Thursday June 22 2023 3 $25m road link under way Improvements to safety and freight WORK IS under way on the Halswell Junction Rd extension. The project will create a new link from Halswell Junction Rd at Foremans Rd to Waterloo Rd to improve safety and the freight network connections to Waterloo Business Park and to Pound Road. Upgrades will include putting in a new section of road from the Halswell Junction and Foremans Rd intersection to Waterloo Rd over a new level crossing, turning the existing road from Foremans to Waterloo Rd into a cul-de-sac. It will also include decommissioning the existing level crossing, installing new traffic signals with a pedestrian and cycle crossing, construction of a further section of the South Express Major Cycleway on Waterloo Rd, upgrading watermains and street-scaping. KiwiRail is constructing all works on the railway and constructing the new level crossing as well as decommissioning the existing crossing. Last month city councillors approved extra funding for the now $25 million project and IMPROVEMENTS: Work has started on the extension from Halswell Junction Rd at Foremans Rd to Waterloo Rd. PHOTO: NEWSLINE staff are continuing work to reduce the risk of further cost escalations. “We know the local residents and business are really keen to see this work get underway so it’s good to see Fulton Hogan on site as soon as they are,” city council transport planning and delivery manager Jacob Bradbury says. Traffic management was installed on Monday with detours clearly marked on site while work on the major upgrade continues from now until the end 2024. “Opening the new stretch of road is dependent on the KiwiRail work so we’ll be putting out more information about this once it has been worked through,” Bradbury said. A small section of the project has been completed as part of the South Express Major Cycleway on Waterloo Rd in 2022. Kim Moss Marc Peters New chair for Hornby residents’ association • By Ella Craig COMMUNITY advocate Kim Moss has stepped in to the role as chairperson and spokesperson of the Greater Hornby Residents’ Association. It comes after the resignation of Marc Peters this week, who has served as association chair for the past five years. Said Duff: “I’ve worked closely with Kim Moss, especially alongside the fundraiser for the hydrotherapy pool, I think she’ll be great in her role.” The pool will be part of the new $39.9 million Matatiki Hornby Centre. Moss made an unsuccessful bid for the city council last year, finishing behind Mark Peters in the Hornby Ward. Wigram candidate walks the talk Since being selected as the National Party candidate for Wigram in March, Tracy Summerfield has been busy getting to know the people and places in her electorate. She has knocked on the doors of over 3000 residents, visited over 250 local businesses, attended 37 community events, visited nine schools, and with her small team of supporters, delivered over 30,000 fliers across the Wigram electorate. “I have also held Cafe Catchups and Pub Politics events to make myself more accessible to people, and to hear about the issues that are important to them. “Not surprisingly, the cost-of-living crisis is on everyone’s mind – juggling the household budget between the increasing costs of groceries, buying petrol, going to the doctors, and paying the rent or mortgage with ever-increasing interest rates. These increasingly unaffordable costs are the result of Labour’s addiction to spending, which is driving up inflation. National has the team with a plan to fix the cost-of-living crisis, and the ability to deliver on it. “Rising crime, particularly youth and retail crime, is making people in the Wigram Electorate feel less safe. Labour’s inaction to deal with crime has meant businesses are paying the price. National has released plans to combat serious youth offending and gang crime and I’ll be talking to people in the electorate about these plans over the coming months. “I’m incredibly proud to be standing as National’s candidate in Wigram,” she says. “My priority has been to get to work straightaway listening to people about the issues that matter and campaigning to elect a National Government. “Wigram deserves a strong local MP to deliver on the issues that truly matter like addressing the costof-living crisis, cracking down on the crime making people feel unsafe in their homes, on our streets and businesses, improving our local infrastructure and creating better public services like health and education. “Wigram has been seriously under-represented in Wellington, and I fully intend to change that. If elected, I will be a proud and strong representative for Wigram. No matter how big or small your concern, I will listen and champion solutions through strong and committed representation.” Community involvement is also important to Tracy, and she is an active member of the Wigram Lions and enjoys fundraising for the Breast Cancer Foundation and the SPCA. Tracy grew up in in Hornby and attended Sockburn Primary, Branston Intermediate and Hornby High School, so has a deep connection with the area.
