A 64-YEAR-OLD will be in court 

today on a drink driving charge 

after he was pulled over by police 

attending a serious crash. 

Emergency services were called 

to the crash which seriously 

injured a motorist at the intersection 

of Trices and Longstaff Rds 

in Prebbleton about 6.30pm on 

Saturday. 

Power was cut to 478 customers 

in Prebbleton, Halswell, 

Ladbrooks and Lincoln because of 

the crash. 

While emergency services were 

working at the scene, the passing 

motorist failed to follow the traffic 

management instructions. 

Police pulled the vehicle over 

and the driver was charged with 

excess breath alcohol. A police 

spokesperson said the man was 

due in the Christchurch District 

Court today. 

Most properties had power 

restored within an hour of the 

crash, but some had to wait until 

3am while Orion contractors 

replaced the power pole.

DRAINAGE ISSUES have 

disrupted play at the district’s 

newest sports facility. 

Stage one of the $13 million 

Kakaha Park on Birchs Rd 

between Prebbleton and Lincoln 

was officially opened this month. 

The park has a range of 

features 

including 

sports fields, 

a dog park, 

playgrounds, 

and cycle 

tracks. 

But some 

users have 

criticised the 

park’s poor 

drainage. 

Prebbleton Football Club 

president Shannon Gilmore said 

the drainage issues had closed 

the fields on several occasions. 

“The ground has been closed a 

couple of times already. It’s a bit 

damper than most grounds,” he 

said. 

“They (the district council) 

have closed one senior ground, 

but the others are pretty damp.” 

Gilmore said one team asked 

to use a different pitch due to a 

large puddle in the middle of a 

field. 

District council major projects 

manager Phil Millar said the 

drainage issues at the park were 

first noticed last year and a longterm 

solution is being worked on 

for next season. 

“During the installation of the 

first stage of the park, we became 

aware that two of the soakage 

basins were not draining as 

designed and, over the past two 

months, we have also become 

aware that the playing fields have 

not been draining adequately, 

especially on the most eastern of

the three fields,” Millar said. 

He said the drainage system 

under the playing fields was 

designed to a higher level than 

most others in the district. It has 

drains every 7.5m, which funnel 

the water into one of the four 

soakage basins on the site. 

Millar said the drainage issues 

had been exaggerated by the 

higher than average groundwater 

levels in the area. The grass on 

the new playing fields will also 

take a couple of years to fully 

grow and the soil health will 

improve. 

The district council has asked 

an engineering consultancy firm 

to produce a report within the 

next month on the issues and 

recommend long-term solutions 

for the site. Stage two of the park, 

due to be completed in 2025-26, 

also includes 

playing fields. 

“We have 

used a number 

of temporary 

solutions, 

including 

pumping out 

the drains 

under the 

sports fields

previously pumping out the 

soakage basins,” Millar said. 

It has not been determined 

where the money to fix the 

drainage will come from or how 

much it will cost. 

Millar said this will depend on 

the results of engineering report. 

But Gilmore said apart from 

the drainage, he was very happy 

with the new park. 

“It’s a beautiful design in a 

great location. The changing 

sheds are premier level and the 

gear sheds are incredible. We’re 

certainly grateful to have the 

ground allocated to us.”

WET GROUNDS have stopped 

play on fields and closed golf 

courses. 

All weekend football was 

postponed across Canterbury 

by Mainland Football due to the 

condition of the fields. 

However, Selwyn United 

Football Club was able to use the 

artificial pitch at Foster Park 

in a makeshift old vs young 

match. 

“On a weekend where 

darkness, wet, and mud 

consumed the region’s pitches, 

the powers that be decided to 

cancel all community football. 

But one man, one coach, one 

club stalwart dared to challenge 

authority by asking ‘Can the lads 

play anyway?’,” the club said on 

Facebook. 

“The GM looked out the office 

window and, lo and behold, 

the club had an artificial pitch. 

Game on.” 

Lincoln and Tai Tapu golf 

courses were also closed due 

to the wet weather, with a 

week of rain leaving courses 

waterlogged.

Driver didn’t 

give off a 

‘good vibe’

side of the road. Police returned 

with photos, from which Nord 

identified the driver. 

Nord said due to the large 

amount of debris strewn across the 

road, it appeared the driver was 

travelling faster than the 50km/h 

speed limit. The out of control car 

went over the nearby mounted 

pedestrian island before it crashed. 


Hedge goes up in smoke 

Powerlines and an electrical 

fence are being considered as 

the cause of a 20x4m hedge 

fire on Days Rd. Lincoln 

and Rolleston volunteer fire 

brigades attended the fire 

around 1.15pm on Sunday. 

Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade 

deputy chief fire officer Tim 

Quinlivan said the damp 

weather helped them put 

out the fire, with crews on 

the scene for 90 minutes. 

Quinlivan said while the 

cause of the fire was yet to 

be determined, there were 

powerlines and an electrical 

fence nearby that may have 

contributed.

CHLORINATION will be the 

first issue for the new Darfield 

Residents Association to tackle. 

