Daniel’s big victory
• By Jaime Cunningham
ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College student Daniel Prescott
has stormed to victory at the
New Zealand secondary schools’
cross country championships
in Palmerston North over the
weekend.
Year 13 Prescott took out the
senior boys’ title in 19m 1.55secs
on Saturday.
Whanganui Collegiate
School’s Daniel Sinclair finished
second, almost five seconds
behind Prescott in 19m 6.17secs.
Prescott won the 6km race
ahead of 183 other competitors,
following his second placing at
the Canterbury championships
earlier this month.
It’s not the first time Prescott
has taken home national honours
for his school – he
won the Year 9 boys’ title in
2019.
He also finished second in the
senior boys’ 4km Canterbury
secondary schools’ road race in
May.
Canterbury champion Angus
Sevier from Cashmere High
finished fifth in a time of 19m
32.69secs.
Christchurch Girls’ High’s
Kate Currie was the fastest
Cantabrian in the senior girls’
race, finishing seventh in 14m
49.22secs.
Meanwhile, St Andrew’s
College student Sophie Lampe
won bronze in the Year 9
girls’ race in a time of 11m
32.39secs.
Christchurch Boys’ High team
also finished fifth in the overall
placings for a three-person team,
determined by combining the
placings of team members Luke
Johnston (18th), Josh Loose
(31st) and Will McMeeken
(50th).
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
students are waiting with bated
breath to see if they have set a
new world record.
The students attempted the
world record on Friday, for the
most water transported by hand
over 1km, in aid of World Vision’s
40 Hour Challenge.
Led by the school’s head of
service, Bex Skinner (Year 13),
the school’s 700 students were
encouraged to take part in the
challenge.
It required each student to
walk 1km with a bucket of
water from the school pool, in
a bid to highlight the disparity
between the availability and
convenience of clean drinking
water in New Zealand to that in
many other countries.
Students were asked to seek
sponsorship for the challenge,
which has so far raised $7756 of
the $8000 target. Funds raised
will to go towards providing
fresh water access in Malawi,
where it is estimated the average
child walks 6km to collect fresh
water each day.
Said Skinner: “This water
bucket challenge is important
to me because it encourages
empathy towards others whose
daily lives are so different from
our own.” • Turn to page 5
$25m road link under way
Improvements
to safety
and freight
WORK IS under way on the
Halswell Junction Rd extension.
The project will create a new
link from Halswell Junction Rd
at Foremans Rd to Waterloo
Rd to improve safety and the
freight network connections to
Waterloo Business Park and to
Pound Road.
Upgrades will include putting
in a new section of road from the
Halswell Junction and Foremans
Rd intersection to Waterloo
Rd over a new level crossing,
turning the existing road from
Foremans to Waterloo Rd into a
cul-de-sac.
It will also include
decommissioning the existing
level crossing, installing new
traffic signals with a pedestrian
and cycle crossing, construction
of a further section of the
South Express Major Cycleway
on Waterloo Rd, upgrading
watermains and street-scaping.
KiwiRail is constructing
all works on the railway
and constructing the new
level crossing as well as
decommissioning the existing
crossing.
Last month city councillors
approved extra funding for the
now $25 million project and
staff are continuing work to
reduce the risk of further cost
escalations.
“We know the local residents
and business are really keen to
see this work get underway so it’s
good to see Fulton Hogan on site
as soon as they are,” city council
transport planning and delivery
manager Jacob Bradbury says.
Traffic management was
installed on Monday with
detours clearly marked on
site while work on the major
upgrade continues from now
until the end 2024.
“Opening the new stretch
of road is dependent on the
KiwiRail work so we’ll be
putting out more information
about this once it has been
worked through,” Bradbury said.
A small section of the project
has been completed as part
of the South Express Major
New chair
for Hornby
residents’
association
• By Ella Craig
COMMUNITY advocate
Kim Moss has stepped in to
the role as chairperson and
spokesperson of the Greater
Hornby Residents’ Association.
It comes after the resignation
of Marc Peters this week, who
has served as association chair
for the past five years.
Said Duff: “I’ve worked closely
with Kim Moss, especially
alongside the fundraiser for the
hydrotherapy pool, I think she’ll
be great in her role.”
