Kids design ways to
make streets safer
A 90 PER CENT Waka Kotahi
funded project is working with
school kids to design easy-touse
and more people friendly
streets surrounding Haeata
Community Campus.
Through the Streets for
People project ‘design jam’, the
kids are taking charge.
Students from St James
School, Chisnallwood
Intermediate and Haeata
Community Campus were
invited to provide their
perspectives on how to make
Aranui streets safer, and follow
along with the process.
St James and Chisnallwood
students took part last week
to design safer streets, with
Haeata students attending a
session this week.
Chisnallwood students said
they talked as a team and
decided what would make the
community safer.
“We came up with ideas
to help our safety and other
people’s safety on the
roads.
“We noticed that footpaths
aren’t wide enough, meaning
you need to walk on the road
if there’s too many people in
a group. Some parents are
worried to let their kids walk to
school.”
St James students say parents
can be impatient and drivers
don’t stick to the speed limit.
“It’s not a racetrack so stop
treating it like one.”
Christchurch Arena
Patrols to
increase
at QEII
after dog
attack
• By Dylan Smits
CITY COUNCIL animal
management staff are set to
patrol QEII Park more often after
a woman was attacked by two
unleashed dogs.
The woman suffered bruises
and a bite to her leg in the
attack, which took place last
Tuesday on the football fields
near the Christchurch School of
Gymnastics.
The victim, who did not want
to speak to media, was treated in
hospital for the bite.
Kendra Wilkie Street found the
injured woman on the field.
“The person attacked was on
the phone to her daughter at the
time. She screamed and hung up
and her daughter thought she’d
been attacked by a person,” Wilkie
Street said.
She said the woman was traumatised
by the incident.
“She was already scared of dogs
and she’s now terrified.”
Wilkie Street said the victim
told her the dog owner did not offer
to help after the attack and left
the scene.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board
member Alex Hewison said city
council staff would “endeavour to
provide additional patrols in the
interim in the QEII area”.
More thefts threaten to put an
end to trust’s garden project
THIEVES CONTINUE to strike
at the Woodland Playground in
Rawhiti Domain.
Rawhiti Domain Charitable
Trust chair Cathy Baker said the
latest blow – the theft of
two substantial trees –
made her consider giving
up on the project.
The idea of the gardens
was to redevelop an area
of the domain which
had become neglected.
She said the trust has
made sure the area and
equipment is accessible
for disabled and neuro-diverse
children after parents mentioned
many other playgrounds did not
Cathy
Baker
cater for children with special
needs. The garden is funded by
charitable donations.
Earlier this year a disability nest
swing was stolen from the park.
Mayor Phil Mauger’s
family charitable foundation
stepped in to replace it. The
swing has been ordered.
Mauger’s construction
company funded the
initial construction of the
playground several years ago.
Baker said the thefts have
been constant since the start
of the project, with plants and
play equipment being stolen
She said the recent theft of two
five-year-old jacaranda trees felt
like the final straw.
“It’s actually heartbreaking
really. When two Sundays ago I
discovered the jacarandas were
missing, I couldn’t breathe. I just
thought this is it, this is the end.
Why bother?
“To steal from children, that’s
the lowest of the low.”
She said they are now trying to
raise funds to set up monitored
security cameras and have set up a
Givealittle page to raise funds.
Baker said some of the items
were spotted up for sale on social
media sites.
She said the information
was passed on to police, but the
items were not able to be retrieved.
Signs wanted to warn dog owners
•From page 1
Hewison plans to put a
dog control motion to the
community board at its next
meeting.
The motion will request city
council staff erect signs at QEII
Park notifying dog owners of
their responsibilities and commit
to regular animal management
patrols to help improve
compliance.
Hewison hopes to do the same
in other areas with dog traffic.
He decided to act after seeing
Wilkie Street’s
post about the
attack on the
New Brighton
community
Facebook page.
“It’s not the
first time this has
Alex
Hewison
happened.”
The city council
dog control bylaw
requires owners to have their
dogs under ‘effective control’ in
public spaces.
The council defines ‘effective
control’ as owners being, “aware
of where the dog is and what
it is doing, ensure the dog
is responsive to commands,
and ensure it is not creating a
nuisance.”
Hewison said, “there needs
to be more communication
between council and dog owners
around what being under
effective control actually is.”
Hopeful his motion will
have full support, Hewison
said board members are,
“quite concerned about dog
management and dog control on
our beaches and our parks and
also our community.”