The association was formed 

after the community committees 

across the district had to be 

disbanded before Friday.

chlorine to be 

removed from 

the town’s water 

supply. 

Under the Water Services Act 

2021, all councils must provide 

residual disinfection (chlorine) 

for all public drinking water 

supplies, unless an exemption 

is granted by national drinking 

water regulator Taumata 

Arowai. 

Darfield is one of 10 towns 

across the district on temporary 

chlorination. 

“Some residents are going to 

the expense of installing filters

The district council is working 

with Rakaia Huts on their 

exemption application, which 

was initially declined in April. 

However, the district council intends 

to reapply once the issues 

for the failed application have 

been addressed. 

A district council representative 

will attend a public meeting 

held by the association next 

Thursday (July 6) at the Darfield 

Recreation Centre, to answer 

residents’ questions about chlorine. 

At the same meeting, the 

association will also be electing 

a chairperson with Polglase 

encouraging others to stand for 

the position.

Polglase said the committee 

was “quite excited” about the 

new opportunity it had been 

given. 

“It is important for Darfield 

to have a strong voice promoting 

our interests. The town is 

growing rapidly, but there is a 

risk our interests will be overwhelmed 

by those of the likes of 

Rolleston and West Melton.” 

Polglase, a member of the 

disestablished community 

committee, said under the new 

structure they will have more 

freedom, compared to the 

old district council-managed 

committee. 

“We felt while we were there 

we didn’t have much in the way 

of decision-making power.” 

Other than chlorine, there is 

also interest in pedestrian safety 

in the town. Polglase said they 

were open to ideas from the 

community.

place to seek help after a new 

youth hub was officially opened 

at the weekend. 

The Selwyn Integrated Youth 

Hub inside the Rolleston Community 

Centre 

will be a “onestop 

shop” for 

the district’s 

growing population 

of young 

people. 

Targeted programmes 

and 

non-judgemental, 

confidential 

youth services from qualified 

agencies will be available at the 

hub for people aged 12 -24. 

There will be a range of 

mental and physical health 

services, including medical and 

consultation rooms, and family 

planning advisers. 

One of the providers is 

Te Tahi Youth, which offers 

medical, sexual and mental 

health services. Te Tahi Youth 

was founded in Christchurch in 

1995 by Dame Sue Bagshaw and 

was originally called 298 Youth 

Health.

EVER WANTED to be mayor? 

A new video game being 

developed by the Selwyn Youth 

Council will give young people 

a chance to experience what it 

would be like. The youth council 

has revealed a demo of the Super 

Mayor game it has been working 

on with a developer. 

Youth council co-chair 

Mackenzie Wills said the game 

aims to give young people a better 

understanding of how the district 

council operates, its processes and 

the decisions it makes. 

“With the help of a council, we 

engaged a game designer to design 

a game that starts to teach these 

things in an interesting way that 

makes sense for young people,” 

Wills said. 

“We are still designing but the 

concept is more or less there.” 

Players start the game as a 

councillor and have to engage 

with members of the public who 

have an issue. 

“These issues can range from 

the playground hasn’t been fixed 

(to) a burst water pipe.” 

The players attend meetings, 

weigh up costs and make 

decisions with the “ultimate goal 

to become mayor”. A release date 

for the game has not been set.

up at our lifestyle property with 

photographs of it, taken from a 

helicopter, which I was not very 

happy about. It was, and maybe 

still, not illegal to use a helicopter 

for that purpose.

Flood protection 

Environment Canterbury 

chairman Peter Scott bemoans 

the reluctance of central 

government to support flood 

protection in Canterbury (Selwyn 

Times June 14). 

He correctly acknowledges 

the risk is from flooding along 

our river systems. The solution is 

simple. Encourage private operators 

to take gravel from the river 

beds for roading, industrial use 

etc, thus removing the requirement 

for expensive stopbanks, 

and the destruction of good 

farmland for unsightly, noisy 

quarries. 

However, the draconian rules 

that ECan impose regarding the 

taking of gravel discourages such 

sensible practice. If the constant 

build-up of gravel in the rivers 

of the Canterbury Plains was 

cleared to a depth of two metres 

over half their width, then the 

flooding risk would be virtually 

eliminated.

WAIKIRIKIRI Selwyn District is 

an amazing place of opportunity 

with diverse and strong communities. 

People want to live here 

and over the past 12 years our 

population has doubled. Keeping 

pace with that growth and 

the provision of infrastructure 

and public services is the job of 

a complex web, including the 

district council, our Canterbury 

Regional Council and central 

government. The current relationships 

and structures can be 

challenging and confusing while 

delivering variable outcomes. 

This current structure is not sustainable 

for our future. Last week 

an independent panel released 

the Future for Local Government 

Review, which seeks to address 

these and other issues holding local 

communities back. I welcome 

the report and its insistence that 

we require a matrix of change to 

see improvement. Communities 

deserve a stronger voice in the 

matters that affect them, and 

we must look to work together 

as a region to create the scale 

to simplify central government 

relationships and allow the development 

of decisions and funding 

for our region. 

