Educating and empowering young women
to achieve now and in the future.
Ko Hine-Titama koe nānā i puta ki te whai ao ki te ao mārama
It has been a very busy term at Avonside Girls’
High School. Winter sport started with more
students involved in competitive and social
teams than ever and over this term we have
seen a range of sporting success from Kī O Rahi,
Badminton through to Football, Rugby, Hockey
and Netball. I want to thank our community and
staff for their involvement and support of our
students to play sport. In our last assembly we
celebrated students who had success at Athletics
regionals and those who have made Canterbury
Rugby League and Korfball teams. This term has
seen the buildup to our joint school production
High School Musical – which plays from Weds
June 28th to Sat July 1st. The students and staff
across our school have worked incredibly hard
and we are excited to see the final production.
Our school orchestra has been away on camp,
our Jazz Band competed, and our Clarinet
ensemble performed at the chamber music
competition. This term has seen the comeback
of our school choir at Big Sing, and another
highlight was the AGHS ‘showquest’ team who
competed in the Town Hall – winning an award
for their technical backdrop to the performance.
Our Polyfest group has performed at a variety
of events including welcoming Moana Pasifika
at Christchurch airport. A first for Avonside for
8 years was our entry into Manu Korero with
two speakers at the senior level and one at the
Junior level. The students did so well and have
set a bar for our return in 2024. In addition, our
Kapa Haka Rōpū has grown and developed and their
new waiata are beautiful. Avonside students
have continued to be offered enrichment
opportunities ranging from the philosophy
conference, a chance to present a new website
idea at E whiti, E whiti! or to be part of the
World Scholar’s Cup. Student leaders continue
to develop leading assemblies, meeting with
our Board and Senior Leadership Team and
running events. A highlight has been the
school sports events in which teachers and
students have played house matches against
each other.
Open Afternoon
This term we had our open night for Year
8’s. Approximately 1000 people came
through our school and were engaged
in our different learning areas with
challenges and games as well as met
with students and staff. We are excited to
share our space with you as a community.