Community board chair Paul
McMahon said he is likely to
support any dog control proposal
at the next meeting.
Educating and empowering young women
to achieve now and in the future.
Ko Hine-Titama koe nānā i puta ki te whai ao ki te ao mārama
It has been a very busy term at Avonside Girls’
High School. Winter sport started with more
students involved in competitive and social
teams than ever and over this term we have
seen a range of sporting success from Kī O Rahi,
Badminton through to Football, Rugby, Hockey
and Netball. I want to thank our community and
staff for their involvement and support of our
students to play sport. In our last assembly we
celebrated students who had success at Athletics
regionals and those who have made Canterbury
Rugby League and Korfball teams. This term has
seen the buildup to our joint school production
High School Musical – which plays from Weds
June 28th to Sat July 1st. The students and staff
across our school have worked incredibly hard
and we are excited to see the final production.
Our school orchestra has been away on camp,
our Jazz Band competed, and our Clarinet
ensemble performed at the chamber music
competition. This term has seen the comeback
of our school choir at Big Sing, and another
highlight was the AGHS ‘showquest’ team who
competed in the Town Hall – winning an award
for their technical backdrop to the performance.
Our Polyfest group has performed at a variety
of events including welcoming Moana Pasifika
at Christchurch airport. A first for Avonside for
8 years was our entry into Manu Korero with
two speakers at the senior level and one at the
Junior level. The students did so well and have
set a bar for our return in 2024. In addition, our
Kapa Haka Rōpū has grown and developed and their
new waiata are beautiful. Avonside students
have continued to be offered enrichment
opportunities ranging from the philosophy
conference, a chance to present a new website
idea at E whiti, E whiti! or to be part of the
World Scholar’s Cup. Student leaders continue
to develop leading assemblies, meeting with
our Board and Senior Leadership Team and
running events. A highlight has been the
school sports events in which teachers and
students have played house matches against
each other.
Young deaf actor
brings sign to stage
BEING INVOLVED in a theatre
show has its challenges for the
deaf community, but 7-year-old
Phoenix Kay is proving it need
not be a barrier. He is playing
a lead role in Canterbury
Children’s Theatre’s upcoming
show, Stories from the Blue
Chair.
The show brings two wellloved
children’s books to life –
Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper
and Boy by Phil Cummings – as
actor, director and playwright,
Nickie Welbourn tells the stories
from her blue chair and the cast
acts them out.
When Phoenix, who was born
profoundly deaf, heard the Canterbury
Children’s Theatre was
looking for a young person with
some experience of deafness to
play the role of the deaf boy in
Boy, he jumped at the chance.
Phoenix is loving putting his
sign language to use in the play,
and watching the rest of the cast
starting to pick up the language
too.
“My cochlear implants give
me some hearing, but sign
language is my first language
so it is special to be able to play
a role that communicates in
sign,” said Phoenix, who lives
in Richmond.
“It is really cool to see other
members of the cast working
on learning how to use sign
language too, even though they
don’t have to use it in the show.
“Our director, Nickie, has
been learning sign language in
her own time just so that she can
communicate better with me,
which is really nice,” he said.
Phoenix’s mother, Liz, who is
the only member of their family
of five who is not deaf, is going
to provide New Zealand Sign
Language interpretation for the
members of the deaf community
are able to come along and fully
Taking ideas
to the streets
• From page 1
City council manager planning
and delivery transport Jacob
Bradbury said kids are one of the
most vulnerable user-groups in
the road environment, so have
a unique perspective as to how
safety can be improved.
“They’ve been working on
problem identification, learning
about tactics to make streets
safer and more people-friendly,
looked at international examples
of adaptive planning, and are
designing solutions.”
Students brainstormed ideas
such as pedestrian crossings,
wider footpaths, painted cycleways
and incorporating Māori
and Pasifika motifs in their
street-designs.
The groups then let their imagination
come to life, using arts
and crafts materials to draw, cut,
glue and stick their ideas to create
a display.
Following the design jam,
transport engineers will use
the designs to create a proposal
which will be taken out for
broader community consultation.
“It’s been heaps of fun designing
speed bumps, painted
footpaths and road art,” said a St
James School student.
“Be mindful of kids and drive
safely for our safety.”
The project is planned to be ‘in
the ground’ by the start of the
2024 school year.
Staple spuds get a second chance
They’re an absolute
staple, so Love Food
Hate Waste has come
up with another tasty
way to eat them
WE ALL love a spud – roasted,
boiled, mashed, deep fried.