The smallest district council 

in Canterbury serves about 4000 

people, while the largest city 

council serves almost 400,000,

all have the same responsibilities, 

accountabilities, and local community 

expectations to meet, but 

our current structure can be too 

big for meaningful local participation 

and too small for coherent 

large infrastructure planning. 

The review expects 

communities to work more 

collaboratively. I totally agree 

and through the Greater 

Christchurch Partnership, we 

are already taking steps with our 

neighbours. The trouble is with 

the backwards and forwards 

between councils, everything 

happens so slowly. A simplified 

regional or sub-regional 

decision-making body could 

streamline future infrastructure 

needs, provide long-term 

transport solutions and support 

co-ordinated climate change 

responses. 

We also need to shape 

ourselves to be more local than 

our current structure allows. 

Enhanced local community 

boards, perhaps each with a 

local mayor and real funding 

and decision-making powers 

with direct influence on 

regional matters would ensure 

we don’t repeat one-size-fitsall 

philosophies. How we get 

there needs community input 

to ensure the right outcome and 

that we don’t throw the baby out 

with the bath water. 

I also support the 

recommendation to use more 

participatory and deliberative 

democracy tools. This would 

support proactive planning 

rather than reactive spending. 

Local government collects 

less than 10 per cent of public 

money, with central government 

responsible for the other 90 per 

cent. This over centralisation 

is way out of kilter with the 

rest of the OECD and leaves 

us with an over reliance on 

people in Wellington making 

calls on our behalf. I support 

recommendations that allow a 

greater share of decisions and 

funding to be determined locally, 

including the government paying 

rates on their land and returning 

$1 billion to communities. 

So let’s crack on and get some 

of the panel’s recommendations 

implemented now – starting with 

a four-year electoral term. Some 

other recommendations require 

fine-tuning locally, particularly 

as we think about the future 

shape and governance of our 

region. Sadly, neither National 

or Labour have yet committed 

to implementing the review’s 

recommendations and will need 

to ‘buy in’ if we are to see the 

range of improvements envisaged 

by the report that require 

legislation to change. Until then, 

we start locally. I will work with 

our councillors, communities, 

and neighbouring districts to 

influence any changes so Selwyn 

continues to be a future-focused 

thriving place of opportunity.

Pointbreak Homes are 

continuing to innovate and 

are proud to introduce their 

“loft living” home concept 

to New Zealanders, simply 

called LOFT. 

Historically, with cheap land in plentiful supply, the 

obvious way for New Zealanders to build was single 

storey with space for a large outdoor area. All around the

The clever design and efficient use of space allows 

LOFT to provide a whopping 5 (yes, five!) bedrooms, 2

The ground floor provides open plan living, three

Retiring council chief’s safari adventure

DAVID WARD will soon be 

on safari, far away from the 

stresses of running the district 

council. 

Following his last day as chief 

executive on Friday, the 68-yearold 

and wife Vicki are heading 

off on a six-week trip to Dubai 

and Africa, which will include 

watching the great migration of 

millions of wildebeest and other 

animals from the Serengeti in 

Tanzania to Kenya. 

Ward said he will then settle 

into retirement in his hometown 

of Rolleston. 

“I have been in the workforce 

for over 51 years, it’s time to put 

the cue in the rack. I’m really 

proud of what I have achieved, 

but it’s time for someone else to 

have a go,” Ward said. 

As much as he is looking 

forward to not having to 

work, he said he would also miss 

it. 

“Absolutely I am going to 

miss it. That’s probably a good 

thing we are going away on 

holiday because I’m distancing 

myself straight away,” Ward 

said. 

He has been in the top job at 

the district council for 10 years. 

Ward arrived in the role after 

six years as chief executive at 

Horowhenua District Council 

on the west coast of the lower 

North Island. He listed some 

of the achievements which had 

made him proud during his 

tenure, including the district 

council’s investment in building 

the Selwyn Health Hub, Selwyn 

Sports Centre and Te Ara Ātea. 

He also cited doubling the size 

of Selwyn Aquatic Centre, the 

development of Foster Park, and 

the establishment of facilities 

around the district, such as the 

Tai Tapu, Dunsandel and West 

Melton community centres. 

“I love this job. I have 

loved being involved in 

local government, I have 

loved being part of an 

organisation that 

really does

“But you learn to 

cope with it.

privilege to be

about yourself 

and human 

nature along 

the way.”

‘You learn a lot from 

your mistakes’

One of Ward’s mantras was: 

“Before you accept tradition, at 

least take the time to challenge 

it.” 

He saw this on the wall of 

a building while travelling 

through Bali with his family 

about 20 years ago. It acted as 

a reminder not to get stuck in 

old ways as the people around 

you and the way they did things 

changed. 

Another was: “Don’t be afraid 

of making mistakes, because you 

learn a lot from your mistakes.” 

Ward admits he and his fellow 

managers made one of those 

mistakes themselves, when 

he was surprised by Selwyn’s 

exponential population growth. 

“We always knew it was 

happening, probably didn’t 

realise it would happen as much 

as it did,” he said. 

