship. He’s returned the
favour by helping put up some
fellow students up at his parent’s
house in Yaldhurst.
“I’ve got eight of the Kroks
staying at my house so it’s a bit of
a squeeze,” he said on Monday.
After four years, including
‘dorm parties’ while living in
shared student halls on campus,
he’s graduated with an economics
degree from Harvard.
“That’s got some of the brightest
students from across the
world (though) I’m not sure I’m
part of that group but it’s really
cool talking to students who are
world leaders in math and the
The Krokodiloes have already
been to Ho Chi Minh City,
Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore,
Melbourne and Sydney. They
also performed to an audience
of Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village
residents. Their next sytops
are Queenstown, Auckland and
Bucket challenge attempts
world record for charity
• From page 1
Said Skinner: “Although
we can never compare our
experience to their everyday
lives, my hope is that students
will get to step into their shoes
for a small period of time and
have a better understanding of
the cause we are fundraising
towards as a school.”
In total, the students transported
3195 litres of water –
the equivalent of 12,780 cups
of tea – but will have to await
official notice to learn if they
have set a brand-new world
record.
Fellow Year 13 student and
head of chapel Nina Cantos
said: “The bucket challenge
helps us reflect on our
privilege of having access to
the basic necessities in life and
understand the value
in dedicating service for
others.”
Rangi Ruru’s head of
community and global
connections Tania Morgan
said it was important to instill
a sense of social responsibility
and a desire to give back
among young people.
“Our Rangi Ruru value
of manaakitanga (kindess,
support) is all about ākonga
(students) being good global
citizens and helping those less
fortunate than themselves,”
she said.
“Not only does this schoolwide
event help raise awareness
of World Vision’s focus
on raising money to help
bring fresh water to the most
vulnerable children in Malawi,
but it also encourages our
ākonga to do their little bit to
make a difference.”
World Vision aims to provide
clean water and sanitation
for everyone, everywhere the
organisation operates, by 2030.
Meticulous research
has led to a treasure
trove of sporting
history at Shirley
Boys’ High School.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
WHEN CARLOS Colville
made his debut for Shirley Boys’
High’s 1st XV in the opening
match of the season against
John McGlashan College, he
unknowingly made history for
the school.
Shortly after the match in
April, teacher Michael Skinner
discovered Colville was the
1000th player to take the field for
SBHS’s 1st XV.
Skinner started his research
after the trip to Oamaru to play
John McGlashan when current
coaches Kris Vine and Thomas
Houghton asked about the
history of the team. Skinner,
a teacher at SBHS since 2002,
admitted he didn’t know much
about it to start with.
“I coached the 1st XV years
ago, and help out now and then,”
he said.
“But I didn’t know much of the
history myself, so I started a bit
of research not only to educate
the boys but tell our history to
our community.”
What started as a spreadsheet
of results turned into a bigger
project for Skinner, who counted
up the total number of the
school’s 1st XV players and
found that Colville had became
the 1000th in the team’s first
game of the season.
“It was a bit of a shame we
missed that opportunity, but
we celebrated that at the start of
the Miles Toyota Premiership
season,” he said.
Even the school’s 17
staff members who played for
the 1st XV were wanting to
know their player numbers,
Skinner added.
The historical project has
now gotten larger than Skinner
featuring a number of old boys
such as current Crusaders Tom
Christie (below) and Brodie
McAlister, Black Ferns assistant
coach Tony Christie, and former
All Black Ryan Crotty.
“What I’m trying to do is to
make a 20 minute presentation
of the history with images and
clips of them,” he said.
“It’s something for next year
and the future.”
Although it’s still in the
works, Skinner has interviewed
several former players so far, and
believes their memories will be
integral to the school’s rugby
culture.
“I talked to James Daniels,
who was part of the 1972 team
and is a presenter for Newstalk
ZB.”
“I tried not to laugh at some of
his memories on camera because
they were so entertaining,” he
said.
Skinner has also interviewed
Steve Crotty, known as being the
father of All Black Ryan, but is
an old boy himself who coached
alongside Skinner in the mid
2000s.
“He got a bit of a tear to his
eye going back to the memory
of coaching his sons Ryan and
Luke,” Skinner said.
“It was obviously a real proud
moment with his wife and
daughter on the sidelines.”
The geography teacher
hopes to add to his project
with scanned photo
archives scattered around
the school’s new Travis Rd site
to educate students’ on their
local history.
SBHS continued their Miles
Toyota Premiership campaign
yesterday, going down to
defending champions Nelson
College 29-5.
Some of Michael Skinner’s
research into the past years of
SBHS rugby:
The inaugural Shirley 1st XV
team played 10 games against St
Bede’s College, Christ’s College,
Christchurch Boys’ High, Papanui
High and Cashmere High in 1959
just two years after the school was
founded.
It was noted in the school magazine
that the “team had a good year
despite the greater age and weight
of opposing teams” – as Shirley did
not having any 7th formers (year
13s) until 1961. The 1960 1st XV
was captained by Peter Drewery
(SBHS 1st XV #1) and coached by
John Mullins.