The pool will be part of the
new $39.9 million Matatiki
Hornby Centre.
Moss made an unsuccessful
bid for the city council last year,
finishing behind Mark Peters in
the Hornby Ward.
Wigram candidate walks the talk
Since being selected as the National Party candidate
for Wigram in March, Tracy Summerfield has been
busy getting to know the people and places in her
electorate.
She has knocked on the doors of over 3000
residents, visited over 250 local businesses, attended 37
community events, visited nine schools, and with her
small team of supporters, delivered over 30,000 fliers
across the Wigram electorate.
“I have also held Cafe Catchups and Pub Politics
events to make myself more accessible to people, and
to hear about the issues that are important to them.
“Not surprisingly, the cost-of-living crisis is on
everyone’s mind – juggling the household budget
between the increasing costs of groceries, buying
petrol, going to the doctors, and paying the rent or
mortgage with ever-increasing interest rates. These
increasingly unaffordable costs are the result of
Labour’s addiction to spending, which is driving up
inflation. National has the team with a plan to fix the
cost-of-living crisis, and the ability to deliver on it.
“Rising crime, particularly youth and retail crime,
is making people in the Wigram Electorate feel less
safe. Labour’s inaction to deal with crime has meant
businesses are paying the price. National has released
plans to combat serious youth offending and gang
crime and I’ll be talking to people in the electorate
about these plans over the coming months.
“I’m incredibly proud to be standing as National’s
candidate in Wigram,” she says. “My priority has been
to get to work straightaway listening to people about
the issues that matter and campaigning to elect a
National Government.
“Wigram deserves a strong local MP to deliver on
the issues that truly matter like addressing the costof-living
crisis, cracking down on the crime making
people feel unsafe in their homes, on our streets
and businesses, improving our local infrastructure
and creating better public services like health and
education.
“Wigram has been seriously under-represented in
Wellington, and I fully intend to change that.
If elected, I will be a proud and strong representative
for Wigram. No matter how big or small your concern,
I will listen and champion solutions through strong
and committed representation.”
Community involvement is also important to Tracy,
and she is an active member of the Wigram Lions and
enjoys fundraising for the Breast Cancer Foundation
and the SPCA.
Tracy grew up in in Hornby and attended Sockburn
Primary, Branston Intermediate and Hornby High
School, so has a deep connection with the area. Her
varied career has included chartered accountancy,
teaching, establishing three successful early childhood
services, and acting as finance and business adviser
I work hard and I know how to get things done and
I want to use those skills to deliver for our community.
If I earn the support of Wigram to be its MP, I’ll be
highly accessible, visible and focused on the issues that
matter to you.”
Tracy will be hosting a public meeting on law and
Mark Mitchell MP, National Party spokesperson for
Principal's
address
Nga mihi nui kia koutou katoa.
Welcome to the Hornby High School newsletter for June 2023.
Today takes us closer to the end of Term 2 which seems to have
gone faster than usual, and the temperatures are dropping rapidly
as winter rears its head.
I have had the opportunity to walk and talk with many students and
staff as my principalship at Hornby High School gets under way. We
have dedicated teachers, administrators
and support staff that enable the school
to run smoothly, and I was particularly
impressed when having a chat with a group
of Year 8 students and their enthusiasm
for learning. They have great relationships
with their teachers; this bodes well for their
future when our young people see their
school and teachers in a positive light.
Attendance
Hornby High School has high expectations
regarding student attendance. Studies
show a direct correlation between student
achievement and attendance rates. In the
simplest of terms, if you attend school you
Iain Murray
learn. At Hornby High School students must attend every class to
get the benefit of a quality and purposeful education. The school
follows the Ministry of Education attendance requirements, and
where a student chooses not to attend school for whatever reason
and attendance falls, they are choosing to reduce their ability to be
successful at school.
If you are struggling to have your child attend school, feel free to
make contact and talk this through with your child’s teacher or
Dean. The school office will pass on your details and your child's
teacher or Dean will make contact with you. Working together
and good school/parent/whānau communication enables better
outcomes for our young people.