“I remember when we did our 

10-year plan, I think it was the 

2018 one, we took the view that 

growth would plateau in 2019 

and then start to take a slight 

downturn. 

“Basically we got that 100 per 

cent wrong. It’s gone the other 

way and a lot faster.” 

Statistics New Zealand 

projections indicate it will 

continue climb to 100,000 within 

six years. Selwyn’s population 

has already doubled from 42,000 

in 2013 when Ward joined the 

district council to 84,000 today. 

In the same timeframe, the 

number of district council staff 

has increased from 230 to about 

550. 

Ward said he will not miss 

the job’s long hours. He usually 

worked from 7.45am to 5.30- 

6pm on week days, which was 

generally followed by meetings 

at night and reading and “prepwork” 

on Sundays. 

When he gets home from his 

holiday, Ward said he will still 

have a lot to focus on. He plans 

to spend more time playing 

golf at the Weedons Country 

Club, and bring down his 18 

handicap. With wife Vicki, he 

will be following the harness 

racing horses they have shares

at Skyline Enterprises in 

Queenstown then worked 

for Sealord in Nelson before 

beginning his local body career 

in 1991 as corporate services 

manager at the Tasman District 

Council. He was there for 16 

years before taking up the chief 

executive role at Horowhenua. 

His successor, former Buller 

District Council and Clutha 

Health First chief executive 

Sharon Mason, will start her new 

role as chief executive on July 31.

Based on a true story, the play follows 

the journey of six members of the 

Women’s Institute who daringly shed their 

inhibitions, and their clothes, to create a 

tasteful nude calendar. Their audacious

sofa in the hospital’s visitors lounge where 

Annie’s husband John is receiving treatment 

for Leukaemia. 

This production serves as a reminder

the unwavering support found within

Dad leaves behind 

wife, two children 

after cancer battle 


A ROLLESTON father of two 

has lost his battle with stage four 

bowel cancer. 

Dan Morbey died last Tuesday. 

“Dan passed away at 2.51pm, 

one day after his 37th birthday,” 

partner Sarah Noble said. 

“He will forever be in my heart 

and live on in his two amazing 

children – the greatest gift he 

could have ever given me.” 

Originally from Birmingham 

in England, Morbey met Sarah 

when she was on her OE and 

decided to follow her back to 

New Zealand in 2017. 

They moved around the 

country and eventually settled in 

Rolleston at the end of 2021. 

When he was diagnosed 

in December, the family was 

told his cancer was incurable. 

Surgery, chemotherapy and 

radiation were not an option 

because of how far the cancer 

had spread. 

In March, they were told 

Morbey had three to six months 

left to live. 

The family has been raising 

funds for palliative treatment 

through a Givealittle page. So 

far it has raised almost $85,000,

Morbey. Sarah said the rest of 

the money would be used to

solo mum of two under-5s.”

Semi-finals just a win away 

for Waihora and Prebbleton

Waihora and Prebbleton 

are likely to secure semi-final 

spots on Saturday. 

They face bottom of the 

table Hornby and Springston 

respectively, who are yet to beat 

an Ellesmere side this season. 

It would be a major upset if 

Waihora or Prebbleton were to 

lose. 

Both teams came away with 

hard-fought wins in muddy 

conditions at the weekend, 

putting them at the top of the 

table on 19 points each with 

three round robin games to go. 

Despite a challenging first half 

against Lincoln- 

Rolleston, 

Waihora pulled 

away to a bonuspoint 

48-21 win.

reflect how close

Bronze medal caps off 

stellar games for Bella 

BELLA LAMMERS is the 

toast of the Selwyn swimming 

community after claiming a 

bronze medal at the Special 

Olympics World Summer 

Games in Berlin. 

The games are the largest 

inclusive sporting event in the 

world with 7000 athletes from 

190 countries competing in 26 

sports. 

The 21-year-old from 

Rolleston finished third last 

week as part of the New Zealand 

team in the 4x25m relay at 

the Schwimm-und-Sprung 

Halle Europapark, the largest 

swimming complex in Europe. 

In the relay, New Zealand 

coach Carla L’Huillier opted 

to put Lammers as the first 

swimmer, while most nations 

opted for their strongest 

swimmer. The rest of the Kiwi 

team completed a challenging 

catch-up race to claim bronze 

behind Slovenia and Belgium. 

“I am so proud of my medal,” 

said Lammers who was 

beaming from ear to ear with 

her teammates Haven Drinnan 

(North Canterbury), Matthew 

Smith (Te Awamutu) and Jesse 

Williams (Manawatu). 

Lammers narrowly missed 

out on a second medal by a split 

second in the 25m freestyle 

final and on the final day of 

competition finished fifth in the 

25m backstroke. 

She was the victim of her 

own success in the backstroke, 

beating her personal best by two 

seconds so she was promoted to 

the fastest final. 

In the final, Lammers again 

got close to her best time, but 

had to settle for fifth. 

She had a huge support 

crew who travelled from New 

Zealand, the Netherlands and 

England. 

She fully embraced her new 

fame. 

“I am so famous. I have been 

on TV, so all my dreams have 

come true.” 