To make potatoes last longer,
store them in a cool, dry and
dark place like a cupboard or
fridge if you have room in the
vegetable drawer – but keep
them away from onions as they
help each other sprout faster.
Easy smashed potatoes
HEARTY: Turn the staple spud into a taste sensation.
PHOTOS: GEL LIM, BABICHE MARTENS
Ingredients
1kg potatoes
Salt
4 Tbsp olive oil, divided
Black pepper, to taste
2 Tbsp chopped fresh green
herbs (optional)
Directions
Scrub the potatoes clean. Cut
off any parts where the potato
has begun to sprout.
Place the potatoes in a pot and
fill with water until just covered.
Add a generous pinch of salt and
cover the pot with a lid.
Bring the mixture to a boil
over medium-high heat and cook
until the potatoes are soft (about
20 minutes).
While they cook, preheat the
oven to 180 deg C fan bake and
drizzle or brush 1 Tbsp of the
olive oil over a large baking tray
or roasting pan.
When the potatoes are cooked,
drain them in a large colander.
Flatten the cooked potatoes using
the back of a fork or a potato
masher and arrange in a single
layer on the lined baking tray.
The thinner they are, the crispier
they’ll be.
Drizzle the remaining 3 Tbsp
of olive oil over the smashed
potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and
pepper.
Bake for 20-25 minutes or
until golden brown.
Serve on its own as a snack or
side with the main meal, and
serve with your favourite sauce if
desired.
Cooking tips
Try other flavour combinations.
Swap the olive oil for butter
and crushed garlic, bake for
10 minutes then sprinkle with
parmesan and bake for another
10 minutes. Add lemon zest
before serving. Or pan fry with
garlic or herb butter.
½ tsp salt
Salad
2 Tbsp olive oil
½ red onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic
1 cup drained cannellini beans
1 cup chopped tomatoes
½ cup chopped Italian parsley
¼ cup green olives, halved
Salt and pepper
1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp brown sugar
100g feta, crumbled
Directions
Preheat the oven to 170 deg C.
Rub kūmara with 1 tablespoon
oil, season, then place them onto
a baking tray.
Cook in the middle of the
oven for 35-40 minutes or until
softened.
While they bake make the
salad. In a large frying pan heat
the remaining oil. Add the onion
and garlic, cooking for 3 or 4
minutes until softened.
Add the beans, tomatoes,
parsley, olives, salt, pepper,
balsamic and sugar, cooking for
5 minutes or until well combined
and warmed through.
To serve, split the hot kūmara
down the middle but not right
through. Spoon over the bean
mixture, then sprinkle with feta
and extra parsley.
Te Aratai College:
Matariki 2023
Celebrating what has always been with us, what is now and what is yet to come.
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori! Wishing us all a
happy Māori New Year!
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula.
Fakaalofa atu. Namaste and Kumusta. Greetings to
everyone at Te Aratai College and our wider Te Aratai
community.
One of the many joys of being in Aotearoa-New Zealand
in 2023 is the continuing movement of our wonderful
country’s development towards being truly Aotearoa-New
Zealand, a bi-cultural nation embracing the diversity of
multi-cultural communities. And not just being in A-NZ but
specifically being part of our Te Aratai College community.
What is Matariki? (Te Wananga o Aotearoa)
The appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in midwinter
marks the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te
Tau. Matariki is the star cluster that is most commonly
known as Pleiades or M45. The arrival of Matariki is a
sign for people to gather, to honour the dead, celebrate
the present and plan for the future. From this comes the
phrase ‘Matariki hunga nui’ - the many people of Matariki.
For early Māori, astronomy was interwoven into all facets
of life. Meticulous observations of the movements of the
stars and planets, the changing position of the sun, the
phases of the moon and the appearance of anomalies
such as comets and meteors were recorded and handed
down from generation to generation as part of Māori oral
tradition. This knowledge was connected to seasonal
activities such as planting and harvesting, the flowering
of plants, the spawning of fish and the natural cycles of
the environment. This astronomical knowledge sits at the
heart of our many regional ecological calendar systems
that guided Māori from season to season.