A reminder to contact the school office if your child is to be absent
from school, a message can be left on the school's answer phone,
through the school app, or text the school absence phone on 022
Understanding How NCEA Requirements Are Changing
Key Information
Over the next few years, NCEA will transition from its current form
into a new qualification. Although this information is intended for
teachers, we encourage learners and whānau to use this guidance
as well.
In 2024: The new NCEA Level 1 achievement standards will be fully
implemented.
NCEA Level 1 will reduce in size from an 80-credit qualification to
become a new 60-credit qualification
The te reo matatini, pāngarau, literacy, and numeracy co-requisite,
which sits outside of the new NCEA qualification, will become
mandatory in 2024. Students will only be awarded NCEA Level
1 once they have met the 20-credit co-requisite of literacy, and
numeracy.
During 2024 and 2025, learners will be able to meet the 20-credit
Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite through achieving either the
new standards in Literacy-Writing, Literacy-Reading, Numeracy, Te
Reo Matatini, and Pāngarau or gaining 20 credits from a small list of
literacy- and numeracy-rich standards.
What stays the same?
• Unit Standards as well as Achievement Standards can be used
towards the 60-credit NCEA Level 1.
• Any credits learners already have can be used towards NCEA
Level 1.
• Level 2 and 3 NCEA will commence in 2025/26, for 2023 there
are no changes.
More information can be found here on the NCEA Website LINK if
you are interested.
Property
There are a number of property projects under way this year. These
include:
Heating upgrade to the Gymnasium, some additional security
camera and works on the Hall and performing arts area. The works
are funded by the Ministry of Education;
Our school roll is also growing, this means we will have built a new
(fourth) kāhui (classroom block), the design work for which is well
under way and the second version of the design plan should be
with us from the architects.
Students lift language skills
at university workshop
Senior Hornby High School
students had the opportunity
to advance and test their
Japanese language skills
earlier this month at the
University of Canterbury.
The nine students took part
in the university's annual
NCEA Japanese Workshop on
June 7 which was attended
by a record number of 600
secondary students from
Canterbury schools.
As well as developing their
proficiency in preparation
for NCEA assessments in
Japanese, a highlight of the
day was the Canterbury
Japanese Speech Competition
in which Hornby High School student
Lauren A (13 MlT) came second.
Lauren achieved second place in a very
strong field, with her very well written,
complex and well presented speech
in highly advanced Japanese about
the future of technology in the field of
education.
The students also participated in the
annual, inter-school Japanese dance
collaborative video, for which they
had been practising over the last few
months. This will be edited together
with those of the other participating
schools and released later this month.
Overall, it was a highly successful NCEA
workshop for our senior Japanese
students.
Teams try their best in contest
This year, the Calculator Competition
was held on Tuesday, May 30 at the
Aurora Centre at Burnside High School.
It’s a competition between teams of
four Year 11 students. We had the
opportunity to send two teams this
On Thursday, May 25, some of our Year 7 and 8
students visited the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple
in Riccarton, Christchurch.
The purpose of the trip was to take part in the
3G4G festival of cultural sharing and diversity. 3G4G
stands for 3 Good Deeds and 4 Givings to promote
wellbeing.
We are very grateful to the Temple for our
enlightening cultural experience. It was a fabulous
day! Thank you Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple
Christchurch for your continued support of Hornby
High School.
year which is really amazing. The
competitors used both the standard
scientific calculator and graphics
calculator.
There were four rounds with a set
time limit in the team competition
and a quick-fire mental
arithmetic quiz for
Lauren, left, with her certificate for coming second in
the Japanese speech competition, and the nine senior
students from Hornby who attended the workshop at
the university.
Hornby High School's two teams that took part in the Calculator Competition at Burnside High School last month.
Pupils take part
in 3G4G Festival
individual challenge
matches in which one
team member competed.
The students involved
were Hornby High School
Team A: Nolan, Risha,
Lhysette and Vanshika,
and Hornby High
School Team B: Kristoff,
Benjamin, Amirah and
Sereybuth.
Nolan and Kristoff brilliantly tried their
best to get some scores in the mental
arithmetic match. Unfortunately,
we didn’t take the trophy home but
the scores were very close and this
exhibits that our Year 11 groups are
very competitive.