She also enjoyed the 

unforgettable opening and 

closing ceremonies under the 

famous Brandenburg Gate. 

Lammers returned to Selwyn on 

Friday.

Although Malvern trailed 34- 

30 at the end of the third quarter, 

it was a strong finish that saw the 

newly-promoted team almost 

gain their first win in premier 1. 

While Malvern will have the 

tough challenge of backing 

up their performance against

the unbeaten Burnham A tomorrow. 

Another slick second half saw 

Burnham add to their winning 

streak, beating Greenpark B 

38-24. 

Burnham moved up a gear after 

halftime, turning a three-goal 

lead into 14. 

However, it was a low-scoring 

game for both teams. Greenpark 

B were unable to net more than 

seven goals each quarter, 

which ultimately cost them the 

game. 

Greenpark B will look to 

bounce back from the loss with 

a victory over the winless Broadfield 

A tomorrow.

West Melton held onto a small 

lead consistently throughout the 

game, winning 33-30. A lack of

Mānawatia a Matariki! 

Celebrating to the stars 

Ko Matariki kei runga, ko te tohu tēnā o te tau hou! 

When Matariki rises, that is the sign of the new year. 

A celebration of trees, forest, food and music will be at the heart of this year’s 

events marking Matariki. 

Each year, Selwyn District Council focuses its celebrations on one of the nine stars 

in Matariki. This year we celebrate Tupuārangi who is connected with everything 

that grows up in our trees and forests such as birds, berries, and other fruits of 

the forest. 

The gathering and preservation of these resources helped sustain Māori through 

the cold winter months — and a series of warm fun events are planned to help us 

mark the this time of celebration and renewal. 

Starting on Saturday 8 July with a kete weaving workshop with members of 

Te Kāhui Hono, a collective of Selwyn and Ōtautahi weavers preserving traditional 

craft skills, the event series will take in a sing along for kids with the popular 

Loopy Tunes music duo and lessons on native plant propagation and bird watching 

through to a series of community garden open days. 

A special Dinners of Selwyn will combine marking Matariki with the many different 

cultures and backgrounds of our more recent settlers in Waikirikiri Selwyn with 

guests bringing a dish to share, but also being invited to share their favourite recipe 

featuring fruit and/or berries. 

Playing games is also a big part of Matariki, so bring a family game to enjoy 

with everyone.

Dog registration starts Saturday 

More than 17,000 dogs in Selwyn are set to become official for the 2023/24 year, as 

the annual dog registration month gets underway in July. 

Owners will need to renew their registration with the Council, with all dogs aged 

three months and over required to be registered before 1 August. 

Council’s Head of Regulatory Susan Atherton says owners who register their dogs on 

time will be eligible for a discount. 

“Selwyn really loves its pets, and that’s evident in the number of dogs living in the 

district. There are 17,467 dogs on our records to be re-registered so we’re expecting a 

very busy month.” 

“Registering on time is quick and easy to do online, by internet bank transfer, or 

in person at a Council service centre. If you register before 31 July, you’ll get a 

discounted fee of $45, instead of $60.” 

Registration fees help to pay for the Council’s range of dog control services and 

facilities, including maintaining the district’s four fenced dog parks, delivering dog 

safety education programmes, running microchipping clinics, and operating the dog 

control service that responds to lost or wandering dogs. 

Registration renewal forms were sent to owners in June. Anyone whose dog has not 

been previously registered with Selwyn District Council can download a new dog 

registration form from the Council website. 

Thanks to the metal lifetime One Tags that were introduced in 2021, owners won’t 

be issued a new tag for their canine and can keep the one they already have. 

Replacement tags can be re-issued for $5 if they are damaged or lost.

Crowds celebrate Youth Hub opening 

A live DJ, fades and braids and even a talking car were part of a fun afternoon 

celebrating the opening of the new Selwyn Youth Hub. 

A steady crowd of visitors enjoyed the afternoon of celebrations with KITT 

the Knight Rider car, food and drink activities and competitions, welcoming 

the official opening of the hub, based in the Rolleston Community Centre. 

Representatives from the wide range of service providers and Selwyn’s four 

high schools also attended. 

The Youth Hub is a collaboration, bringing together youth services and 

organisations from around the community, including The Collective Trust, 

Youth Town, Family Planning and Te Tahi Youth to deliver services and 

programmes dedicated to young people aged 12 to 24 years old. 

The hub idea and the services provided were based on needs identified by 

Selwyn young people and by the principals at the four Selwyn high schools 

and are designed to help young people grow, thrive and feel connected in the 

Selwyn community. 

Services will range from health services, counselling, career advice, education, 

and training, through to events, activities and courses parenting and youth 

courses, learner driver courses, drug and alcohol counselling sessions, arts 

classes, te reo Māori classes and waiata sessions. 

Fund marks milestone in making a 

difference in Darfield 

Over a million dollars of support is helping community groups in Darfield to 

make a positive difference to the township. 

The Westview Special Fund Committee was formed in late 2019, to 

distribute a fund of $1.27m from the sale of land in Darfield, back to the 

Darfield community. 