Eight years later, Shirley won
their first secondary schools 1st XV
Championship in 1968- captained
by Howard Anderson (#94).
In 1972, Shirley took out the title
as the top Christchurch school rugby
team for the second time. This
team featured Steve Scott (#172) at
second five-eight, who gained the
honour of being Shirley’s first All
Black representative.
Craig Green (#251) was a member
of the 1976-78 teams. He later
became the school’s second All
Black representative - a winger for
the 1987 rugby world cup winning
team, playing the final in front of
over 48,000 people.
The first golden era of Shirley
rugby is considered be from 1986
to 1989. The 1986 season saw the
team placed fourth while they
placed second in both 1987 and
1988. In 1989, Shirley gained the
Canterbury Rugby 1st XV title
for the third time in the school’s
history.
Former Crusaders Graeme Jack
(#407) and Matt Sexton (#403)
played through the 1986-1988
seasons, while Gary Stead (#423)
also featured in the 1988 and 1989
teams. Gary later gained recognition
as a Black Cap opening batsman
and head coach.
New look on life after Outward Bound
LAST MONTH, Josh Rae laced
up his boots and ventured to
Anakiwa in the Marlborough
Sounds to attend an Outward
Bound Youth Activate course,
an eight-day adapted course
for young people with physical
disabilities.
Josh is an active teenager who
lives with cerebral palsy and
attends Papanui High School.
He said being on the course
and away from the stresses of
everyday life in the city gave
him the opportunity for selfreflection.
“It was the perfect place to find
your inner peace – it was serene,
calm and quiet. I took time for
myself and as a result, now have
a different outlook on life,” Josh
said.
“Nowhere else but Outward
Bound can you get that
experience – you can’t do it at
home. I loved being outdoors,
away from commitments, school
and tech.”
Outward Bound has offered
adapted courses for the past four
decades. Over the past few years,
the adapted course programme
has expanded to include the
Activate course for people aged
18+ years, the Youth Activate
course for 16–18 year-olds and
the Activate Leaps and Bounds
for 13-15 year-olds, who attend
with a parent or caregiver.
“We believe that there is more
in everyone,” says Outward
Bound diversity and inclusion
partner Leonie King.
“By helping people understand
their full potential we can help
make our communities and the
world a better place.
“The feedback from our
activate courses is phenomenal.
“We see participants of all
ages and abilities growing in
confidence in their physical
capabilities and growing
their resilience and inter-
PROGRAMME: For
teenager Josh Rae, who
lives with celebral palsy,
Outward Bound provided
physical and mental
growth, with challenges
including a tree canopy
traverse.
personal skills.
“Outward Bound is as much
an inward journey as an outward
journey.”
While Josh is a keen kayaker
and footballer and many of the
physical aspects of the course
were doable for him, he found
traversing the tree canopy on
ropes challenging, overcoming
his fears with the help of
encouraging from his instructor.
The Mairehau resident also
made some personal discoveries
over the eight days he was away.
“I was really proud of myself
doing things that challenged me
physically, but I also discovered
that I am a better leader than I
ever thought I was.
“Usually I hang back when
I’m in a group situation, but
during the course when I was
told to lead, I did it and was
good. The skills I learned will
help with my role in the school
leadership team and also with
the volunteering I do for St John
Youth.”
King said Josh’s huria watch
(group) were “amazing young
people” who came together from
all corners of the country to form
a tight-knit watch.
“They departed Outward
Bound standing taller, feeling
prouder and armed with new,
strong friendships. From when
they arrived to when they left,
they showed a strengthened
belief that nothing can stop them
from doing anything they set
their minds to.”
Said Josh: “I would definitely
recommend anyone to go to
Outward Bound. It was different
to what I expected, but in a
good way.”

Burnside High School Athletes
Leaders in Learning
It has been a busy start to Term 2 for the Burnside High School athletes. Along with our traditional
winter sport programme getting underway, our gymnasts and cross country and road race runners
have been competing at a Regional and National level.
Road Race
On Monday 08
May, a team of 48
athletes competed
at the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’
Road Race, held
at Hagley Park. It
was a great day out
for all our athletes,
with strong
performances for
all. Ben Lough had
Road Race Team 2023
an excellent run
placing 3rd in the Year 9 Boys Race. Other top ten finishers were
Erica Lowe in the Under 16 Girls Race (10th) and Joy Chiles in
the Year 9 Girls Race. Our Year 9 Boys’ team (Ben Lough, Hosea
Wood, Charlie Brown and Lukas De Wit) came 2nd in the Year
9 Boys teams’ race. The Year 9 Girls’ team (Joy Chiles, Miriam
Lemon, India Pateman and Lilyann Lim) and Under 16 Boys’ team
(Oskar Koontz, Daniel Fullerton, Shannon Rochester and Olly
Upjohn) both placed 3rd in the teams racing.
Gymnastics
Elle Ilkiw
Continuing
Burnside High
Schools tradition
of excellence
in gym sports,
Lilyann Lim placed
5th in the Junior
International
Competition and
Elle Ilkiw placed
2nd in the Level
10 Competition
at the recent
NZ Secondary
Schools’ Rhythmic Gymnastic Championships held in Auckland.