Our young mathematicians also
displayed our school CARR values
that we must be very proud of. Their
commitment and resilience during
training times are absolutely an
excellent example to our entire school
community. For them, they compete
not for the trophy but to represent our
school with pride and to have fun with
other young mathematicians.
Bucket challenge attempts
world record for charity
• From page 1
Said Skinner: “Although
we can never compare our
experience to their everyday
lives, my hope is that students
will get to step into their shoes
for a small period of time and
have a better understanding of
the cause we are fundraising
towards as a school.”
In total, the students transported
3195 litres of water –
the equivalent of 12,780 cups
of tea – but will have to await
official notice to learn if they
have set a brand-new world
record.
Fellow Year 13 student and
head of chapel Nina Cantos
said: “The bucket challenge
helps us reflect on our
privilege of having access to
the basic necessities in life and
understand the value
in dedicating service for
others.”
Rangi Ruru’s head of
community and global
connections Tania Morgan
said it was important to instill
a sense of social responsibility
and a desire to give back
among young people.
“Our Rangi Ruru value
of manaakitanga (kindess,
support) is all about ākonga
(students) being good global
citizens and helping those less
fortunate than themselves,”
she said.
“Not only does this schoolwide
event help raise awareness
of World Vision’s focus
on raising money to help
bring fresh water to the most
vulnerable children in Malawi,
but it also encourages our
ākonga to do their little bit to
make a difference.”
World Vision aims to provide
clean water and sanitation
for everyone, everywhere the
organisation operates, by 2030.
New look on life after Outward Bound
LAST MONTH, Josh Rae laced
up his boots and ventured to
Anakiwa in the Marlborough
Sounds to attend an Outward
Bound Youth Activate course,
an eight-day adapted course
for young people with physical
disabilities.
Josh is an active teenager who
lives with cerebral palsy and
attends Papanui High School.
He said being on the course
and away from the stresses of
everyday life in the city gave
him the opportunity for selfreflection.
“It was the perfect place to find
your inner peace – it was serene,
calm and quiet. I took time for
myself and as a result, now have
a different outlook on life,” Josh
said.
“Nowhere else but Outward
Bound can you get that
experience – you can’t do it at
home. I loved being outdoors,
away from commitments, school
and tech.”
Outward Bound has offered
adapted courses for the past four
decades. Over the past few years,
the adapted course programme
has expanded to include the
Activate course for people aged
18+ years, the Youth Activate
course for 16–18 year-olds and
the Activate Leaps and Bounds
for 13-15 year-olds, who attend
with a parent or caregiver.
“We believe that there is more
in everyone,” says Outward
Bound diversity and inclusion
partner Leonie King.
“By helping people understand
their full potential we can help
make our communities and the
world a better place.
“The feedback from our
activate courses is phenomenal.
“We see participants of all
ages and abilities growing in
confidence in their physical
capabilities and growing
their resilience and inter-
PROGRAMME: For
teenager Josh Rae, who
lives with celebral palsy,
Outward Bound provided
physical and mental
growth, with challenges
including a tree canopy
traverse.
personal skills.
“Outward Bound is as much
an inward journey as an outward
journey.”
While Josh is a keen kayaker
and footballer and many of the
physical aspects of the course
were doable for him, he found
traversing the tree canopy on
ropes challenging, overcoming
his fears with the help of
encouraging from his instructor.
The Mairehau resident also
made some personal discoveries
over the eight days he was away.
“I was really proud of myself
doing things that challenged me
physically, but I also discovered
that I am a better leader than I
ever thought I was.
“Usually I hang back when
I’m in a group situation, but
during the course when I was
told to lead, I did it and was
good. The skills I learned will
help with my role in the school
leadership team and also with
the volunteering I do for St John
Youth.”
King said Josh’s huria watch
(group) were “amazing young
people” who came together from
all corners of the country to form
a tight-knit watch.
“They departed Outward
Bound standing taller, feeling
prouder and armed with new,
strong friendships. From when
they arrived to when they left,
they showed a strengthened
belief that nothing can stop them
from doing anything they set
their minds to.”
Said Josh: “I would definitely
recommend anyone to go to
Outward Bound. It was different
to what I expected, but in a
good way.”

Zhou woos Ryman residents
IT WAS A special homecoming
for one member of the United
States-based a cappella group,
the Harvard Krokodiloes,
when they performed at the
Christchurch Art Gallery.