Ten community projects received over $260,000 in funding from the 

final funding round of the Westview Special Fund. 

Across the five rounds, the committee awarded funds to 51 

successful applications. 

The fifth-round saw funding for gymnastics and basketball classes, cricket 

pitch covers and the Darfield High School Youth Enterprise award, and 

playground and building upgrades for the Darfield Preschool and Nursery, 

Darfield Primary School, Darfield Bowling Club, Darfield Rugby Club and 

Darfield Netball Club. 

Funding also went to the Darfield Toy Library to build up the service following 

the withdrawal of Plunket involvement due to impacts from COVID. 

Secretary Kerri Gray says the Toy Library has been part of the community for 

over 26 years and the funding will make a huge difference to improving its 

services to the community. 

“When significant change occurs, it can take a while to grow back and this 

funding gives us such an incredible opportunity to fast forward this effort and 

support families in Darfield in a more meaningful way. We can be back out at 

events, improve our presence and be more connected. We’re hoping to hire a 

toy librarian as part of this grant so we can provide a stable figure for young 

families who may be more disconnected than those in larger towns. We want 

to save families money, reduce the plastic they buy and give a familiar face to 

members who can just chat and check in. This is really ground-breaking for 

us and we can’t wait to build a bigger, more connected presence in Darfield.” 

Westview Special Fund Chairman Bob Mugford thanked all the applicants 

over the years of the fund. 

“It’s been a really worthwhile project to be a part of, to be able to support so 

many excellent community groups and dedicated people who play such an 

important part in our community.” 

If any funds remain, once the final amounts have been dispensed to the 

applicants, these funds will be transferred to the Malvern Community Board 

to distribute for community capital projects within Darfield.

Selwyn’s ranks for new Kiwi have grown again with new citizens from eight different countries 

welcomed at the latest citizenship ceremony. 

A group of 38 people from Croatia to Nepal, Germany to India became Kiwi at the ceremony at 

Te Ara Ātea. 

Te Taumutu Rūnanga chairperson Liz Brown welcomed 

the new citizens, noting the word for citizen in te reo 

Māori is kirirarau — meaning the skin, or person, that 

settles and welcoming the new citizens to the place they 

have settled. 

She also noted the upcoming time of Matariki, and 

reminded the new citizens and their supporters that 

Matariki is also a time of remembrance, to remember 

those that have gone before. 

Burnham Military Camp Commandant Major Julie Richardson also welcomed the group, along with 

Mayor Sam Broughton, who encouraged the new citizens to share the celebrations and traditions 

of where they have travelled from with their friends and neighbours. 

“We’re a stronger, richer place for what you bring to Selwyn.” 

Maintenance is being done on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge 

with night works on Thursday (29 June). The bridge will be 

closed for up to two hours at a time from 8pm–6am, reopening 

to let traffic through at 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am. This work 

is weather dependent. Updates will be post on the Council 

Facebook page if this is delayed.

We’re looking for passionate Selwyn people to help their local community during an emergency,

Motukarara, Springston and Windwhistle areas. 

The role of a CRT is to check on the most vulnerable people, gather information about what 

has happened/is happening, and open a drop-in Emergency Centre if required. Volunteers are a 

friendly face to the public, treating people with compassion and respect in emergency situations.

Selwyn Schools hungry for 

victory after hard-fought losses 


AFTER A heartbreaking loss in 

mudbath conditions on Friday, 

Selwyn Schools’ have little time 

to ponder before taking on 

Marlborough Boys’ College in 

a much-anticipated clash this 

weekend. 

The eighth-placed team host 

Marlborough Boys’ at Lincoln 

High on Saturday (11am), who 

sit seventh following a 36-22 loss 

against St Bede’s College. 

Selwyn will be hungry for 

a win after their 24-19 loss 

to third-placed St Thomas of 

Canterbury College in round 6. 

The combined team were 

the first to score in the rain 

against third-placed St Thomas’, 

and led for majority of the first 

half. 

However, a hard-fought second 

half, backed by a large number of 

St Thomas’ supporters, saw the 

home team get in front of Selwyn 

and hold their lead to the final 

whistle. 

Selwyn are yet to back up their 

first round 31-24 win over St 

Andrew’s College on May 13, 

but have had some nailbiting

Understanding 

hyperthyroidism in cats 

What is hyperthyroidism? 

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, 

located in the neck, produces a hormone called thyroxine 

(T4) in excessive amounts. Thyroxine is involved in 

many physiological processes in the 

body particularly related to metabolism. 

Hyperthyroidism is very common 

in older cats. The cause is currently 

unknown and in most cases is related to 

a benign swelling, although in rare cases 

can be linked to a tumour of the thyroid. 

What are the symptoms? 

• Weight loss 

• Ravenous appetite (but in some cases 

it can be normal or reduced) 

• Reduced coat quality 

• Increased thirst and urination 

• Vomiting or diarrhoea (can be 

intermittent) 

• Hyperactive, unsettled, nervous, 

vocal or irritable 

How do you test for it? 

Usually, a simple blood test to check 

the levels of thyroxine in the blood is 

sufficient for diagnosis. Although some 

cases require additional tests. 