I use the marker of Matariki to recognise both the
progress brought about through the steadfast endeavours
and struggles of previous generations and the journey
still ahead with all the determination and wisdom that will
be needed for this. However, as a school teacher and
principal, I have immense faith in the present generation
- your children - who inspire me with faith and hope for
the future of our nation. They will shine as, life-long, they
continually build on our school uara, our school values:
Manaakitanga: the process of showing respect,
generosity and care for others
Whanaungatanga: a relationship through shared
experiences and working together which provides
people with a sense of belonging
Rangatiratanga: self-determination and selfmanagement
Tūrangawaewae: where one has the right to stand
What promise our students, your children hold, growing
the seeds of all the good things that they will do over their
coming decades of this 21st century.
Akakoa he iti, he pounamu.
It may be small but it is still pounamu, it is still precious.
Ngā mihi nui – best wishes
Richard Edmundson
Tumuaki-Principal
Aside from the learning that occurs in our different
Learning Areas around our kura, Te Aratai College
also commemorated Matariki with two events on
Thursday. The first was our “Celebration of Learning”
held in Tāhuhu (Y7 and Y8 Learning Area). This was
an opportunity for whānau to visit and ākonga to
share their amazing Matariki installations with their
chosen whetū.
In the evening we hosted our Hui ā-Whānau, which
coincided with Matariki this year. This gave whānau
the opportunity to come together and enjoy games,
goal setting, and culminating with a delicious spread
of BBQ, Parāoa Parai-fry bread, steamed pudding
and ice cream. The main focus of our Hui ā-Whānau
was a chance for whānau and ākonga to reflect on
their learning progress and set goals for the following
year. In a similar way that constellations have guided
us in the past, Matariki is an opportunity for reflection
that can help us plan ahead.
Nissan’s Qashqai a strong performer
THE QASHQAI compact
urban SUV, with its inventive
fuel-saving low emission hybrid
technology, is a breakthrough
model for Nissan in this part of
the world.
In Europe and the UK, they
love the Qashqai. On this side of
the world it is, at best, a steady
seller. The company is expecting
big things from this latest model,
offering a big step up in refinement,
safety and technology
– and unfortunately prices, compared
to the vehicle it replaces.
Affordability could be an
issue with the entry level ST
kicking off at $45,990 – $8000
more than the outgoing model.
There’s no hiding the fact this is
a big increase over the previous
version, even allowing for major
advances on every front.
The new Qashqai offers plenty
of technology, leading edge
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
safety features, and a more
sophisticated multi-link rear
suspension set-up across every
model. There’s more variety in
the powertrain department, with
a new and feisty 1.3-litre turbo
petrol, and the option of Nissan’s
innovative e-POWER hybrid system.
This carries a $7000 price
premium over the turbo petrol
motor.
Petrol, not e-power, dominates
the six-strong model range,
comprising four petrol variants
starting with the $45,995 ST and
stretching all the way to $56,990
for the flagship Ti-L. E power
is limited to the upmarket Ti
and Ti-L priced at $59,990 and
$65,680 respectively. The latter
was supplied for this road test.
Second-generation e-POWER
technology pairs the effortless
acceleration and the refined
performance of an electric motor.
It’s a strong high-energy
performer with 140kw of power
and 330nm of torque to take
command of most driving scenarios.
Thanks to a pure electric
motor, there’s none of the powerdelivery
hesitancy associated
with an internal combustion
engine or traditional hybrid setups.
Instant response provides a
high-torque feel and exhilarating
acceleration, on lower fuel use
and emissions.
The e-POWER system delivers
its torque almost instantly,
enhancing the vehicle’s responsiveness.
A new-generation CVT
(Constant Variable Transmission)
has three drive modes – Eco, Normal
and Sport – and is a huge improvement
on the lethargic CVT
that blunted the performance of
the previous model.
For a compact SUV, this one is
roomier than most with plenty of
passenger and load space.
There’s a panoramic glass roof
and electric sunshade. Cabin
technology features a 10.8-inch
colour head-up display, and a
premium 10-speaker BOSE audio
system. A motion activated
tailgate is great if you’re juggling
an armful of groceries in the
supermarket car park.
Nissan Intelligent Mobility
safety features are impressive. It
includes intelligent cruise control
and forward emergency braking,
plus pedestrian, cyclist and junction
detection capabilities. High
beam assist makes DIY dipping
of your headlights at night for oncoming
traffic a thing of the past.
A lot of hype surrounds
the new Qashqai’s advanced
multi-link rear suspension. The
upside with this suspension
set-up is a stronger connection
between driver, vehicle and road,
and that’s a good thing. Wellcontrolled
body-roll, comfort
and the effective isolation of
road noise and vibrations from
the passenger compartment are
among the best in the compact
urban SUV class.