Among the 12 tuxedo-clad
undergrads who performed to
Ryman residents and guests
over the weekend was former
Cobham Intermediate and
Burnside High student Alex
Zhou.
The Harvard Krokodiloes are
based at Harvard University
in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
where Zhou has made a successful
career with the singing
group, which performs without
instrumental accompaniment.
Zhou’s parents were in the
audience to cheer him on. The
former Burnside choir member
was happy to share his experiences
of life at Eliot House, one
of 12 residential houses for “upperclassmen”
at Harvard.
Zhou said the Kroks – as they
are commonly known – have
performed in front of luminaries
such as Julia Roberts and Bill
Clinton.
“Three years ago, we performed
at this country club
in Los Angeles and one of the
actors in Hunger Games was
there.”
Zhou admitted he only got into
a cappella because some friends
put him ‘unwittingly’ into a side
career as a singer.
“I definitely come from an
unconventional singing background.
I pretty much had no
exposure to singing all the way
until year 12, so my second to
last year of high school. Then my
friends as a joke signed me up
for auditions for the high school
choir.
“They didn’t tell me until 40
minutes before the audition.
I thought why not, I’ll give it
a shot. I went in and sang the
national anthem, and somehow
it worked out.”
He went on to perform with
the Burnside Choir at The Big
Sing in Wellington, a national
school choral music competition.
Zhou says during high school
he loved 1960s and 90s Britpop
– anything from The Beatles to
David Bowie and Oasis.
With a relatively limited
experience it was somewhat
nerve-racking to audition for the
Kroks at prestigious Harvard in
his first year.
“First week was a bit of a struggle
because you’re constantly
singing and each a cappella
group has three to four rounds of
auditions.”
But he loves the challenge and
comradeship. He’s returned the
favour by helping put up some
FUN
NIGHT:
and the
Krokodiloes
performed
in front
of Ryman
residents
and staff.
fellow students up at his parent’s
house in Yaldhurst.
“I’ve got eight of the Kroks
staying at my house so it’s a bit of
a squeeze,” he said on Monday.
After four years, including
‘dorm parties’ while living in
shared student halls on campus,
he’s graduated with an economics
degree from Harvard.
“That’s got some of the brightest
students from across the
world (though) I’m not sure I’m
part of that group but it’s really
cool talking to students who are
world leaders in math and the
like.
The Krokodiloes have already
been to Ho Chi Minh City,
Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore,
Melbourne and Sydney. They
also performed to an audience of
Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village
residents. Their next stops are
Queenstown, Auckland and
Wellington.
Plan to transform estuary edge
A $12.5 million redevelopment
is set to transform the Avon
Heathcote Estuary edge.
The new landscaping plan
released last week features a
3m-wide walking and cycling
track from South New Brighton
Park to the end of Southshore spit,
native planting, a nature play area,
and new ramps and jetties.
The plan aims to complement
the programme to reduce
coastal erosion and flooding
in Southshore and South New
Brighton.
Said city council red zone
manager David Little: “It’s taken
us longer than we’d like to get
to this point, but we now have
SUCCESS DURING the past
eight months could see Lyttelton
Port Company’s predator control
programme expand to cover two
more sites – if it can get some
help from the public.
The programme has been
running 40 traps across the
company’s Port Saddle and
Battery Point sites.
Environmental advisor
Charlotte Jones said it could
expand over Gollans Bay Quarry
and LPC’s land near Sumner Rd.
She said the programme uses a
variety of different traps.
a landscape plan we’d like to
share with the community to get
feedback on some of the things
we’ve proposed.”
The city council hopes to start
some work by March next year,
but most of it was not planned
until 2025.
Rock walls and cobble beaches
will also help to prevent erosion.
“It will mean the project is
not only an important piece of
infrastructure for the community,
but also an attractive area for
residents and visitors to enjoy,”
Little said.
“The project has experienced a
series of delays due to consenting
challenges. Ecological mapping of
Community help with predator control sought
Charlotte
Jones
“We’ve seen
quite interesting
results,” said
Jones.
She said 15
possums had been
trapped, mainly
at the Port Saddle
site.