How is it treated? 

There are four main treatment options, 

each with their own pros and cons and 

differing costs: 

1. Lifelong medication: Available as oral tablets or 

a gel applied to the ear daily. This aims to reduce the 

thyroxine levels down to normal range. Regular blood 

tests are needed initially, and throughout life to monitor 

levels. 

2. Radioactive Iodine: Cats are required to stay at a 

treatment centre for between 7-10 days for treatment 

with a radioactive chemical which attacks the overactive 

thyroid only. The aim of this method is to cure 

hyperthyroidism and prevent the need 

for medication in future. In rare cases, a 

second round of treatment is required. 

3. Prescription diet: Lifelong diet. No 

additional food – treats or hunting – or 

the diet will not work adequately. 

4. Thyroidectomy: Surgical removal of 

the affected thyroid gland. Less common 

given the possible risks or damage to the 

parathyroid gland.

Navigating sunstrike 

during peak in winter 

SUNSTRIKE IS a blinding glare that can 

be incredibly dangerous for motorists 

during winter months in Aotearoa. It is 

important to plan ahead, stay alert, slow 

down, and drop back. 

It can happen at any time of the day 

but is most likely during the morning or 

the afternoon, when the sun’s rays can hit 

your windscreen at a low angle, making it 

difficult – or even impossible – to see. 

One way to help combat this and 

improve visibility is keeping the inside 

and outside of your windscreen clean, 

as excess dust or grime can increase the 

effects of sunstrike. 

Try keeping a clean waffle-weave 

microfibre cloth handy to wipe the inside 

of your windscreen. The waffle-weave 

texture helps prevent streakiness. You 

can also use your sun visor to help reduce 

glare. 

Before heading out, check you have 

filled up your water and window washer 

fluid levels. 

If possible, keep a spare pair of 

polarised sunglasses in your car to wear 

to minimise the amount of sun in your 

eyes. 

When you can’t see at intersections due 

to sunstrike, look outside your windows 

and proceed extremely slowly until the 

sunstrike clears. Don’t presume the way 

is clear. As always, if you are struggling 

to see or don’t feel comfortable driving 

in the conditions, pull over safely and 

wait a few minutes to see if the conditions 

improve or the sun moves into a different 

position. 

It is also important to pay attention 

to who else is on the road, including 

cyclists and pedestrians, who may also 

experience sunstrike and not see vehicles 

approaching. 

Increasing your following distance 

to give yourself more time to react if 

anything goes wrong, and reducing 

speed, can help ensure everyone using the 

road gets home safely.

CANTERBURY RUGBY’S Keep it 

Positive message will be front and centre 

in junior rugby this season. Over 400 

yellow bibs with a simple ‘Keep it Positive’ 

message will be distributed to community 

rugby clubs throughout the region. 

The idea, backed by Canterbury Rugby’s 

principal partner Ray White, is that those 

who help facilitate our junior game will 

stand together to stamp out poor sideline 

behaviour, wearing a common bib rather 

than their club colours, whilst delivering 

a positive reminder we’re all there for kids 

to have fun. 

“Our volunteers are excellent role 

models for sideline behaviour,” said 

Canterbury Community Rugby manager 

Fiona Smith. 

“Helping them differentiate themselves 

from the sideline and teams playing 

should serve as a positive reminder that 

we are all there to support the tamariki 

playing our beloved game.” 

It’s a sentiment shared by Ray White’s 

Claire Morris. Said Morris: “We joined 

forces with Canterbury Rugby to get 

behind the Keep it Positive campaign as 

we recognised that this is an area of our 

game that needs our support. 

“By helping provide these bibs to the 

community, we want it to serve as a 

constant reminder of what behaviour we 

want to encourage when on our sidelines.” 

The bibs will be distributed this week in 

Keep it Positive packs. 

Some bibs have also been distributed to 

Ohoka and High School Old Boys’, where 

coaches have heralded their importance.

the kids playing and the spectators to 

distinguish who the referee is.”

spectated upon.” 

Turner said it shows the parents on 

the sideline the referee is just another 

volunteer giving up their time to allow 

their kids to play, while the kids learn to 

respect the referee early on when they can 

identify who it is.

Braedyn’s following in his 

family’s footsteps. 

At 15 years of age, he doesn’t yet have a 

driver’s licence, but with racing in his blood 

and plenty of natural ability, determined 

local teen Braedyn is proving his skill in 

racing ministocks. He started racing at the 

end of 2022, and after competing in only 

his 4th meeting, he took third place at the 

Youth Ministocks Development Group at 

Ashburton. He also received a trophy for 

his 3rd place overall in the New Zealand 

ministock development title. 

The ministock is the smaller non-contact 

version of the superstock, based on 1200cc 

Toyota or Nissan cars. Youth Ministocks 

cater to 12–16-year-olds to learn basic motor 

racing skills. Braedyn’s minimalist steel chassis 

vehicle has little technology. With no speedo 

or fancy gadgets, he only sees oil pressure and 

water temperature. Instead, he focuses on 

driving, and with only 50hp, braking skills are 

crucial when entering and exiting corners to 

maintain the best speed. 