Earlier in the year, Elle Ilkiw and Annabel Keith competed at
the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Rhythmic Gymnastics
Championships, here in Christchurch. Elle placed 3rd in the Level
10 competition and Annabel took out 1st place in the Level 8
competition.
Adam Lim was the only competitor in his group to compete
in all disciplines to cement his win in the Level 7 Mens Artistic
Gymnastic competition at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’
Artistic Championships, held at the Christchurch Gymnastics
Centre over the 27th and 28th of May.
Cross Country
Our cross country
runners have
competed at
the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’
Championships
and the Southern
Cross Country
Championships
with some excellent
results, and over
the weekend of
Saturday 17 and
Sunday 18 June we will have a group
of ten runners competing at the New
Zealand Secondary Schools Cross
Country Championships in Palmerston
North.
Ben Lough won the Year 9 Boys
race at the Southern Cross Country
Championship at Ashbury Park in Timaru,
Sunday 28 May. An excellent run from the
U16 Boys’ team (Olly Upjohn, Shannon
Rochester and Jake Boswell) and Senior
Boys’ team (Beck Faloon-Cavander, Daniel
Lough & James Anderson) resulted in a
3rd place for both teams in the teams races.
Unfortunately, the team that competed at the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’ Cross Country at Ascot Park on Thursday 01
June was affected by illness and injury, but still produced some
outstanding results. Ben Lough continued his top form with a
4th in the Year 9 Boys’ race. Ben also combined with Hosea Woo,
Corey Kennedy and
Barnaby Todd for a 3rd place in the Year 9 Boys’ teams event.
Mini E agile, effortless and exclusive
• By Bob Nettleton
ELECTRIFICATION adds
another chapter to the epic story
of British automotive icon, the
Mini – now with 64 years on the
clock and going stronger, cleaner
and greener than ever as a bona
fide electric vehicle.
It’s fitting that a variant destined
to power the Mini brand
well into the future is offered in
the company’s traditional threedoor
body style of the ground
breaking original, launched in
1959.
And, rather appropriately, it’s
built in the UK at the Mini factory
in Oxford, the birthplace of
this little legend.
The Mini E has a claimed
range of 233km. This means
out of town excursions demand
careful planning, so you always
know where the nearest fast
charger is. When you find a
50kW fast-charger you can boost
the battery to 80 per cent in 36
minutes.
The Mini Electric Hatch is
based on the distinctive design
of the three-door petrol powered
Cooper S and has distinctive
www.drivesouth.co.nz
exterior accents for a unique
first-ever Mini EV.
For a very small car, albeit a
lavishly appointed one, its sports
a very large $71,155 price sticker.
With a 32.6kWh latestgeneration
lithium-ion battery
on board, producing 135kW of
power and 270nm of torque,
these figures use their collective
heft to produce a quick-smart
0-100km/h acceleration time of
7.3 seconds.
Consistently smooth and
responsive power delivery make
for an enjoyable and fun car to
drive along with its ability to do
everything so effortlessly. This
is urban emission-free motoring
at its finest. A single speed
transmission does a fine job and
is an understated contributor to
making this such a impressive
vehicle.
On thing that strikes you when
stepping into the passenger compartment
is just how small it is.
There’s a reason why this hatch is
called a Mini? If you are used to
driving a larger vehicle, it takes a
while to adjust. It’s a comfortable
two-seater with enough room for
a couple of smaller types to shoe
Incorporating
best motorbuys
horn their way into the back seat
and park up for short trips.
All round visibility is good
for a relatively low-slung car, although
it can make entering and
leaving the vehicle a challenge,
if you aren’t as lithe and nimble
these days.
You’ll need to travel light and
pack clever, as the rear hatch is
tiny. Depositing a decent-size
soft overnight bag consumes
most of the available luggage real
estate.
This is one of the more lavishly
equipped cars in its class – and
so it should be with its hefty $70k
plus asking price. From whatever
angle you look at it, this is a
seriously large sum of money for
such a petite car.
Mini attempts to take some of
the sting out of the price with an
exhaustive list of standard features.
These include 17-inch alloy
wheels (pretty big boots for a
small car), Adaptive LED Headlights,
an exclusive Mini Electric
interior, leather sport seats with
the driver and front passenger
seats heated, head-up and digital
dash and head-up displays.
Electrification is one of the
CAR CITY
Opposite
Uprising
Climbing
best things to happen to the legendary
Mini. It sets up perfectly
to flourish in an automotive
world transitioning – and it’s
happening faster than you
think, from internal combustion
engines, to electric motors and
batteries.
While this is a defining moment
in the life of one of the
most recognised cars on our
roads, it retains the core values
of the brand, such as agile and
almost perfectly balanced handling
with terrier-like grip.
The steering is a Mini masterpiece
offering plenty of road
feel and a talent for obediently
placing the car where you want it
on the road, with both speed and
accuracy.