“The primary
impact of possums around
Lyttelton Harbour is the damage
they do to vegetation. Across
New Zealand, they eat around
21,000 tonnes of vegetation every
night,” she said.
“In addition to browsing,
possums are known to predate
Southshore identified areas where
the design encroached upon
existing saltmarsh, sea meadow,
sea grass, as well as at-risk coastal
bird population, while in South
New Brighton Park middens
(archaeological sites) have been
identified close to the estuary
edge.
“We’re at a place now where this
has all been worked through and
we’ve mitigated risk to local flora
and fauna. We’re also retaining as
many significant trees and bushes
as possible,” he said.
•To view the plan and
provide feedback, visit
haveyoursay/show/597
on birds and nests when the
opportunity arises, which could
impact the establishment of
native bird populations around
the harbour.”
A “surprising” number of
weasels have also been found,
between January and May.
“We have caught three weasels
since the trapping started.
Whilst this does not sound like
many, weasels are only found in
low densities in New Zealand
habitats and are the rarest of the
three mustelid species we have in
New Zealand.”
Jones said weasels are
“notorious predators” and
predate on prey much larger
than themselves.
“They predate on native birds
and lizards, impacting the ability
for populations to establish
around the harbour.
“Given there are lizard and
gecko populations on LPC land,
it is important that weasels
and the other mustelids are
controlled,” she said.
Jones said it would be hard to
predict how many more weasels
the programme might find, but
she is interested to see if seasonal
changes effect the trend.
But, to expand the
programme, LPC would need
PHOTO:
NEWSLINE
the community’s help.
“The community involvement
would be at the Port Saddle
site as it is publicly accessible
and would involve volunteers
checking, clearing and rebaiting
traps.
“We are hoping to get this
under way in the next couple of
months,” Jones said.
By the community doing what
it can at more accessible sites like
Port Saddle, the LPC team could
shift focus to less accessible
areas.
“It’s important. There’s so
much work in this space being
done,” Jones said.
Burnside High School Athletes
Leaders in Learning
It has been a busy start to Term 2 for the Burnside High School athletes. Along with our traditional
winter sport programme getting underway, our gymnasts and cross country and road race runners
have been competing at a Regional and National level.
Road Race
On Monday 08
May, a team of 48
athletes competed
at the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’
Road Race, held
at Hagley Park. It
was a great day out
for all our athletes,
with strong
performances for
all. Ben Lough had
Road Race Team 2023
an excellent run
placing 3rd in the Year 9 Boys Race. Other top ten finishers were
Erica Lowe in the Under 16 Girls Race (10th) and Joy Chiles in
the Year 9 Girls Race. Our Year 9 Boys’ team (Ben Lough, Hosea
Wood, Charlie Brown and Lukas De Wit) came 2nd in the Year
9 Boys teams’ race. The Year 9 Girls’ team (Joy Chiles, Miriam
Lemon, India Pateman and Lilyann Lim) and Under 16 Boys’ team
(Oskar Koontz, Daniel Fullerton, Shannon Rochester and Olly
Upjohn) both placed 3rd in the teams racing.
Gymnastics
Elle Ilkiw
Continuing
Burnside High
Schools tradition
of excellence
in gym sports,
Lilyann Lim placed
5th in the Junior
International
Competition and
Elle Ilkiw placed
2nd in the Level
10 Competition
at the recent
NZ Secondary
Schools’ Rhythmic Gymnastic Championships held in Auckland.
Earlier in the year, Elle Ilkiw and Annabel Keith competed at
the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Rhythmic Gymnastics
Championships, here in Christchurch. Elle placed 3rd in the Level
10 competition and Annabel took out 1st place in the Level 8
competition.
Adam Lim was the only competitor in his group to compete
in all disciplines to cement his win in the Level 7 Mens Artistic
Gymnastic competition at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’
Artistic Championships, held at the Christchurch Gymnastics
Centre over the 27th and 28th of May.
Cross Country
Our cross country
runners have
competed at
the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’
Championships
and the Southern
Cross Country
Championships
with some excellent
results, and over
the weekend of
Saturday 17 and
Sunday 18 June we will have a group
of ten runners competing at the New
Zealand Secondary Schools Cross
Country Championships in Palmerston
North.