Braedyn says his family sparked his interest, 

and he’s been involved most of his life. 

Grandad raced V8 superstocks, while his aunt 

and uncle raced ministocks. Mum, who grew 

up watching her dad drive and competed at a 

demolition derby at 15, taught Braedyn how 

to drive her car in his great-grandmother’s 

paddock. Braedyn enjoys the sport, “knowing 

it’s something that my relatives have succeeded 

in and enjoyed, and I’m carrying that on”, he 

says. Gaining mechanical knowledge from 

one of his biggest supporters, his grandad, he 

can fix his own car. With a mature outlook, 

Braedyn also advises, “Racing gives me time 

to myself; when you’re in the car, it’s just you 

and the car, and it’s like time out, and nothing 

can interrupt your focus.” 

The sport provides quality family time, 

brings them closer, and teaches them to 

respect each other under pressure. With 

support from his family, towing his vehicle 

to meetings, supporting him financially, 

and having speedway conversations daily, 

Braedyn confirms, “Mum and dad play a 

huge part.” Although his parents have set 

him up, Braedyn works in the holidays, 

contributing towards his costs, saying, “It’s my 

responsibility to keep it going.” 

Braedyn’s next step is to race at Woodford 

Glen and hopefully compete at Cromwell, 

Dunedin, and Invercargill Speedway NZ 

tracks at the end of the year. However, 

before racing at other tracks or entering any 

championships, he must have good meetings 

behind him to get off the mentor program 

before he can travel. Braedyn’s long-term goals 

include stock car racing, winning at Speedway, 

or being part of teams’ racing. He also dreams 

of being picked up as a driver for one of the 

multiple car owners. 

With his continuing success, motivation 

and skill, Braedyn is a young man to watch in

Get your home noticed 

It takes more than good photography to help sell a 

home. You’ll want your home to look attractive and 

appealing for a potential home buyer so check out 

these following tips to get your home ready for real 

estate photography and open homes... 

• First impressions count: Clear away shoes, coats and other items to make your front 

entrance look clean and welcoming. 

• Create natural light: Open all curtains and/or blinds; turn on lights for open home 

days. 

• Keep it clean: A clean house and well cared for section will be far more appealing to 

a buyer; get rid of cobwebs; shine the taps; polish the windows and doorknobs; wash 

and vacuum the floors. 

• Stay fresh: Don’t allow stale cooking and living smells to linger – open windows daily, 

display a vase of sweet smelling flowers, and if need be an occasional spray with a can 

of air freshener. Don’t burn incense as the buyer may wonder what you are trying to 

cover up. 

• De-clutter every room: This is the most important. Clean counters, tables, coffee 

tables and wall units. Clutter really attracts the eye and takes away from the beauty of 

the home. 

• Kitchen/Dining: Remove all unnecessary items; keep the benches clean and clear; 

remove all used tea towels and dishcloths; use flowers to brighten up the dining table. 

• Bathroom: We all have clutter in the bathroom – toothbrushes, creams, toothpaste 

etc. Before the photographer arrives (or potential buyers) put all the clutter into a 

small box, which can easily be stored out of sight. Place clean colour co-ordinated 

towels, neatly folded, onto the towel rail. 

• Bedroom: Use colour coordinated bedcovers and linen; plump up your pillows; 

straighten the valance; put all clothing and person items out of sight. 

• Office: It’s often hard to keep this room perfectly tidy but try to keep it as orderly as 

possible. 

• Keep corners free of clutter: This helps make a room look bigger and therefore more 

spacious. 

• Make your room look bigger: rearrange furniture to create more floor space. 

• Add colour: If your house is neutral in colour, try adding small touches of colour with 

fresh flowers. Another quick color fix is to use cushions but don’t go overboard. Red 

works well against neutral backgrounds as do bright blues and greens. Just remember to 

keep it minimal, pick one colour per room, and it will work. 

• Move toys out of living areas: Keep them in the rumpus room or the children’s 

bedrooms. 

• Boxes or small storage units: Stack them in one area or the spare bedroom. Better 

not to take a picture of the spare bedroom than have boxes or storage boxes in each 

room. Better yet – stack them against one wall and this way the photographer can 

avoid that wall when taking the picture. 

• Check your cords, cables and wires: Tuck and hide those cords away or simply 

unplug them. 

• Keep pets out of sight: Prospective buyers don’t want pets leaping at them or they 

may be even allergic to pet hair, so keep them out of sight or away for photography 

and open home days. 

• Clean up your section and garage: Keep lawns mowed, gardens weeded, hoses and 

wheelbarrow stored out of sight; take excess rubbish to the tip; and arrange your 

garage to look as spacious and orderly as possible. 

Don’t burn incense as the buyer may wonder 

what you are trying to cover up.

Selling a home is a big life decision, both 

financially and emotionally. The journey 

can be a roller coaster, which is why 

finding a licensed real estate agent you feel 

comfortable with is so important.

on the Real Estate Authority’s (REA) 

online public register, which will tell you