Ben Lough won the Year 9 Boys
race at the Southern Cross Country
Championship at Ashbury Park in Timaru,
Sunday 28 May. An excellent run from the
U16 Boys’ team (Olly Upjohn, Shannon
Rochester and Jake Boswell) and Senior
Boys’ team (Beck Faloon-Cavander, Daniel
Lough & James Anderson) resulted in a
3rd place for both teams in the teams races.
Unfortunately, the team that competed at the Canterbury
Secondary Schools’ Cross Country at Ascot Park on Thursday 01
June was affected by illness and injury, but still produced some
outstanding results. Ben Lough continued his top form with a
4th in the Year 9 Boys’ race. Ben also combined with Hosea Woo,
Corey Kennedy and
Barnaby Todd for a 3rd place in the Year 9 Boys’ teams event.
Mini E agile, effortless and exclusive
• By Bob Nettleton
ELECTRIFICATION adds
another chapter to the epic story
of British automotive icon, the
Mini – now with 64 years on the
clock and going stronger, cleaner
and greener than ever as a bona
fide electric vehicle.
It’s fitting that a variant destined
to power the Mini brand
well into the future is offered in
the company’s traditional threedoor
body style of the ground
breaking original, launched in
1959.
And, rather appropriately, it’s
built in the UK at the Mini factory
in Oxford, the birthplace of
this little legend.
The Mini E has a claimed
range of 233km. This means
out of town excursions demand
careful planning, so you always
know where the nearest fast
charger is. When you find a
50kW fast-charger you can boost
the battery to 80 per cent in 36
minutes.
The Mini Electric Hatch is
based on the distinctive design
of the three-door petrol powered
Cooper S and has distinctive
exterior accents for a unique
first-ever Mini EV.
For a very small car, albeit a
lavishly appointed one, its sports
a very large $71,155 price sticker.
With a 32.6kWh latestgeneration
lithium-ion battery
on board, producing 135kW of
power and 270nm of torque,
these figures use their collective
heft to produce a quick-smart
0-100km/h acceleration time of
7.3 seconds.
Consistently smooth and
responsive power delivery make
for an enjoyable and fun car to
drive along with its ability to do
everything so effortlessly. This
is urban emission-free motoring
at its finest. A single speed
transmission does a fine job and
is an understated contributor to
making this such a impressive
vehicle.
On thing that strikes you when
stepping into the passenger compartment
is just how small it is.
There’s a reason why this hatch is
called a Mini? If you are used to
driving a larger vehicle, it takes a
while to adjust. It’s a comfortable
two-seater with enough room for
a couple of smaller types to shoe
horn their way into the back seat
and park up for short trips.
All round visibility is good
for a relatively low-slung car, although
it can make entering and
leaving the vehicle a challenge,
if you aren’t as lithe and nimble
these days.
You’ll need to travel light and
pack clever, as the rear hatch is
tiny. Depositing a decent-size
soft overnight bag consumes
most of the available luggage real
estate.
This is one of the more lavishly
equipped cars in its class – and
so it should be with its hefty $70k
plus asking price. From whatever
angle you look at it, this is a
seriously large sum of money for
such a petite car.
Mini attempts to take some of
the sting out of the price with an
exhaustive list of standard features.
These include 17-inch alloy
wheels (pretty big boots for a
small car), Adaptive LED Headlights,
an exclusive Mini Electric
interior, leather sport seats with
the driver and front passenger
seats heated, head-up and digital
dash and head-up displays.
Electrification is one of the
need Finance?
best things to happen to the legendary
Mini. It sets up perfectly
to flourish in an automotive
world transitioning – and it’s
happening faster than you
think, from internal combustion
engines, to electric motors and
batteries.
While this is a defining moment
in the life of one of the
most recognised cars on our
roads, it retains the core values
of the brand, such as agile and
almost perfectly balanced handling
with terrier-like grip.
The steering is a Mini masterpiece
offering plenty of road
feel and a talent for obediently
placing the car where you want it
on the road, with both speed and
accuracy.
a hearing aid reaches your eardrum later than sound heard
directly; when these two ‘out of sync’ signals mix, you get an
artificial sound. This has been a problem for many years!
